Alexander (Xander) Livingston left college with the dream of becoming CEO of his uncle’s technology company. Eleven years later, all his dreams have come true. All except for one: marrying the love of his life.

Madison (Maddie) Hightower had always been a loner until Xander came along. Devastated after he left her behind to chase his dreams, she focused all her energy on becoming president of a digital software company – the same business Xander has just acquired. Even after all these years, her attraction for Xander is still sizzling and palpable. He still makes her heart sing, but she isn’t sure if he feels the same way.

Xander is interested in the merger for two reasons. The first is the potential for growth in the digital market, and the second is a chance to reconnect with Maddie. He’s never forgotten her. She was supposed to be by his side as he climbed the corporate ladder, and now he has the opportunity to have Maddie working under him. Literally.

But Maddie has a secret. One she never told Xander when he left her in California and headed to the East Coast— a secret she never thought he’d ever uncover.

The merger of their companies will bring Xander face to face with Maddie’s life-altering betrayal. How he handles this discovery will decide the fates of these two star-crossed lovers.

EXCERPT REVEAL:

Sweat dripped from my forehead as I dropped the ball in the service zone and whacked it hard against the front wall. We were three games into our racquetball cutthroat match as we started the fourth. Hollis, Lucas, and I had each won a game, and now the winner of this round claimed bragging rights as King of the Court. Today was just what I needed to take my mind off Maddie; only, it wasn’t happening.

“You should just call her,” Lucas bellowed as he returned the serve.

The ball bounced against the sidewall and raced toward me. I slammed it back toward the front wall, barely missing the back of Hollis’s head.

“Hey, watch what you’re doing! Elodie would prefer I survive this venture and not come home with a welt on my face.”

“Whatever.” I was surprised I had even won a single game with my head being anywhere but here.

“Seriously,” Lucas said with a grunt, “you need to call her and hash it out. Either that, or stop whining about it.”

Hollis pushed me to the side, ensuring the ball stayed in play. “Look, fly out there and talk with her face to face. Trust me. I learned the hard way with Elodie to confront the problem head-on.”

I stepped left and stopped — face to face. I was about to reply when the ball smashed against my lower back, dropping me to my knees. “Fuck!”

“Oops, sorry.”

Lucas wasn’t sorry. I knew he did it on purpose. He and Hollis had been tossing advice my way all morning long, and I didn’t want anything to do with it.

“You okay?” Hollis held out his hand to help me right myself.

I reached my arm around to rub the sting away from where the ball had slammed into me. “I’ll be fine.”

Lucas stood in the serve zone and bounced the ball once, then caught it in midair. “You know, Hollis is probably right. You should do this face to face.”

Knocking the ball around was supposed to help me not think for a while, but instead, it’s done anything but help me forget. “Can we please talk about something else for a while.”

Lucas served, and Hollis rallied. “Hey, get a load of this.” Grunt. “I saw a license plate this week that said VGN4LIF.”

The ball flew past me. “Virgin for life?”

Hollis returned the ball. “Or Vegan for life.”

Lucas lobbed it against the right wall before it ricocheted off the front wall. “Either way, there’s no meat.”

His response had me laughing so hard, I swung and missed the ball completely. The three of us stood in the center of the court, chuckling uncontrollably.

“Seriously,” Hollis spoke, “I think you need to confront Maddison in person. She’s got a good head on her shoulders, and she’s going to be an asset to Livingston. I was impressed by her the other night.”

Lucas was bent over with his hands on his knees. “Yeah, talk it out with her, or call one of your bimbos and fuck her out of your system. Now, serve.”

I glanced at Hollis. Holding my hand out as our eyes met, and I mouthed the word ball. He tossed the ball into my hand, and I bounced it once, then smacked it hard. Not hard enough to injure Lucas, but hard enough to drop him to the floor.

“Payback’s a bitch, motherfucker.”

Nicco!”
Arianne clambered off the bed and rushed to my side.
“Wait.” I
held up my other hand to stop her. A dark angry storm was raging through me. I
wanted to hit something, to hurt and bleed.
I needed
it.
Dark
rivulets of blood seeped over my hand, but I barely felt it. I was too wired.
Too hungry for the kill.
“Let me
take a look at it.” Arianne stepped forward and I jerked back, like a caged
animal being riled.
“Nicco,
it’s me. It’s only me.” She had me cornered with no way out. My body trembled
violently as I desperately tried to hold on to my frayed rope of control.
“Nicco…”
Arianne brushed the hair from my face. My head hung low, my shoulders hunched
and tight. I wanted to kill him. I wanted to hunt him down and kill him with my
bare hands.
“Come back
to me.” She gently lifted my busted hand and inspected the damage. “It needs
cleaning. Let me see what there is.” Arianne left me and went into the
bathroom. When she came back, she had a small first aid kit. “I found it in the
cabinet. Sit.” Her gaze went to the bed, but I remained rigid.
“I need to
stand.”
“Okay. Hold
still.” She worked in silence, cleaning me up and bandaging my hand. My pulse
began to slow, the tightness in my chest easing.
It was her.
Her touch,
her calmness.
“I’m
sorry,” I choked out.
Arianne
took my face in her hands and looked right at me. God, I wanted to drown in the
dark pools of honey. “Talk to me.”
“I want to
kill him… I should have killed him.”
“So why
didn’t you?”
It was the
last thing I expected her to say, but I knew this wasn’t about her, it was
about me.
“It’s not
that simple,” I released a heavy sigh. “If I’d have killed him… it would
start something we might not be able to finish. I can’t do that to the Family,
to you.”
She nodded,
dropping one of her hands to mine and lacing them together. “I hate Scott
for what he did to me. I hate him so much that sometimes I wish you had done
it.” Arianne took a shuddering breath. “But I want a life with you. I want a
future. I can’t have that if you’re behind bars… or worse.”
“If he
hurts you again, I can’t promise I won’t do it.”
Something
flashed in her eyes, but before I could decipher it, Arianne kissed me. “I
don’t want to talk any more, Nicco. I want you to love me. I want you to make
me forget about the monsters.”

Excerpt
Every minute that
ticks by, butterflies tickle the inside of my rib cage as I wait for Devious to
waltz through the bedroom. I don’t think I’ll ever get used to being married.
I’ve never slept in a bed with a man. When I would visit Atrocious, I’d sleep
in his guestroom.
The cotton sheets
stick to my exposed skin, and I turn on my side. I have on my tank top and
pajama pants. Nothing fancy because I’m not going to have sex with Devious, and
I’m going to let him know up front.
My pulse jumps as
Devious strolls through the room. He’s no longer sporting the tux he wore at
the wedding, but black t-shirt and gray sweatpants. Those sweatpants should be
banned from the male species as it shows off the outline of his dick. My cheeks
flush and my legs shake. He’s stupid beautiful. It makes me sick to be sexually
attracted to him.
He slides under the
black blanket, faces me, and stares into my eyes. Silence falls between us, and
the only thing I hear is the air conditioner pumping out cold air.
“We can’t have sex,”
I tell him. “I’m sick.”
“Sick how?”
“Uh. My stomach
hurts, and I spoke with the doctor. She said I can’t have sex for a while
because I have a type of illness that won’t allow me to have a baby.”
He tilts his head to
the side, a frown paints his face. He stands up from the bed. “What’s the name
of the illness?”
“I don’t know.”
“How long have you
had it?” The lines around his mouth crinkles.
“Um… three years.”
“You need to be
punished for lying.”
I freeze, and my
eyes widen. “What?”
“Pull down your
panties, lie down with your ass in the air.”
I’m not lying!” I
sit up on my knees.
“How fucking stupid
do you think I am?” He folds his hand across his chest. “If you really were
sick, you would know the name of your illness.”
I shift my gaze from
him.
“Pull down your
pants. Now, Roselyn Vitali.” He grits his teeth. “I’m tired of your
disrespect.”
“How am I being
disrespectful?”
“Let me refresh your
memory.” He rubs his thumb on his chin. “When you tried to get me upset at
breakfast by saying you’re going to the club to lose your virginity to someone
else. That’s you being spiteful because I made you wear a necklace. Then you
were being very disrespectful towards my brother and almost cost me a three
million dollar deal. That’s you being childish and mean. And you lied to me
about being sick. That’s you wanting to take control of the situation.
Apparently, you don’t respect me. “
My palms are sweaty,
and I chew on my tongue.
Apparently, he’s
been watching my behavior because all of it is true. I sit up on my knees,
straighten my back as heat creeps up on the back of my neck. I knew the real
Devious was going to come out sooner or later.
“Pull down yo—”
“Devious, I’m
so—”
“No, you’re not.
You’re only sorry because you got caught. You need to learn to respect me. If I
force you to do it, you won’t like it.”
With trembling
hands, I pull down my pants, bending down on the bed with my ass in the air,
giving him a direct view of my vagina. His large frame hovers over me, and my
pulse jumps. His hand smacks across my delicate flesh, and I grit my teeth as I
keep the tears at bay. Devious is already trying to break my spirit, but I
won’t let him.
I get up and pull my
pants over my hips. “Don’t put your hands on me ever again.” I stick my hand in
pants, digging my nails into my thigh. The pain of him slapping my ass arouses
me in places I don’t want. Humiliation dampens my cheeks.
“You will obey me.
You will show me respect or be prepared to be punished.”
From the corner of
my eye, I watch him go to the mini bar next to the walk-in closet.
“If you didn’t want
to have sex, then you could have said so. I have zero tolerance for liars,” he
murmurs.
The sound of the
amble liquid pours into the crystal glass fills the air. Tears stream down my
face, and he waltzes over, using his callous thumb to wipe the tears from under
my eyes. His touch is gentle and warm. And the odd thing is, I want him to
touch me everywhere. I turn my head away from his touch, but he grips my chin.
His violet eyes meet mine. “Just because I’m kind to you doesn’t mean you can
take advantage of me. I plan to be the best husband I can be, but take my
kindness for weakness, and I’ll be the cruelest person you’ll ever meet.” He
sips his bourbon as his eyes still bore into mines.
My throat bobs as I
swallow hard. His words chill to the bone. “I’m not going to take your shit,
Cayden.”
He chuckles. “I
control thousands of men across the U.S. I’m sure I can tame a
nineteen-year-old naïve girl.”
“Good luck.”
The bastard has the
audacity to smirk at me. He rubs his thumb on my bottom lip, and I’m tempted to
nip it just to see him squirm. “You’re going to make this marriage interesting,
and I’m going to enjoy every minute of it.”

Sacred Bond eBook

From the outside, Stone Ridge appeared to be a small, welcoming town in Montana with sweet shops and friendly faces. Yet no one knew the true powers it held, the ancient secrets that were hidden, or the pain that had unfolded when the ancestors were met with a force so great it left them all in shambles.

The key to resurfacing the powers of the land fell into the hands of Merick. But in order to do so, he would need to build an army. One big enough to withstand those that threatened him and all that he stood for.

Taryn left the big city life looking for a change, a chance to discover herself. Little did she know, her life would unravel in more ways than she could’ve ever imagined. And all because of one man.

The dark-haired stranger. The one that felt so familiar, yet she had no idea why. They’d never met before…or had they?

Whenever he was near she felt a strong connection, one that could not be denied. That feeling of déjà vu. Like she’s lived that moment before, seen those eyes, heard that voice. Even his touch felt electric.

A Sacred Bond had formed.

Turns out, Taryn was the key to it all. She was written in Merick’s destiny, long before their time.

EXCERPT REVEAL:

I walk up the front steps to her small cabin and pause near the door. Leaning in, I listen quietly for any sounds on the other side. The sun has begun to set and the yellow-orange glow illuminates everything in its path. The reflection on the windows makes it hard to see inside but I know she is here, I can feel her. I can always feel her.

Lifting my hand, I knock against the thick wooden door and then place my palm flat against it. I’ve never wanted to touch anything or anymore more than I want to touch Taryn. To feel the warmth of her skin, to taste her lips, I crave her to the point of possessiveness.

“Taryn,” the sound of her name inflicts a desire in me that is hard to control. “Please,” my heart pounds, the heat of my body rises. “I would never hurt you, you have to believe me. I need you,” I rest my forehead to the door and close my eyes. “I’ve loved you from the first moment I saw you, and each day since I’ve been unable to stop myself from falling in love with you more.”

I hear a shuffle on the other side of the door, so I pause, listening for a sign that she is there. Then I feel it, that closeness, the completion I’ve felt every single time she’s near, even if I can’t see her.

Quinn
Summer was in full swing, and the weather was cooperating. High nineties, humid, and stifling, with no rain in sight. By the time the party of the century kicked off later that night, the weather would be cooler.
I couldn’t believe Daddy had agreed to let me throw the biggest bash Ashford had ever seen. Take that, Tessa Stevens.
Nevertheless, I was a ball of nerves. I wanted the party to be perfect, and so far, it was stacking up to be. Jack James, a junior at Kensington High, who was one of the best DJs in Ashford, was in charge of the music that night, thanks in part to Emma Maxwell. She and Jack were friends, although I suspected they were more than friends by the way Emma blushed when she talked about him. At the very least, she liked him.
Plus, about forty or so kids were coming that we knew of. Momma wanted to keep the guest list small, but we were teenagers, and I couldn’t promise we wouldn’t have more than forty, especially when word got out.
Celia skipped alongside me like she was seven again, her breasts bouncing along with her ponytail. “I can’t believe your dad is letting you have a party.” She skidded to a halt in the dirt outside the barn, sending a cloud of dust billowing around us.
I couldn’t believe it either. Daddy hated parties. He felt they brought trouble.
I grabbed a hammer from the toolbox at the base of the ladder. “I promised him nothing would happen.”
She snorted. “He bought that?” She knew my dad well.
With the hammer, two nails, and the welcome banner, I climbed the ladder. “You don’t think anything will go wrong?” I asked myself more than her. I knew firsthand that fights happened at parties involving high school kids. After all, Tessa Stevens and I had gotten into a fight at her Christmas party a couple of years prior. But Tessa and I weren’t enemies anymore, although we weren’t best friends either. Still, I didn’t have anyone else who hated me, at least not that I knew of.
Celia held the ladder. “Nah. Unless you invited Marcus and Sloane.”
I tacked the banner over the barn door. “Of course not.” Marcus wasn’t a senior, but Sloane was. We were not friends. Rumor was that she was moving, so I didn’t have anything to worry about.
“Then you’re fine.”
I climbed down. “Yeah. The party will be a success.” I wanted kids to remember this night, and not for fights, but for the great time they had.
She smiled, her white teeth standing out beneath her tanned skin. “Heck yeah, it will.”
We’d been spending time at the Maxwell lake, floating in rafts, swimming, and having a great time since school let out last month. Even my skin was tanned.
I tossed the hammer in the toolbox at the foot of the ladder. “We should set up the tables inside.”
The party hall was one of our old barns that we didn’t use much except for storage when Daddy had an oversupply of hay or other farm items. As of late, the barn was empty, though. Daddy was about to turn the building into a workshop where he could tinker on cars and farm equipment, something he and my brother Carter loved to do. He’d even promised Carter that he would have it ready for him when my brother graduated college. I believed it was Daddy’s way of luring Carter back home. I didn’t think Daddy had to do much coaxing. Carter was a homebody, and if anyone loved working on the farm, it was my older brother.
“Wait. I have something to tell you.” Celia’s light and airy mood had vanished.
“Everything okay?”
“Liam and I broke up.”
My jaw came unhinged. “What? When?”
She lifted her small shoulders. “It’s no big deal. We called it quits last week.”
I angled my head at my BFF. “You sound sad but don’t look it.”
She sighed, her espresso eyes glinting in the sunlight. “I was afraid to tell you.”
“Why?”
“He’s your brother. But it was a mutual decision. He’s going off to college. I’ll be here. We felt it was a good time. And he wants to play the field. I do too.” Not an ounce of sadness tinged her voice.
“Do you still love my brother?” Celia had been drooling over Liam since she was a little girl.
“It’s not the kind of love you have for Maiken.” She grasped my hand. “I don’t want you to worry about Liam and me. We’re cool. And if, in the future, an opportunity presents itself for us to reunite, then Liam and I will cross that bridge then.”
“You sound old. Are you sure you’re my best friend?”
She giggled. “I know what I want, Quinn. I don’t want to be tied down. I want to date who I want. So does Liam. I also want to explore more of me. I’m excited about filling out college applications. I’m excited about our senior year, making new memories, trying new things for the first time, and I’m excited about being the school’s sports reporter. So many possibilities.”
I shared her excitement on most of what she’d said, except I wouldn’t be breaking up with Maiken. “What new things do you have in mind?”
She tucked her bra strap under the sleeve of her tank top. “I don’t know yet. I’ve never tried liquor. Maybe I’ll start there.”
I reared back as my mind grappled with her statement. Liquor wasn’t the first thing that came to mind when I thought of trying something new for the first time. I was thinking more along the lines of officially becoming a woman. Maiken and I had yet to take that plunge. We’d been dancing around the topic of sex.
“You know how that went down with Marcus at Sloane’s party last year?” Marcus had gotten so stinking drunk he’d fallen and busted up his face. That had been the beginning of a tense junior year for Maiken. His brother had ruined Maiken’s basketball season because of his drinking and acting out, causing Maiken to get hit by a car driven by Marcus’s girlfriend, Sloane.
“I didn’t say I would get drunk. I just want to try it. Maybe we should both try one alcoholic beverage tonight. We should experience that together.”
I shook my head. “Absolutely not. I have to have my wits about me. You know my parents will be up at the house and no doubt watching from a distance.”
Celia rolled her eyes. “Live a little. One drink will loosen you up too. I can see you’re already wound tight.”
I snorted. “I’ll pass.” With my luck, one drink would turn into two, and since I’d only tried a sip of beer once in my life, anything harder than that would surely mess me up.
She pouted. “You’re a downer. We’re seniors. We’re young adults. Let’s have fun.”
I trudged inside and snagged the box of balloons off one of four tables and threw it to my best friend. “I plan to have fun, just not with alcohol.”
She began blowing up balloons with Daddy’s air pump while I unpackaged the tablecloths. Aside from string lights hanging from the rafters, the decorations weren’t that elaborate. In fact, if anyone wanted to sit, they could use the bales of hay scattered along the walls.
Celia flicked through her phone. “We need music.” Within a beat, Selena Gomez’s voice filled the barn, and Celia sang along to “Lose You to Love Me.” She had a pretty voice, and sometimes I wondered why she didn’t take up singing.
“Are you sure you want to study communications?” I asked. “With your voice, you could sell records.”
“I don’t think so. My voice isn’t all that great.”
“I beg to differ.” My phone pinged, and I plucked it out of my short shorts. I beamed from ear to ear as I answered. “Maiken.”
“Hey, babe,” he drawled in that Southern accent that made the butterflies come alive in my stomach. “You ready for tonight?”
I swallowed. “Why do you sound like you’re about to give me bad news?”
Celia stopped singing and gaped.
“Sorry. No bad news. Marcus and I were arguing. That’s all.”
I bit my tongue. Marcus was the bane of the Maxwell family, the little black sheep in some ways. His rebellious nature was epic, but Marcus wasn’t my concern.
“You’re coming to my party, right?” I held my breath. I would strangle Marcus if he screwed things up for Maiken.

Catch Me When I Fall

A Falling Stars stand-alone romance from A.L. Jackson

Coming June 1st

“Royce,” she begged.
All it took was my name raking up her throat for me to completely lose it. No control left.
Fuck it.
Only thing that mattered was getting closer.
I lifted her from the ground, one arm around the small of her back and the other wrapped up in her hair. I pulled her to my hungry mouth, kissing her wild, lips and tongues and teeth.
Cherry coated her sweet tongue, and need thrummed her heart into a fury.
“You were right, what you said. You were right,” she whispered frantically. “I want you to take away the pain. Take it . . . just for a little while. Just for tonight.”
Fuck.
I was a bastard.
A monster.
But I couldn’t stop.
I let my lips travel over her jaw and tumble down her throat, both my hands holding her by the face. The girl’s head rocked back on the wall where we were right out in the open, gasping and panting for air as I devoured her sweet flesh.
The girl completely surrendered.
Shit.
This was bad. So bad.
I ripped myself back, which was a goddamn travesty in itself. “We have to get out of here. Right fucking now.”

Brittany

He watched me from afar for over a year.
Everywhere I went, he was there. His eyes on me.
Little by little, he got closer. He stalked his prey…and that prey was me.
But I wanted to be caught.
I wanted to be his.
I wanted him just as much as he wanted me.
So I gave into him.
I was his.

Derek

She was mine.
She had been from the second her eyes connected with mine from across the room.
I waited. I watched and when she was ready, she became mine.
She owned all of me, heart and soul, and I owned every single piece of her.
Problem was, someone else decided they wanted her too.
But nobody threatens her and lives to tell the story.

EXCERPT REVEAL:

Derek is standing outside the truck, cupping my face in his hands. “I don’t want to see a single ounce of sadness on your face.” He looks down at the ground, his jaw clenched. “You are the best thing that ever happened to me, baby. You are my reason for breathing, you were made for me. You are the other part of my soul, and without you I would not be complete.”

He kisses me so softly, so sweetly, that my toes curl and I close my eyes as he rests his forehead against mine. We just breathe each other, take in this moment.

“I love you so fucking much, angel, it hurts me. It hurts me to go an hour without seeing you.” He leans back, cupping my neck with his hand. “I am obsessed with you. You are my every thought.”

I can’t stop the tears no matter how hard I try, and he kisses my hand, right on my ring finger. “You are to be my wife, the mother of my kids, baby. You are the best thing on this fucking earth. Those people in there are nothing, baby.”

He smiles at me. “You are an angel on earth, baby, and I am the fucking devil.” He clenches his hand on my throat. “Together we fit perfectly.”

“You are mine forever, baby, forever and ever.”

I smile, putting my hand on top of his on my throat. “Yours always.”

Blurb:

I never believed in love at first sight…

Until the ATM ate my debit card,

And Jackson Boudreaux stepped in to save the day.

All business, in his nine to five banker suit–

I couldn’t help but wonder of what he was hiding under that perfect form.

I was leather and handcuffs.

He was ties and cuff-links,

But it didn’t matter that we were from two different worlds.

Once we collided there was no going back.

Neither of us were ready for love…

He came with baggage and drama not to mention a young son.

I avoided drama like the plague and avoided little kids even more.

EXCERPT:

I pulled into the parking lot of Walmart and headed to the bakery. After grabbing a few packs of chocolate cupcakes with chocolate fudge icing, I made my way up front to check out.

“Why in the hell are there twenty-five lanes and only two are open? Of course, none are ten items or less and none are self check-out. What the hell, people?”
“Tell me about it,” a lady behind me agreed as she whipped her cart with what had to be fifty items around me and got in line.
“Really? Was I not standing here?”
“You were, but the line is up here,” the woman said sarcastically.
“I hope that I pull you over someday.” She looked up and stared.
Yeah, figure that one out, bitch. But sometimes you have to wait for karma and sometimes you get to be karma, today was my lucky day.
“Oh, I forgot something,” asshole lady announced. “I’ll be just one second, hold my spot.”
The cashier looked at me dumbfounded. “What the hell?” I asked.
“No clue, I can’t wait for her,” the cashier named Cindy explained.
“Oh, don’t you worry, Barbie the bitch deserves this.” I moved in front of her cart and then slid her items to the back and moved her cart out of the lane.
I laid my cupcakes down and then Cindy rang them up. “Anything else for you?”
“Yes.” I moved and stood in front of the impulse-buys, you know that section full of gum and mints plus silly travel size gizmos. “I’ll take this.” I plucked a pack of Juicy Fruit gum and set in on the belt then waited until Cindy rolled it forward.
I glanced back at Bitchy Barbie who had returned with her item and was glaring at me. “Andddd… I’ll take this.” I picked up a pack of Mentos and slowly set it on the belt as well. I locked eyes with Cindy and saw that she too was enjoying this. I glanced around Barbie or whatever the bitch’s name was just to make sure that I wasn’t holding anyone else up. When I saw that I wasn’t and the bitch was furiously tapping her toe and had her arms crossed, while continuing to look down at the other lane to see if it was empty, I perused the tabloids and pretended to be trying to pick one. “Oh, don’t you think that Harry and Meghan are adorable?”
“No, I don’t. What’s adorable is for you to stop goofing off and check out, I’ve got places to be,” Barbie snapped.
“And I would have liked someone not to cut me off and then leave their cart blocking me so I still couldn’t check out while they went and hunted the item”—I glanced down at the two things she held—“sorry, items she had forgotten. Now that we understand each other, I’m ready to check out.” I turned to Cindy. “So, Cindy, how was your day?”
“Day sucked but my evening has been entertaining as all get out.” She smiled brightly.
I grabbed my bag with cupcakes, gum, and mints and headed out. Sure I was still in somewhat of a grumpy mood but there was a lot of shit going on. First, what was up with fucking Walmart not opening more lanes? Oh, and bitchy Barbie? She was just that cherry on top to a spiraling out of control kind of day. Because let’s not forget, that just for shits and giggles my mother was accosted.
Before I straddled my bike, I shoved an entire cupcake into my mouth. By the time I pulled into my parents’ driveway, I felt better. There were two fewer cupcakes, but my mood had been soothed.About the author:

Blurb:

How easily can an open heart unlock the door to happily-ever-after?

When Miss Quinn Cooper arrives in Emerson Pass, Colorado, her entire life is packed into one small suitcase. Her widowed mother and baby sister are depending upon her for their survival back home in Boston. And the self-appointed mayor of the rugged mountain community is counting on Miss Cooper to prove herself a fitful teacher for the young and old alike.

Lord Alexander Barnes is determined to bring a bit of English civility to the wild terrain of Emerson Pass. Using his own resources, the widower and father of five builds a schoolhouse and recruits a young teacher from the east to provide an education for both the adults and the children in his rapidly growing mining town. But when the lovely, and much younger than anticipated, Miss Cooper arrives in town, Lord Barnes finds himself providing more than just employment when the boarding house proves to be an unsafe accommodation for the school mistress.

As Miss Cooper takes a room in the Barnes’ home, the five Barnes children are delighted. They are sure Miss Cooper is the perfect woman for their lonely father. But when a friend of the Englishman turns up dead, the hope for progress in the untamed town seems immediately lost. Can Miss Cooper and Lord Barnes bring change to the closed-minded locals? And will their endeavor open their hearts to something more?

The first installment of USA Today bestselling author Tess Thompson’s historical romance series brings a touch of whimsy and an extra dash of mystery to Edwardian romance. Readers will fall in love with the courageous Miss Cooper and swoon for the magnanimous English Lord as they struggle to save their exciting new world at the turn of the 20th Century.

DARE YOU NOT TO SWOON FOR THESE TWO!

He lifted my chin and looked into my eyes. “Is it only the children you care for or is there room in your heart for me?”

My stomach was filled with sparrows, fluttering their wings. I plucked at the neck of my blouse; sure I was dreaming. “I feel a great many things. But you and I both know that’s all it can be between us.”

“Why?”

“Because you’re a lord and I’m a school mistress.”

“I don’t care anything about titles or circumstances. You’re beautiful and good and full of fire. How could I not fall in love with you?”

“It seems to me, Lord Barnes, that this wild country has made you wild.”

“The country hasn’t made me wild. I was born this way.” The corners of his mouth lifted into a brief smile. “This place is like me, wild and free. I listen to my own instincts, not those deemed by a society I don’t even believe in.”

He brushed his thumb across my jawline. I could hardly breathe. What would it feel like if that mouth pressed against mine?

“Do you know what my instincts are telling me to do right now?” he asked.

I shook my head as the muscles in my thighs tightened.

“They’re telling me to kiss you.”

My stomach did a full turn this time and my legs trembled. I couldn’t look away, drawn as I was to him as if an invisible force cleaved us together. I was an innocent when it came to men, but I knew the look of hunger when I saw it. This was not the appetite of an empty stomach but rather a craving only a man and woman could feel for each other. One in which there was only one single remedy. This was a tortuous beast of longing and desire.

“Have you ever been kissed, Miss Cooper?”

I nodded, dizzy. “Once.” And then he’d married my best friend and broken my heart.

“What happened to this fool who kissed you?”

“He married my friend the very next week.” Even after two years, my body remembered the shock when I’d heard the news. In an instant, I remembered the way a vast emptiness had crashed through me, leaving me in a tunnel of black in which there was no return.

“Why would he do such a thing?” Lord Barnes asked, his voice incredulous now.

“For the same reason you would,” I said. “He married someone with money. Someone from an important family.”

“I can marry whomever I please,” Lord Barnes eyes flashed with arrogance but also rebellion. “I have no one to answer to but God and my children. I’ll marry for love with no regard for anything else. What about you, Miss Cooper? Would you marry for love or money?”

“Love. Always love,” I said. “Even though I have only love to offer in return.”

“And what would make you love a man?” he asked. “If not money?”

“Kindness. Compassion. A curious mind.”

“What about a man with children?”

“I suppose it would depend on the children,” I said.

“This is a remote part of the country. Could you live here and be happy?”

“That would depend on the man.”

He smiled and ran the back of his finger over my cheek. “One worthy of your heart?”

“That’s right.”

“Would you allow me the chance to prove my worth?” he asked.

“How does one go about such a thing?” I asked.

“It starts with accepting that I care nothing about convention. I want you to be my wife.”

“Wife?” I gaped at him. Had I heard him correctly or had the lack of sleep rendered me delirious?

“Yes, Miss Cooper. I want you to be my wife and the mother to my children. If you’re willing, I’d like permission to court you. Will you deny me and break my heart?”

“Do you work for Sunshine Lives?”
He stepped into the doorway and leaned against the frame, watching me. “Yep. I’m a hybrid like you.”
Cutting him a glare, I studied him. I didn’t sense anything other than a wolf inside him. “Hybrid?”
One corner of his sexy mouth lifted while his blue eyes flashed brighter—his wolf looking out at me. “I was born to a witch and a wolf. I took my mother’s side of the gene pool. My twin is the witch.”
“A twin, huh.” I poked at the head wound. It’d heal on the surface but was still tender. At least I didn’t bleed out. Maybe that was why I hadn’t healed all the way. The healing power would have stopped the bleeding and focus on the more critical injuries.
Reid moved farther inside the bathroom, making the already small space seem smaller. “Thomas sent me to find you and your sister. Where is Cassia?”
“She’s safe.” I stared at my reflection in the mirror, not trusting myself enough to make eye contact with the wolf next to me. My long curly blonde hair was an unruly mess and appeared tangled in places. Great, it’d take me forever to get the knots out. Unless… “I had a backpack on.”
Reid darted out of the bathroom and returned a few moments later with my pack. I took it and dropped it on the counter. “Thank you.”
“You’re welcome.”
Digging out a pair of jeans and a black tank top, I placed them beside the pack then found my toiletries. I lifted my gaze back to Reid, who watched me with intense interest. I considered telling him to leave but I still had questions. “I’m going to shower and ask you questions.”
His blue eyes sparked with desire and I fought a groan. Why in the hell did I have to meet my mate while on the run from Harrison’s crazy-ass Hunters? Because the Fates were bored. That had to be it.
He stepped closer. “We could conserve water and shower together.”
Holding up my hand, I shook my head. “Not today, wolf. And before you ask, yes, I feel the mating pull. If you haven’t noticed, I was almost killed and captured. And even though this place has wards, I don’t trust that the Hunters can’t find a way through them.”
He folded his arms over his chest. “I agree. However, we are safe for tonight. I killed the remaining Hunters when you were shot, then covered our tracks. Then I had a team come in to set a few false trails using your scent. I bought us some time. You’re welcome.”
I gaped at him. The cockiness in his tone made me want to punch him. However, the confidence in his words eased my urgency. “Who is this team?”
He removed his shirt and tossed it to the floor behind him, then leaned into me. My pulse increased and liquid desire flooded my body, making me ache in places I didn’t think could ache. A low chuckle escaped him as he stepped back. I watched how his muscles flexed and rolled as he bent to turn the shower on.
“What are you doing?”
He straightened and wicked smile lifted the corners of his lips. “Turning on the shower.”
Smart ass.
When he unbuttoned his pants and pushed them down over his hips and farther, I gasped and shook my head. “I didn’t say you could shower with me.”
“But your scent betrays you.” He chuckled and tested the water.
The scent of his arousal filled the bathroom and I glanced down at his boxer briefs. His erection was impressive and my pussy ached. I groaned in frustration. I didn’t need a mate!
Damn wolf.
