While Derek handed Amy his last beer and tried to convince her to stay, my eyes took a tour of the small crowd, which mainly consisted of men. Wearing pastel-print Oxford shirts (sleeves rolled up to the elbows), khaki shorts, and loafers with no socks, a few of them looked like they just stepped out of an ad. As they threw beanbags into the cornhole board, drank, and carried on animated conversations with fist bumps and head bobs from the loud hip-hop music playing, they exemplified what I’d envisioned a typical fraternity would look like. One large guy with tree trunks for arms smashed a beer can into his forehead and guzzled the foamy fluid that spewed out. Another guy put his fingers to his mouth, kissed them, and yelled, “The taste when it hits your lips.”

Amy and Derek looked at each other.

“Old School,” they said in unison before they smiled, which made no sense to me.

A few girls were there, laughing with each other, hanging onto guys near them, or drinking. Everyone had a cell phone, which most of the women used to take selfies.

I needed to get myself acquainted with my cell phone and especially social media. I was basic when it came to technology. Then again, I was basic when it came to most things. Very lame—unlike the girl who had just come to the party wearing a floral romper, wedge sandals, and large hoop earrings. Everything about her was stunning, from her long, shiny brown hair to her sleek body.

She approached a guy who had his back to me, placing her hand on his arm. He must’ve been six-three. His light-blue T-shirt hugged his muscular back and powerful arms, outlining a body that caught my attention and kept it. I liked his hair and the way his caramel curls danced in the late-day breeze. What did his face look like? As if he heard my question, he turned around and stared right at me.

I’d fallen off my bike once when I was a kid and knocked the wind out of myself. For a few agonizing seconds, I literally couldn’t breathe. As I struggled to breathe now, my lungs reminded me of that moment.

While Amy continued to rib Derek, I caught sight of hot guy’s strong jaw and perfectly proportioned face. The sun reflected off his baby blue eyes that were nothing short of stunning. The corners of his soft, plump lips curved upward into an enticing smile. Enough already. Before I started drooling, I tore my eyes away.

I’d thought about guys—obsessively—but I’d never dreamt up one who looked like him. The boarding school I went to was for girls, but if it had allowed guys, I imagined he and his romper girlfriend would have been king and queen of every prom. Picture perfect. And totally not for me. I was looking for chill, sweet, and cuddly. I didn’t need a runway model or a guy who could audition for the next Marvel movie. No need to get crazy.

I’d never seen Scott so nervous. I’d seen him upset, angry, worried, and shocked—heck, I’d even seen him depressed—but never nervous. Not fun nervous, anyway.

He sucked in a breath and began. “Before I met you, I had no idea what being in love was like. I thought I knew, but I didn’t have a clue. Being with you has taught me so much these past few years. Not only are you the most gorgeous creature I have ever laid eyes on …” He smirked, his eyes dancing with erotic thoughts, something I saw whenever he was “in the mood,” which was pretty much all the time. “And sexy as hell, but you are braver than anyone I’ve ever known.” A shadow fell over his face. “On top of that, and even after all you have been through, you still have the biggest heart. Being with you makes me want to be a better person.” He shook his head and exhaled. “I find myself imagining things that I never thought I’d ever want.”

“Like what?” The words tumbled out of my mouth like a five-year-old with no self-control.
The corners of his luscious lips twitched upward. “Well, for starters … a house … with kids … a dog. The thought of you mothering my children someday makes me believe that dreams can come true.” He looked down for a moment and shook his head again before pinning my gaze with his vibrant blue eyes. “I realize you’re too good for me. And I also know that I don’t deserve you, but fuck if that’s going to stop me from asking you the most important question of my life.” He inched closer, his irises locking me in place, his voice low and imploring. “After we graduate next spring, Sara Browne, will you do me the honor of being my wife?”

My eyes welling with tears, I leaned forward and fell into his big, burly arms, his musky scent welcoming and his lips tapping tiny kisses against my head and cheek. “Of course, I will. I can’t imagine anyone else as my husband or the father of my children. So, yes, yes, yes,” I said, giddy and slightly dizzy from the emotions swirling through my head, my heart, and every cell of my body.

I pried my laptop from my backpack, powered it up, and typed the words, “Carrie Stevens, Commonwealth University.” Within seconds, several article headlines flashed onto the screen, along with some random pictures below them. None of the women in the photos looked anything like Carrie, so I clicked on an Instagram link instead, where I found a treasure trove of images. The first thing I noticed was Carrie’s short, blue hair and thick makeup. This girl wasn’t the all-American-poster girl I had seen at the press conference at the Student Union Building earlier, although there were similarities: her eye color was the same and her facial structure. I scrolled through a picture of Carrie kissing a guy with greasy, long black hair—a wild party exploding in the background. I found another pic of Carrie holding a shot glass in the air, her eyes bloodshot. The last one I saw included Carrie smoking a tightly wrapped cigarette. I peered closer, maybe not a cigarette. At that moment, Amy entered through the door. When I didn’t look up, she stopped short. “What are you doing?” She leaned over my shoulder. “That’s Carrie Stevens.” I glanced over at Amy. “She looks much different, doesn’t she?” Amy furrowed her brow. “Who? Oh, you mean the girl who went missing? The one from the press conference?” I nodded. “Yeah, weird, huh?” I pointed haphazardly over the screen. “It looks like she’s changed a lot since her high school graduation photo was taken. She could be your sister, Amy.” “Why, because she dyed her hair and put on some makeup?” Amy shrugged, before crossing my room and plopping down on my bed. “She looks better if you ask me.” “Well … yeah. It’s not a bad look. It’s just different. Do you think they questioned Henry—you know when Carrie went missing?” I turned to look at her. Amy squinted at me. “Who?” Oh my God, Amy, how could you forget HIM? I raised both hands in the air, exasperated. “You know. Henry—the man you were just screaming at.” Amy’s face opened, showing clarity. She nodded. “Oooooh, you mean, Norman Bates. Yes, I’m sure they did. Why?”

An ear-piercing scream … Someone grabbed my shoulders and shook me, lifting my torso off the mattress. What is happening? A voice rang out. “Sara. Wake up!” I startled as light filtered in through my eyelids. I couldn’t fathom where I was or when. Then the nightmare resurfaced. Oh, God. Is it him? My mind was locked in another world, one where l was running down hallways, trying to hide, a shadowy figure always close. Too close. Danger lurked around every corner … Scott’s voice broke through the haze. His hands were warm and embracing, his tone frantic. “Wake up, babe.” I forced my eyes open and focused on the face in front of me. My heart raced, sending perspiration to my chest, my body encased in an uncomfortable sweat. I took a few long blinks, allowing Scott’s distressed blue eyes to come into full view. I tried to swallow, but my mouth was beyond parched. That dream—that horrible dream still plagued my mind. Even though I was awake, the trauma still felt very real. Painted bloodshot red, Scott’s eyes were wide with worry, his brow creased. “You were having a bad dream. Are you okay?” He smoothed my hair back, his breath coming in short pants, like one does when startled awake. “Was I talking in my sleep?” Then I remembered the scream. Did that come from me? My gaze traveled around Scott’s fraternity room, orienting myself with the soccer player and sports car posters that decorated his walls, his bookcase full of loose papers and notebooks, his dresser, and his futon. Everything was in its place. Even his PlayStation, which sat atop a beat-up old coffee table, brought me an unexpected feeling of comfort. I wasn’t in an old decrepit dream house full of cobwebs, mold, and terrifying darkness, and he wasn’t coming after me. It wasn’t real. For a moment, I felt like Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz—Scott was my Auntie Em—my beacon back to safety. “You were screaming.” Scott slid a hand down his unshaven face. So it was me. My scratchy throat confirmed it. “It was just a dream. You’re okay, now.” A lingering doubt played at the edges of his words. He pulled me into his arms and held me there. The stubble growing on his cheeks bristled against my neck as I inhaled a hint of musk that had collected in his soft golden curls from his late-night shower. God, I had missed that smell just as much as I had missed those strong arms that always made me feel so safe. I glanced at the clock, realizing we had only been asleep for a few hours. The dark circles shadowing Scott’s eyes were a testament to that. We had spent most of the night wrapped in each other’s arms, fully clothed and grateful. Whenever I dozed off, I’d startle myself awake, fearing he was gone … again.

The following day, I headed to the library to work on a paper I had to write for my Western Civilization class. I needed to use their printer. I passed by Derek and Rick on my way in. They were really chumming it up lately. Rick acted especially happy to see me, but I wasn’t sure why. “Where are you off to?” Rick asked. “Oh, hi, Rick. Hey, Derek. Library. I’ve gotta print some stuff off.” Rick reached into the back pocket of his pastel shorts. “I’ve got a huge credit on my student card if you want to use it.” He opened his wallet. I put my hand up. “No. That’s okay. I just funded mine … but thanks anyway.” He put his wallet back. “I also have a decent printer in my room if you ever need to use it.” I took a step closer to the library door. “Okay, thanks.” “I’ll text you and Amy later,” Derek said as the two of them wandered off. The library housed a small café where you could get Starbucks if you wanted. Rachael was standing in line when I passed by. I wasn’t in the mood for one of her snide comments, so I walked fast so she wouldn’t see me. I found a study area, sat, and opened my laptop. There was another note waiting for me from Scott: “Thinking about you.” I sent him a quick text. “I got your note. Thinking about you, too, handsome.” If Amy could have a nickname for everyone, so could I. My mother had often referred to my father as handsome, so it seemed fitting. An hour of writing, and I hadn’t made much progress, although I had at least put together an outline for my paper, which was due on Monday. I chose the topic: Influence of Classical Greece on the Foundation of Western Civilization. Mind blown. History had never been my subject, but it was part of my core curriculum. Scott had bragged about Jason being a history genius, and I wondered if he had any tips that could help me remember this stuff. I took a bottle of water out of my backpack to quench my thirst while thinking about it. I screwed the top back on my water bottle and sent my file to the printer. As I crossed the library, I thought about Rick’s offer. Did he honestly think I would go to his room to print a document? I swiped my student card and then went through the process of printing my stuff. When I returned to my study area, my laptop was off, the screen blank. It wouldn’t power up, either. Battery? No, I had just charged it right before I left my dorm. My water bottle was three-quarters full when I had left it a few minutes ago. Now it was empty. A few droplets beaded on the keyboard. I picked up the now empty bottle, which was still upright, not tipped over, its cap secured in place. Had someone opened my bottle, tipped it over, and put the cap back on? What the? I looked around. Nothing about this situation made sense. That night, I walked to my car to do a grocery run. When I got there, my windows were marred with pink marker, the words “Watch your back,” in all caps. The windshield, the side windows, and the back. They were all covered. Considering my hypersensitivity to dangerous situations, it was like throwing gasoline on the tinderbox that was my PTSD.

My cautious side took over, pulling my emotional reins back. “I like you, too, but can we take this slow and see where it goes?” This was all happening so fast. I had a hard time believing it was real. Scott backed up, his eyes going distant, then he offered a faint nod. I was sure a guy like him wasn’t used to hearing words like “Can we take this slow?” from women. Maybe that was a deal-breaker for him. He straightened himself up as if he was rebooting. “We can definitely take things slow. I wouldn’t want it any other way.” His dimple appeared right before the flash of his winning smile. “I know your name is Sara. Is there a last name to go with it?” Finally, an easy topic. “Browne. And you?” “Williams.” I rolled this surreal moment around in my mind. Was it really happening? I was standing on a mountain with a guy who was kind, considerate, and hotter than anyone I had ever seen. Best of all, he was into me, and I was into him.
