The following day, I headed to the library to work on a paper I had to write for my Western Civilization class. I needed to use their printer. I passed by Derek and Rick on my way in. They were really chumming it up lately. Rick acted especially happy to see me, but I wasn’t sure why. “Where are you off to?” Rick asked. “Oh, hi, Rick. Hey, Derek. Library. I’ve gotta print some stuff off.” Rick reached into the back pocket of his pastel shorts. “I’ve got a huge credit on my student card if you want to use it.” He opened his wallet. I put my hand up. “No. That’s okay. I just funded mine … but thanks anyway.” He put his wallet back. “I also have a decent printer in my room if you ever need to use it.” I took a step closer to the library door. “Okay, thanks.” “I’ll text you and Amy later,” Derek said as the two of them wandered off. The library housed a small café where you could get Starbucks if you wanted. Rachael was standing in line when I passed by. I wasn’t in the mood for one of her snide comments, so I walked fast so she wouldn’t see me. I found a study area, sat, and opened my laptop. There was another note waiting for me from Scott: “Thinking about you.” I sent him a quick text. “I got your note. Thinking about you, too, handsome.” If Amy could have a nickname for everyone, so could I. My mother had often referred to my father as handsome, so it seemed fitting. An hour of writing, and I hadn’t made much progress, although I had at least put together an outline for my paper, which was due on Monday. I chose the topic: Influence of Classical Greece on the Foundation of Western Civilization. Mind blown. History had never been my subject, but it was part of my core curriculum. Scott had bragged about Jason being a history genius, and I wondered if he had any tips that could help me remember this stuff. I took a bottle of water out of my backpack to quench my thirst while thinking about it. I screwed the top back on my water bottle and sent my file to the printer. As I crossed the library, I thought about Rick’s offer. Did he honestly think I would go to his room to print a document? I swiped my student card and then went through the process of printing my stuff. When I returned to my study area, my laptop was off, the screen blank. It wouldn’t power up, either. Battery? No, I had just charged it right before I left my dorm. My water bottle was three-quarters full when I had left it a few minutes ago. Now it was empty. A few droplets beaded on the keyboard. I picked up the now empty bottle, which was still upright, not tipped over, its cap secured in place. Had someone opened my bottle, tipped it over, and put the cap back on? What the? I looked around. Nothing about this situation made sense. That night, I walked to my car to do a grocery run. When I got there, my windows were marred with pink marker, the words “Watch your back,” in all caps. The windshield, the side windows, and the back. They were all covered. Considering my hypersensitivity to dangerous situations, it was like throwing gasoline on the tinderbox that was my PTSD.

Exclusive Excerpt:

Hey, welcome to Wild Flora — let me know if you need anything.” I put my hand up to shield the glare and see a man standing in front of me. The large shadow has turned into solid muscle and I lose my train of thought for a moment. I inhale quickly. He is quite literally the most beautiful human I’ve ever seen. His eyes are an emerald green and they’re staring at me. He’s staring at me.

Oh shit.

I try and gather words but the most I can do is lick my lips as he pushes dark waves of hair out of his eyes and looks at me and says, “hi.”

Jesus Christ.

He grins then, a dimple appearing in his left cheek. I scratch at my throat, unable to process what’s happening internally: it feels like lightning. What was that song about lightning in a bottle? It feels like that pinging around my insides. I am mortified but can’t stop staring so I don’t know what to do except get him out of the store and never see him again.

“Oh. Um. Hi. Can I get you something? Or did you already order?”

He walks up to the counter and the lightning turns into fireworks in my veins. I try and grab a few breaths but they come out as whisps.

I’m definitely going to need a drag from my inhaler after this.

He raises an eyebrow and I look away.

Sweet baby Jesus this man is a walking pregnancy threat.

Nope. No. Immediately no.

I take my index finger and push the nail into the fleshy side of my thumb, bringing me back to reality.

We’re not doing this, Nova.

He opens his mouth to answer, but we’re interrupted.

“Hey, I’m going to grab some coff—” Gabi walks out from the back and takes one look at my face and freezes. She wrinkles her brow, trying to decipher what’s happening, when the man turns around and smiles at her. Her eyes widen and she returns the smile, the change in expression happening so quickly he doesn’t even notice. When he turns back to me she mouths WOW before motioning drinking and pointing to the door.

“I’m grabbing coffee. Do you want anything?”

I glance again at our visitor and hold up my hand. “Just a minute. Sorry.” He shrugs and leans against the counter, crossing his arms. I see his biceps flex under his grey hoodie and I dart my eyes away again, completely flustered. My toes curl in my Doc Martens and Gabi’s lips curl just a hair as she sees me flustered over this customer.

It’s been a while since I’ve had a visceral reaction to someone.

I straighten my shoulders, remembering again what happened the last time I felt this way — five years of narcissistic abuse and all I got out of it are the therapy appointments I still have booked in my Calendar. Just remembering this is enough to have me relaxing a little.

But wait. Did I feel this with Corey?

I don’t know if I did.

“Um, yeah. My usual,” I call to Gabi and she nods in understanding as she wraps a scarf around her neck.

“Triple shot iced mocha with coconut milk coming right up — be back soon.”

The bell signals her exit and I drum my fingernails on the counter.

“Sorry about that — were you picking something up or just looking around?”

He looks back at me and smiles. “I ordered something yesterday.” He motions to the door Gabi just walked through. “Pretty sure I spoke with her about what I wanted. It’s an order for Jax?”

I swallow, keeping my face even.

Of course. Despite my resolve to not entertain the attraction, my heart sinks. Of course he’s picking up the apology bouquet.

He has fuck boi written all over his pristine white sneakers.

I refuse to react but I can feel the way my body immediately cools toward him and I know he has to see the shift as well. I clear my throat and try and summon some southern niceties back into my tone.

“Jax you said?” I turn and open the cooler, pulling the vase out and placing it in between us, reading the order card Gabi wrote yesterday. “A blended rose bouquet — not just roses, can be a bit different and not necessarily romantic…” I pause for a moment with the last phrase, confusion crossing my face. I blink it away and push the vase forward. “Colors requested were pale pink and red? My notes say you already paid so you’re good to go.”

“Wow. This is perfect,” he says, admiring the arrangement. “She nailed it.” He looks back at me and smiles again, this time the corner of his eyes wrinkling in amusement. “Will you tell her thank you when she gets back?”

My lips curl under for a fraction of a second and I shrug. “Sure.”

He turns to leave then, balancing the vase in his arm as he pushes the door open with his shoulder and looks at me again with a wave.

“Have a good one.”

I watch as his retreating figure pulls his keys out of his pocket and opens the passenger door of an Audi. I drop my head in my hands and groan.

I am so….so very single.

About the Author:

Elora Ramirez has always been a word girl.

It started when she was four, when she taught herself how to read and write as a way to entertain herself while her grandmother kicked and danced in aerobics class. She cut her teeth on books from Dr. Seuss and writing anywhere she could find the space — including her Fischer Price kitchenette, the pages of picture books, and Highlights Magazines.

She’s matured a bit since then, now choosing to write in the margins of her books and on the mirrors of her bathroom ideas and thoughts surrounding story and what makes us human. By day she leads a team at a tech company, waking up before the sun rises to get in her love for words before stepping into her role of helping others see the plot line of their own story under development.

Intuition and beauty get her through the day, as well as her chef-husband and their little lion son. Curious Obsession is her fourth novel.

One Year Ago

The painting was so ludicrous that I chewed the inside of my top lip—hard enough that the next sip of gin was going to sting. But if I didn’t control my mouth, it was going to shape itself into a judgy, bitchy smirk at our poor hostess’s expense.
The painting was of a woman’s back, butt, and legs as she lounged on a blue velvet settee. It didn’t reveal any part of the subject’s face. But it was clearly supposed to be Selma. Selma was a big fan of strapless gowns and asymmetrical shirts. The triangle of small moles on her left shoulder blade was as familiar to me as the shade of dark pink lipstick always highlighting her formidable lips. The woman in the painting sported an identical isosceles mole triangle, as well as a spill of hair in a variety of blonde shades ranging from honey to platinum. I’d once heard Selma boast that it took three colorists four hours every six weeks to keep her signature blend of hair colors perfect.
I cocked my head as my eyes traveled to the problematic part of the woman in the painting. She may have had Selma’s geometric moles and she may have had Selma’s intricate hair. The ass, however…
“Do you think this painting is a prophecy?” A question spoken so low that only I could hear.
I snapped my gaze away from the painting’s exquisite ass and looked up in surprise at the man suddenly next to me. “Huh?” I didn’t recognize him, but that wasn’t surprising as I’d only been back in the Bay Area for a couple of weeks.
I would have remembered him if I’d seen him before. He was one of those unmistakable people. (Us generic-looking people often resent his kind.) He was probably mid-thirties, over six feet tall with thick, golden hair, grown at a shaggy length that would look stupid on most men, but it decidedly did not look stupid on him. He was tan like he’d just come back from a beach vacation, and he had deep smile lines around his eyes and mouth. They were crinkled now around his bright blue eyes.
My own were crinkled too, not with mirth but with confusion. “A prophecy?”
“A prophecy is a prediction, a forecast,” he began, eyes twinkling. Was he teasing or mansplaining?
“Yes, I know what a prophecy is,” I said. Snapped, really. I’d been around at enough of these nights to be familiar with the typical male attendees. The men near my age usually fell into particular categories: boastful start-up tech founders, schmoozy sales and marketing execs, and lots of “I know everything” lawyers. Most of them treated these nights like networking events or auditions for a TED Talk instead of parties.
I’d been so dreading my possible seating partners for dinner that I’d snuck into the dining room to see the place cards when we first arrived. Thank God I was seated next to my father.
“Excellent.” He waved his negroni toward the painted naked lady. “So I was just wondering if this painting is a heads-up from our hostess about certain impending changes.”
Oh. The mischief in his voice made my lips twitch. He’d been teasing, then. This wasn’t some stuffy ibanker or insufferable crypto bro. Inexplicably, this was someone fun.
I raised an eyebrow at him and spoke softly. “Meaning, Selma wants everyone to know that she’ll soon be getting butt implants?”
He grinned down at me, almost with relief, as though he’d been hoping to find someone snarky. “Perhaps the buttock augmentation is already complete.” He pointed directly below the painting. I hadn’t noticed the blue velvet settee against the wall, an identical twin to the one in the portrait. “Perhaps she’ll settle herself right there later and let us compare art to reality.”
It was just too perfect of an image: ludicrous, of course, but if Selma had one too many negronis, you could almost see it happening. Oh God, please let that happen. I’d suffer through twelve boring dinner parties if Selma would cross that bizarre, hilarious line.
A significant snort-laugh erupted from my nose before I could stop it. “Sorry,” I gasped.
His answering laugh was deep and delighted. “Don’t be. I love it when people snort when they laugh. It’s literally one of my favorite things in life.” Well, I loved when people got tears in their eyes at the smallest of chuckles, and right now, there was a sheen of moisture covering his.
“I don’t know you, and I usually know everyone at these things,” he said, like an invitation.
Sigh. Now I would introduce myself, and he would get that look in his eye when he realized who my father was.
I opened my mouth, but to my surprise, he cut me off. “So I asked four different people here who you were and what you’re like.”
My mouth closed abruptly. Why would he do that? Also, I could guess what the four people had said, and they were all sure to be wrong. I swallowed a sigh. “Oh?” This encounter had started so fun. Now I wondered how soon I could excuse myself.
He took a slow sip. “You’re Sven Saturn’s daughter.” Yep. For the entirety of my life, that would be the first—and sometimes the only—thing most people cared about. “You’re intensely smart and have some sort of big, important job.” OK, he totally embellished that point. I’m sure whoever he talked to actually just used the word workaholic. To be fair, that was also correct. Work was my place, my cathedral, my sports arena. Work was home.
He cocked his head. “And you’re very quiet and sweet.”
Of course that’s what they said. Quiet was correct; sweet was not. But when you’re a little shy with a heart-shaped face and round eyes, people always make the leap to sweet. In actuality, Resting Bitch Face would have suited my internal personality much better. I’m sure people were trying to be kind, but why is sweet a good thing to call someone? In our hyperaggressive, competitive world, who the hell wanted to be sweet?
To the man beside me, I ducked my chin. “Well, that was nice of them.” Where was the tray of negronis? Maybe I’d survive this night with a nice little buzz. Or maybe I could put on headphones and go into another room on the pretense of taking a call. I had Netflix on my phone.
His blue eyes were so bright. “It’s bullshit though, right?”
His gaze and forthright tone gave me a buzz that had nothing to do with gin. He tapped his temple. “There’s a lot going on in there, but I’m guessing that very little of it is sweet.”
Correct. Either he was extremely astute or… “Is this your schtick?” I retorted. “Find the quiet girl in the room and make her feel like she’s some sort of secret badass that only you can see?”
He laughed. Hard. A surprised, loud, genuinely elated laugh. I did that, I thought proudly.
“Who are you?” he asked, and suddenly his blue eyes were…intense.
The direct stare right at me, the timbre of his voice, the way he drew a microinch closer. My skin went warm from head to toe and my pulse went thud, Thud, THUD.
I swallowed, and his gaze went to my throat and back to my eyes. He leaned even closer, then apparently realized that was not dinner-party-appropriate, so he backed up so quickly he banged into someone behind him. A slight flush crawled up his jaw as he recovered, but his embarrassment didn’t make him look away or change the intensity of his expression.
Did I do that to him? I wasn’t the kind of woman that made men clumsy, but I could sense it. He felt the thud, Thud, THUDDING too.
“I’m Emily,” I managed, remembering to offer a hand.
His warm hand took hold of mine, not like a greeting shake, but as if he intended to keep it.

★★★★★ Amazon Review – “I really enjoyed this book. There is potential for a great series. I will definitely be reading the next one. I hope it isn’t a long wait.”

★★★★★ Amazon Review – “Really enjoyed this story! Hopefully there will be more books. I love all of this authors books. This one was different yet fantastic.”

Earth was never going back to normal. All that was left in the post-apocalyptic destruction were humans trying to find enough food to survive … and running from the aliens who had come to scavenge what was left.

Raine had never been a particularly brave woman. She preferred staying at home, sipping on a latte while reading a good romance book, rather than making an effort to become hurt by a real relationship.

She only managed to survive the nuclear war by being at the right place at the right time. Now, as if having to contend with lack of food and dodging different species of aliens wanting to make her their next meals wasn’t bad enough, the other survivors in her group blame her for being a jinx for every catastrophe that has happened to them.

How was she supposed to know the feral man who she had saved was an alien Viking from Mars? How could it be her fault that, when she snuck out to check on him, two other women from her group followed and got themselves kidnapped? And, how could she be blamed for finding herself married to an alien by the simple act of saving his life?

She wasn’t a jinx; she was simply at the wrong place at the wrong time.

Still, it hurt that her new husband was beginning to think the same way as the group of survivors and wanted to give her back to the humans.

While she wasn’t crazy about the Martian side of Skars, the Viking part of her husband was hot and, like any heroine from the stories she had read, she was determined to prove her worth to him. Well, if she wasn’t barbecued first.

Jamie Begley is not your average Kentucky girl, and while she does like to cook her southern meals, this down-home momma prefers living in her biker and alien worlds!

She ignores that statement. “What you just did, I don’t find that cute or endearing. That’s the first thing.” She tilts her head up and points a finger in my face. I try hard to hold my laugh but fail. I recover quickly though and wipe the smile off my face, but the idea of this woman who barely reaches my chest trying to chastise me is the funniest thing that’s happened to me in a long time. “Fascinatin’.” I do my best to pretend to be awed. “What’s the second thang?” “The second thing is, you’re boring. Controlling wanna-be alpha males bore me. Goodbye.” She turns and walks away. I admire the curve of her ass and the swing of her hips before I catch up with her in two long strides. I walk past her, turn around, and block her path. She stops before she can collide with my chest. “We didn’t finish our conversation.” “I did.” She does a fake pout and purses her lips together. Then something changes in her eyes. She inches closer to me and bites that plump bottom lip. “On second thought, I want to ask you something.” She whispers the words and I feel a stirring in my pants. She gestures for me to lower down, and I do, putting my ear close to her lips. “Tell me something.” Her words come out husky. “I’ll tell you anything you want to know, darlin’.” Her small hands glide across my pecs, slowly massaging me over my shirt. I flex underneath her hand. She whimpers. “Have you ever—” She stops herself and looks around, almost as if she’s too shy to ask. “Have I ever what? You can ask me whatever you want.” “Have you ever had a five-inch stiletto lodged in one of your testicles?” All shyness gone from her voice, she shoves me away, and I practically fall on my butt. I run ahead of her and block her path, make a face and wince. “Can’t say that I have. I hope you’re not into that kind of thing. I mean, I don’t mind a little bit of pain, but—” “Keep blocking me, and you’ll find out.” I throw my head back and laugh while I try to imagine that. I’m positive I can lift her with one hand without exerting much energy. I’ll have my hand wrapped around her wrist before she can take her shoe off. “The last woman who threatened me was my mama,” I tell her. That statement doesn’t impress her either. She makes a face and turns away to walk in the other direction, but I grab one of her wrists. She twists and turns to get it away from me, but I put my free hand in my pocket and wait. I even whistle a tune while she tries and fails to pull away.

I’m about to grab my purse when Alice walks into the office, walking straight toward me. “I told my son he shouldn’t keep you on when he purchased this place.” She points an accusing finger at me. “And after that stunt you pulled at Mr. Arnoldson’s party, your proved me right.” “Alice—” “Mrs. Duncan,” she corrects me. “Mrs. Duncan, I think there has been a misunderstanding. I don’t know what you’re talking about.” “You left the party,” she says, as if that explains anything. “Mom,” Xavier comes into the lobby, “what are you doing here?” “I’m letting this… woman know she failed to do her job. You have responsibilities and you neglected them. After everything my son has done for you.” “Xavier—” “It is Mr. Duncan to you,” Alice cuts in again. “Mom, please.” Xavier takes her arm and pulls her to his office. “LeAnna, stay there.” Xavier takes his mom into his office, and I hear her heated voice tell him she wants me gone. I can’t hear what Xavier says to her, but after a few minutes, he leaves his office, shutting the door behind him, and comes to my desk. I don’t know whether to run or hide when his gaze lands on me with an intensity I’ve seen from him before. Lorraine and Gerald are pretending to not watch us from their offices, and I feel a blush of embarrassment heat my cheeks.

New Release ~ Controlled Chaos ~ by ~ Nikki Ash

Title: Controlled Chaos
Series: Love & Lyrics
Author: Nikki Ash
Genre: Single Mom, Rock Star Romance
Release Date: June 23, 2022

Camden

I’ve been in love with my best friend since high school.

My biggest regret? Walking away without telling her.

I planned to. But then catastrophe struck, making us part ways without a word.

She left for Boston with her fiancé, while I left for L.A. with my band–Raging Chaos.

For the next five years, I lived and breathed music, trying to forget the beautiful girl who shattered my heart without even knowing it.

Until I see her again…

I walked away once, and I’ve learned my lesson.

Layla is my forever, not another item in my pile of regrets.

And she’s about to find that out.

Layla

The moment I saw Camden on stage, something inside me came to life

His tragic song of unrequited love was a confession that had me questioning everything.

Five years might’ve changed who we are—he’s a rock star and I’m a single mom—but my feelings for him are as strong as ever.

His lyrics make falling in love seem easy. For him—maybe it is.

Only I’ve learned the hard way that real life isn’t as simple as writing a love song.

“Mom, you don’t get it. The police are going to figure out who we are at some point. We have to come clean now, or they may think we are somehow involved.”

“You’re just being paranoid,” she says dismissively. “I’m sure they will figure out who the killer is.”

“I have to tell my boss.”

“No, you can’t!” she cries.

“The lipstick at the first two crime scenes matches the kind Dad used. You know that’s not a coincidence. When they figure out that Eddie is the brother of the ‘Lipstick Killer,’ don’t you think they will start looking into everyone related to Dad’s case? There’s a paper trail, they will figure out who we are, and if we don’t approach them first, it won’t end well for us.”

“It will end badly either way,” she snaps.
