The town’s most eligible bachelor just saved my life. I paid him back by puking on him.

Callan Hellman. Mr. Nice Guy paramedic. My best friend.
He buys my friends flowers when he knows they’ve had a hard day. Who does that? Callan’s the guy every girl wants to date and take home to mama. Not me though. We’re just friends. Have been since elementary school. I was the weird girl who kept him laughing with my antics, even when his father abandoned his family and Callan hid those scars behind his smile.
But due to my sudden medical diagnosis at twenty-four, Callan insists I move in with him. I accept and soon regret it. Since when did he grow all those muscles, and why is he allergic to wearing shirts? I’m getting white-picket-fences-feelings I have no business feeling, and try as I might to suppress them, Callan makes a bold move that proves he’s carried a love-shaped torch for me for years.
Turns out, best friends make the best lovers, but when Callan’s daddy issues come between us, will his well-meaning brothers be able to patch us up and get our hearts beating together again? Or have I just lost the best friend I’ll ever have?

“Say the word and I’ll back off forever, Cricket. All it takes is a simple no and I’ll never bring this up again, but I gotta tell you, I don’t want to back off. I want to taste your lips and feel your body pressed against me. Preferably with less clothing.” I leaned down and traced a kiss along her neck, seeing the way her breathing kicked up to that of a sprinter. “Tell me to stop, angel.”

She swallowed hard and every cell in my body froze, waiting for an answer. No matter how much it pained me—and good lord would it pain me for the rest of my life—but if she said no I’d honor that and never let her feel my disappointment.

That moment in the kitchen the other night had shown me a tiny morsel of hope, that maybe, just maybe, Cricket felt the same heart stopping excitement when we were together. If there was even a small window of chance, I had to take my shot. Watching my older brothers find love had taken those feelings I’d harbored for Cricket over the years and given them an urgency I could no longer stuff down.

Her blue eyes were eating me up, the flush from earlier turning into a forest fire on her cheeks. Her voice came out on a barely-there breath but I still heard it.

“I don’t want you to stop, Cal.”

“Please, I need you, Zoey,” Anna says again. “I wouldn’t ask if this wasn’t completely urgent.”

“Anna, you ask me literally every time you need anything.” I cross my arms, trying hard not to smile as my sister gives me her sweetest of puppy looks.

“You love helping me.” She pats my hair. You would never guess she’s the older sister here. But she’s not wrong. She’s my universe. I am here for everything she needs, no questions asked. I learned my lesson back when we were young. The one time it mattered, I wasn’t there for her, and it shattered everything. I’ll never make that mistake again.

“What if I help you back home in LA? We could figure out what Mike is up to together. Girl power. Sisterhood of the traveling penis. All that.”

“Zo, the cruise is where I need the help,” Anna says. “You can easily pass as me in photos that aren’t close-ups. Keeping my Instagram full of cruise shots is the perfect distraction for Mike while I follow him around LA.”

“I’ll help you however I can, but I would be most useful on land.”

“I know you hate even the thought of a cruise. But think of it this way. It’ll be much better than lying around watching TV in your tiny apartment back in LA while you rest your ankle. I’m pretty sure you had no other plans next week.”

“There’s plenty to do in LA, even with a sprained ankle.”

“You’re supposed to be resting, not running all over. At least on a cruise you can lounge at the pool, have all your meals taken care of, and beach it up in each port of call.”

I let out a long sigh. I hate that she’s right. Being marginally injured is the most boring possible status to have. I can sort of do everything, but I’m not supposed to do anything. It’s killing me. But if I still can’t run, jump, or climb at high speed after the break in filming for our big Meghan Marconi action thriller? That would be worse. That would jeopardize my entire career as a stunt double.

“I… but…” There has to be a reason I shouldn’t go on the cruise. I mean, I’ve summited Mount Kilimanjaro, sky-dived Interlaken, scaled El Capitan with my bare hands, and flipped a car off the London Bridge. Can you imagine me sitting around eating buffet with a bunch of retirees? “I was going to do a lot of upper body training at that new gym near the studio next week.”

“So were you planning to seduce a certain someone who’s been talking up his membership there?” Anna purses her lips.

“No.” I glare at her. “I’m not into Grant. I mean, whoever you’re talking about.”

“Why don’t you invite him to come on the cruise?” Anna cocks her head, one eyebrow raised.

“It’s easy enough to transfer a cruise ticket to someone else. I can give him Mike’s. A free trip with my gorgeous sister? Come on, he’d go.”

I could laugh. Anna knows I’m incapable of inviting a man to coffee, let alone a cruise. And a seduction at sea, by me?

“I am not inviting Grant Kevlar! We only met a month ago, in this very trailer. He would never go on a Caribbean Cruise with me, even if it’s free.”

“Who says I wouldn’t go on a free Caribbean Cruise with my new BFF?” Jamie Von Burger, my favorite hair stylist of all time- who I also met a month ago in this trailer- blows in the door, wet as a sewer rat. Jamie drops his umbrella, and water sprays the room. “I’m dying to get out of this Louisiana swamp. Please tell me you weren’t making up the idea of a jaunt to the Caribbean. I want to drink Piña Coladas in the sun with you, babes.”

Jamie air-kisses my cheek and his beard tickles my skin, while his long flowing locks cascade forward in a silken waterfall. “We’re a dream team. Think of the boys we could slay.”

Of course, at this very moment, in walks Grant Kevlar himself. Upon hearing Jamie’s words, he raises his eyebrows at me, a delectable smile playing over his soft lips. My heart stutter-stops. He’s the stunt double to the hunkiest of hunky actors, Zander Zane, but somehow, he’s much darker and sexier than his silver screen counterpart could ever be. I’d so go on a cruise if he was there. Even though I’d never admit it, maybe a small part of me hoped I’d bump into him at a certain LA gym.

“Jamie and Zoey are taking a Caribbean Cruise next week.” Anna smiles. Jamie widens his eyes at her. I narrow mine. That little skunk.

I pried my laptop from my backpack, powered it up, and typed the words, “Carrie Stevens, Commonwealth University.” Within seconds, several article headlines flashed onto the screen, along with some random pictures below them. None of the women in the photos looked anything like Carrie, so I clicked on an Instagram link instead, where I found a treasure trove of images. The first thing I noticed was Carrie’s short, blue hair and thick makeup. This girl wasn’t the all-American-poster girl I had seen at the press conference at the Student Union Building earlier, although there were similarities: her eye color was the same and her facial structure. I scrolled through a picture of Carrie kissing a guy with greasy, long black hair—a wild party exploding in the background. I found another pic of Carrie holding a shot glass in the air, her eyes bloodshot. The last one I saw included Carrie smoking a tightly wrapped cigarette. I peered closer, maybe not a cigarette. At that moment, Amy entered through the door. When I didn’t look up, she stopped short. “What are you doing?” She leaned over my shoulder. “That’s Carrie Stevens.” I glanced over at Amy. “She looks much different, doesn’t she?” Amy furrowed her brow. “Who? Oh, you mean the girl who went missing? The one from the press conference?” I nodded. “Yeah, weird, huh?” I pointed haphazardly over the screen. “It looks like she’s changed a lot since her high school graduation photo was taken. She could be your sister, Amy.” “Why, because she dyed her hair and put on some makeup?” Amy shrugged, before crossing my room and plopping down on my bed. “She looks better if you ask me.” “Well … yeah. It’s not a bad look. It’s just different. Do you think they questioned Henry—you know when Carrie went missing?” I turned to look at her. Amy squinted at me. “Who?” Oh my God, Amy, how could you forget HIM? I raised both hands in the air, exasperated. “You know. Henry—the man you were just screaming at.” Amy’s face opened, showing clarity. She nodded. “Oooooh, you mean, Norman Bates. Yes, I’m sure they did. Why?”

Joey

I don’t want to be someone’s dirty little secret. I know all too well what that feels like.
Guarding my heart means staying out of pro football player Brock Williams’s bed and out of the spotlight. But after all these years, he’s exactly like I remember, charming, determined, and used to getting what he wants. And what he wants now is me.
The chemistry between us is undeniable. And the guy I always saw as a player is now the one who makes my heart beat fast—the one who leaves dirty love notes on my pillow.
Oh, yeah… he also happens to be my brother’s best friend.

Brock

Hooking up with Joey is a bad idea, but that’s not going to stop me.
I remember the first time we met. Joey showed up at campus to visit her brother, and when she came walking out in that little yellow bikini, I stopped seeing her as my best friend’s little sister and saw her as someone I desired but could never have. It turns out I was wrong.
For now, it’s stolen moments and promises on paper… of all the things I’m going to do once I make her mine. Her brother might not forgive me, but she’s worth the risk. I can’t deny myself any longer.
I’m tired of sitting on the sidelines. It’s time to execute the play and show Joey how our story ends.

New Release ~ Not Over You ~ by ~ Whitley Cox

Title: Not Over You
Author: Whitley Cox
Release: October 1, 2022
Genre: second-chance, closet Dom, brat heroine, cop romance, romantic comedy, thanksgiving comedy, heroine with PTSD

She’s thankful for many things this year, but her ex moving back to town isn’t one of them.

Four years ago, Officer Jordan Lassiter swept Rayma Young off her feet, making the twenty-year-old finally feel safe and loved. His quiet, calm, take-charge attitude made it easy for her to trust him with all of her secrets—even the dark ones.
Eager to prove himself as a rookie cop, Jordan accepted a transfer too far away for their relationship to work. Heartbroken, they broke up but remained friends. Or at least that’s what she thought …
Three years later, Jordan’s back and thinks they can just pick up right where they left off.
Not happening.
Hurt and angry for ghosting her, Rayma has slammed her walls back up and not even Jordan and his patient control will convince her to give him back her heart.
But when they wind up at the same Thanksgiving dinner, it’s all Rayma can do to remain strong as happy memories begin to crack the protective shell she’s forged around her heart, while Jordan does everything he can to win her back.
Except give her the one thing she needs.
His trust.

“It’s date number six, Jordan …” Rayma said, exasperated, horny, and looking hotter than she’d ever looked—in her opinion. “Can you at least kiss me for fuck’s sake?”

Jordan’s mouth twisted as he tried to hide his smile. “You really don’t care who can hear you, do you?”

Rayma rolled her eyes. “Sure fucking don’t. This is all just a game to you, isn’t it?”

“Couldn’t be further from a game, Rayma,” Jordan said, ushering them forward as they waited in line for a busy new restaurant that had just opened up downtown. Rayma had been trying to get a reservation for ages since everyone in her classes was just raving about the place, but so far, she hadn’t had any luck. Jordan, however, appeared to have pulled some strings and they had a reservation for eight o’clock.

She’d changed her outfit four times that night before finally deciding on an adorable but also ridiculously sexy long-sleeved black dress that hit her on her upper thigh and showed off what little cleavage she had in a lace-trimmed sweetheart neckline. Her black boots with the four-inch heels hit her knees, and the black leather jacket that she was also permanently borrowing from Pasha’s closet tied it all together perfectly. She kept her hair down in thick waves and wore tear-drop cubic zirconia earrings, because, well, she was a starving student, she ain’t got the scratch for diamonds.

Even with Jordan’s reservations, the restaurant was still packed and people were forced to wait outside in the cold as the staff hurried to clear and re-set tables.

She shivered where she stood, questioning her choice of attire since her entire thighs were exposed to the elements and a sharp breeze from the harbor was tickling her ass cheeks.

“Here.” He tugged her in front of him, wrapped his arms around her front and plastered her back to his chest. He pulled the sides of his open peacoat around her, enveloping her in his heat and decadent scent. “Better?”

“Infinitely,” she said. She pushed her ass back against his crotch and was pleased with the slight hitch to his breath. At least he wasn’t immune to her advances and friend-zoning her, which was what she thought was happening after date number two and he still didn’t even kiss her.

By date four she thought maybe she had bad breath or stunk. But after a thorough pit sniff and a lot of mouthwash, she determined that wasn’t the case, either.

Date five had her ready to end things right then and there, but then when he said he made reservations at Ellapora since the owner was a friend of a friend, she decided she’d at least see how date seven went before she decided to cut the hot, celibate cop loose.

She did another little hip shimmy and smiled to herself when he groaned and his cock jerked in his dress pants against the crease of her ass. “Careful,” he warned.

A Canadian West Coast baby born and raised, Whitley is married to her high school sweetheart, and together they have two beautiful daughters and a fluffy dog. She spends her days making food that gets thrown on the floor, vacuuming Cheerios out from under the couch and making sure that the dog food doesn’t end up in the air conditioner. But when nap time comes, and it’s not quite wine o’clock, Whitley sits down, avoids the pile of laundry on the couch, and writes.

A lover of all things decadent; wine, cheese, chocolate and spicy erotic romance, Whitley brings the humorous side of sex, the ridiculous side of relationships and the suspense of everyday life into her stories. With single dads, firefighters, Navy SEALs, mommy wars, body issues, threesomes, bondage and role-playing, Whitley’s books have all the funny and fabulously filthy words you could hope for.

Chapter One

Reese

“We’re going out tonight.”

I looked up from the half-decorated cake in front of me. “We are?” I tipped my head to the side and pushed my glasses up my nose. “It’s Wednesday.”

Kerry leaned against the stainless-steel counter and folded her arms over her chest. “Yes, we are, and I am going to ignore how you sounded like a hundred-year-old woman who lives with seven cats and is in bed by six. It doesn’t matter that it is Wednesday. We are young and going out for a night of fun.”

I scoffed and grabbed a piping bag filled with green buttercream. “I don’t think twenty-nine is young, Kerry.” I pipped green leaves around the pale pink rose and trailed a large fern toward the edge of the cake.

“But you aren’t dead, Reese. You’re closer to twenty-one than you are sixty, girlfriend. We’re going out tonight, and you are not going to weasel your way out of it.”

“Kerry,” I groaned. “I don’t want to go out. How about you come over to my place? I’ll order from that Indian place you like, and we can watch a movie. Oh,” I gasped, “We could even play Monopoly.”

Kerry buried her face in her hands. “Oh my god, Reese. You did not just suggest Monopoly?” she groaned. She scrubbed her hands down her face and sighed.

What was wrong with Monopoly? It was a fun game. Who didn’t like to own Park Avenue and be a little doggie moving around the board? “What if I let you be the doggie?” I always was the dog, but if Kerry wanted to be it, I could let that happen this one time.

“Argh,” Kerry moaned. “I don’t want to be the dog unless you are talking about doggy style with a hot guy from the party we are going to.”

I snapped upright and scanned the area. “You can’t say that when we’re working!” Thankfully the bakers had left for the day, and it was just me and Kerry in the back of the bakery.

Layers Bakery was my pride and joy. I had opened it three years ago, and even though I had scrimped and barely gotten by that first year, our doors were open, and the bakery was thriving now.

Well, as long as the cases kept selling out every day and the cake orders kept coming in, we were thriving.

“You and I are the only ones back here, Reese. Chill out. Tessa and Rue are taking care of the register, and they can’t hear us back here.”

I freaking hoped so. “They’re only seventeen, Kerry. Their parents would kill me if they knew you were talking about getting it on with some guy.” I switched to my pink piping bag and added a few tiny rosebuds.

“Pfft,” Kerry puffed out. “Your face would be beet red, and your ears would burn if you heard the things those two talk about while cleaning the cases.”

I shook my head. “I don’t want to know, Kerry. As long as they are working, I don’t care what they are talking about.” And what they talked about probably wasn’t that bad. I had been seventeen before and was not talking about doggy style or anything. “And I’m sure you are overreacting about what they talk about. Tessa and Rue are lovely girls.”

Kerry tapped her foot and pursed her lips. “You’re so sweet and delusional, Reese. You think the whole world is just swirls of sugary buttercream and peaks of fluffy meringue.”

I tipped my head to the side and smiled. “I don’t see anything wrong with that.”

She laughed lightly and pointed to the right corner of the cake. “You need a rose there.”

I wrinkled my nose. “You think so? I liked the open space there.”

“You’re the master cake decorator, but I think there needs to be a rose or something there.” Kerry shrugged.

“Let me finish what I had in mind, and then you can tell me if you think there still needs to be a rose there.” I still had the border and another bunch of flowers to add to the cake before I wrote happy birthday.

“You’re the boss.” She held her hands in the air. “But I will tell you if it sucks when you’re done.”

I held up one finger. “Once in two years, you had to tell me that, Kerry, and I still argue that you were wrong.” I finally gave in that the cross I had piped looked slightly like a penis with flowers around it. Slightly.

“I saved you from serving that lady an Easter penis cake, Reese, and you damn well know it.”

I flitted my hand at her. “Go make sure Tessa and Rue are working while I finish this cake.”

Kerry pushed off the table and wiped her hands on her apron. “Fine, but you and I are going out tonight.”

I rolled my eyes and leaned over the cake. “Fine, Kerry. We’ll go out tonight, but I don’t want to be out past midnight. Jason is opening tomorrow, but I need to be here by nine to start on the cake orders for the weekend.”

“Yeah, yeah,” Kerry mumbled. “I’ll have you home by midnight, Cinderella. I work tomorrow, too.” She strutted through the swinging doors, and I was finally alone to finish this cake in peace.

I loved Kerry, but man, she could talk my ear off. And she was always trying to get me to go out with some random guy she met at the bar. This was new, however.

She usually went to some party without me and threw random guys she met but didn’t want for herself. Kerry was five years younger than me and still living her party days.

I was well past those days.

Hell, I never had those days.

Straight out of high school, I went to the local tech school, where I learned cake decorating. I worked wherever possible but always knew I wanted to own my bakery. For nine years, I worked two jobs at a time bouncing between grocery store bakeries and small bakeries until I had enough money for a down payment on my bakery. I didn’t have time to party and go out all the time.

Even now, I don’t have the time to do that.

I finished decorating the cake and called Kerry.

She pushed through the swinging doors with a donut and iced coffee in one hand. “I’m on break,” she called defensively.

As if I would say anything. Kerry talked nonstop, but she also worked her butt off.  “Come look at this and tell me if you still think I need something in the corner?”

Kerry moved in front of the cake and took a huge bite of her donut. “Have I told you that Ben’s deep-fried croissant donuts are amazing?” she muttered.

I rolled my eyes and squirted my leftover icing into the large bowl. “Are you buttering me up before you tell me the cake isn’t good?”

She finished chewing and took a sip of her coffee.

“Kerry,” I whined. “Just tell me if it sucks or not.” I was confident in what I did, but I was still human. I knew that not everyone would like what I did and that I wasn’t always right. Maybe I did need something more in the corner besides just the border.

She tilted her head to the side and nibbled on the donut. “I mean…”

I was going to kick her in the shin if she didn’t spit it out. “You mean what?” I demanded.

“I mean, it’s gorgeous.”

I let out the breath I had been holding, and my shoulders sagged. “Thank god.”

Kerry moved to the side and leaned against the table. “As if you were actually worried. I’m just waiting for the day when I can find just one flaw in the amazing cakes you do.”

I emptied the rest of my bags and popped out the tips. “There are fifty flaws in that cake. I just covered them all with more buttercream.”

Kerry chuckled. “And I think that is what makes you a pro at this. You know how to make your mistakes into tiny little birds.”

I furrowed my brow. “There are no birds on the cake, Kerry.”

“That’s just Bob Ross coming out of me.”

“No idea what or who you are talking about.” I scrapped my spatula on the bowl and gathered all of my dirty tools.

“Drop those in the sink. Rue is on dish duty tonight,” Kerry advised.

I dumped all the dirty dishes in the sink and wiped down the table.

Kerry grabbed a pale yellow and lilac-colored Layers Bakery cake box and slid the cake into the box. “I’m going to split right away at six. I’ll be at your place by seven.”

I grimaced and plugged the sink. “I was hoping you would forget.”

Kerry blew out a raspberry. “As if I was going to forget about going to a party at SOS.”

I squirted some soap into the sink. “SOS?” I asked. I had no idea what that was other than a distress call. God knows I was in distress since Kerry was making me go to a party.

“Sons of Sin motorcycle club,” she shrugged.

“You say that as if it’s normal for you and me to go hang out with a bunch of bikers on a Wednesday night.” Kerry was insane. There was no way I would ever be able to marginally fit in at a motorcycle club.

My life was donuts, bread, coffee, and swirls of sugary buttercream. Motorcycles and the bikers who rode them didn’t enter into that world. Ever.

Kerry finished packing up the cake and set the order slip on top. “It’s not normal, but I’ve been to a few of their parties. They’re pretty fun.” She lifted the cake and walked to the walk-in cooler.

I followed her into the cooler and leaned against the wire shelf on the right. “I am not going to fit in at some Sons of Anarchy party, Kerry.”

“Sons of Sin,” she laughed. “I don’t think we’ll run into Opie and Jax tonight.”

I rolled my eyes. “That would be the only thing that could make me want to come with you.”

“Jax and Opie could totally make me come, too.” Kerry winked at me over her shoulder and set the cake on the pick-up rack. “Clay could even get a rise out of me on a good day.”

I cringed and shuddered. “Oh my god, Kerry. You are insane.” I had watched Sons of Anarchy when it was on TV, and I knew there was no way Clay could evoke any feeling in me other than vomiting.

She threw her hand up in the air. “Don’t kink shame me, Reese. I can’t help that I might have a type that could do it for me?”

“It’s not your type if you don’t know if you like it,” I reasoned.

“Well, you may be right. Maybe I’ll need to find a Clay tonight and see if he is my type.” She pointed her finger at me, and her eyes lit up. “And that is why you need to come with me. You need to be my wing woman. I need you there to ensure I find the right Clay and not some crusty Clay.”

I shook my head. “I think staying home and playing Monopoly is better than dodging crusty Clay’s at the local biker joint.”

Kerry cringed. “Don’t ever say biker joint again,” she winced. “I swear you are at least fifty.”

I raised my middle finger. “Does this look fifty to you?”

She shook her head. “No, but you staying home instead of coming out with me looks a hell of a lot like fifty. Might even look like seventy.”

That was it. If Kerry wanted me to go out with her tonight, and look for a Clay, then that was what she would get. “You better be at my door at six fifty-nine, or I’m not going.”

Kerry’s jaw dropped, and she clapped her hands together like a happy seal. “Yes,” she shouted.

I wasn’t sure I had made the best choice, but it would at least shut Kerry up. Hopefully, tonight was a major bust, and she would never ask me to go out with her again.

That was all I could hope for.

Genre: Second Chance, Rock Star Romance

From USA Today Bestselling author Nikki Ash comes a hate to lovers, second chance, rock star romance.
Braxton
Our senior year, I promised my girl forever.
Forever, as it turned out, wasn’t enough. She told me so in her actions. When she took a match to my life, burning it to ash.
I headed to LA with my band—Raging Chaos—like we always planned, while Kaylee went to college, taking my damaged heart with her.
This was where our story was supposed to end.
Only six years later, our lives collide again.
Kaylee is the only thing I ever loved more than music, and I wish I could hate her for it, but the line between love and hate is thin, and often straddled.
And the thing about collisions? They result in deadly debris.
Kaylee
When you love someone, you let them go. But what I did was so much worse.
Because instead of pushing him away, I shoved Braxton straight over the edge.
I’ve spent the past several years avoiding him, trying to make things right.
When my reputation has been dragged through the mud, and I’m given the opportunity to clean it up, I have no choice but to cross paths with him again.
Being around Braxton is a harsh reminder of the way I lit his life up in flames, but I’m not sure he knows I’ve been burned, too.
If suffering in silence is the cost, I’ll pay the price to make things right.
I just hope our history won’t play on repeat and he’ll see me as more than the stupid girl with the lit match.
AUTHOR’S NOTE: Like real life, the characters are far from perfect, make morally gray decisions, and deal with subjects that may be sensitive for some readers. If you are looking for a safe romance, this series is not for you. Trigger warnings (which contain spoilers) can be found on my website.

I never thought I’d have a real-life meet cute, but the minute Crossland Parker walks into my life, it starts feeling like I’m living in the pages of a romance novel.

He sweeps me off my feet, and I find myself falling fast and hard for the rough around the edges mechanic. He’s a troubled bad boy with a heart of gold.

Cross fits into my life effortlessly, even sharing my love of books. He’s everything I didn’t know I wanted in a man. Attentive, sweet, a little bit possessive. He’s also my biggest source of support when I decide I want to buy the building next door so I can expand my business. So what if he has a criminal record? No one is perfect.

Unless you ask my stepfather. He expects nothing less than perfection, but not even I could ever come close.

Cross

After spending too many years wandering when I was released from prison, I came back to Abbott Ridge to start over.

I wasn’t expecting Mila Santos to fall into my arms, but I’m irrevocably drawn to the curvy little beauty who owns the bookstore. She’s a good girl, too good for a guy like me.

Our relationship develops faster than most, but I spent too many years of my life locked up. Now that I’m out, I refuse to waste a single second. I’m still not sure I deserve someone as sweet as Mila, but if she accepts me and all my faults, there’s no way I’m letting her go. Only a fucking fool would do that.

My past is no secret, and I knew the day would come when someone would try to use it against me. I just didn’t expect it to happen so soon.

Is happily ever after possible when a good girl falls for the guy from the wrong side of the tracks?

The Book Boyfriend is a standalone, wrong side of the tracks romance that is part of the Meet Cute Book Club multi-author series.

She’s fucking adorable.

Mila is still standing in the spot where I left her when I pass by the bookstore’s front window.

Grinning, I toss her a wink and keep walking, picturing the beautiful blush that stains her skin when she’s flustered.

I love how affected she is by me.

I knew Mila was gorgeous when I saw her from across the street yesterday, but up close… damn.

She’s a stunner.

Easily the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen.

And I get to see her again on Friday.

I came to the bookstore today hoping to see her even though I knew there was a good chance that she wasn’t available, but I had to shoot my shot. I’m fucking relieved she isn’t with somebody. It would have sucked if I put myself out there only to find out I didn’t stand a chance. I’ll admit, part of me can’t believe she agreed to go out with me, but I’m happy she did.

Halfway back to the garage, reality sets in.

What was I even thinking going in there?

Mila is sweet as hell, far too good for a roughneck like me.

I’m a felon for fuck’s sake.

No. Fuck that.

My criminal record doesn’t define me.

I have to stop letting my past rule my life. I’m more than some guy who got locked up for trying to defend someone who didn’t deserve it. I paid the price for my mistakes. I did my time and now I need to move on.

I deserve happiness as much as anyone else.

As long as I’m honest and don’t try to hide it, Mila doesn’t seem like the type that would hold my past against me. I’ll be up front with her about it and let the chips fall where they may.

I’ve got a good feeling about her.

“Who’s the girl?” Bishop asks as I walk into the garage.

My brows dip low in confusion and I look around the bay, not seeing anyone. “What girl?”

“The girl that put that goofy ass smile on your face,” he says with a knowing look. “Only a woman can make a man smile like that.”

I hadn’t realized I was smiling when I came in, but I feel one stretch across my face now.

“Her name is Mila.”

“From the bookstore?”

“You know her?” I ask, closing the distance between us.

“I know of her.”

At my look of surprise, Bishop rolls his eyes. “You said it yourself yesterday, Cross. Abbott Ridge is a small town.” He turns his attention back to the engine he’s working on. “Pass me that wrench.”

Knowing which one he wants without asking, I grab it and hand it over.

“The real question is…” He pauses to look at me. “How do you know her?”

Reaching behind me, I pull the book out of my back pocket.

Chuckling, Bishop shakes his head. “Should have known. Can’t believe you read that girly shit.”

“Don’t hate,” I tell him. “This girly shit just got me a date with perfection on Friday night.”

He eyes the book. “Well, hell. Maybe I need to pick up a new hobby. Mila’s a pretty girl.”

“Find your own pretty girl, Bish,” I say, popping him on the back of the head with the book. “Mila is mine.”

Fucker laughs. “It’s like that?”

“Damn right it’s like that.” I drop the book on top of the tool cabinet and grab a beer from the fridge. “I saw her yesterday when I was leaving the tattoo shop.”

“No doubt a gorgeous girl like that grabbed your attention.”

“Hell yeah. Would have talked to her yesterday, but she was on her way out. Almost got discouraged when I watched her drop into the passenger seat of a sweet ass ride, but decided to take a chance anyway.”

“Black Chevelle?” he asks, glancing up.

“Yeah.”

He nods. “Her younger brother, Mateo.”

“Damn, Bish,” I say, dropping my ass onto a stool. “You really do know everyone in this town. Bet you got all the good gossip.”

Bishop snorts. “I ain’t got shit. Mateo spent a lot of time here. Rented one of the bays so he could restore that beauty of his. He had the know-how, but needed somewhere to do the work.”

“I’d love to get my hands on that car.”

“Good luck with that. He won’t let anyone else work on it. Not even me.”

That makes me chuckle. “I respect that. Nothing more important to a man than his car.”

“And his girl,” he says, no so subtly turning the conversation back to Mila. “Where are you taking her?”
