Review Tour ~ Trust ~ by ~ Kylie Scott

Being young is all about the experiences: the first time you skip school, the first time you fall in love…the first time someone holds a gun to your head.

After being held hostage during a robbery at the local convenience store, seventeen year old Edie finds her attitude about life shattered. Unwilling to put up with the snobbery and bullying at her private school, she enrolls at the local public high school, crossing paths with John. The boy who risked his life to save hers.

While Edie’s beginning to run wild, however, John’s just starting to settle down. After years of partying and dealing drugs with his older brother, he’s going straight—getting to class on time, and thinking about the future.

An unlikely bond grows between the two as John keeps Edie out of trouble and helps her broaden her horizons. But when he helps her out with another first—losing her virginity—their friendship gets complicated.

Meanwhile, Edie and John are pulled back into the dangerous world they narrowly escaped. They were lucky to survive the first time, but this time they have more to lose—each other.

“You were going to give it up to Duncan Dickerson?” he sneered. “Are you serious?”

I halted, staring at him. This was not good. “How do you know about that?”

“Anders overheard you and Hang talking.”

“Bastard.”

“Well?” he demanded, acting all authoritarian. Idiot.

“To be fair, I didn’t know his last name was Dickerson,” I said. “That’s unfortunate. Though, I wasn’t actually planning on marrying him, so . . .”

“Not funny.”

I shrugged.

“You barely know the guy.”

“Um, yeah. None of your concern. We’re not talking about this.” How mortifying! My face burned bright. People should just gather around and cook s’mores. “I appreciate that we’re friends. You mean a lot to me. But this is going to have to fall under definitely none of your damn business, so go away please.”

“We’re talking about it.” He advanced a step.

“No we are not.” And I retreated.

“You were going to let a complete stranger touch you.” Advance.

Retreat. “People do it all the time. You do it all the time.”

“But you don’t,” he said, taking the final step, backing me up against the side of his car and getting all in my face. “Edie, this is your first time we’re talking about. Isn’t it?”

“Yes, and it’s going to be messy and painful and probably horribly embarrassing and I just want it over and done with.” I tried to meet his eyes but failed, settling for a spot on his right shoulder. “You’re not a girl; you wouldn’t understand. Also, last time I checked, you’re not the gatekeeper of my hymen, John Cole. So back the fuck off.”

He said nothing.

Deep, calming breaths. “Look, someday I’ll meet someone I really like and we’ll have a deep and meaningful relationship and go at it like bunnies. But I don’t want to be the dumb virgin in that scenario.”

He slowly shook his head.

“Also, I do not want to die a virgin.”

“What? What the hell are you talking about?”

“Hey, you and I both know death can occur at any time.”

“This is crazy.”

“I’m seeing a therapist!” I told his shoulder. “I don’t know if you noticed, but I’m a little bit messed up these days. It’s hard for me to trust people. That’s not going to change anytime soon.”

He screwed up his face at me. “Wha—”

“I’m just trying to be practical.”

“Well, you’re being ridiculous. None of this makes sense.”

“It does to me.”

Again, he said nothing.

In fact, he said nothing for so long that I finally looked him in the eye. The anger had left him, replaced by an emotion I didn’t recognize. Worst of all, he still smelled like summer. A little sweat and the open night air, everything I loved. Liked. I meant liked.

“What?” I said, finally.

He let loose a breath. “I’ll do it.”

TBRreview

I’m not a huge YA reader – NA yes but these characters were 17/18 so I figure they could qualify as NA.

Edie is living her young life as normal. She and her friend are at a Harry Potter movie-thon and need some snacks. Edie runs into the convenience store and there her life changes. She ends up being part of an armed holdup and having a gun pointed at her more than once. This is also where she meets John who saved her life. As I was reading this event, I could feel my anxiety rising because I was in the story watching this armed robbery.

This crime changes Edie drastically. She is suddenly acting out, quick to lose her temper and just wanting to not be “the girl who had a gun pointed at her”. Thankfully, her savior John, forms a friendship with Edie and is just what she needs to get through the nightmares. And John needs her because he’s leaving his life of being the high school dealer and needs a friend.

I loved this story so much! Ever since I was introduced to Kylie Scott’s writing, I haven’t read a book of hers that I haven’t loved. Plus this one was set near my hometown, so that added an extra love.

About Trust:

“Knock knock!”

“Um… Who’s there?”

Yeah. That was me, on my last date. Before you feel sorry for me

you should know that I was the one telling the jokes. Jokes as in

plural, because I didn’t stop with just one. Of course not.

Hi, I’m Chloe Scott. The most awkward single girl in the city.

But I’m going to get it together. I am.

I’m going to learn how to date like a grown up.

I’m going to have an orgasm not given to myself.

I’m going to fall in love and live happily ever after.

Right after I get out of this interrogation room.

Exclusive Excerpt:

I need to remember to be careful with this girl. She’s so… unsure of herself. She seems self-reliant, yet there’s this undercurrent of doubt that I don’t yet understand.

She walks across the studio and pulls a denim jacket from a small closet and shrugs into it, then picks up her bag and slings it over her shoulder. “Are you ready?”

I nod and follow her out, watching as she locks the door then tugs on it to make sure it’s locked. We take the elevator down in silence then hit the sidewalk outside before she asks if we’re walking or driving.

“Driving,” I tell her, nodding to the parking spot I got in front of her building. I unlock the car and open the passenger door for her before walking around and getting behind the wheel.

“This is nice,” she says, glancing around the interior of my Range Rover. “This is more James Bond than FBI though,” she says, with a little wrinkle of her nose, her forehead creasing in concern.

“Are you disappointed?”

She shrugs. “It is a nice car,” she says as she buckles herself in and crosses her legs, resting her hands on her knees. “But I don’t think it’s government-issued.”

I laugh. “It’s not. Does that disappoint you?” I ask, starting the car and merging into traffic.

“I guess it’s okay.” Another shrug.

I take a right onto the Schuylkill and ask if she’s learned any new knock-knock jokes since I last saw her.

She turns her head and gives me a look. “Funny.”

“I’m genuinely curious,” I say. “You were killing it the other night.”

“No. But speaking of killing, did you know that at any given time, there are between twenty and fifty serial killers in the United States? Did you know that?” She turns in her seat to look at me, her eyes wide with interest.

“That’s quite the transition, from knock-knock jokes to serial killers,” I comment while turning on the ramp to the I-676.

“Oh, yeah. Sorry.” She shakes her head. “I just thought it would be fewer.”

“Uh-huh.”

“Like ten. I thought it would be ten. Maybe fifteen.”

“One would think.” I nod. Not really. Who thinks about this shit?

Chloe is so much me!!  Not necessarily the naivete but the total dork and awkward dater.  And I LOVE her!  Chloe is such a goofball and she’s awesome.  She’s just so clueless about men and dating.  She meets men online and boy does she meet some winners.

Boyd takes it upon himself to help out clueless Chloe and practice her dating by being a fake date.  He wants Chloe to relax and not tell random knock-knock jokes when she’s nervous.  Although he does seem to like those, he just doesn’t want her nervous.

This was just a LOL story and I want to read the whole series again and re-meet all the girls!  Especially Everly.  I miss her crazy self!
