Exclusive Excerpt:

I throw the truck into Park, grab my duffel bag and run up to the porch. I’m a little surprised when I find the front door unlocked and a few lights on. Then again, knowing Austin’s girlfriend, she probably asked someone to come out here to prep the place, stock the fridge and shit. She’s sweet as hell and too damn good for Austin.

I charge into the house, shaking myself like a golden retriever in the massive entryway. I drop my bag and stomp off to find the nearest toilet. I stare down a long hallway that has about a million doors and grumble. Definitely going to piss my pants.

One of the doors about halfway down is cracked and a flickering light has me charging toward it like a moth to a flame. I nudge the door open with my foot. My pants are already unzipped and my dick is in my hand. It’s dimly lit, but definitely a bathroom. Jackpot.

I skim my hand over the wall but can’t find a light switch. I’m scanning the room looking for the toilet when a bloodcurdling scream makes me drop my dick and jump about three feet in the air—pretty impressive for a guy who’s six-foot-three. The acrobatics have my pants sliding off my ass. I shuffle around in the dim light, pants around my ankles, dick out and my bladder completely forgotten. My heart is pounding. My gaze snaps to the bathtub and the source of the feminine screams.

A petite woman bolts upright in the tub, sloshing water over the sides. The only light in the room is a fire to her side and it casts a warm glow over her body. Her very naked, very wet body. I can see every inch of her from the tip of her head to her cute belly button. A patch of bubbles slides down her shoulder, gliding across her sharp collarbone before sinking between her perky round tits. I’d love to trace the same path with my tongue. It’s only been a few heartbeats, but I’m frozen in time, devouring every inch of her glistening skin.

“Fuck me,” I stutter on a labored breath.

She wraps an arm around her chest and my gaze finally makes it up to her face. She’s not scared—she’s furious.

She points behind me and shouts, “Get the hell out of here, Andrew Wright!”

I shake my head at the sound of my own name. I’ve got to be dreaming. Maybe I flipped my truck back on that dirt road out in the rain and this is all some crazy coma-induced hallucination.

“Now!” she screeches while I stare at her soft, round face in wonder.

Pert upturned nose, flushed cheeks, full heart-shaped lips, deep brown eyes and long silky black hair that begs to be coiled in my fist. My brain kicks back into gear and anger takes the place of lust. Michelle Anders. My eyes narrow on her, my jaw tightens and I scowl.

I glance at the toilet next to her and take a step toward it.

“Don’t you dare,” she chides.

I lift the lid without a word.

About Amelia Kingston:

Amelia Kingston is many things, the most interesting of which are probably California girl, writer, traveler, and dog mom. She survives on chocolate, coffee, wine, and sarcasm. Not necessarily in that order.

She’s been blessed with a patient husband who’s embraced her nomad ways and traveled with her to over 30 countries across 5 continents (I’m coming for you next, Antarctica!). She’s also been cursed with an impatient (although admittedly adorable) terrier who pouts when her dinner is 5 minutes late.

She writes about strong, stubborn, flawed women and the men who can’t help but love them. Her irreverent books aim to be silly and fun with the occasional storm cloud to remind us to appreciate the sunny days. As a hopeless romantic, her favorite stories are the ones that remind us all that while love is rarely perfect, it’s always worth chasing.

“I want to see you again. Meet me tomorrow.” It’s not a request, it’s an order. I shrug out of his touch and take a step away from him.
“Are you crazy? No.”
“Why not?” he asks, his eyes more piercing than ever.
“A million reasons. You’re my mother’s boss, and she hates you, by the way. Why would I go out with someone who’s been so awful to my mother? Oh, and you’re old. You’re my mother’s boss,” I repeat. “And Glen’s already asked me out and about a million other reasons!” I whisper-yell the last part to make sure he gets it.
“The Glen issue is simple. Tell him to fuck off. I have not been awful to your mother. She’s been hostile toward me since the day I stepped foot in the office. She has a problem with me because I’m not my uncle. And what other reasons? Are you talking about my melanin deficiency? What the hell century are you living in? You think I care about that? And I want to see you again, not your mother. And thirty-six is hardly old.”
“Thirty-six! That’s older than I thought. Holy shit!” I yell. “Do you realize when I was thirteen you were already twenty-six?”
“Unless I was asking you out when you were thirteen and I was twenty-six, I don’t see the problem.

By day, I’m a strict principal of a private school filled with wealthy families like the one I grew up in. By night, I’m a lithe assassin with a penchant for latex and roller derby. At least my cosplay character is, and I never let my personal life bleed into my professional one. Until the handsome comic book shop owner I had a steamy session with at the local comic con walks into my office.

Chris is the father of one of my students, and completely off limits. I wouldn’t be a good role model for all my young students if I trashed my career over a guy, not even one I can’t quit thinking about.
***
As a business owner and single father, I don’t have time to date. But when work and pleasure collide in a dark corner of the local comic con, I’m willing to make dating a priority. Only the hot cosplayer in the tight body suit disappears in the crowd before I get her real name.
When I see her again, she’s behind an imposing desk, wearing eye glasses instead of a mask, and reprimanding my daughter. Natalia’s determined to keep our roles strictly professional, but I’m determined to get another taste of the uninhibited woman hidden under that business suit.

EXCERPT

Emma, dressed in a long winter coat and carrying two giant bouquets of flowers, busted through the doors like she was on a mission. From his spot at the end of the line, Andrew did a double take.

“Emma?” He nudged his father and pointed. “Is that Emma?”
“Looks like,” Jeffrey said. He waved and caught her attention. She jogged over to them, huffing and out of breath. “Oh God, am I late? It’s been so hard getting a car during the holidays this year, I thought I wasn’t going to make it.” She looked between them. “Hi.”
The Mooney men stared, jaws dropped.
“What are you doing here?” Andrew blurted. His father hit him in the chest, and he coughed. “I mean, I wasn’t expecting you.”
She shifted the flowers to one arm and reached into her pocket, pulling out a piece of paper. “Oh. Well, I was invited.”
“You were?” he asked. Her hair was twisted into some kind of knot on the back of her head, and a couple of stray strands fell around her face. So pretty.
Jeffrey whacked him again. “What my son means to say is that it’s nice to see you again, and no, you’re not late. We were about to go in.”
“Great. Thank you, Jeffrey.” She scowled at Andrew.
He shifted his weight under her stare, fidgeting like a madman. “I don’t mean to be rude, but how did you end up here tonight? Not that I’m complaining. I’m not. It’s just…” He scratched his five o’clock shadow. “It’s… wow… you look…stunning.”
She smiled tersely. “I told you. I was invited.”
“By whom?”
She shoved the piece of paper toward him, the same invitation for the show that the girls had made him and Jeffrey. The photocopied play information had dotted lines for the kids to write in invitees on top of the sheet, and dotted lines for them to sign the bottom. On top of Emma’s sheet, the girls had written in crayon: Miss Emma. On the bottom of the sheet, they signed it Devon and Bella. They’d drawn a cupcake next to their names.
His heart beat sped up. “And you actually came?”
“Of course,” she said. “That’s the cutest invitation I’ve ever received, and they wanted me here. How could I not come? I hope it’s okay.”
“You could have let me know. I would have picked you up.”
They’d reached the door to the auditorium. Jeffrey held it open, and Andrew shifted to the side to let Emma in first.
As she walked by, she lifted her chin. “You said in your text that you didn’t want to talk to me until after the holidays, Andrew.”
His father scoffed.
Andrew twisted to shoot his father a look as he followed Emma into the auditorium, still holding her invitation. She walked a couple of steps in front of him, looking for empty seats.
He jogged to catch up. “That was a poorly worded text message,” he said, over the band’s rendition of Jingle Bells.
“Uh-huh.” She pointed to three seats in the middle of a row. “How about there?”
Without waiting for him to respond, she wiggled her way into the middle of the row, holding the flowers high, squeezing past the families singing along to the Christmas tune. She sat in the farthest seat. Andrew settled next to her, and then Jeffrey followed in the third seat. She handed Andrew the flowers and stood again, shimmying off her coat.

About ELLE GRECO

I write fiction about badass women (and the people they love).

Urban Fantasy lovers will know me as Karen Greco, author of the best-selling Hell’s Belle series. My Contemporary Romance books are written under Elle Greco.

While the genres are worlds apart, strong female characters are the chain that links all my worlds.

These women are magical. They wield wicked weapons. They play a mean drum solo. They fall in love. They rule the boardroom and the bedroom.

Whatever they do, they do it with swagger.

My storytelling career began when I forced everyone play “make believe” with me when I was a kid. That eventually morphed into banging out short stories on my mom’s old manual typewriter. As I got older, I graduated to penning bad poetry, then not terrible plays as a teenager. I studied playwright in college but my career took a detour and I ended up working in journalism and then entertainment publicity, which kept me busy for 20 or so years.

My “day job” has taken me from gritty rock clubs in The Bowery to glam red carpets during movie premieres and awards shows. My background working with talent (and the suits) in the industry has served me well with the LA Rock Star Romance series.

A few years ago, I decided to pursue my original passion and a few full-length novels later, here we are.

I love anything spooky and impossible to explain. If you love hanging out in cemeteries, the older the better, I’d totally go on a road trip with you.

I have two rescue dogs, a patient husband, and an awesome kid.

I hated my job. I had no social life.

Somehow I had become so predictable after my last relationship ended, that the cashier at the local food mart already had my favorite wine bagged and waiting for me behind the counter when I walked in on Friday afternoon.

I needed to get away, from everything.

So when my best friend, Addie, called up and offered me a FREE weekend getaway, how could I say no.

Promises of a quiet weekend with a good book, warm fires, and flannel pajamas? Yes, please!

Austin

It had been eighteen months.

Eighteen months, since I had lost my wife in a car accident and learned that our marriage had been nothing but one big lie.

I’d done nothing but work and mope around my sister’s house, so when she told me to take her cabin for the weekend. Time alone, surrounded by nature and the fresh cold mountain air was exactly what I’d been needing.

However, my plans of being alone in the wilderness quickly vanished when I walked through the doors of the cabin and found my sister’s best friend drunk and half-naked on the floor of the very same cabin.

I’d hidden my crush on her for years. Perhaps, not well enough. After all, Addie must have set this up.

The weekend was about to get a lot more interesting.

Kristy

I sat doodling figure eights on the paper that sat in front of me. Tom’s voice was sounding more like nails on a chalkboard than ever before. I swore this day was never going to end, and the more he droned on, the more I was convinced I was right. Who the hell calls a meeting at three in the afternoon on a Friday, for goodness’ sake. I glanced up at the clock. For a meeting that was only supposed to take a half an hour, my boss sure was winded. He had been going on nonstop for close to an hour and fifteen minutes, and all I could think of was cracking open a bottle of wine and vegging on my couch.

“Everyone, thank you for your time and have a great weekend,” Tom, my boss and ex-boyfriend, called out. I glanced up and caught him watching me, giving me a half smile. I dropped my eyes back to the form in front of me.

Jen smacked me in the arm, grabbing my attention. “Let’s get out of here,” she said, scooping up the papers that sat in front of her.

I glanced around the room. Half of the people were already out the door, and here I was still sitting here doodling, while my ex stood there trying to get my attention. I quickly shoved all the notes into a pile, gave Tom a look, and followed Jen out of the boardroom and back to our offices.

“Honestly, a late-Friday afternoon meeting that really could have been summed up over an email. That was a complete and total waste of time. I could have been halfway home by now,” I mumbled as we stepped out of the elevator.

“I know. I swear that man does this on purpose. Seems it’s every single Friday night,” Jen replied. “Do you have any plans for the weekend?”

“The usual, you know: drown my sorrows in a bottle of wine and shove my face with sweets.” We both laughed as we made our way back to our offices.

“That sounds delightful. I’ll see you Monday?”

“Yep, I will be here.”

I shut the door to my office and jumped behind my computer to send out my final few emails of the day before I packed up my bag. Even though I had zero plans, I was happy it was Friday. I was simply happy to have a couple of days to myself and not have to come into this hellhole I called a job.

My job hadn’t always been bad. At one time, I’d actually liked it here. Then I started seeing Tom, my boss, which hadn’t been the best idea I’d had. We had dated last summer, probably one of the best summers I’d ever had. Then fall came, he had gotten a new assistant, and things started to get rocky. My performance at work slowed, and suddenly, instead of being praised as one of the best employees, I quickly flew to the bottom of his list. Not only did it cause strain here at the job, but it caused strain on our relationship.

One afternoon, I found out why I had been placed on the bottom of his list, and it wasn’t due to my work ethic. I’d gone up to see Tom in his office like usual to finalize our plans for the weekend. His assistant wasn’t at her desk when I arrived. I really didn’t think anything of it. I just knocked and walked into his office, like I normally did at the end of every Friday. What I saw when I walked into his office I wish I could unsee. His assistant sat on his desk, her skirt pulled up around her thighs, and there in between her legs was Tom.

I could barely believe my eyes, and I instantly felt sick as she hung her head back to moan, I let out a gasp as I covered my mouth. They both looked in my direction, her immediately pulling at her skirt to cover herself up, while he begged me to let him explain. I could feel the heat on my face and took off running toward the elevator.

Tom ran after me, begging for my forgiveness, causing a huge scene. I went home that Friday, had a good cry, and contemplated reporting him to Human Resources. Instead, on Sunday, I called him at home and broke up with him. He’s begged me for another chance, but I told him the damage was already done and to keep his distance. Now for the past year and a half I have been subjected to his last-minute meetings, along with looks that no boss should be giving his employee.

I finished packing my bag and was just about to throw it over my shoulder when, out of the corner of my eye, I saw Tom walking slowly down the hall. I rolled my eyes. “Please don’t stop. Please don’t stop,” I mumbled to myself.

The door to my office pushed open and Tom stuck his head in. “Kristy, don’t forget to go over the final images for the magazine layout this weekend. I’d like to have them in my hands by Sunday night.”

I sucked in a breath and pasted a fake smile across my face. “Sure thing.” He had been doing this to me since we had broken up, finding some way to make me work the entire weekend on something. I had been the one who complied, but now I was getting tired of it.

He nodded. “Have a good weekend, Kristy.” He waved and went to continue his way down the hall, then stepped back in my doorway. “Oh, Kristy, I was thinking perhaps you could drop the package off at my place on Sunday night. It would be nice if we could go over your work together.”

That invite struck at my last nerve. There was no way in hell I was going to be caught dead going to his condo just so he could hit on me in private. “I don’t think so. It can wait until Monday, Tom,” I bit out, praying he got the hint.

“Sunday,” he said with a little more force as he stared at me. He tapped his hand on the doorframe, his eyes washing over me, and then continued on, making his way down the hall.

I reached into my bag and pulled out the USB stick that held the images I was planning to use for the layouts and placed it in the top drawer of my desk. “Guess that will just have to wait until Monday now.” I giggled to myself, flipping my bag over my shoulder.

Horns blared as I stepped out onto the sidewalk. The Friday afternoon traffic is heavy already, I thought to myself as I began to walk towards home. I was about halfway down the block when snow started to fall heavily. I stopped at the grocery store just like I did every Friday for my usual bottles of wine and some snack food and wished that I had decided to drive this morning instead of walk.

“Hey, Dena.” I waved at my favorite cashier as I wiped my snow-covered shoes on the mat inside the door.

“Hey, Kristy, I have already bagged your usual bottles of wine. I have them behind the counter here waiting for you. One bottle is cold, two are warm.”

I nodded my thanks and made my way down the aisles to the hot food table. Had I really become that predictable that the cashier at my neighborhood Food Mart knew what wine I normally bought and had it pre-bagged for me before I’d even gotten there? I picked up some food off the hot counter, a couple of bags of chips and some candy, and made my way to the front of the store with my arms full.

Twenty minutes later, I shoved the key in the lock to my apartment and kicked the door open, running to the small table in the corner of the kitchen where I set the bags down just before they slipped out of my hands. I shoved the cold bottle of wine into the fridge, locked my apartment door, and went and had a quick shower.

Dressed in my favorite pair of yoga pants and a T-shirt, I swept my long, dark hair up into a clip and grabbed the phone. I dialed Addie’s number. It was my usual Friday night bitch session where I complained to her about Tom and all the other things that had gone wrong in my life during the week.

The phone only rang once before she picked it up. “Kristy! Happy Friday!”

I laughed out loud at her enthusiasm. “Hey!” I tried but my voice clearly didn’t share her sentiments.

“What’s wrong? You should be thrilled to be out of that place.” She giggled.

“I am just so done. Tom actually had the nerve to invite me over to his place Sunday night.”

“What for?”

“He claims it was to go over my photo choices for the magazine layout. I know he is just using it as an excuse to get me alone. It pissed me off so much I may have accidentally left the USB stick that contained the images in my desk drawer. Whoops.”

“You should have reported him when you had the chance. I can’t believe that he’s still bothering you.”

“I know I should have. I just seriously need a new life. If that wasn’t bad enough, he called an emergency meeting at three o’clock this afternoon to go over everything that seriously could have been summed up in an email about a paragraph long.”

“What a dick.”

“Then, as if everything wasn’t ending on a high enough note, I stopped at Food Mart on my way home and Dena already had my three bottles of wine bagged and behind the counter. Can you believe it?”

Addie let out a loud laugh. “Oh, Kristy, that’s hilarious.”

“Yah it’s really funny. It’s pitiful. Seriously, I am twenty-five. When did I become predictable? I am supposed to be carefree, partying it up every weekend, sleeping with random dudes. Instead, the cashier at the grocery store knows that every Friday, at exactly five fifteen, I walk in and buy three bottles of Cupcake Vineyards Moscato, one cold, and two warm, to drown my sorrows over the weekend.”

“It sounds like you need a vacation.”

“I so do. I need away from everything,” I bit out, opening the bag of gummy bears I had bought and shoving four of them in my mouth.

“Why don’t you head up to the cottage? Phil and I were supposed to go this weekend, but he’s on call, so we had to change our plans.”

“I don’t know. It’s already almost six. It would take me a bit to get there.”

“Nonsense. You need this. It’s supposed to be a beautiful weekend. Serenity Lake is already covered in snow, and you will have the entire cabin to yourself. You, nature, the mountains. Book a massage, go horseback riding, spend the day in nature. It’s exactly what you need.”

I glanced around at my empty apartment. I could either stay here and wallow in self pity, looking at the four white walls, or I could get in my car, drive up to the mountains, and spend the weekend in that beautiful rustic cabin that Addie’s family had owned for years, surrounded by wildlife and beautiful scenery.

“Are you sure? I feel kind of bad going when I know you guys were planning this weekend for so long.”

“I wouldn’t have offered it if I wasn’t sure, Kristy. Phil can’t go far. His rotation was changed, and he is on call all weekend. So go, have a good time. I’ll even call ahead and book you in for a massage at the hotel down the road with Shawn. I’ll book it for when you arrive tonight.”

“Shawn?”

“Oh you will love him. He has the best hands in the world, not to mention he is a total hottie.”

I let out a laugh. I could practically see the expression on Addie’s face right now as she said those words. The idea of being pampered did sound great. At least it was better than staying here and wallowing the entire weekend. “All right, fine, no need to twist my arm. I will go.

“Yay!” I could hear her clapping on the other end of the phone and imagined her jumping up and down with excitement because I’d agreed to take her up on her offer.

“Okay I am going to go and book your massage. My treat, okay! Did you want me to email you directions?”

“No, Addie, the cottage is enough. I will pay for my massage. I think I remember how to get there, but just in case I don’t, please email them.”

“You got it, babe! Have a great time!”

“You too.”

“Oh, and don’t do anything I wouldn’t do.” Addie laughed into the phone, and suddenly, I wished that she was joining me on this weekend away. I desperately needed girl time or something to take my mind off of everything I had going on.

We said our good-byes, and I took off down the hall towards my bedroom and packed my bag. I was going to spend the entire weekend in the mountains alone, which may be exactly what I needed to unwind.

New Release ~ Yours ~ by ~ Elena M. Reyes

Title: Yours
Series: Beautiful Sinner Series
Author: Elena M. Reyes
Genre: Romantic Suspense/Contemporary Romance
Release Date: November 6, 2020

I’m a man with an immoral compass. A convicted killer in one country and the right-hand to the devil in another.

Javier Lucas offers death without mercy. Something, my enemies don’t live long enough to tell but the carnage left behind paints a brutal story. I have no soul. No regrets. This is who I am, and I embrace the darkness that flows through my veins while blood stains my skin.

And I’ve never wanted more until…

Our eyes met and my world took a pause. One flirty exchange and I vowed to tame her wildness.

Fate is a word I now believed in.

Because it led me to her. To my beautiful little criminal.

“Take another step and I’ll shoot you.” There’s a hint of amusement in her tone, and the decadent sound sends a rush of excitement down my spine. Every nerve ending vibrates as her scent, a sweet and floral tone, infiltrates my senses. The owner of the voice is close, invading my personal space, and my nostrils flare—my cock giving a harsh jerk behind the confines of my zipper. What the fuck? “Now, the question here is…are you feeling frisky?”

“Those are dangerous words for a…” I begin but trail off when she steps into my line of sight, hand on her hip and eyes challenging. Fuck. This woman is beautiful: a tiny doll with a hint of wickedness behind those seafoam eyes and a taste of depravity in every sinful curve.

Because I take her in.

All of her.

From her dark auburn hair to the dangerous heels on her tiny feet; this woman is perfection. At no more than five feet and three inches, she draws something from deep within that makes me throb where I stand, but it’s the cockiness—that tiny curl of her upper lip that brings forth the asshole in me.

I take a step forward, loving the way her chest expands.

I lick my bottom lip, savoring the way she follows the movement with unveiled interest.

Who is she?

“Who are you?” she asks without pause. No shame in the way she watches me.

“I’ll tell you after I meet with your boss, Muñeca.” There’s a slight narrowing of her eyes and purse to her top lip at my words, and they make me want to bite her. To keep pushing her buttons to see if she snaps—if she scratches. “So be a good girl for me and let him know Javier Lucas is here.”

“What did you just say? What did you call me?” My eyes skim down her front and pause on a small name tag attached to her white silk top. “I think I heard wrong.”

“Mariah,” I croon low, savoring her name on my tongue and the small hitch in her breath. There’s a slight tremble that she quickly hides behind a rigid back when I close the space between us. “Muñeca…my little doll, I asked that you do your job and announce me. I promise to reward you after.”

“Step back,” she hisses through gritted teeth, her expression angry, but I catch the straining of two little nipples against her top. The goose bumps on her arms. “I’ll give you to the count of—”

“Mariah, let me know when Mr. Lucas arrives,” a male voice says from the doorway at the far back of the room. It startles her, and she jumps back as if burned while I hold my ground, never taking my eyes off of her. Never addressing the man I came here to see.

“He’s here, Malcolm.” I don’t like the way she says his name. The familiarity and ease when she should address him as her superior and nothing else.

“You mean Mr. Asher?” The bite in my tone isn’t missed by either, and I feel the man’s eyes on me. Sense when he comes closer, and if I were a lesser man, I’d cower back.

But I’m not. Never will be.

“Is there a problem here between you and my cousin, Mr. Lucas?”

Cousin? She’s his cousin? I’m better than to miss an important fact like this.

For the first time in my life, I’m speechless—a bit embarrassed—and all I can manage is a shake of my head, and yet, pulling my attention away from her is impossible. The jealousy that burned through me like molten acid unnerves me, but at the same time, excites me. It’s shaken me, and by the coquettish look in those beautiful orbs, Mariah knows this.

Finds my reaction amusing. Motherfucking dangerous.

“Mr. Lucas seems to take his formalities extremely serious, Malcolm. Cut him some slack. It might be a cultural thing.” My eyes narrow at her words, but her cousin merely chuckles to my right where he seems to be taking in my fumble.

“Is that so, Javier?”

“Not at all.” I flick my attention in his direction for ten seconds—moments where I take in the familial resemblance and smirk—before meeting Mariah’s challenge head-on. “I’ve just been caught off guard by your cousin’s beauty. That’s all.”“I am spectacular, cousin,” she says, and then fucks me in a way that tests my control. I’m left hanging by a very thin thread and every muscle in my body tenses, coils when her delicate fingers land on my chest while closing the distance between us. There’s playfulness in her words while her body language teases. “Can’t fault the man for having impeccable taste.”

Autumn’s voice chimed from the depths of my bag. “Soph? Sophie? Are you still there?”

I scrabbled to retrieve the phone. “Yes, sorry. Did you hear that? It’s totally unheard of for him to offer me an early finish.”

She laughed. “You should have taken it. We could have had coffee, and you could give me tips for my date.”

I echoed her laughter. I was the last person she should be taking dating advice from. “Now, where were we?”

“Travel plans for the wedding. You, me, Jodie.”

And Max, I added silently. Ugh. Why was I thinking about him now?

“Max has to be there early, for the rehearsal dinner or something, otherwise he’d drive us.”

I drifted off into a fantasy of spending several hours in a confined space with Max Coady, watching him drive, the muscles in his forearms working as he took control of the wheel, breathing in his aftershave…reluctantly I shook myself back to the present. Seriously, I had to get this crush under control. Maybe I’d meet someone at the wedding who would sweep me off my feet. I sighed.

Who was I kidding?

Unrequited love was a bitch.

Of course, I couldn’t tell Autumn this. Not since she’d decided at the age of fourteen that I couldn’t ever—EVER—date her brother. I’d had to keep my fantasies under control since then. Maybe that was one of the reasons I hadn’t managed to find a serious boyfriend. Because no one ever compared to Max.

“Soph? Where are you?” Autumn’s voice broke into my reverie. “I asked what time you want to meet on Friday. It’s going to take us around an hour and a half to get there.”

“Ha, longer if Jodie’s in charge of directions.” I half giggled, half grimaced. I’d been on enough road trips with Jodie to know we needed to add at least another half an hour onto our trip time. She had an uncanny knack of getting close to a place, but not actually to it. There had been plenty of times we’d driven past where we were meant to be simply because she couldn’t work out how to get us there. “Do we have a map?”

“Didn’t you get the ton of information Brianna sent with the invite? I reckon there’s a map in there with directions from every state in the US!” Autumn laughed.

I thought back to the day the invitation pack had plopped onto my doormat. Thicker than a college acceptance pack, it contained every single piece of information about the day. Not to mention a few pictures of throwbacks to the proposal, engagement party, and bachelor and bachelorette parties. Apart from finding out the date, I’d shoved the rest of it in a drawer in my kitchenette. I was still finding glittery horseshoes in my apartment weeks after the damn invite had been delivered.

“Well, good. Because with Jodie driving, we’ll probably need them!”
