“Fuck it,” I muttered, my voice barely audible, raised the covers, and in I went.

At first, I mirrored her posture, lying on my side without touching her. My pulse quickened, my mind coming up blank.

In, out. In, out.

The familiar repetition dissipated my anxiety. The longer I repeated it, the slower my heart beat. Soon, my breaths synchronized with those of Justine, our shoulders rising and falling in tandem. Only then did I move, draping my arm across her pink nightgown, sheathing her waist, scooting closer to her.

Hate would make you forget a lot of things. It’d wipe out lazy afternoons of lying on the beach together. It’d box and store away secret moments you glanced at the girl you loved while she gave imaginary classes to her dolls, while you were supposed to be reading finance articles. It’d bury the time she caught you doing it and smiled at you as if she loved you too.

It could try to drown, by a small portion, the memory of how your love felt beneath your fingertips when you hugged her through days and nights, through tears and laughter in the intimate position you’d shared with no one ever since. It could try, but it would fail.

Because once reality kicked in, it didn’t stand a fucking chance.

“How are you, Els?”

That was a loaded question. Between the exposure he’d subjected me to, and the sexual tension that revolved being around him, I couldn’t say what or how I was. “I’m…okay?”

His lips twitched, a glimmer of mischief glinting in his eyes. “You haven’t fainted. Or fallen asleep.”

“Nope.”

My heart hadn’t slowed one bit. It galloped, springing forward like a racehorse; it threatened to break out of its cage, pushing against my ribs. And it was desperate to reach Kyle.

From where his lips met my knuckles, I pulled his hand lower. I removed my fingers from his, wrapped them around his wrist and pressed his palm beneath my throat, in the center of my collarbone.

He swallowed. “That’s fast.”

We were practically nose to nose, the invisible bridge between our eyes growing ever shorter. Not leaving my sight, Kyle mirrored my actions, lowering his sweatshirt so I could feel his pulse.

Combustion.

“Reading for you has been the single most exciting thing I’ve done in a long while, Miss Jenkins.” He flicked his tongue out, swiping it over his lower lip. “I hope I did you proud.”

“You did much more than that.” A tear stained my cheek at the memory of him sharing my work. His deep voice relaying the story I wrote, the sincerity in it. It felt like a box of chocolates detonated inside my soul. “You made me not hate it.”

“What an idiot I was.” She huffed a watery breath. “To believe you were getting the hint, getting why I had to do what I did. To believe a real happy ending could happen to me.” Her mouth pinched into a thin line before she mumbled, mostly to herself, “I was so naïve.”

I stared at her dumbly as she waited for my reply.

“Noah, I’ve been trying to talk myself out of misjudging you, of not giving you a fair chance.” She twisted her fingers.

“You made it feel so real, this affection for me.”

My fists clenched, the fingers digging into my flesh. With as much restraint as I could muster against these hurtful

accusations, I answered, “Alda, I think you should take a moment and listen to me before you say something both of us will regret.”

“Regret what? Saying to your face how you left me when I needed you?”

Evidently, grudges were indiscriminate and they dug roots down in both our souls.

She hid her face with her palms then raked her fingers through her hair, slowly moving her gaze from the covers to me.

“Why are we doing this, Noah? Huh? What am I to you? Am I a toy? A plaything to use and then write stories about?”

If words could kill, I’d be bleeding to death on the floor right then and there.

#TBOLRD-9 Something in what I said triggered him and he pulled back. “No, I’m sorry.” Zach gripped my hips, lifted me as if I weighed nothing and placed me gently on the bed. “I can’t.” He sat up and kissed my cheek, so soft it almost hurt. “I’d feel like a tool for doing it. We’ll have other days.” I crossed my arms over my body, suddenly very self-conscious. “Hey.” Zach cupped my cheeks, encouraging me not to hide but look at him. His lips curved up in a kind smile. “You felt me just now, so you know how bad I have it for you. But if we fucked, you’d always have that doubt. You’d always question my honesty, and I won’t ever make you feel used like this.” His earnestness made my heart expand and strain against my chest. Zach acted like a real friend and it meant something to me. It meant a lot. Zach’s warm words and reassurance allowed me to relax. I became limp, sagging into the mattress as he covered my naked body, pulling the blanket up to my shoulders. “What’s funny?” he asked when I chuckled. “You, protecting my modesty.” His smile widened, and he kissed my cheek ever so softly that I barely registered it. A second later, he was next to the door. “You’re not staying?” “If I did, I can’t promise you there’d be no sleeping. I’ll see you, Tulip.” As soon as I heard him closing the door behind him and turning the lock, my eyelids draped over my eyes like a silk veil, smooth and soft. It didn’t take long for the peaceful sleep to arrive, when I was surrounded by the comfort of having another person in the world who cared about me.
