Excerpt: From Chapter Seven

When I wake up, I know I’m back in Cooper’s house. I can smell his closeness, with the lingering scent of sex. I’m bound again, this time against something hard, and I’m upright. I open my eyes and see Cooper below me, staring up at where he has me tied.

“Where am I?” I croak, trying to turn my head. I can’t. A rope around my neck stops me moving.

“In my tower,” he says.

He’s wearing all black, his dark hair brushing the collar of his black shirt, his powerful legs encased in black trousers. I’m stunned, afraid but fascinated with him.

“What are you going to do?”

“Let’s have a little chat.” With his hands behind his back, he paces the oak floor in front of me. “Why did you run?”

“I told you, I just wanted to let my family know I’m alive.”

“But they’re supposed to believe you’re not. This is as much a punishment for Griffin as it is for you.”

“What do you mean?”

“He doesn’t realise how lucky he is to have you, does he?” I stop struggling against the rope and stare at him. “He doesn’t realise that he’s got a strong, fierce woman, because he’s too preoccupied with shoving you into a box you don’t fit in.”

“Stop it.”

“Because I’m right?”

“You know you’re right. Now you’re just trying to hurt me.”

“Perhaps.” He turns away and crosses the room, reaching the floor to ceiling curtains opposite me and pulling them open. The moon streams into the room in a thick, glittering stream that illuminates Cooper, shadowing his powerful form and highlighting just how dark he is.

“Do you know what the funniest part is?” he asks, gesturing to the vast empty countryside beyond the window. We’re up high, tens of feet above the ground and looking down over the rolling hills of his land.

“Enlighten me.”

“You’re as low as you can get, as good as existing in the fucking sewers, and yet, you won’t allow me to lift you up where you belong. Instead you choose to tower above the world when no one knows you’re drowning. You’ve been forgotten, Erin. Just like that, the people you love have moved on, because they see you as nothing but a burden.”

“You’re wrong!” A tear trickles from my eye and I watch it fall to the floor in slow-motion. “Why are you doing this?”

“You ask me that a lot.” He turns and walks towards me, his turbulent grey eyes burning into my fractured soul. “Did you know, that a butterfly dies if you touch its wings? Right now, you’re my caterpillar, striving to be something more. I’m going to fill you up with deviance, little caterpillar, make you crave the next hit. And then, when you emerge from your cocoon a beautiful butterfly, I’m going to grab you by your tiny little wings and crush you beneath my palm.”

A squeak leaves me at the sincerity in his voice. I know, without a shadow of a doubt, me trying to run has done this.

And I have no doubt he’s going to accomplish his goal.

Cooper Jennings will break me, and I have no choice but to wait to be crushed.

“You guys ready?” I ask, forcing myself to stand slightly ahead of Bren.

Shayna fumbles through her backpack and pulls out a box of toothpicks before passing the heavy pack to Emme. Emme doesn’t need her hands free to kick ass, but Shayna does.

“So what’s the plan, dudes?” Shayna asks. “Onward and upward?”

“Yeah,” I answer, shrugging when Bren looks at me. “This isn’t the good kind of magic, Bren. With all the evil set to rise, and the bad guys needing dark witches to make it happen, you know our motto: no stone left unturned, and no scaries left to chew on our insides.”

He snags my elbow when I start to head for the dense brush. “If we can, I’ll let you make the capture. It’s the only way to keep Genevieve from sinking her teeth into you. But that thing in there—if it’s as bad as I think it is—there’s no bringing her home alive, got me? I’ll make the kill if it comes down to it.”

He doesn’t think I can take her, much less kill her. And maybe he’s right. But that doesn’t mean we can turn our backs and pretend she’s not here.

I kick at the dirt at my feet. I don’t like to kill, despite what people think and despite that it’s something I’m freakishly good at. I’ve had plenty of practice, believe me. My first kill occurred when I was just a teen, the second, moments after. It was the right thing to do given what happened. That doesn’t mean I wasn’t sick to my gut. I burned them with enough heat to smoke their chests, allowing them to feel every ounce of pain they caused me and my sisters. Too many followed after that, enough that I’ve lost count. But as much as the dead mark my bones, and stay a part of me, I’ll do it again if I have to.

I meet Bren’s face. “Dead or alive, we have to take care of Savana and whoever else might be helping her.”

“Even if it means you get stuck serving Genevieve?” he presses.

He’s not asking. He knows taking out Savana is the right thing to do. He’s just making sure we’re all on the same page. “Yes,” I answer.

Ok if you’ve read the Bitten Series (you haven’t, WHY the eff not?), you might wonder how the whole vampire/witch/werewolf thing started. Well this is the answer to your questions! Although, it did make me want to read more of the Bitten Series and those couples. 🙂

I’m not one for paranormal (this and KA’s Fantasyland Series are about all I read) but this book explains how everything got started but not in a hugely “this would NEVER happen” a total fantasy way. Which is one thing I am grateful for!! IF things like this could happen, you could totally see it in how CC lays it out. I can’t wait for more!!

Exclusive Excerpt:

I am fucking ridiculous. I need to grow a pair and quit hiding in the damn pantry!

Just as I’ve finally convinced myself, it’s time to man up and rejoin the party, the door to the large, walk-in pantry opens and the bright light of the kitchen shows me a silhouette I instantly recognize.

“What are you doing in here?” Kinleigh demands with a raised eyebrow and knowing smirk.

“Uh…I was looking for the extra paper towels. Charli said Ben spilled his drink and I… Ummm…I just…”

We both know it’s a lie.

“You were looking for paper towels in the dark?” she asks with a small laugh.

Shit. Can’t she just let me off the hook and leave?

“What are you doing here?” I throw back in order to avoid answering her question.

“Wondering why you snuck off.”

Shit.

“I didn’t sneak off,” I insist feebly.

“Uh huh,” she laughs again and I feel a familiar tightening run through my body. She does this to me. When she’s around it feels like the oxygen is being sucked out of the room and the badass cool I usually cultivate totally deserts me. I know I need to stay away from her, but it’s so damn hard.

“What do you want, Kinleigh?” I groan.

“You, Kyle. I want you.” She steps all the way into the pantry and closes the door behind her.

Standing together in the darkness, unable to see her, my other senses kick into overdrive. I smell her sugary sweetness that must have become part of her from the hours she spends baking. I can feel the warmth of her body only a few inches away from mine. I hear the soft pattern of her breathing increasing in rhythm with every second. I want her more than I’ve ever wanted anything.

“Kinleigh… This is a bad idea,” I whisper in desperation.

“No, Kyle, this is a very, very good idea.” She closes the little bit of distance remaining between us and wraps her arms around me.

Without my brain’s consent, my hands bury themselves in her long, silky hair and she sighs. Her delicate fingers run over my back and shoulders and eventually land on either side of my face. She increases the pressure of her grasp and pulls my head down to her. Trying to resist her is impossible. I give in and sink into the pleasure of her kiss. Her soft lips and exploring tongue are enough to make me forget every good excuse I’d concocted to stay away from her.

Pushing her back against the pantry shelves, I slide my thigh between her legs and nudge them apart. I bite gently on her bottom lip and she laughs before reaching around and slipping her hands into the back pockets of my jeans and pulling me in tighter. I groan and throw my right arm out to grasp the edge of the shelf behind her, hoping for support, and knock several canned goods down. A few roll away, but one must have landed on Kinleigh’s foot.

“Owww!” she yells, jerking back away from me.

Then we both hear a voice coming into the kitchen and go silent. “I swear she came in here, Liv,” Ronan says, and the sound of his heavy boots on the tiled floor say he’s coming closer.
