Caught between what should’ve been and everyone’s idea of who I should be, I had to find myself again. That was easier said than done with an interfering, overbearing family like mine.

I told myself I was done rescuing my irresponsible sister, but I didn’t expect flying across an ocean to help her one last time would lead to my own saving.

It was when I surrendered to desire and released my past that love taught me just what could come from letting go.

“Why do you want to be with me?” Tracing my fingertips against his jaw, they tickled with his frantic pulse beneath my touch as I lowered my palms to his bare chest. Rhys took his hands from cupping my jaw, his eyes bright, gazing at me like I’d frozen before him.

“Why wouldn’t I want to?” He replied, tugging his thumb against my bottom lip. “You deserve to be in control, Mia. I asked to kiss you. I didn’t ask for permission for more. I need you to tell me what you want because, right now, I’m yours and I’ll do anything you want me to do.”

I let myself fall against him, cocooned in the warmth of his powerful arms around my bare back.

Breathing his addictive scent, my reply slipped. “I want you.”

Weakened beneath the pressure of his chest against mine, I thought of his words. Control. I wanted it but, in the same breath, I knew I was losing it. Maybe that’s what control was, the awareness and acceptance of what we desired and being mature enough to handle whatever happened next.

But I couldn’t think beyond that moment. Rhys’s fingers knotted in my hair, giving him strength to move my mouth wherever it needed to meet his. Our tongues intertwined, addicted already.

EXCERPT

It was too chilly for a walk, but I needed the fresh air to catch my breath and attempt to clear my mind.

What in the name of God had happened in the last hour? One minute Pinch and I were arguing about his refusal to show me photos of who I now knew was Tommy Sholes, and the next, he’d looked as though he wanted to kiss me.
I stopped under a tree and covered my face with my hands. I had to be losing my mind. There was no other explanation for it.
When I’d run away from his kiss last night, I was steadfast in knowing I was doing the right thing. I owed Darrow that much, without, at the very minimum, talking to her about it. Since Darrow was evidently unreachable at the moment, I had no intention of coming within arm’s reach of Pinch again. But, God, I wanted to know how his lips would feel, his tongue dancing with mine, his naked body beside me.
“Good God,” I groaned. It wasn’t as though I was still a girl in secondary school. I was a grown woman—an adult—who knew better than to poach my best friend’s man.
I heard the front door close and saw the man himself walking toward me. It was a sight I could linger over for hours.
I wondered if he’d ever played football; he was certainly athletic-enough looking to have. His physique lent itself to him being a target man, but that wasn’t all that made my mouth water. His self-assurance added exponentially to his allure. And those eyes. I could get lost in them for days.
“You look as though you’re fixing to eat me alive, Ezzie.”
I felt my cheeks flush. “In a manner of speaking.”
The last thing anyone would accuse me of, would be a prude. In fact, it was quite the opposite. Among my group of friends at university, raunchy jokes were known to be my forte. However, when I was around Pinch, I found myself blushing as much as a twenty-nine-year-old virgin. Which I wasn’t. What was it about him that made me want to behave? I shuddered at the word.
“Esland?”
I rolled my shoulders. “Um, did you reach Z or George or whomever was trying to reach you?”
“I did, and they’re on their way here. Do you want to tell me what else is going on with you?”
“Let’s see…Someone was killed in my flat. Someone who believed my parents’ death was no accident. On top of that, whoever killed him threatened to kill me too. I’m in the bloody Cotswolds where I have to ask permission to go outside, and if all of that isn’t bad enough, I spent the morning wishing I could kiss my best friend’s boyfriend.”

Carter Roy, the man that attracts all the ladies, but never gets them. He’s sexy and charming, but hasn’t found the woman that can keep his attention.
Abby
I just moved to this town six months ago, but I’m already loving it! Granted, I get lost a lot and I tend to stick out like a sore thumb. And then there’s the deputy-sheriff. He’s hot, but fighting this attraction every step of the way. I just have to find a way to make him see me through my six cats, crazy outfits, and my propensity to get into car accidents.

“Who is she?” Jack asked, bringing me out of my inner-musings.

“Who?”

“The woman you’re going all googly-eyed over.”

I waved him off. “I don’t know what you’re talking about. I’m not googly-eyed over anyone.”

“Right, you just got this far off look in your eyes that I only see when you’re dating someone new.”

“Well, then you’re wrong, because I’m not dating anyone.”

“You don’t have to be to appear that way. So, it’s someone you’ve met, but you’re not with,” he nodded to himself as he started walking around the room. “And it can’t be someone you’ve already dated, so that knocks out half the town.”

I rolled my eyes at him. He placed his hand against his chin, scratching at his jaw as he thought.

“And it can’t be someone from out of town, at least, not that far out of town, because you hardly ever leave town.”

“This is ridiculous.”

“You were just at the hospital. It’s possible you met someone there.”

I held my breath, wondering if he would guess who it was.

“But you’re not the type to fall for a damsel in distress. You’ve always liked women that could watch after themselves. Like Anna,” he grinned.

He would definitely never guess Abby then. She was the opposite of Anna in every way.

“So, it’s got to be someone new to the area, someone that you’re interested in, but since you haven’t actually asked her out, there has to be something holding you back.”

He stopped his pacing, snapping his fingers at me. “That new chick.” He snapped his fingers as he tried to come up with a name. “Abigail. Yes, that woman you hugged in the middle of the street. That’s who it is, isn’t it?”

Crap, I was so screwed. “Why would you think it’s her?”

“Oh, come on! You were hugging a woman!”

“Yeah, because she was upset.”

“And you don’t like to comfort women. That’s not your MO at all.”

“Exactly,” I said, hoping he would disprove his own theory.

“And that’s what it is about her. She’s good looking, and despite the fact that you don’t like weak women, you like her.”

“She’s not weak,” I argued, giving myself away. I closed my eyes, shaking my head as he laughed.

“Holy shit. So, what is it about her?”

“Nothing. There’s absolutely nothing about her. It’s not her.”

“It’s gotta be the whole damsel thing. The question is, what makes her different?”

“I just said it’s not her.”

“Right, which means it is.”

He rushed over to his computer and started typing.

“What are you doing?”

“Checking her background.”

“Why?” I asked, rushing over to his side.

“Because I want to know more about her.” He pulled up her name in the system, laughing at what he found. I sighed, rubbing at my eyes. “So, not only is she a damsel in distress, but she’s a very chaotic damsel, and that’s what you like about her.”

“I never said I liked her!”

“I should have known it. The moment I saw the footage of you holding her in the street, I should have known you were going to fall for her. Of course, I’m surprised it took this long. But now that I think about it, whenever we go out—”

“The people always shout,” I interrupted, hoping to throw him off, but he kept going.

“—you’re always looking around, like you’re watching for someone.”

“Bullshit. You’re seeing what you want to see.”

“No, I’m finally paying attention. So, tell me about her.”

“There’s nothing to tell,” I argued. “I don’t know anything about her.”

“You must know something,” he laughed, “otherwise you wouldn’t be so wrapped up in her.”

I walked away from him, sitting down at my desk with a huff. “I’m not wrapped up in anyone. I don’t like her. I don’t know her, and I definitely am not the man for her.”

“So you do know something about her. Because if you didn’t, you wouldn’t know if you were the right man for her or not,” he said, jabbing a finger in my direction.

“Fine, you want to know about her? She’s some kind of hippie. She has a living room filled with fluffy pillows, no furniture, and weird tea.”

He nodded, grinning at me the whole time. “Did you drink the tea?”

“Fuck off,” I said, storming out of the station, his laughter floating behind me.

I’m a stay at home mom that loves to read. Some of my favorite titles are Pride and Prejudice, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, and Horatio Hornblower. I started writing when I was trying to come up with suggestions on ways I could help bring in some extra money. I came up with the idea that I could donate plasma because you could earn an extra $500/month. My husband responded with, “No. Find something else. Write a blog. Write a book.” I didn’t think I had anything to share on blog that a thousand other mothers hadn’t already thought of. I decided to take his challenge seriously and sat down to write my first book, Jack. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed writing. From there, the stories continued to flow and I haven’t been able to stop. I hope my readers enjoy my books as much as I enjoy writing them. Between reading, writing, and taking care of three small kids, my days are quite full.

“Just like old times,” he said, plopping a baseball hat over my head. He led the way onto the field with the diamond marking, dugout, and bleachers in the distance. None of it had changed; it was exactly like it was when we were in high school.

I didn’t object as he put on a catcher’s mitt and offered me a baseball bat. He tossed the baseball up into the air and caught it without his eyes on it. I gave a disbelieving laugh and shook my head side to side. He was so utterly hopeless.

“Still the cockiest player on the field,” I muttered.

“Isn’t that why you liked me so much?”

My eyes narrowed. “You realize you just proved my point, right? Didn’t they use to call you Heavy Hitter for a reason?”

He laughed, moving closer. So close he could’ve kissed me if he wanted. “Remember your nickname? Think it started with Ball and ended with Buster?”

“Someone has to keep your huge ego in check.”

“You were always good at the job,” he said with another husky laugh. He backed away and motioned for me to get in position. “Go on. You’re up to bat, Spark. Time to hit a home run.”

“We both know I’m the worst baseball player known to man.”

“But you look so dang cute in the hat and wiggling your booty like you do when you go to swing.” He was being bold flirting like that, but then again, I liked it. “Only wish you could be in my jersey again. I liked when you used to wear it.”

I stood still for a second, the bat limp in my grasp as nostalgia hit me. “Me too.”

We let the confession hang in the air for another second before moving on. He cleared his throat and winded up. I shook out my shoulders and bent my knees, booty out just the way that distracted him. Our eyes met in an intense stare off, his stormy grays connecting with my deep browns.

“Ready?”

“Been ready.”

He held in a laugh as he pitched the ball in my direction. I swung and missed—and swore under my breath. For as crap a player as I was, I was also competitive as hell. I hated to lose. Something Dylan knew and loved about me. My grip tightened on the bat and I demanded he pitch again.

The second time I swung harder and sent the ball hurtling into foul territory. No beats were missed as I told him to pitch a third time. He followed instruction and threw the ball at me. A tenacious growl left me when I swung, prompting a laugh out of him, making my heart beat in pride.

The ball soared across the field. I kicked off my wedge sandals and split into a fast sprint, moving faster than even I expected. I’d always been a runner, on the girls’ track team during our high school days, faster than a gazelle they used to say.

Dylan was fast after me. As I dashed barefoot across the wet grass of the baseball field, he tracked me down like a lion on the hunt. We were both laughing, the melodic carefree sound ringing in the otherwise quiet night air.

Inches before he could tag me, I jumped onto home plate with triumphant arms in the air. He caught up a split second after, plucking me off my feet. I squealed as he swept me up into his arms and he spun us around in dizzying circles. My arms slid around his neck into what felt like the most natural position in the world, eyes squeezed shut, head thrown back in laughter.

I loved Dylan and Penelope’s story! I love Dylan’s bad boy past and that Penelope was the one for him. Penelope did not expect to see Dylan, definitely not as her new next door neighbor. And trying to keep her 6-year long-secret from him. Dylan seems to be willing to pick up where he and Penelope left off.

There’s a little something for everyone in this story; mystery, romance, crime, etc. And I was here for all of it. I’ve been really into cozy mysteries so adding a little mystery to this small town romance totally worked for me! Plus, who doesn’t love the town of Oak Bend, Michigan? I know I do! Where everyone seems to know each other or at least know of each other.

5 stars!

H.L. Packer is, quite frankly, a busy bee.

An avid reader as a child, her love for all things written waned into adulthood, the excitement of real life things taking over. But when her life slowed down as she finished her office job for maternity leave, her husband purchased her an e-reader, and that obsession was rekindled.

Quickly she went from reader to reviewer, and then from reviewer to blogger; street teams and promo tours galore. When she began collating her own book boxes over at Romance Readers Book Box UK and had the opportunity to include her own words and worlds, the characters began talking.

Those cheeky characters quickly found themselves written down on the page, and her first series was in progress.

When she is not coordinating her worlds, you can find her running around after her free-spirited three children, and husband, or tending to the dogs, bearded dragons, and snakes that also reside with them.

A break can be found soaking in a bubble bath or enjoying a glass of wine, often still with a book in her hand.

EXCERPT

“Thank you, everyone.” Phil rubs his hands together as he stands at the head of the table. “So, I bet you’re all really excited to know what the big secret is?” He grins at the table as twenty blank face stare back at him. “Right, well. The wait is over.” He waves his hands in front of him and a memory of a ‘Friends’ episode with jazz hands pops into my mind. Someone coughs and Phil clears his throat, loosening his tie before continuing. “So, it seems they have chosen us as the company to work on the new children’s book series, White Fire.

There’s a split-second pause as his words take effect, then excited chatter erupts around the table. Phil looks pleased with himself, a grin spreading from ear to ear as the overhead light shines on his bald head, illuminating it like a bulb. I wonder if he applies lotion to it, to make it shine like that.
“I thought he was going to tell us he was changing the coffee brand in the kitchen. This is actually big news.” Lydia grins at me, her eyes bright.
I remove my gaze from Phil’s head. “Yeah, I’ll say. This is incredible, Lyds.”
White Fire has been the most anticipated book series release since… I don’t even know when. It’s a children’s series based around a magic, alternate world, and time travel. I never imagined our company getting the contract. Sure, we’re good and have talented designers. But we are small compared to some London giants. This is a huge deal.
Phil claps his hands to get everyone’s attention. “Now, I know you’re all very excited. This is an enormous project, and it will involve you all. The reason for this meeting is to announce the news to you, and to introduce you to the company we will work closely alongside.” He looks over towards the door as it opens. “So, I’m very pleased to introduce you to some of the team from King Publishing.” He holds up an arm like an assistant on a gameshow giving the ‘ta-dah!’ moment, as a woman and two men enter the room.
She’s smiling, and first impressions tell me she will be approachable. The first guy looks nice enough too, giving a small wave as he comes in. But it’s the last man that catches my attention. My body seems to know what’s happening before my mind has a chance to catch up, judging by the way all the small hairs on the back of my neck have stood up.
My eyes lock on him as he walks in and stands with the other two at the front of the room. He’s cool and unhurried, in his designer wool suit. He smiles and nods an acknowledgement to each person around the room. His dark hair with a touch of silver, catches the light as his deep grey eyes land on me. If he’s surprised, then he doesn’t show it. He holds my gaze and lifts a hand to his chin, rubbing his thumb across his lower lip as though deep in thought. The action only makes my eyes drop to his mouth and I swallow as I cross my legs and press my thighs together, willing the pulsing between them to stop.
“Who’s the fox?” Lydia whispers behind her hand.
I stare back into those eyes as Phil goes through the introductions. It seems the fox at the front of the room—still staring at me intently, his grey eyes burning into my skin—is Jaxon King, head of King Publishing.

Well, knock me over with a feather.

The man who, one month ago, gave me the best mind-blowing sex of my life.
All. Night. Long.

Jaxon King… who’s still watching me with those gorgeous stormy eyes.

The man who, the next morning, promised to call during the week to take me for dinner, telling me he had never had a night like ours in his entire life.

Still staring… and, God, his lips are as delicious as I remember.

Also, the man who never called.
Ever.

He is still sex on legs, though.

Pig.

AUTHOR BIO

Elle Nicoll is a British, ex long-haul flight attendant and mum of two.

She writes sweet, but dirty, contemporary romance novels, all based around love.
Not all the men she writes will be rich alphas. Not all the women will be sassy. Just like we are all different, they will be too.
But she hopes they will feel real. Flawed, insecure, broken maybe. But also warm, considerate and loyal. Any elements that you think of when you consider the people you know.
Because no one is perfect.
When Elle isn’t writing or falling for another new book boyfriend she is trying to look like a parent who knows what they’re actually doing. That, or staring at the sky day-dreaming and running another book idea by her husband, who has perfected his ‘listening with interest’ face.
It means the world to Elle that you’re considering reading her stories, and she loves to hear from readers.

Adalyn  I know my role. Be the witch Mom needs me to be, the leader the coven demands me to be, and the wife I have to be. My future is merely a means to ensure the coven remains the most powerful of our kind. So, I say the vows, complete the union, and marry the witch pre-chosen for me. Wanting nothing to do with him, I strike a deal to ensure my independence. My plan was concrete until that first kiss. I didn’t count on wanting him, let alone loving him. A love he’ll never return, and I must accept the fact before I’m gone forever. Jasper  A man needs but one goal in his life, and for me, it’s the acquisition of power. Finally, after the union ceremony I’ve been chasing, I have the magic of many, and with it, a wife I don’t want. Thankfully, she feels the same about me, removing the necessity of a typical marriage between us. But temptation is too compelling, and when one kiss turns into one night and one night turns into multiple, Adalyn is all I come to think about. She’s all I see. All I want. Until fate changes. Soon she’ll be gone and I’m forced to decide which matters more: magic or Adalyn.
