Exclusive Excerpt:

Philippa fastened the last black button on her crisp new lime-green kitchen jacket. So much for a simple staff presentation. Not only was she expected to introduce Dominic, per Zurie’s request, she now had to stay for his entire cooking demonstration.

She snatched the empty packaging for the jacket from her desk. Underneath it was the bio for Dominic that his publicist had dropped off not too long ago.

Chef extraordinaire. Bestselling author. Star of an acclaimed cooking show. A pampered chef focused on his public persona. Was that who she was dealing with for the next few weeks?

As she stepped out of her office into the kitchen, a few of the staff walked by.

“I don’t care what he makes,” one of the servers said. “I just want to hear his voice as he describes it. He could make mud pies sound irresistible.”

Philippa kept her face neutral as she followed behind them, but inside, she gave an inner eye roll”

“I’m just glad he’s not like some celebrities,” a kitchen helper responded. “The way he stood up for us about where we could sit in the dining room proves he actually cares about people who work in the kitchen.”

Stood up for them? Was there not enough seats?

Philippa flagged down Quinn. “I heard something about there being a problem with seating for the demo. Is everything okay?”

“Oh, yes, it’s fine now. There was just some mix-up with the publicity person. She said all the Pasture Lane employees would have to sit in the back and let everyone else sit up front. But Dominic set her straight.”

As Quinn rushed into the dining room, Philippa hung back and peered through the window near the top of the right-hand door.

“How does it look out there?”

The resonant tone of Dominic’s voice coming from behind ignited a frisson of awareness that moved along Philippa’s spine and tingled across her nape.

“It’s a full house.” She calmed an unsteady breath and faced him.

Up close, he looked even better than he had in the lobby. But hints of fatigue were in his eyes. She hadn’t taken his present work schedule into consideration when she’d asked him to do the cooking demo.

“Thank you…”

“I’m sorry…”

They both spoke at the same time.

Dominic gestured for her to speak first.

“I appreciate you adding this to your full schedule. And for making sure my staff have front-row seats. If they weren’t already fans of chef extraordinaire, Dominic Crawford, they are now.”

“Chef extraordinaire?”

She’d meant to tease him, but from his slight wince, her attempt had fallen flat. “That didn’t come out right. I didn’t mean it in a bad way. I was just referring to the intro Amber gave me.”

“I should have guessed.” He smiled, but as he glanced at the paper in her hand a shadow of discomfort moved across his face. “You don’t have to say all that. Owner of Frost & Flame is fine.”

“And have Amber come after me? No, thank you.”

Dominic gave a low chuckle. “Yeah, she’s insistent.” He took a step forward and the subtle notes of his cologne wafted into the space between them. “About the changes with the demo. I—”

The door opened behind Philippa, pitching her forward, and her hand with the paper landed on his solid chest.

Dominic took hold of her arms. “You okay?”

As she looked into his eyes, familiarity washed over her. The automatic desire to lean into him almost overwhelmed her.

Amber peeked past the door. “Chef Gayle, good. You’re right where you’re supposed to be.”

Grey backed her up against the rack on the left wall and gripped the edge of the shelf near the sides of her head. He leaned in, and his hard chest brushed against the sensitive tips of her breasts.

He pressed a kiss near her ear. “I’m not playing with you.”

Desire shallowed her breathing as she reached for the tucked edges of the towel. “No games here.”

The doorbell rang, and the front door lock disengaged.

Her hands froze, and Grey’s head snapped up.

The security system chimed with the opening of the door.

“Cori,” her mother called out. “It’s me.”

Panic blazed through Cori. In a matter of seconds, her mom would walk into the kitchen and see… She glanced down at Grey’s erection jutting out from the towel. Shit! Pushing past him, she whispered, “Stay here.”

“Wait—”

Cori rushed out, just closing the door behind her when Adina Ross came down the hallway.

“There you are.” Her petite mom, neat and comfortable looking in beige capri pants, a loose navy shirt, and matching flats, stuffed her keys in a navy shoulder bag as she walked into the kitchen. “Sorry for barging in and not waiting for you to answer the door, but I made the mistake of asking your favorite neighbor how she was doing.” Her mom’s light brown face was free of makeup. Soft creases formed at the corners of her eyes as she chuckled and gave Cori a brief hug. “That woman talked for ten minutes straight about her root canal. She was about to go into the neighborhood drama report before I finally got away from her.”

“But it’s Saturday. Don’t you have a standing hair appointment this afternoon?”

Her mom smoothed a hand over her ebony hair that was pulled back into a ponytail. “I’m on my way there, but I needed to talk to you first. What were you so busy doing that you couldn’t call me back?”

“I ran into a friend I hadn’t seen in a while. We were out late catching up.”

“And this morning?”

Images from earlier flashed in Cori’s mind of her and Grey on the couch…and of him standing in her pantry closet wearing nothing but a towel and a hard-on. Well, he probably didn’t have the hard-on anymore.

Chloe didn’t realize her hand was raised in his or that his other hand rested on her back until a dancing couple bumped her closer to him.

Chloe held on to his arm for balance. He wanted to dance with her. “But I don’t know this one.”

Tristan leaned in near her ear. “I’ll teach you. Trust me. It’s not complicated.”

Not complicated? Every cell of her being was awakened by his proximity and his familiar scent warming on his skin. She’d probably make a fool of herself. “Okay. I’ll try.”

He moved back a little. “It’s just a simple two-step. When I step forward with my left foot, you step back with your right. Then it’s quick-quick, slow-slow. Quick-quick, slow-slow. I’ll guide you through it.”

Right away, she jumbled the steps.

Tristan chuckled. “Wait. Let’s do that again. Start with your other right.”

Meaning not her left foot. Instead of cringing with embarrassment the humor in his expression made her laugh, and she tried again. A few steps later, she followed his lead finally easing into the smooth easy movements without stepping on the toes of his boots.

He caught her off guard as he released her and twirled her around. When he took her back into his arms, her leg slid between his, aligning their hips and melding her to his chest…just like during their kiss in the pasture.

Nearby, Adam and Bethany danced just as close. When Adam spun her around, in one deft move, Bethany snagged his brown cowboy hat from his head and put it on hers. Bethany wound her arms around Adam’s neck, and he rested his forehead to hers as his hands slid to her waist.

A hint of envy filled Chloe as she longed for that kind of intimacy with Tristan, but unlike Bethany and Adam, that kind of closeness would put all eyes on them, making people wonder about them, and raise questions that she didn’t even have the answer to about her relationship status with Tristan.

Needing to change focus, Chloe looked to his cowboy hat. His other hat was in the front seat of her rental, parked just off the road near the pasture gate along with the cars of other Spring Fling attendees. She’d planned to hand it over to him after the party.

“Your Stetson reminds me, I need to give you your ball cap back.”

“Or you could trade up.”

“What exactly does ‘trade up’ mean?” The huskiness in his voice made her look directly into his eyes.

Tristan’s slow lean in near her cheek brought her closer to him, and she drew in an unsteady breath as his lightly whiskered cheek grazed hers. “You tell me.”
