Before I know what I’m doing, I’m outta my chair and striding across the bar. Everett says my name, but I just shake my head and keep walking. When I get to the stool next to her, I pause to take her in. Tight ass jeans, a sparkly top, and curves for fucking days. Turned toward the bartender, she doesn’t see me, but he does. He gives me a chin tip before vanishing and I lift one leg over the stool to sit next to her. “Now don’t take this wrong, but you don’t really fit in here.” I lean in so she can hear me. “No, not really.” She turns to me, and I’m hit with big, chocolate doe eyes and even fuller lips than I imagined. “How’d you find yourself in O’Malley’s alone?” The bartender appears with another beer, and I thank him. “A job.” She shrugs and mirrors me by lifting her glass. A job. No fucking way this little thing could make it in this place. The patrons would eat her alive. I bite back a laugh. “But I don’t think he’s very impressed.” She nods to the man delivering drinks across the bar. I think his name is Drake, but I don’t remember. “Anyone not impressed with you is blind or wrong.” I wink at her and she smirks, still nursing the same beer. “If I didn’t know better, I’d say you were hitting on me.” “Good thing you know better.” I put out a hand. “Dax.” She slides her small, soft hand into mine. “Joslyn. It’s very nice to meet you.” Before she slides her hand from mine I run my thumb over her knuckles, reveling in the softness. “Nice to meet you, Joslyn. Now I have a question before we get better acquainted. Is there any reason you shouldn’t be talking to me alone in a bar?” I lean in, wanting, needing, to be closer to her. And hoping like hell she doesn’t have a man waiting for her somewhere. “Nope. But who said we needed to be better acquainted?” Mischief lights those brown eyes and her tongue darts out to lick her bottom lip. Fuck me, I want to be the one licking that lip. “I’m a nice guy. You seem like a nice girl. I think us getting acquainted sounds like a damn good idea.” I wink at her, and a pink blush starts at her chest and creeps up her neck to her cheeks. “What do you say? Wanna come join us over here?” Her eyes dart to my rowdy party behind us and her lips twist. I stand up and lean in close to her ear. “Don’t worry, none of them will lay a hand on you. You have my word.” Joslyn stands up, her head barely coming up to my shoulder, and looks up at me.

You’ve been there for me every step of the way today and I appreciate it more than I can say.”

Isaac was surprised by the mostly coherent words. Not just because Aaron didn’t stumble over a single word either. He hadn’t realized Aaron knew he kept talking to him so he wouldn’t dwell on what was happening. Aaron had been paying more attention than he’d realized and he didn’t sound as drunk as Isaac thought he was either.

“It is my job to take care of you.” He admitted, “But I’m glad I was able to be here for you too.”

Aaron was silent and Isaac took a deep breath, letting it out slowly. He wasn’t sure why the lack of response felt like a slight but he pushed the feeling down. This conversation was getting too deep and too personal. It was better that Aaron had either fallen asleep or gone back to watching the movie. He was still trying to decide if he should call it a night and go to bed or finish watching the movie with Aaron when he heard his name whispered softly from just over his shoulder a few minutes later.

“Isaac?”

“Hmm?”

“Isaac?”

“Yeah?” Isaac turned his head to look at Aaron where he lay on the sofa behind him when he said his name again.

In the dim light of the television he realized they were a lot closer than he’d thought. The light flickered over Aaron’s handsome face and Isaac’s eyes automatically fell to his lips. Aaron’s mouth parted slightly and Isaac watched as his tongue flicked out to wet his bottom lip. Isaac’s groin tightened even as he told himself to look away, to move away, that whatever closeness he was feeling was only because of the alcohol in his bloodstream.

But before he could talk sense into his inebriated brain, Aaron leaned forward and pressed his lips against Isaac’s in the softest flutter of a kiss.

“Stars,” I tell her, and the scene springs to life in front of me. The church basement and the cot with its white sheets dissolve into a humming dark. “There would be a million stars to look at. Skies so clear we could lie there and watch the constellations rise and set. We’d bring blankets and lay them out to watch. It would be warm if we held onto each other.”

Holly’s eyes flutter closed. The corner of her mouth curls in a smile. “Keep going.”

“We’d find a brook to drink from. Or maybe a lake, the kind that appears so suddenly. One minute there’s grass and ground. The next there’s water filled with reeds. They’d wave above the water while we slept. Or while we didn’t sleep.”

She laughs, the sound as dreamy as her eyes. Holly leans into my touch, her cheek warm against my palm. Blissfully warm. Heat means she’s alive. I haven’t stopped touching her, but I should.

I can’t.

“The ripples move through the reeds and onto the grass. They’re steady. And calm, for our camping trip. Calm water. The same sound wakes us up in the morning with the sun. Time means nothing out there. Everyone has enough.”

I don’t know what I’m saying anymore, but I keep talking. There are enough words to describe a day on the shore of the lake. A swim. An afternoon in the shade of a tent. An evening with a blazing sunset over the reeds and the water. Food over a campfire. Hot dogs and marshmallows. Innocent things. Things that make people like Holly happy. Stars, infinite stars.

Her breathing evens out. Gets deeper. I still can’t pull my hand away from her face. Not for a long time. The sunset is long over outside the church by the time I stand up and go about the second set of tasks. Getting rid of old gauze. Setting out new supplies. Counting her pills. We have enough water. There’s enough food. I turn off the overhead light and turn on an antique lamp brought down from the old church office.

It’s only when I take my seat again and listen to Holly’s deep breathing that I realize—

I wasn’t describing some fictional campground.
