Grey backed her up against the rack on the left wall and gripped the edge of the shelf near the sides of her head. He leaned in, and his hard chest brushed against the sensitive tips of her breasts.

He pressed a kiss near her ear. “I’m not playing with you.”

Desire shallowed her breathing as she reached for the tucked edges of the towel. “No games here.”

The doorbell rang, and the front door lock disengaged.

Her hands froze, and Grey’s head snapped up.

The security system chimed with the opening of the door.

“Cori,” her mother called out. “It’s me.”

Panic blazed through Cori. In a matter of seconds, her mom would walk into the kitchen and see… She glanced down at Grey’s erection jutting out from the towel. Shit! Pushing past him, she whispered, “Stay here.”

“Wait—”

Cori rushed out, just closing the door behind her when Adina Ross came down the hallway.

“But it’s Saturday. Don’t you have a standing hair appointment this afternoon?”

Her mom smoothed a hand over her ebony hair that was pulled back into a ponytail. “I’m on my way there, but I needed to talk to you first. What were you so busy doing that you couldn’t call me back?”

“I ran into a friend I hadn’t seen in a while. We were out late catching up.”

“And this morning?”

My ears are flooded with the noises spewing from the intercom, frustrating my subconscious. The constant borage of feet pattering along the halls, totally disregarding my belligerent sobbing, only encourages the anger that’s slowly building within me. Sobbing that becomes obnoxiously louder the more I think of her smile. Her embrace. Her soft touch against my thick, hardened exterior. A touch that will never be felt again. The bar is loud and filled with laughter and conversation. I look at my phone to see what time it was: 2:48 p.m. I swallow the last of my beer when all of a sudden:

I immediately look at Richie and say, “What the fuck was…”

We all duck instinctively as a second blast rattles The Forum. There’s a ringing in my ears, but I can still hear blood-curdling screams. The front windows of the bar have been blown out and bloody people are pouring into the bar screaming for help. Running on fear and adrenaline, I race out the door to see what the fuck just happened.

Boylston Street is a war zone. Boston’s bravest men and women are trying to help as many people as they can, but hundreds of people are bleeding. Many have limbs blown clear off. It’s absolute carnage. Sirens almost drown out the screams and cries for help.

I turn to go back into the bar to get Rich and Gabs so we could get out of here, but the entry to The Forum is now jammed with people seeking help and shelter from whatever’s about to come next. As I try to get around the mob, I see her.

Lying on the sidewalk is a girl covered in blood. She’s crying, screaming for help and for someone named Tricia. The left pant leg of her jeans has been burned off and her leg is gushing blood. It’s as if I was watching a 3-D horror movie and some creature took a chunk out of her tiny calf.

People are running over this girl trying to get to safety. As tears stream down from her blue eyes and onto her blood-spattered cheeks, I know I have to help her. I take my belt off and approach her.

“I’m Michael. I’m going to help you. I am going to use my belt as a tourniquet, OK? It’s going to be tight, but we need to stop the bleeding.”

I search her small face, and she nods her head that she understands as she continues to sob and her whole tiny body shakes. I have no idea how much blood she lost and I don’t want her to lose consciousness.

“What’s your name, sweetheart? I need you to keep talking while I get you to an ambulance.”

She looks at me with horror still in her eyes. Her eyes. They’re the most magnificent color blue I have ever seen. I have blue eyes, but they’re pretty standard. Her eyes though, are the color of the Caribbean Sea.

‘“Ilee.”

Oh. God. Maybe she doesn’t speak English. Fuck the international appeal of this race! I have to get her name at least. Maybe she’ll understand if I speak more slowly and loudly.

“WHAT IS YOUR NAME, SWEETHEART? WHERE ARE YOU FROM?”

She looks at me and narrows her eyes as she chokes back a sob. She says equally as loud and as slow as I had spoken to her, “MY NAME IS ILEE. I AM FROM MILTON!”

When other guys my age were out doing God knows what, I was home making school lunches, helping with math homework, and making dioramas of Native American stories all the while keeping up with my very lucrative gaming hustle. I haven’t been with a woman in years. My last steady girlfriend was the girl I took to prom three months before my parents died. I haven’t been out with a woman in at least ten years. I tried to date at first but it was hard. Having a relationship just wasn’t possible. Most women only want me for my money. The others want fame. I am not inclined to let them seek it with me. Others ran when I told them I was raising my six younger brothers. Besides, there is only one woman I want and I don’t even know who she really is.

Her profile picture is just an up-close photo of stunning brown eyes and a sweep of brown bangs. Every time I upload something, she trolls the fuck out of me and oddly enough I love it. I finish the live game play and scroll through the comments. I am actively looking for her. Her snide, witty comments make me happy for some reason. My life revolved around my brother’s and gaming. Now that they are grown men and gaming holds little appeal, I relish reading her comments.

Now that my brothers are out there in the world, I’m finding myself having a bit of empty nest syndrome. They are doing things they are proud of, while I can’t even seem to be happy doing what I do.
