After two miles of running in silence, void of all our usual small talk and bullshit, Simon slows us to a slow jog. “Azalea?”

He never was one to beat around the bush, and he’s certainly never hesitated on calling me on my shit. “Yeah, Azalea.”

“Y’all ever gonna get together?”

I scrub a hand over my face. “Us getting together ain’t the problem. It’s staying together. She’s got it stuck in her pretty little head that I don’t want strings.” He shows no reaction to the fact that I just shared that Azalea and I have been sleeping together. Odd. Shaking my head, I grunt in annoyance. “Girl’s got it wrong. I want more than strings. I want chains.”

“Hmm.”

Here we go. “Hmm what, Simon?”

“Well, and this is just a thought, but have you ever actually told her you want more?”

“I mean, I guess?”

“You don’t sound so sure. You either have or you haven’t.”

“I’ve told her we were a long time coming and that I’ve always wanted her, and just today, I told her how good we are together. So, yeah, I’ve told her.” My voice comes out strong and confident. Too bad Simon’s about to crush that confidence like a tin can.

“You’re an idiot. That’s not telling her how you feel. That’s telling her you like the way she makes you feel, if you catch my drift.” Judging from the confused look on my face, Simon can see, clearly, that I’m not catching his drift. “Dude, you basically made it sound like you enjoy fucking her.”

Is he right? I mean, I do, but . . . “Aw, hell.” Yeah, he’s totally right. “I’m such an asshole.”

Knots.

I’ve been tied up in knots since Drake left the salon. That infuriating, insufferable man. He thinks he can bust up into my business, rile me up and leave me all hot and wanting? Well, he has another thing coming. I’ll make damn sure of that.

“Seraphine!” I yell, storming from my station to the front desk. “We’re going out tonight!”

“We are?” she questions, her eyes are glinting with humor. She knows exactly what’s got me all wound up.

“We sure are. Dress hot and be ready to dance. I’ll pick you up at eight. And, if you happen to slip up and mention our plans to the guys, then so be it.”

“If I happen to slip up, you say?” She’s full on laughing at me now, but I don’t even care. Drake Collins needs to learn that I’m the one in charge.

“Go ahead and laugh, Seraphine, but by the end of the night that man will be regretting coming in here and actin’ a fool.” I tell her, stomping my foot for emphasis. “I’m the boss. Not him. Me! He can’t just swing his sexy at me and expect me to fall all over him like some love-struck googly-eyed girl.”

“Can’t he though?” Seraphine asks, tapping her long, manicured nails on the desktop.

“I mean, ugh. Yes, physically he can. That man is catnip to my libido, but he doesn’t need to know that—”

“Hun, I’m ninety-nine percent positive he already knows it.”

“So not the point. I need to flip this around. Stay on top of him…” Seraphine quirks a brow at me, and I can’t help but giggle. “The situation with him, not him-him.”

“Why’re you so against being with him, Az?”

“Because we want totally different things from each other. He wants no-strings fun, and I want to settle down one day. I’ve loved Drake since before I was old enough to even understand the feelings he stirred in me, and unfortunately, the only thing I stir in him is lust. So, I need to stay on top of this shit. It’d be so easy to give in and then I’d just end up with a hurt heart. No thanks.”

“And you think going out, dressed sexy, and putting on a show for him is the way to stay on top of the ‘situation’?” Seraphine asks using air-quotes.

Pausing, I ponder her words. Maybe she’s right. Maybe this isn’t the way to guard my heart, but he deserves the payback. “Yup, totally. See ya at eight.”

She grasps my hand, and like an instant replay from dinner, her body slides down mine. The contact is somehow more intimate than it was earlier, making her cheeks turn a pretty shade of pink, only noticeable due to the moonlight peeking between the branches of the oak tree in her yard.

“Okay, Cash.” Her voice is nothing more than a rasp.

We make it to the porch, and the inner battle begins. Is she expecting a kiss, or will she slap me for trying, what with how our last kiss ended? I war with myself a little longer before settling on a hug. A nice, safe hug.

“Well, goodnight then,” she whispers, looking down as I start to pull away.

Is that disappointment I hear in her voice? Well, hell. I can’t have that.

Keeping my right arm around her waist, I bring my left hand to her cheek, placing my thumb just below her jaw. Using that position, I pull her closer to me.

“It was a good night indeed, Myla Rose,” I murmur just before I press my lips to hers.

Her lips are soft, so damn soft, even more so than I remember. I nip at her bottom lip, causing her lips to part. I use that small opening to deepen the kiss, and Myla Rose digs her nails into the base of my neck.

Slipping my hand from her waist and down over the curve of her hip, I hike her dress up and settle it on the smooth bare skin just under her ass, pulling her closer—closer—closer. Trailing my fingertips across her cheek and through her hair, I tug on it just a little, just like I’d imagined doing at the start of our night.

Damn, she likes that. It’s like I flipped a switch. She’s no longer kissing me—she’s devouring me.

I hoist her up, and she wraps her legs around my waist. The front door is the only thing keeping us upright. I press my hips into hers, showing her just how much I want her before pulling her hair again. She throws her head back, hitting it on the door with a loud thump.

That breaks the spell. She lowers her legs and untangles herself from me, and I step back, unsure of what comes next. Is she going to ask me in or send me on my way?

“Do . . . do you want to come in?” She looks up at me expectantly.

“Lead the way, darlin’,” I rasp out—because really, is there any other response?
