Heat races in my veins, I can feel my cool slipping. I swallow down the pain and dryness in my throat. She’s right. And maybe this was something I knew all along, making it easier to put off this conversation. I have so many things I want to say to her. So many promises I want to make, but I can’t get the words out. For the first time in my life, I can’t talk my way out of something. I can’t come up with the words or the actions to make everything okay. Matt’s house comes into view, and before I can even park in the driveway, she’s up and out of the seat. Oaklynn runs to the door, not looking back. I glance down at her seat, feeling my heart torn in pieces, because she left the roses too.
