About A PLAYER FOR A PRINCESS

From the Mediterranean to the Caribbean, the game continues…

Zelda Wilder is on the run, this time from the ruthless assassins who’ve decided she knows too much to live.

“Playboy Prince” MacCallum Lockwood Tate isn’t about to let the beautiful player who stole his heart get away—if only he could decide whether he wants to save her or strangle her for her dangerous choices.

After tracking her down to a casino in St. Croix, Cal follows Zee back to Tortola where he intends to keep her safe. One problem: Zelda’s criminal liaisons are two steps ahead of her.

Lives are threatened, and all of the players’ skills are tested in this plot to capture a killer and save a princess.

Cinderella meets Ocean’s Eleven in this CONTEMPORARY ROMANCE DUET featuring secrets, lies, royal high jinks, scams and double-crosses; breathless, swooning lust, cocky princes, dominant alpha future-kings, and crafty courtiers, who are not always what they seem.

“Tons of laughs, sex, and suspense…THE PRINCE & THE PLAYER had me on the edge of my seat, biting my nails, and blushing like crazy!” – Shayna Renee’s Spicy Reads

Let the games begin…

Runaway Zelda Wilder will do whatever it takes to secure a better life for her and her sister Ava. Crown Prince Rowan Westringham Tate will do whatever it takes to preserve his small country.

When Zee is blackmailed into helping a vengeful statesman take down Rowan, she never expects she’ll be pulled into a web of lies and international intrigue–much less that she’ll find herself falling for Cal, Rowan’s “playboy” younger brother.

Ava’s no help, as she finds quiet walks in the moonlight discussing poetry and leadership with the brooding future king irresistible. Even more irresistible is kissing his luscious lips.

They’re in over their heads, and the more time passes, the more danger the sisters are in. Shots are fired, and it’s soon clear even a prince might not be able to rescue these players.

First off, YOU MUST READ THE PRINCE & THE PLAYER!!!  Otherwise, this book will make no sense.  You need to learn about Zee and Cal and their adventures.  Plus, book 1 ends in one hell of a cliffhanger that this book answers!

Zelda is running for her life!  And Cal wants to protect her.  This story continues with the spies, drama, high octane story line that got me hooked in the first book!  This series can easily be an action, romantic, suspense movie.

That’s all I’m saying besides READ IT!

About BEHIND CLOSED DOORS

My name is Roman Cavenaugh and I’m kind of an asshole.

Running a company isn’t easy, especially when everyone expects you to fail, so being a jerk? It comes with the territory.

I don’t have time to mess around, and I sure as hell didn’t see her coming.

Cara Hamilton—she was supposed to be off limits…a temporary employee brought in during my assistant’s maternity leave.

But, in the blink of an eye, she became so much more.
An obsession I couldn’t shake.

So yeah, I may be an asshole, but now, I finally had a purpose, and soon, she would be mine.

I loved the concept of this book upon reading the synopsis and the story exceeded that!
Roman has always been the gruff, quiet, demanding businessman because he has had to be. Any softness he’s shown, he wants his brother to take credit for it. However, he has also closed himself off from people, relationships, friends and just general social niceties. Until that sweet girl from Nebraska is too sweet and pure for him not to bend.
Cara is sweet and naive and just a general joy for Roman. She sees below his tough guy exterior to the man underneath who can be caring and sweet and generous. And she wants him to explore that more.
This story was just amazing! Roman was such a curmudgeon and Cara just brings out the sweetness in him. More for everyone to see.

About Playing It Cool:

Harper Nugent might have a little extra junk in her trunk, but her stepbrother calling her out on it is the last straw… When rugby hottie, Dexter Blake, witnesses the insult, he surprises Harper by asking her out. In front of her dumbass brother. Score! Of course, she knows it’s not for reals, but Dex won’t take no for an answer.

Dexter Blake’s life revolves around rugby with one hard and fast rule: no women. Sure, his left hand is getting a workout, but he’s focused on his career for now. Then he overhears an asshat reporter belittle the curvy chick he’d been secretly ogling. What’s a guy to do but ask her out? It’s just a little revenge against a poser, and then he’ll get his head back in the game.

But the date is better than either expected. So is the next one. And the next. And the heat between them…sizzles their clothes right off.

Suddenly, this fake relationship is feeling all too real…

I love these rugby books!!
First off, Dex can be a sweetheart but he can also be a bit of an asshole. So know that going in. But he also knows that he’s hot for Harper and isn’t going to let her step brother talk down to her curvy-ness. So he steps up and lets her brother hear him ask Harper out.
Harper has always seen what she is, a big girl. And if she didn’t, her step mother and brother would make sure to remind her. Until Dex. Dex makes her feel pretty, sexy and worthy.
But Dex plans to only focus on rugby until he has to retire. Not women. Except Harper isn’t what he was expecting.
I loved this story even though Dex was a bit of a tool at times. But he loves Harper for who she is and how he feels with her.

Steve Johnson is living his life’s passion watching over the Colorado Mountains as a ranger and wildlife consultant. But his peaceful life is upended when overzealous and insanely beautiful Shannon Braden flits back into his life after returning from a brief trip home to Maryland. He thought his attraction to her was under control—after all, she’s only in Colorado temporarily, and he doesn’t do casual affairs.

Shannon’s return to Colorado has as much to do with the game of cat and mouse she and Steve have been playing as it does the data she’s been hired to collect. But despite her efforts to explore the undeniable heat simmering between them, Steve’s intent on keeping his distance.

When a ranch abutting the national park goes up for sale, Steve will do whatever it takes to keep it from falling into the wrong hands. And when all his attempts fail, he’s left with no alternative but to follow Shannon’s guidance into the online world he abhors in order to raise the funds. The more time they spend together, the deeper their attraction becomes, and a game of cat and mouse turns into an unstoppable connection. But when Shannon’s assignment comes to an end, will it mean an end to them, too?

SHANNON WATCHED STEVE swing his ax. He was built like the very mountains he loved: strong and stable, with layers of hard-earned muscles born from honest, hard work. Pure perfection. And that hair? Lord. What would it be like to fist her hands in his hair and kiss him? To touch all those hard planes of muscle? To discover the man behind the walls? She told herself those were wants not needs, no matter how much they felt like it. The kind of unrelenting wants that bring a girl to reach beneath the sheets and satisfy her fantasies.

Down, girl.

Shannon had been surprised by how much she’d missed Steve when she’d gone home for her eldest brother Cole’s wedding. She and Steve hadn’t spent more than a few stolen moments together during the weeks she was here for her first assignment. Usually she’d catch him working on equipment, or in his yard, before she returned to her uncle’s ranch in the evenings. He’d captivated her with his passion for, and endless knowledge about, all things wilderness related. And he was different from most of the guys she knew. He wasn’t hung up on his looks or material things. He was real, with a strong set of values and priorities. Somehow, between their almost daily conversations and weeks of hoping she’d see him, she’d become completely and utterly taken with him.

When she’d been offered the assignment and the cabin, she’d accepted without hesitation. She’d missed Steve too much to deny the attraction, and she wanted to see if something might come of it.

Now that she was here, her body was thrumming at the mere sight of him. Given that she’d actually asked him about his sex life—and nearly died on the spot when the question slipped out—she desperately needed to rein herself in.

He wiped sweat from his brow, his tanned skin glistening in the morning sun. “Need anything from town?” he asked, setting another log on the stump.

She couldn’t pry her eyes from his rippling abs and his bulbous biceps flexing with every move. “Town?”

He cocked a smile and hoisted the ax again. “Town. You know, the place where people who like Pinterest live?”

She forced her eyes away, glancing at the trees swaying in the breeze, the rocks at her feet, anywhere but at him.

“I know what town is. I’m just surprised you’re going there.” Everyone knew Steve hated to leave his precious mountain.

“Gotta take care of some business.”

Going into town was a big deal. Unlike a quick trip to the store from her apartment in Peaceful Harbor, the drive into town took at least thirty to forty-five minutes, depending on which town he was going to. She’d realized last night she’d forgotten two very important supplies. Pop-Tarts and toilet paper. She could probably live with the single roll of toilet paper she had in the cabin for another few days if she needed to, but Pop-Tarts were pretty much a necessity. Besides, maybe she could convince Steve to help her scout gray-fox habitats at dusk. Perfect!

“Can I come with you?” she asked hopefully. “I need to pick up a few things.”

“I’ll get them for you. What do you need?”

She bit her lower lip, willing herself not to fib. But if she asked him to pick up what she really needed, he’d leave and she’d have to go searching for habitats by herself. Now that she’d thought about going later with her yummy mountain man, she’d already settled on it in her mind.

“It’s girl stuff. You won’t want to get it.” So much for not fibbing. “Can I please go with you?” She gave him her best pleading look. “I promise not to talk your ear off.” Fib, fib, fib! She had no control over what came out of her mouth, especially around him.

He muttered under his breath and set the ax against the stump. “I’m not making a hundred stops.”

She leapt with delight and ran over to hug him. Her heel slipped out of her boot and she stumbled into him in a half hug, half full-body-draped-over-Steve embrace. His skin was hot, his body was hard, and getting harder by the second. He smelled like man and musk, and…she was still plastered against him.

She cleared her throat and managed, “Thank you.” Using his chest for leverage—yum, yum—she found her footing and pressed her heel back into her boot. “One stop. That’s it. Promise.”

“You’re excited to get those supplies.” He picked up the logs he’d chopped and piled them on his forearm like they were toothpicks.

“I’m just excited to be back. Maybe at dusk you can help me map out the habitats? It’ll be fun to scope them out together.”

He gave her a curious look. “Haven’t heard anyone describe hanging out with me as fun in a long time.”

“Then you’re hanging out with losers, and I’m taking that as a yes.” She grabbed the coffee mugs, unable to stop smiling.

“I’m leaving in twenty minutes.”

“I’ll be back lickety-split.” With a bounce in her step, she headed toward her cabin and heard him mutter, “Lickety-split,” followed by a chuckle.

gold_review
I have read some of the stories released in this box set previously but I still loved to re-read them.  And they fit in so well with the other stories in this set.
Corrupted – A hot, sexy start to the Deathstalkers MC series.  Poor Lucy and the horrible events she goes through will just break your heart.  But the love that the MC shows her and the familial relationships help soothe that hurt.
Keeping Her – Julia and Brian have a relationship in high school.  Until Brian breaks Julia’s heart.  She takes off overseas without talking/listening to Brian.  But then 6 years later, they meet up again and they both want answers.
Fall For Me – This book is another heartwrencher.  Madison is going to college, has a boyfriend she adores (well so we think) but starts spending more time with Carter.  Chris (her current boyfriend) doesn’t take that so well and we get to see how sad and hurtful Madison and Chris’ relationship is and how much of a hero Carter is.
Shattered Innocence – Jessica is going through school making money as a call girl.  Damon is her new boss and they immediately rub each other the wrong way.  Which leads to them rubbing each other the right way.  But then Damon screws it up.  Will he get Jessica back?
Kiss My Crown – a sneak peek at a story with a princess and Prince Charming.  Or the people who play them.  Definitely will be looking forward to this one!
5 stars!
Alexis Noelle lives in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with her husband, and three kids. On top a writing career, she is a full-time student and a full-time mom. She loves spending time with her kids, although she has to hide the computer from them when she is writing! She love being active and being outdoors, especially if it involves any kind of shopping.

She has always been passionate about writing. She loves to read romance books and feels like being able to lose yourself in a book is one of the more exciting aspects. The books she loves to read and write will be ones that make you feel for the characters. Ashley believes that you should have an opinion on every character in a book whether you love them, hate them, or think they are up to something. She also believes that the most important critic is your reader, so she loves to hear from the readers. She want her fans to be open & talk to her about what they want for the characters in the story, and what they would like to see happen.

LUMBERJACK

I looked over at the ax he had on the wall. It was huge, the handle worn, but the blade freshly cleaned and sharpened. I imagined the kind

of power it must take to wield that thing day in and day out.

When I turned my head to face him again, I was surprised to see he was leaning forward, his focus on me. He was braced on the edge of

the chair, his glass now on the coffee table, and his forearms resting on his thighs. He kept his focus right on my eyes, and I felt my heart

jump into my throat.

“How about we cut the shit, Vivian?”

The way he spoke, the words he said, were heated, aroused.

I clenched my fingers tighter around my glass.

Was the room getting hotter, or was it just me?

“What?” I said softly. “What are you talking about?” God, even hearing myself, I sounded like I was full of shit.

He lifted his eyebrow at my question, but didn’t respond right away. After another moment of silence, he finally spoke again. “You want to

act like you’re not aroused right now, that you don’t feel this crazy as fuck chemistry?”
I swallowed, not saying anything, but knowing my answer was probably written all over my face.

“You want to pretend like you’re not eyeing every part of my body, maybe wondering how big my cock is?”

Oh. God.

“Because I sure as fuck have been eyeing you, wondering if your pussy hair matches what’s on your head.”

The deep sound of his voice had my inner muscles clenching even tighter in desire.

His eyes were half lidded as he stared at me. “Because I’ll tell you one thing.” A moment passed before he continued. “Red is my favorite fucking color.”

VIRGIN

“Have you ever really thought that out of the entire world, the universe, the great blankness above us, that we are just these little specks of cells and energy?”

I heard what she said, but I was too focused on her, at the way she looked staring up at the sky, at the vulnerability and sadness I saw on her face.

“It’s only a year of school before we can be together again, but it feels like someone is ripping out my heart, Quinn.” She looked at me then, that vulnerability so raw, so real, that I felt it in every cell in my body. “I know to outsiders looking in I’m being dramatic, but I can’t help it. I love—”

“I love you, Isabel,” I said, cutting her off, not about to hold this in anymore. She didn’t move, didn’t even show emotion for long moments. “I am so fucking in love with you, and have been before I even know what that emotion was.” I cupped her face again and leaned down so we were eye to eye. “Ever since I met you when we were ten, I felt something in me start to grow. As the years went on, that affection grew to what I feel now.”

I heard her gasp a little, just a tiny sound that left her lips parted, but I wasn’t going to stop. I couldn’t. Now that the words were out, hanging between us, I wanted to lay it all bare.

“I didn’t want to say anything before because I was afraid of ruining the friendship we have. Having you in my life, even if only as a friend, is what I’ll take, because the alternative isn’t an option for me, Isabel.”

BABY FEVER

I slipped my hand along her side. Being a bold motherfucker, I placed my palm right between her legs. The skirt she wore gave way, and I growled low at the fact her panties were damp. “I want to own this sweet pussy, Eva.”

She made the sweetest little mewling noise.

I nipped at her earlobe, and she dug her nails harder into my flesh. I added just a bit of pressure, but before I snapped at the pleasure I felt and took her right here, I moved my hand back up and placed my open palm right over her belly. My fingers spanned the width, and I leaned back to look in her eyes. “And every single time I take you, claim you as mine, Eva, I’ll make sure to fill you up with my cum until you carry my baby.”

She gasped.

“I don’t want any other woman, don’t want any other female to carry my baby.” She didn’t speak, but she sucked in a breath. “I want to fuck you with nothing between us. I want to be so far in you, so damn deep, that when I fill you up my seed comes out of you days later.”

“Oh. God. Dex.”

“I want my baby growing right here.” I added a little pressure to her belly and watched her chest rise and fall rapidly. “Do you understand exactly what I’m saying?”

She licked her lips and nodded slowly.

“What do you think about that? How does that make you feel?”

She licked her lips and nodded slowly.

“What do you think about that? How does that make you feel?”

She just shook her head, her whole body tight, her pupils still dilated, indicating how aroused she was.

“It scares me.”

“But in a good way, doesn’t it?”

She closed her eyes and exhaled. “God. Yes.”

I grinned even though she couldn’t see me.

Yeah, she was right here with me.

Synopsis: Folks in town call him a monster—say he’s dangerous. But I know him simply as Elijah Hays, the quiet, gentle giant who works with the horses on my ranch. I can feel him watching me, that steady intense gaze making me crave things I don’t quite understand, burn in a way that frightens me. He’s always kept his distance…until that night.I remember him coming to my rescue, me following him into the barn, giving him his first taste of a woman, and his inexperienced yet barely reined touch turning me to ash.

Now all I can think about is exposing the dark desire I see deep inside him—having him turn those dark desires on me. That low, gritty voice rasping orders in my ear. Those huge, rough hands holding me down when a storm blows in.

I want his surrender. His control. I want to break him…and have him break me…

Eli is just wow.  He’s big, strong, gentle and cares deeply about Abigail fiercely.  Eli has been working on Abigail’s family ranch for years, since her dad hired him.  Abigail has always been in awe of Eli, for his sheer size but gentleness with the horses.

Eli has always been a loner.  Everyone in town is scared of him, except Abigail.  Abigail knows that Eli would never hurt her.  And she starts wondering how his big hands, power but gentle nature will feel on her…

Eli has always wanted Abigail but hasn’t done anything about it.  Plus he doesn’t want Abigail tarnished by his reputation.  Except Abigail doesn’t care about all that and will make Eli see that.

This was a hot read with LOTS of sex!  Eli is catching up for lost time and Abigail is all too willing to let him catch up with her 😉

Blog Tour & Review ~ The Playbook ~ by ~ Kelly Elliott

playbook_amazonMy life revolved around two things. Football and my cock. And not necessarily in that order.

Being the head football coach for a top university in Texas had its ups and its downs.

The ups? Endless women to f*ck.

The downs? The politics that came with the job.

From the moment Aubrey Cain walked into my office, she turned my world upside down. Being forced to have her follow me around for a month was going to be a pain in the ass. Especially since I couldn’t keep my eyes off of her.

The best I’d hoped to come out of this was a few nights with her in my bed. I never imagined she’d be the game changer.

Brett Owens was my assignment.

Head football coach for a top college, bad boy reputation, short temper, and handsome good looks should have scared me off. But I was tougher than that.

From the first words out of his obnoxious, dirty-talking mouth, I knew it was going to be a long month. It wasn’t five minutes after meeting him, he hit on me. If only I had known his blue eyes would haunt my dreams and awaken a desire inside of me I never knew existed.

This was business. There was no way I would be tempted by him no matter how good looking he was or how many things he whispered in my ear.

He was only supposed to be my assignment. Not the man who threatened to destroy both my heart and my career. I would follow along with his playbook for now. But who would end up winning was anyone’s guess.

The Playbook is a stand-alone novel.

This was an amazing read!! I laughed, I almost cried, I raged and fell in love.

Aubrey is a sports reporter for ESPN who desperately wants to make the leap from covering collegiate football to covering the NFL. Her boss gives her an assignment, designed to test her mettle – so she thinks.

Brett Owens is the philandering hometown hero football coach. The fans, school and parents love him and the ladies would love to be with him. He has always been attracted to Aubrey when he saw her on the sidelines months ago but is determined to be the most man-whore self he can be to scare her off. Except it backfires on him.

Brett deep down is a good guy. A filthy talker for sure but he has a heart of gold. And he can’t keep Aubrey from seeing that as they spend time together for Aubrey’s article.

This story was just amazing. It wasn’t just simply a coach and reporter falling in love, but a whole relationship created within the pages of the book.

Shielding Lily

Chapter 1

*Lily*

The sounds of banging cabinets startle me awake before my alarm can go off. Rolling over to my side, I see I still have thirty minutes before I need to get up. I’d set my alarm a little earlier than I should have because I’m nervous about my first day. I’m going to a new school and have no idea what this one is going to be like. You never know what you’re going to get. Most of the time I can blend in and let myself get lost in the crowd of other students. No one notices me for the most part, but it doesn’t always work.
I should be used to changing schools by now. I think this is the fourth time I’ve moved in the past two years. The schools are starting to run together, but I hope this is the last. Only months separate me from graduation, and only days from my eighteenth birthday. I’ll be able to make my own choices then.
A sound of something shattering in the kitchen followed by a string of curses causes me to hold my breath. I can only hope he doesn’t call out my name. Monday mornings are the worst. Dad’s always coming off a weekend bender, because alcohol seems to be my father’s reason for living. It wasn’t always like this, but it is now.
Taking a deep breath to calm my nerves, I slowly sit up and listen for his movements. Things have been getting unstable lately, and it’s only getting worse. Dad used to be able to drown his sorrows in the bottom of a bottle and pretend I didn’t exist. But recently his anger has been rising and flying my way. I’m constantly walking around on eggshells, waiting for the other shoe to drop. I don’t know what it is. Maybe it’s the look in his eyes, but I can see it. I can feel it deep inside me, like he’s waiting for me to do something wrong so he can strike out.
But I always make sure there isn’t a reason. I desperately don’t want that change to come. I’m a skittish rabbit in my own home. When I finally hear the front door slam closed, all my muscles release, and an all-too-familiar tension within me relaxes.
I pull myself from the bed and get ready for school. I go with a short button-up blue jean dress with wool leggings underneath. They’re soft and warm and will help with the chill on my mile-long walk to school. It’s early January, and the Minnesota winter is raging. The more layers I can put on, the better.
Looking in the mirror, I part my hair a little to the side so more falls to the right, before putting in a small clip to hold it in place. I make sure the scar by my ear is hidden as much as possible, then I look myself over, double-checking everything. The scar is all I ever see when I look in the mirror. It’s the bitter reminder of the day that changed my world. My mom might have died in the car, but she dragged my father with her into the grave. Nothing has been the same since that day.
Now when I look into the mirror, the scar isn’t the first thing I see. I see my mother. When I was unpacking boxes last night I pulled out a photo album of my parents when they were younger. I look just like her at my age. From my white-blonde hair, to my too-big blue eyes that take over my face, to my front teeth that are a little bigger than the rest, and my small upturned nose.
We almost look like twins in pictures of us at the same age. Reaching out, I touch the mirror, wishing it was my mother. But all the wishing in the world can’t turn back the clock. I spent the first year after she died wishing for so many things. Wishing gets you nowhere.
I wipe at the tear that’s somehow escaped. I miss when I looked in the mirror and I only saw the scar. It was easier to deal with. Grabbing my bag, I head downstairs knowing the mess my dad made will still be there.
Since my mom died I’ve sort of taken her place when it comes to the household chores. I make sure everything is kept clean, the laundry is done, and dinner is on the table before my dad gets home from whatever job he is doing. Normally it’s some kind of security since he lost his badge after one too many DWIs. I don’t know how he can drink all night and still get up for work, but he does it.
I finish cleaning up the shattered coffee mug from the floor and make sure everything else is in its place. I pull a pack of hamburger meat out of the freezer and sit it out on the stove to defrost. I’ll make something with it when I get home.
Bundling up the best I can, I pray that the weather won’t be too bad when school finally lets out. I need to see about finding a job on the weekends. Maybe I can fill out most of the applications online during lunch at the school library. I’ve seen a few small places in town that are on my way to school. I can see about popping in and applying on my way home. They’d be the best bet being so close. Maybe I’d get lucky and could even work a few hours after school, making it home before Dad.
Dad will never go for me working through the week if it means no dinner on the table, but the weekends he seems okay with. I’ve been pooling every penny I can and saving it away. I feel like time is running out and I need as much money as I can get to try and get a place of my own. I want to be able to afford college next year and to put a roof over my head. I have to get out of here. I can’t watch my father kill himself. I already watched my mother die.

TBRreview

First off, I’m not one for YA almost NA books.  Since Lily was almost 18, I’ll call it more NA than YA.  But I digress.

Lily is growing up in a horrible situation.  She just wants to finish her senior year and get out of her house and on with her life.  Ren sees Lily walking to school in the snow, in not-weather appropriate clothing.  So he’s thinking about her when he gets to school.  What do you know, this girl is in his class!  He breaks out of his shell and immediately wants to take care of Lily.  Helping her get a job, standing up for her and just generally caring about her.

This was a very sweet insta-love story that I wouldn’t mind reading more of.  I love Ren’s character and how he has to take care of his woman and treat her like a queen.

5 stars!

Release Day Blitz & Review ~ Why Lie? ~ by ~ Carey Heywood

Title: Why Lie? (Love Riddles #2)
Author: Carey Heywood
Release Date: Sept 12, 2016
Add on Goodreads
Why Lie?
People here think they know me.

They assume things about me because of the way I dress and my tattoos.

I am so much more.

I thought you saw that.
So, I let you in.

You made it easy to fall for you.

Turns out I was the only one falling.

I hope you’re happy.

No, that’s a lie and you’re better than I am at telling those.

Popping up on my elbow, I watch as he moves to the bathroom to take care of the condom. My eyes linger on his muscular back and oh so grabbable ass.
He was amazing.
Ah-mazing.
Sure, we tumbled into bed pretty fast but it didn’t end up being the wham bam thank you ma’am I was scared it would be. Nope, this was something. It was new but it was something more than just sex.
He was into me and I’m so into him it isn’t even funny. Scary thing is, he’s such a nice guy even my parents would approve, and they hate any guy I normally like.
Nope, he’s different and for every night this week, he’s been all mine. Flopping back onto my pillows, I sigh just remembering how all mine he’s been.
I was working a closing shift at Lola’s, the diner my family ran. It had been a complete shit night with two waitresses calling out. I was up to my elbows in work covering for the both of them. Then he surprised the hell out of me by offering to help. We weren’t strangers; in a town as small as Ferncliff that’s impossible. Still, we were friendly, but we weren’t friends. We ran with different crowds.
He was like the apple pie he always seemed to order, where I was a cupcake covered in sprinkles.
After trying and failing to get someone else to come in, I had taken him up on his offer. I can’t remember the last time I had that much fun working. The entire night felt like foreplay. At the time I thought it was all in my head. I can be a flirt and I didn’t think I was his type. It was when he stayed to help clean and close up that it became clear he was flirting back.
After everyone else was gone, I asked if he’d like to come up to my place for a drink. He said yes. We never did have a drink. Nope, we were kissing before I even had the door opened.
He has been in my bed every night since.
At the sound of his footsteps, I lift my head. The front view is just as good, if not better than the back. He laughs at my blatant appraisal.
“Keep looking at me like that and you won’t be going to sleep anytime soon,” he murmurs, lying down next to me and pulling me into his arms.
“Maybe I’m not as tired as I thought,” I reply.
It’s a lie though. As much as I would want to play on the jungle gym that is his insanely hot body, there’s only so much sex instead of sleep my body can handle. All I want to do is pass out. Since he’s as comfy as he is hot, it’s likely that will happen in the next couple of seconds.
“What are you doing tomorrow night?” he asks, nuzzling the sensitive spot behind my ear.
“I have to close,” I reply.
“I’m meeting up with some friends. It sucks you’re working.”
Hiding my smile at the fact he admitted he wanted to introduce me to his friends, I kiss the underside of his jaw. “You can come here after.”
Since Ferncliff is a small town, I already know who his friends are. They all seem cool; I’m just not close with any of them.
His arms tighten around me. “I’ll probably be out late and you need to catch up on sleep.”
I lift my head and squint down at him. “Why do you have to be so logical?”
He grins up at me, pushing forward to press his lips to mine.
“Stop being cute and go back to sleep.”
“I’m not that tired,” I yawn.
He grins. Putting his hand to the back of my head, he pulls me back down. I don’t fight it. I settle in and, with a happy smile, I crash.
What seems like an instant later, he gets out of bed to turn off his alarm. “Go back to sleep.” He issues his command and seals it with a kiss to my forehead.
“Bossy,” I grumble, before drifting off again.
When I open my eyes again, he’s already showered and dressed. After our third sleepover in a row, he brought an overnight bag. His dark blond hair is still wet. It’s not fair how sexy he looks freshly showered and in one of his suits.
“Come back to bed,” I plead.
He grabs his shoes and comes to sit on the bed next to me. “I wish.”
Curving my body around him, I rest my cheek to his thigh. He pushes my hair back from my face, his fingertips caressing my earlobe. My eyes flutter closed at his gentle touch. He seriously has it all.
It sucks to say but before him, I was under the impression that I have had amazing sex in my life. One night with him proved me wrong and each night since has only reinforced that.
“Are you sure you don’t want to come over tonight?” I ask.
“It’s not about want. You have to work and I can’t bail on my friends. Trust me, I’ll want to be here instead.”
I smile up at him. “Okay.”
He kisses me, this time long and hard before he goes. Happily, I doze until my stomach demands I get up to feed it.
My day flies by in the way that time does and I head downstairs. One amazing perk about living in the apartment above Lola’s was no commute. I walk to the convenience store and buy a Heath bar. I always loved them and now they’ve turned into a private joke with myself. I am such a dork.
Admitting that to myself won’t stop me from eating this candy bar once my shift is over, lusting after the guy who shares its name. Once I’m back upstairs in my apartment I pull it out of the bag and set it on my table. Snapping a pic of my candy bar, I text it to him, adding that I’d rather have the real thing.
My phone vibrates in my hand before I have a chance to set it down. Grinning, I answer it.
“Hey.”
“Hey back.”
“Did you like my pic?” I ask.
He chuckles before replying, “I can think of a few other things I wouldn’t mind a pic of.”
Naughty man!
“No flirting since I don’t get to see you tonight,” I return.
“It’s only one night.”
Yes, it’s one night but I’ll miss seeing him.
“At least I have a chocolatey stand in,” I tease, trying not to let on how bummed I am.
“I’ll give you that, but no apple pie without me.”
“Ever?” I giggle.
He’s serious when he replies, “Yep.”
Silly as it sounds, planning future apple pie dates gives me a thrill. This thing that we have going is moving at light speed. That doesn’t mean it’s wrong. Gigi told me she took one look at Pop and knew she was going to marry him one day. It wasn’t love at first sight for me, but love at first night.
“Deal,” I whisper.
We say our good-byes since I need to finish getting ready for work. Deciding to save it for one of my breaks, I slip my candy bar into the pocket of my apron and hurry downstairs to start my shift.
As usual, we have a busy dinner rush. During each lull, I find my mind wandering to him. Each time I can’t help but smile to myself already looking forward to the next time we’ll see each other.
Work keeps me from daydreaming about him for too long and by the end of the night, I’m grateful for the chance to catch up on sleep. After I indulge in my chocolaty Heath goodness, I get ready for bed. My small apartment never felt this lonely before.
It hasn’t been that long but I already miss him. His scent, a faint hint of the cologne I’ve come to adore, clings to my sheets. I bury my face into them, inhaling deeply, wishing he was here with me. Hugging my pillow, my last thought before sinking fully to sleep is how much nicer it is to fall asleep in his arms.
It’s my alarm that wakes me the next morning. In my infinite wisdom, I scheduled myself a morning shift after a closing one. With Gigi slowly passing the reins of Lola’s diner over to me, she’s been having me make the schedule.
So far I’m still getting the hang of it. It seems the only person’s schedule I keep screwing up is my own. That’s what I get for trying to accommodate everyone’s requests by squeezing myself to cover all the holes. Wiping sleep from my eyes, the prospect of a giant cup of coffee once I get downstairs has me moving.
There’s already a line of folks waiting when one of our morning waitresses opens the door. It’s not like our hours have changed in the past few decades. Wiping down the counter, I greet folks as they come in. We don’t have hostesses; Lola’s is seat yourself. Most of the morning crowd opts for the stools along the counter.
I’m pouring Hank Furlong a mug of coffee when I hear something that doesn’t compute. Setting down the coffee pot next to the mug, I move down the counter in a daze.
“What did you just say?” I ask.
Aaron Daniels blinks up at me. “About Heath Mackey and Kacey Albright getting engaged?”
Oh God, I had heard him right. My stomach falls, crashing down like a bird shot out of the sky.
“They got engaged?” I ask in a robotic tone.
I’m there but not there. Half of me waits for Aaron to reply while the other half spirits away to comb through still fresh memories of him holding me, kissing me, and making my body his.
Gossip moves through this town like wildfire. There is no way I missed them dating. The last I heard, Kacey still held a torch for Jake Whitmore. It didn’t even matter that he pretty much lived on an oilrig off the coast. No, Heath was single. Unless part of the reason he had been so discreet with me was to keep Kacey from finding out.
It was nothing short of a miracle that no one clued into his spending every night this week at my place. I had assumed it was because we were new. That’s why I hadn’t spilled the beans to anyone. How could I be so wrong about him?
He nods. “I was sitting at the table next to them. Bought them a round to congratulate them even though they were both well on their ways to celebrating.”
My entire frame is so tense I wouldn’t be surprised if one wrong move would send me splintering off into a thousand pieces. “Is that right?” I manage.
He nods happily, having no idea of my internal turmoil. “About time that Albright girl stopped mooning over Jake Whitmore. That boy is in the wind. Jake’s not ever going to settle down. Heath’s a nice young man and she’s a sweet little thing. I’m happy for them.”
Mentally, I stand them up, side by side, Heath and Kacey. Aaron’s words echo inside my head, “Nice young man, sweet little thing, nice young man, sweet little thing.”
It’s obvious the stark difference between Kacey and me. She’s not the type of girl to fall into bed with. She’s the kind of girl you marry. Not once this past week did shame for sleeping with Heath even enter my mind, until now.
Heath isn’t the first mistake I’ve made in the romance department. That doesn’t mean this blow doesn’t hurt. Before him, somehow, someway, part of me always had an inkling or a whisper of proceeding cautiously. Not with Heath, though. Nope. I was ready to hand him my heart that first night.
For the first time ever I was a hundred percent myself with someone. I was happy and excited, basking in how right we were together. We fit in a way that seemed special.
What happened? I don’t understand. He woke up in my bed yesterday morning.
“Thanks,” I numbly nod and walk away.
Each step sends a painful jolt up my body. Each step reminds me of what I had foolishly ignored our first night together. He was out of my league. It seems a better option was available to him, so he took it.
The chatter at the diner only increases, Heath and Kacey’s name coming at me over and over again like attacking bees. The sting proves to be more than I can handle.
It’s not every day you find out the man you’ve been falling in love with just got engaged to someone else.
TBRreview
I haven’t read Why Now? – the first book in the series – but I didn’t need to.  I do want to now just so I know the whole story.
In reading the synopsis and excerpt, you just know this is going to be a heart-wrencher.  And it was to a degree but it was so much more!  Sydney put all her heart and trust into Heath, who ends up engaged to someone else!  And what’s worse is that Sydney finds out at the local diner where she works and not from Heath himself.
Now before you hate on Heath too much (I won’t lie, I was going for the pitchfork), he has a backstory that no one knows about.  And his reasons for getting engaged to his friend Kacey will soon become clear.
After I got over hating Heath, he made me swoon!  He realized he royally screwed up and was determined to get Sydney back in his life for good!
I can’t wait to see whose story is next!

Why Now? – Released March 22, 2016
He was my everything.

I loved him.

For over twenty years.

And everyone knew, including him.

But he never loved me back.

Not once.

Not ever.

So I moved on.

Until now.

Now he’s back, and wants to make me his.

He’s everything I’ve ever wanted.

I should be happy.

But there’s one problem.

My fiancé.
