I want my happily-ever-after…

He wants revenge.

It all started with a lie. When I was in high school, I ruined Mr. Gallo’s reputation.

Now I’m in his classroom again. I’m older and most definitely over him.

Except, Professor Gallo isn’t over me.

Does the grumpy and hot-as-hell college professor have reason to hate me? Yes.

Does he intend to punish me for what I did to him years ago? Also yes.

Professor Luca Gallo has a lesson for me that I’m sure I will never forget.

Authors Note: Wicked Knight is book one in the Knight Duet, featuring Luca Gallo and Donata Salvatore. It is a standalone teacher-student romance set in The Society World.

I shut the door behind me with shaky hands. Now that I was here, my anger had subsided, and I couldn’t remember what had possessed me to come and argue with Professor Gallo about my grade.

Slowly, I lifted my gaze and wiped my palms on my skirt. I had expected him to be glowering at me as he liked to do. But instead, he was focused on the papers in front of him.

Had I misheard him? Maybe he hadn’t been talking to me when he said the word enter. Did I just barge in on him in his own office…again? Well, this time it was different.

Before, when I was fifteen, I had been determined to hand in my v-card. This time, it was about something way more important. My academic career at Columbia.

“Don’t linger. What do you want?” He asked, without looking up from his reading.

“Um.” I glanced around his big office to calm down.

Guest professors seemed to get the red-carpet treatment. My chemistry professor shared an office with another colleague, and that room wasn’t even as big as this one.

There was something old school and manly about the space. Had Luca brought in all the leather furniture and books? He even had a reading nook facing the window, with a view of a hidden courtyard beyond it. This was, for sure, all his stuff, neatly organized and strategically placed.

Did this mean he was planning to stay beyond his temporary assignment? Butterflies flapped wildly in my belly. I still had two more years of undergrad. It would be nice to have him so close by.

I inched closer to peek at whatever had his full attention. Who the hell was Ava Conti? And why did he have a picture of her? For some stupid reason my chest hurt. That voice in my head that always made me do crazy things to get his attention got louder. I clearly saw myself swiping all the papers off his desk and throwing myself at him.

Wait. No, I couldn’t do that. I glanced up and met his angry gaze. How long had I been standing here like an idiot, ogling his office and all his things?

“Um.” He rose to his feet. “It’s not an actual sentence, Ms. Salvatore.”

Oh, so he did remember me.

“I meant, I came to talk about my grade. There seems to be a mistake.” I stood a little taller.

“A mistake? What kind of mistake?” He prowled around his desk.

He was definitely taller than I remembered. I peeked at him through my eyelashes. Then glanced down. Shit. I already knew that didn’t work on him. To add to my nerves, he reached for my top with those long fingers. I held my breath as he fastened the top two buttons on my blouse.

Oh no, I wasn’t trying to seduce him. Did he think that? Well, if he did. This was a clear no. He had no interest in seeing any part of me.

“Try again.” He took in a deep breath as if he was running out of patience.

“You gave me an F.” I jutted out my chin with determination.

“I know I did.” He perched himself on the edge of the desk with his legs extended out in front of him. “Are you here to give me a recount of all the grades I’ve handed out today, Ms. Salvatore?

I wake up with a slight gasp. With my head still on my pillow, I look around my room, with a sensation of being watched. Yet there’s nothing unusual. I listen, but there are no sounds outside of the ordinary. Then I feel it. The pull from my center again, just like last night.

This pulling sensation guides me out of bed and moves me to the hall, past Poppy Joe’s room, down the stairs, and to the back door. It’s coming from outside.

I slowly open the door and step onto the porch. The moon is full, and the bay is glimmering. The pull beckons me down the hill, where the grass is cool on my feet. On the dock, it’s even colder and eerily quiet. A shiver runs down my spine and arms, and the hair raises on the back of my neck. This strange force leads me to the edge of the dock, and I slowly sit down.

The water starts to glow a yellowy green as wet skin on a beautiful body emerges.

My heart races with fear, and I have the urge to run, but then a calming feeling hits me. My jaw opens, my heart pounds in my ears, and I haven’t moved a muscle.

It’s Ella.

We lock eyes for what seems like an eternity.

“I was hoping I would see you again. I am not going to hurt you,” she finally says.

I try to form a word, but nothing comes out.

“Can I sit there next to you?”

I nod. My eyes are wide, and I don’t think I’ve blinked since she appeared.

She pulls herself out of the water and fixates on me. Her cheekbones are high, accenting her large, upturned eyes. Her lips are full and rosy. Our faces are inches apart. She slowly reaches towards my face and gently drags her fingers over my forehead, down my temple and cheek, ending at my jawline.

I force myself to breathe. I’ve seen these eyes before. The green is gleaming within them, and they’re picking up a reflection. My gaze shifts from her face down her body… Instead of legs, she has a…tail, greenish in color, but I can’t tell because of the soft light radiating through it. Her tail is glowing. She’s a…mermaid.

My heart races in fear again. She grips my shoulder, and intense peace radiates through me. I’m pulled into those mesmerizing eyes, like I’m part of her and have known her my whole life. I still haven’t spoken.

“I have wanted to meet you for a long time,” she says.

Her smile is warm and natural. My initial shock is starting to wear off. She’s the most beautiful girl I’ve ever seen.

“You’re…uh…um…glowing,” I finally say.

She laughs. Beads of water drip off her long blonde hair.

“Glad you noticed. I wanted you to see me for the first time in the dark.”

“Uh-huh,” is all I can say.

“Do you want to see me again?”

“Yes,” I whisper.

“Can you meet me out here tomorrow after midnight?”

“Yes.”

She takes my hand in hers. My breath catches.

“How do you feel?” she whispers as she leans in closer.

“Like this isn’t real.”

“Good,” she says as she traces my face again.

Her touch sends a wave of energy through me. “Until tomorrow.”

Then she slips back into the water and disappears.

It takes me a few minutes, but I slowly stand up and look around. The world is asleep, but I am wide awake.

He links his fingers behind his head. “I didn’t want her. I wanted you. So fucking bad. You were supposed to be with me. Because,” his hands drop to his sides as if he’s holding lead weights, “I had feelings for you for so long. And you—”

“What?” I step closer to him, preparing for a fight. “What did I do?”

He blows out a breath. “Left with Tony.”

“Because you blew me off! All night I was giving you signs. Touching you. Moving closer. And you ignored all of them.”

“Those were signs? We’d always been like that.”

“Exactly! I wanted to kiss you. I was so excited when you invited me to the lake because I wanted alone time with you. And you blew me off like you didn’t want me!”

He steps closer so we’re toe-to-toe. “I wanted to kiss you so bad that night. It was eating me up inside.”

I bump my chest against his, getting in his face. “And I wanted you to kiss me!”

His nostrils flare as my jaw clenches. Seconds tick by as we stare at each other. My chest rises in time with his. Like a vacuum all the air is sucked from my lungs, and I can’t breathe. After years of built-up tension, a fireball of heat and passion bursts through me. I’m surprised I don’t spontaneously combust. There’s only one thing that can extinguish the flame. I clasp his face between my palms and smash my mouth to his. The brim of his cap stabs me in the forehead, but it’s the least of my concerns. I inch closer to him until the front of his cap pushes off his head. Hops and mint linger on his lips. I’m already addicted. His arm wraps around my waist, desperately clinging to me like if he lets go, he’ll lose me again. All my thoughts are consumed by Garrett. Kissing him. Him kissing me. Having our bodies flush. It’s dizzying.

I jerk away. My chest heaves as I work to collect my breath. His eyelids rise to half-mast. His normally green irises are almost black with desire.

“Fuck,” he whispers.

“Double fuck,” I murmur.

Coveting my brother’s girlfriend is one thing, but acting on it is a step too far. It’s too bad it’s a step I’ve already taken.

The first time I met Maggie Sullivan, she was my brother’s guest at Sunday dinner. That should have been enough to keep me away. It wasn’t.

The night I lost control and gave into my passion was also the night of my brother’s arrest for selling drugs—a business I was sure Maggie must have had a hand in.

Overwhelmed with guilt, I seized a chance to try out for Center Stage, a televised singing competition. Winning changed my life.

Now, years later, I’ve returned to Little Falls to reconnect with my family, and Maggie Sullivan has somehow managed to become mayor.

With only twenty-four hours until she’s reelected uncontested, I decide to throw a wrench into her perfect life.

When the race heats up, and old, unwanted feelings surface, I start to realize that Maggie might not fit the box I’ve shoved her into all these years.

Soon, I’m wondering if I want to steal the election, or if the real victory lies in winning Maggie’s heart.

I checked my watch. The first performer should have started five minutes ago. Running behind for some reason? Or fashionably late? Maybe the potential performers were intimidated by the large audience? I’d been here before with Lila for an open mic night, and the bar hadn’t been this packed.

The yellow curtain on the stage stirred. Kareena, the owner, burst through the gap to the small bit of stage in front. She looked flushed and too excited for a simple open mic night. “Ladies and Gentlemen.” She waited for everyone to quiet down.

I sat straighter in my chair. The place hummed with an unusual energy.

“Tonight, as some of you know—news like this spreads like wildfire—we have the privilege of a very special guest.” Kareena glanced behind her, her brown cheeks rosy. “Oh gosh, I am so excited.” She giggled and covered her mouth.

I frowned and eyed everyone in our party who looked equally confused. Other people in the crowd whooped and hollered as though they, too, knew the secret. What could be so special about some singer at open mic in a town barely bigger than Little Falls?

“I was going to do this big, long spiel about our guest, but he asked me to keep it simple since his appearance is last-minute. So, maybe I’ll let it be a surprise to those of you who don’t know yet.” Her grin was broad enough to split her face. “Enjoy the night, everyone!” With a flourish, she threw back the curtains and disappeared.

“That was weird,” Fernando muttered. “The only person I know who has ever inspired that kind of weirdness is—”

The curtain peeled back, and the chords of a familiar song started. My breath caught in my throat.

Grady Castillo.

I never uttered his name. Hadn’t spoken it in years. He’d burst onto the music scene with his stint on Center Stage, the talent discovery program, when I was at college in Florida. Lila had told me how crazy my town went over one of our own winning the top spot. A heap of money and a recording contract. When he only produced one successful album and then largely disappeared, I was thrilled.

“Well, I’ll be damned,” Fernando called over the familiar beat of the song. “I wonder what he’s doing back here.”

Once Doc and I were alone, he removed his reading glasses and placed them on the mahogany desk tucked against the righthand wall of the small gym. He leaned his hip against the edge.

“William, I know you care about Olivia, but your eagerness to safeguard her is exactly what will get her killed.”

“Excuse me?” I had thought he’d wanted to talk about the hunt, but this was about me? My conduct?

Doc remained calm. “I’ve never seen you like this.” He exhaled. “And as your closest thing to an uncle, I’m thrilled you found someone.” I attempted to object, but he held his finger up. “But you cannot protect her and be a supernatural hunter at the same time. It puts the lives of the humans you’re tasked with saving in jeopardy.”

Without thinking, I snapped back, “She doesn’t belong in our world.” My hands curled at my sides.

Doc shook his head like a disappointed parent. “If that were true, she wouldn’t have abilities. She not only belongs in our world, but she’s needed in it as well. If you can’t help her, then stay away from her. You’ll only hinder her growth.”

I barely heard him over the thudding in my ears. Did they all think I was the one putting her in danger? Anger festered in my gut. “What are you going to do about it?” I crossed my arms, challenging him. Did I sound like a child? Sure. Did I care? Hell no. Olivia’s safety was all that mattered.

Doc’s demeanor remained intact, but his tone turned authoritative. “Send you back to London. We could use a representative at the Hunterland Library to help Elizabeth.”

Tristan

I always get my way.

Fighting is my life. In the ring, on the street, there’s no problem that can’t be solved with my fists.

When an injury puts me on the sidelines, my family sends me down South on business. They want me to take over Doyle Whiskey, a job they claim is perfect for me.

And it is, until the owner’s daughter stumbles back into my life.

Evie’s not the shy, awkward girl I knew as a kid. She’s beautiful and fierce, and she doesn’t need me.

Until she does.

Just because I can’t step into the ring, it doesn’t mean I’ve forgotten how to fight. Especially for a girl like Evie.

Evie

Our marriage might be a sham, but our friendship isn’t.

When my father’s debts land him in hot water, there’s a lot more than just money on the line. My freedom is at risk, and if I don’t figure something out, I could end up married off as payment.

But then Tristan shows up to take over our distillery. He’s as gorgeous as ever, but he’s not the sweet, mischievous boy I crushed on as a kid. He makes deals and takes what he wants and when he sees that I’m in danger, he takes me, too. In marriage.

I know he’s protecting his own interests by protecting me, but it doesn’t matter. I’ve wanted him my whole life, and I’ll do whatever it takes to protect him right back.

Because the queen’s the most powerful piece on the board.

Whiskey Kisses is a steamy, dark, Irish mob romance. Marriage of convenience, m/f, friends-to-lovers, forced proximity.

“He and Danny Deschamps made an agreement. If I marry Cole, all of Daddy’s debts to them will be canceled. And then they’ll pay off his other debts, too, because we’ll all be one big, happy family.” Her voice breaks, and she covers her face.

Anger ripples through me like a stormy sea, frustration crashing against the shores of my restraint. Evie’s being bartered off like chattel to cancel her father’s debts? I knew that fucker was ruthless, but I never thought he’d stoop this low.

I squeeze her knee. “Your father can’t do that.” But he probably can. As bad as this is, I’ve seen worse. Men like Randall Doyle will do whatever it takes to cover their own asses. Even sacrifice the people they’re supposed to be protecting.

“He can, Tristan.” She’s breathing choppily, like she’s on the brink of hyperventilating. “I tried to talk him out of it, but he just got madder and madder. I live on his property … I have nowhere else to go. And even if I did leave, he’d find me. This is a small town—he knows everyone, and so do the Deschamps.” She looks up at me, her bright eyes wet and panicked.

“Is this why you avoided my calls today?” I shift to look at her, struggling to keep my voice even. “You should’ve told me right away.” Evie marrying Cole would be a disaster. Not only would it completely fuck our plans to take over Doyle’s distillery, but it would also bind Evie to someone she hates.

“Why, so you could counterattack?” Her eyes narrow, even as tears spill from them. “I wasn’t thinking about you, okay? I have enough shit to deal with on my own.”

She’s not totally wrong, but she doesn’t realize how much I actually care. About her, not just the distillery. “You’re not marrying that asshole, okay?”

Evie’s lower lip trembles. “Once my father makes a deal, there’s no going back.”

“He doesn’t own you,” I snap. “You’re a person, not property. And that distillery is mine.”

“But—”

“Don’t underestimate me. You have no idea what I’m willing to do,” I say softly, gripping her chin. “What I want to know is, what are you willing to do?”

She blinks as my hand slides away. “Anything,” she whispers.

“We’ve known each other for a long time, Evie, and despite all of this bullshit, you do know me,” I say. “Do you trust me?”

It takes a long time, but eventually she gives me a single nod.

“Then marry me instead.”

“They’re not home,” he says. He looks down like a kid who’s been told that their friend can’t come out to play. “Maybe I really do need a wife,” he jokes.

At least I think it’s a joke, but when I look at him, he’s not grinning like he usually does. He looks away as if he’s deep in thought.

“Women have enough problems without one of us taking you on as a husband. You do you know you have to keep your pants zipped if you’re married, right?” I ask, horrified at the idea of him marrying a poor unsuspecting woman.

“You’re awfully concerned about what goes on in my pants.” He grins. “I wonder why that is?” He puts his hands on his hips and gyrates.

“In your dreams. Nobody likes community di—” I stop when Aiden clears his throat and gestures at Jasmine.

“Not in front of my goddaughter,” he admonishes.

“Are you under the impression that you’re a woman? I bet you look like Barbie down there.” He gestures at my crotch, and I gasp in disgust. “Don’t worry. You’re safe from me. I don’t’ like plastic.”

“The nerve,” I begin.

Short-Story: Heartless Vow

Giovanni knows the rules that bound their world and follows them to the letter—the five original crime families can never fraternize. Her feelings for him don’t matter.

But rules were meant to be broken. When Vittoria receives the news that would turn her life upside down, she decides to send it all to hell and claim the Lion for herself.

Book Two:

Maxim wants me. He doesn’t even care that our families are mortal enemies, or that I’ve never seen his face.

With a loud thud, the door exploded open. Jeez. Even though he was still wrapped in bandages, Maxim looked as menacing as a raging bull.

“Don’t come near me.” I put up both hands, then kicked myself for not procuring a weapon when I had the time. The bedside lamp would’ve been a good choice. “You’re sorely mistaken if you think I’m going to stand back while you hurt me and my family.”

His gaze swept up and down my body. “I didn’t think you would.” He winced, then strode past me toward the bed.

As if Anatoli could read minds, he rushed into the suite while panting, as if he’d ran up the stairs. He met my gaze then turned his attention toward Maxim. When he realized there were no casualties, he relaxed his stance.

“You’re bleeding, Maxim. Let me look.” He gestured for Maxim to sit.

Maxim raised his hand and stopped Anatoli in his tracks. “No. Let my wife tend to my wounds.”

“Ooo-kay.” Anatoli looked as confused as I was.

“Leave us.” Maxim braced his good arm on his knees and released a breath.

“Everything you need is in the bathroom,” Anatoli said to me then turned to leave. He paused when he spotted the unhinged door. “I’ll get someone to fix that.”

“Thanks.” I smiled at him.

The wife in me wanted to tell my husband to go to hell. But the doctor in me was already thinking of all the things that could go wrong if I didn’t check on Maxim. He was tired because his body was working overtime, trying to heal itself. But also, because he just cracked open a heavy wooden door with his foot.

Cursing under my breath, I strode to the bathroom and got all the essentials to wash out his wounds. When I returned, Maxim hadn’t moved an inch.

“We should rinse your wounds twice a day, then cover them. They’ll heal faster that way.” I approached him tentatively, the way one would do with a wild animal because that was exactly what he was. My gaze swept from the splint and stained gauze to the blood seeping through his white dress shirt in two different places. “I need to take a look first.”

He nodded. With a sigh, he undid all the buttons, then sat back to let me help him with it. I pulled the fabric up then pushed it over his shoulders. The soft hair on his chest bristled the skin on my arms and chest. To my surprise, the gentle exchange eased my nerves.

“Getting out of bed today was a bad idea.” I picked at the gauze and removed it.

“I had things to attend to.”

“Right. You had that illegal wedding to go to.” I shot back.

“Yes.” He chuckled. “I did.”

“This shouldn’t hurt. It’s just water.” I squeezed the squirt bottle and rinsed his entire shoulder.

Even if fear wasn’t a big part of the equation anymore, I still couldn’t get myself to look at him. Not even when he cocked his head to look at me. His hot breath left a warm trail that ran from my cheek all the way down to my hip. He gripped his thigh with long fingers as his inspection of me continued.

“Little late for that, don’t you think?” I sneered.

“What’s that?”

“Buyer’s remorse.”

“I didn’t pay for you.” He took a lock of my hair. “Your hair is shorter.”

“I cut it after…” I’d cut it shortly after Luca left, but Maxim didn’t need to know that. I swallowed and bit my tongue for offering him intimate details of my life. “You were spying on me.”

“Not for long.” He squeezed his eyes shut. “Your scent reminds me of something. But I can’t remember what.”

“Probably your dungeon. I’ve showered six times since I left and I can’t seem to scrub the stench off me.” I shuffled back. “I need you to get up to get the other two sutures.”

Slowly, as if he were trying not to scream in pain, he rose to his feet. When I stepped into his circle, he bent down to whisper in my ear, “You smell fine to me.”

I shut the door behind me with shaky hands. Now that I was here, my anger had subsided, and I couldn’t remember what had possessed me to come and argue with Luca Gallo about my grade. Slowly, I lifted my gaze and wiped my palms on my skirt. I had expected him to be glowering at me as he liked to do. But instead, he was focused on the papers in front of him.

Had I misheard him? Maybe he hadn’t been talking to me when he said the word enter. Fuck, did I just barge in on him in his own office…again?

Fuck. Fuck.

I held my breath as he fixed the top two buttons on my blouse.

“Are you here to give me a recount of all the grades I’ve handed out today.”

“It’s a date,” he confirmed, his eyes crinkling at the corners. God, he was adorable. And sexy as hell. And interested in me.

Our date. The words sent a giddy thrill through me as we resumed walking. This was really happening. I was going on a date with Lewis.

If only teenage me could see me now…

The giddy combination made me bold.

“One condition though.”

His brow furrowed. “Anything.”

I bit my lip, looking up at him through my lashes. “You let me make it up to you. For this morning.”

His pupils dilated, his fingers tightening on mine. “Yeah?” He rasped, his voice gone gravelly. “And how do you plan on doing that?”

I pushed up on my toes, bringing my mouth to his ear, my breasts brushing his chest. I heard his sharp intake of breath and grinned. “Thought I’d leave that up to your imagination…”

He groaned, his other hand coming to my hip, tugging me flush against him. “Keep that up and we won’t make it to dinner,” he warned darkly.
