“You do not need to be clever,” she said, her mouth softening as she turned toward him. “Just say what you are thinking.”

The shadows and shards of firelight played over her high cheekbones and lovely chin. Lord, how he wanted to run his finger over that soft skin. Say what he was thinking? Can I throw up your skirts right here and kiss every inch of your lush body? Then carry you into that castle and make you scream my name as you burst with pleasure?

He opened his mouth and paused. “Uh… Are ye hungry?” Bloody hell.

“No,” she said with a shake of her head.

“Do ye need to use the privy?”

She shook her head again, her lips turning up slightly.

They stared at each other for another breath, and he curled his hand around her small one. It felt fragile in his large palm and yet he knew how strong Lark was. “Can I kiss ye?”

The world around him vanished into darkness as he waited for her answer. She gave a small nod, and he inhaled. Stepping into her, his lips bent toward her, and he waited to see if she would pull away. Lark kept her head tipped up to him, her eyes open, and he pressed a gentle kiss on her soft mouth.

The heat of her body soaked into him. He wasn’t sure if he’d pulled her into him or she’d melted forward, but his arms were around her so that he could feel the softness of her curves pressed into him. Softness to mold against his hardness.

The feel of her, the delicious smell of her, mixed with the detailed memories of his dreams, erupted a firestorm within him. He stroked down her back. She trembled slightly, and Adam caught her face with one hand, guiding her against him to deepen the kiss. She was letting him touch her! Slow. Keep it slow. Do not ruck up her skirts and rut with her against the chapel wall.

His rational thoughts faded quickly to fragmented whispers. He’d been so close to her, yet she’d been untouchable, for days and uncomfortable nights. I was right. The heat has already caused him to peel off his hoodie. I’m mesmerized at his muscles popping and straining against his tight T-shirt. He approaches quickly, too quickly. I try to hide the fact that I’ve been staring at him by slinking into the dark corner, but he rushes up and turns the corner quicker than I expected.

Our bodies collide. My green juice spatters between our chests, the cool liquid causing an instant mess. My gaze lowers to his broad, muscled chest as the liquid begins to blend into his dark T-shirt.

“Fudge,” I whisper and close my eyes, knowing my choice of an all-white outfit for a move is my latest epic fail. I have no one to blame but myself.

I feel the warm tingle of his finger as he lifts my chin slowly. I force open my eyes to meet his soft, sympathetic gaze.

“Sorry about that, Princess. I don’t know how I missed seeing you when it’s clearly the best sight here.”

I blink and try to process his words. “Poppy,” I whisper.

“Yeah, I know,” he returns.

“But you called me Princess.”

He takes a small step back as the liquid from the juice drips down my chest to my shorts and makes its way down my legs.

He whips his T-shirt off in a flash and uses the shirt like a rag, pressing it against my legs in order to stop the progress of the juice before it reaches my white Converse sneakers. “Poppy is too ordinary. You deserve to be called Princess. Princess P, it shall be.”

The insane statement is delivered like a proclamation.

“No man is ever going to be good enough for my little girl,” he whispered huskily. “But Travis is pretty damn close.”

I laughed lightly and rolled my eyes to the ceiling to ward off the waterworks. With a soft kiss to my cheek, my father released my hands and moved to my side. Looping my arm through his, I used the other hand to pick up my dress, so it didn’t drag as we walked down the stairs. With a nod of satisfaction that everyone was ready, my mother ushered the girls out with the exception of Anna and led the way down the hall. My father and I followed with my cousin on my heels, making sure the train on the dress stayed off the floor.

My face hurt; my smile was so broad. Everyone around me was as well, and I felt like I was floating on a cloud. We reached the stairs, and I kept my eyes on my feet, so I didn’t trip, allowing my father to lead me. When I reached the bottom, I looked up and found Max, the best man, waiting at the back door with a look on his face that I couldn’t identify. Confusion and concern rolled through me since he should have been at the altar with Travis.

“What’s going…”

“I’m sorry, Kat,” he apologized, cutting my question off.

I gulped.

“Sorry for what?”

My stomach rolled with nausea.

“We can’t find Travis.”

“What do you mean you can’t find him?” I asked, shaking my head.

I felt Anna come to my side and felt her hands grip my elbow while my mother moved to my father’s other side. A united front as we’d been my entire life. It brought little comfort, especially when the next words came out of his mouth.

“He packed a bag and took off,” he explained, tugging gently on his tie. “He won’t answer his phone.”

“His parents?” I choked out.

“His mother left last night, and his father is here, but severely hungover. He doesn’t know where he is either.”

My knees threatened to buckle. This was a mistake. Something must have come up at the office, and he ran late coming back. He would be here. He had to be here. We were getting married.

“This was with my tux.”

The envelope, marked with the bed and breakfast logo, had my name on the front in his clear, concise handwriting. I didn’t fight the tears, I let them flow down my cheeks as I took it from him with a shaky hand. Without letting go of my father, I opened it and pulled out the small piece of paper.

I can’t go through with this. I’m sorry.

After what feels like an eternity, the mystery man looks up at me. His extremely blue eyes pin me to the bed. He freezes when he sees me staring back. This is really awkward, partly because I have no clue who this person is and also because I find him unbelievably attractive.

I guess I’ll make the first move here. “Hi” is all I can manage in a shy voice.

He leans over and starts talking quietly. “Hi, how are you feeling? Do you remember me?” I swallow and with an ounce of embarrassment I say, “I’m sorry, I don’t.” He smiles and runs his thumb gently down my cheek gently and smiles at me. His touch, wow! It feels like he is leaving a trail of tingles that follow his thumb. Who the hell is this person? That is a rather intimate gesture. Should I be worried? “I’m Michael. I’m the one who helped you get to the hospital. I waited for you to get out of surgery yesterday and came up to see you when you left recovery, but you were still out of it.”

That’s right: I vaguely remember a man helping me. “I can never thank you enough for what you did for me. Without you I probably would have died on the sidewalk. Thank you isn’t enough, but it’s all I can say right now.”

He gives me a shy smile and is quiet for a moment. Then he speaks.

“You really don’t need to thank me. I’m just so relieved that you’re going to be OK. The doctors said you are going to need a lot of follow-up, but you’ll be able to walk and make a full recovery.”

I suddenly feel a little annoyed that this guy knows more about my condition than I do. “You spoke to the doctor?” I try to keep the edge out of my tone.

“Yeah, I was waiting here after the EMTs brought you in and they mistook me for your boyfriend. After you came out of surgery, Dr. Wong came out and told me you had to have a blood transfusion and they repaired muscle damage in your leg. He said you were lucky the damage was in one spot so he didn’t need to amputate.”

Amputate? What the fuck! No one mentioned amputation! Tears start streaming down my face. God, what is with me? I haven’t cried this much since I was 17. Now those memories make me cry more.

“Hey, it’s OK. I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to upset you. Everything is going to be fine.” He stands and leans down to cradle my head against his hard chest and kisses the top of my head. In a moment of weakness, I grab hold of his strong arms and bury my head in his chest. I take in his incredible scent and just cry as he comforts me. For the first time since I woke up last night, I feel safe. Too safe. I feel him kiss the top of my head again and hold me tighter and I am scared to realize I really like being in this stranger’s arms. I pull away and he releases me. “I’m sorry. Thank you. I’m usually not an overly emotional person. I just can’t make sense of any of this.” I don’t tell him the “this” I am referring to isn’t the accident, but rather my feelings toward this virtual stranger who saved my life.

I loved being her mother and I loved watching her grow into this incredibly beautiful person, both inside and out. She was such a gift to me. To have it all ripped away so suddenly broke me.

“What am I doing here?” I retorted. “I think it is me who should be asking you that question, but then again, I can see the glaring appeal in the setup you have here,” I added, swinging my arm in the direction of the beach for added emphasis.

“Retirement doesn’t always have to be drab.”

“Drab?” I laughed out loud. “Yes, I can only imagine how jail would be painfully lackluster compared to this tropical utopia.”

He grabbed me by the arm and ushered us over to the side, away from the middle of the walkway.

“Listen, you can’t be here. You need to leave.” My father spoke with a hushed yet stern tone.

I jerked my arm free from his grasp, and despite the alarm bells ringing in my head, I stayed put. “I’m not going anywhere until I have answers.”

“Well, sometimes we don’t always get what we want.” He huffed.

“But you owe me.”

“I owe you nothing. Now leave.”

I gasped. “How can you say that? After all this time, how can you stand there and say that to me?”

“Simple, I cut you out of my life for a reason.”

“So, there isn’t even a little part of you that missed me, a little piece of your heart that holds any love for me . . . your daughter?” I asked, despising the level of hurt in my voice that I was powerless to mask.

I felt weak and was annoyed that he was seeing me this way.

Damaged.

Vulnerable.

Flawed.

Broken.

“No,” he simply stated.

“Why? What did I ever do that was so bad? Why didn’t you want me?”

No matter how hard I’d convinced myself I didn’t care about his opinion of me, being there with his eyes locked on mine, there was no denying it was the hardest confrontation I’d ever faced. What child didn’t need, crave, and or rely on love from their parents?

As I waited with bated breath for him to rationalize the motives behind his decision that changed the course of my life and very likely his, I found my tough girl exterior armor losing its momentum.

“Because I never did.” A sob slipped from me with his admission. “I’m a selfish bastard who never wanted a family, much less a child.” He waved.

His statement was a knife to the heart. A heart that had had its strength tested repeatedly. A heart that was done being trampled all over by those that weren’t deserving and or worthy. A heart that had hardened over time to become more resilient with every decision I’d made that had brought me to this pivotal turning point.

Plain and simple, I deserved more. I was worthy of love, and I wasn’t about to play the victim card and let his lack of affection toward me stop me from seeking and obtaining all I ought to have in life and feel fulfilled in the process.
