Heat races in my veins, I can feel my cool slipping. I swallow down the pain and dryness in my throat. She’s right. And maybe this was something I knew all along, making it easier to put off this conversation. I just never imagined I would fall as hard as I did. “What do we do?” Her breath shudders in her chest. “We part on good terms. I want good things for you, Kai. I want you to be safe. I believe in the goodness of Rogue, and I know it’s a noble cause. I just don’t know if it’s part of my future too.” I suck in a breath, and look out at the water. Pain prickles behind my eyes, making them burn. It’s really going to end this way. We both stand in silence. Both of us are here, but our hearts are miles apart. “I’ll take you back.” Oaklynn follows me to the car. We don’t speak, but she does let me hold her hand. I have so many things I want to say to her. So many promises I want to make, but I can’t get the words out. For the first time in my life, I can’t talk my way out of something. I can’t come up with the words or the actions to make everything okay. Matt’s house comes into view, and before I can even park in the driveway, she’s up and out of the seat. Oaklynn runs to the door, not looking back. I glance down at her seat, feeling my heart torn in pieces, because she left the roses too.

Well, that escalated quickly. I really hope he’s not a stalker or has some sick fascination with this girl. I don’t want to be responsible for placing a girl in the same position I found myself in a few weeks ago. I do not know her and he seems adamant about me only checking in on her. “Deal,” I mutter, before I can convince myself to back out. My eyes slam closed, and my head bows until my chin hits my chest. I’ve either just made the biggest mistake of my life, or one that will keep me safe, out of harm’s way. Something inside me already feels lighter. There’s a crackle of energy bouncing in my rib cage that wasn’t there before. Let’s hope that means I made the right decision for the girl and for me.

I’m normally someone who likes to read books in order; this series flies in the face of that rule. Reading books 1 & 2 first before this book actually set up this book so well. You know the ending but you don’t know the journey they all take.

I will be honest, I wasn’t sure I would like the Midwest Boys series when I signed up for it. But I was willing to give it a shot. And I’m so glad I did. These stories have converted me to loving the Midwest Boys! And all of their stories!

We’ve met Jason and Kelly in books 1 & 2 but now we get to read their story. And peeks of Erika and Matt’s story. Which after meeting Jason and Kelly, I’m glad we got to read their story and how they got there.

I’m sure hoping that Matt and Erika’s story is next!

I’m startled awake some time later when I hear a bump against the wall across from me. Laying in the dark, I wait and it happens over and over again. Curious, I get up and tiptoe out my door and over to the spare room. “No,” I can hear being said over and over, the voice deep and afraid. I peek my head in and, sure enough, he’s tangled in his bed sheet, his leg hitting the wall while it looks like he’s fighting someone. Carefully, I slowly walk over to the bed and lay my hand on his arm. “You’re safe,” I repeat over and over, until his frown eases and the wrinkle on his forehead is gone. I’m about to back away when his eyes fly open, pinning me with a stare. “Sorry,” I blurt out. “I’m Kelly. I heard you and just wanted to check to see if you’re okay.” His throat bobs a couple times before he nods his head, his eyes flicking to the clock that reads quarter after two. His hands come up and rub down his face. For the first time I notice he’s shirtless and wearing basketball shorts. His face is longer and his jaw is square, sharp, with a classical aristocratic look. His hair is light and short, cropped close on the sides and longer on top. It’s fashionable and not at all my type. “I’m Calvin,” he says, testing out his new name. “Nice to meet you,” I respond and smile. “I’ll talk to you more in the morning, okay?” He nods again in response. Our eyes hold and I faintly see the remaining ghosts that are haunting him. The orbs clear when he blinks again. “Night.”
