“I had a shit day,” Valerie offered, holding the glass out to me.

She didn’t elaborate, and the curse word coming out of her mouth didn’t fit. It seemed forced, foreign.

I raised an eyebrow and motioned to my arm, trying to lighten the mood.

Tears filled her eyes. “I can see it would’ve been a lot worse if it wasn’t for you.”

I downed my glass, struggling to prevent the foreign emotions I felt. She was trying to break me with her tears. I needed her to stop, but she didn’t. I gritted my teeth, staring at her as she cracked in front of me.

“I thought I could do this, but I can’t,” she whispered more to herself than me. “Then you came along, Marino.” Her eyes lifted to mine. “You say few words, but I hear you loud and clear. You saved me twice, but I don’t understand what you want.”

I gripped the empty glass. Her words wouldn’t affect me. Wouldn’t dent the armor I wore proudly and effortlessly.

A young, innocent, timid girl wouldn’t break through my defenses. There was no way in hell.

She moved closer and touched my arm, assessing the damage. “We need to stitch you up. At least until you can get to a doctor.”

I closed my eyes. She was too close. I clenched my hand, fighting the urge.

“I’ll get the first aid kit.”

She turned to go the same moment I reached out and grasped her arm. I looked down at her, the closeness affecting her the same as it did me. Her response mattered much more than any woman previously.

She was broken, damaged just enough for my demons to ruin her if I got too close. I could protect her from the ones who wanted to kill her, but I couldn’t protect her from myself. I knew my worth. My struggles. My story was a classic, and Valerie wouldn’t be able to handle any of it if I decided to share my past. The first moment I held the gun in my hand. The kill igniting a flame. I became a demon, and no one was immune.

I clutched her arm tighter. She gasped as I pulled her against me. I leaned down just enough for our lips to touch. She moaned. That one sound pushed me over the edge, unleashing the desire I had for her since the beginning.

He held up a thumb—no skin off his back—and eyed the new app on his phone. He switched to Gaby’s message thread.

Levi: Can you test something out for me? My friend gave me a new speech-to-text app to try, but I have no clue how well it works yet.

Gaby read, then looked at him and nodded. He opened the app, waited for the program to load, then showed it to Gaby. She bit her lip, eyes flickering upward in thought, and all he could focus on was that plump bottom lip dented by teeth.

He really wanted a taste. Could that be part of the ploy?

She started speaking, and thinking dots appeared on his app. He waited for words to show up, but nothing did.

Gaby had stopped, and he held up the empty screen to her. She frowned, then held the phone closer to her mouth, speaking again, and he got transfixed by those lips again, until words appeared on the blank app screen and forced his attention to shift.

Let’s see…not sure…what food…lucky as fucking.

Levi blinked, then blinked again. What the hell? He stopped paying attention to the app, looking at Gaby, whose lips still moved as if she talked about the sky, not…

He swallowed, the off handed suggestion crawling under his skin. But it couldn’t be right. Could it?

She stopped talking, eyebrows lowered, and he turned the phone for her to see. Her gaze roamed over the screen, then her lips burst open and curved and her shoulders shook. She leaned forward, laughing hard enough her cheeks turned pink.

So, she didn’t say fucking.

Gaby collected her phone, shoulders still bouncing as she typed.

Gaby: Wow, that program is bad, huh? I didn’t know what to say so I mentioned food. I believe that was the “we’ll have turkey not stuffing” line. While turkey can be lucky, I don’t put it on par with fucking. Chocolate, maybe, but not turkey.

He made the mistake of locking eyes with her. Something simmered below the good humor, and thoughts of chocolate and Gaby and very little clothing filled his head.

He closed the app. Time to focus on their mission.

“Sure. I can definitely handle that.” He picked up a piece of the fresh sourdough bread and began to butter it. After taking a bite, a thought occurred to him. “You said you’ve seen this kind of situation before – like why they want me to be dating. How many times exactly?”

Putting a coy grin on her face that was only partly to please the press that might be watching, she leaned back in her chair and sipped at her sparkling water.

“Wouldn’t you like to know?”

He laughed.

“Trade secret?”

“You bet. C.I.A. is a clever acronym for me and my business for lots of reasons.” She winked at him. Flirty Stephanie was never seen in the wild. She thanked her years of acting lessons for her level of skill in being able to pull off the face and body language that went with Flirty since her real-life practice was quite lacking in that area. The quiet click of pictures being taken sounded a few times, then was quiet again. She realized then how much her love/hate relationship with that noise and the reason for it had become quite unbalanced and heavy on the hate side.

Stephanie reveled in the comfort of the wicker seat, recalling the dozens of times her mother had brought her here for brunch, or a casual girls’ lunch. The small grass lawn was impeccably mowed, the flowering bushes lending a lovely pink decoration and gesture of sweet fragrance. The April sunshine was warm and comforting on her shoulders despite the large umbrella above them and the cool gentle breeze that occasionally fluttered her skirt and ponytail.

Their waitress was back again fairly quickly, delivering Stephanie’s salad and Devon’s soup and sandwich. She managed to get in another coy smile in Devon’s direction, but he shut her down by looking back at Stephanie after a quick thank you.

Stephanie’s heart sped up and it took a moment for her to re-master it. What was wrong with her? The first rule in this business is to keep your feelings out. She took a deep breath to try and center herself.

Focusing on maintaining a look of total new relationship interest on her face and with her body, Stephanie guided Devon through some key body language.

“You’ll see me cross and uncross my legs so I can lean closer –” She demonstrated, once again leaning toward him across the table as she daintily picked at her Salad Niçoise. “–because I’m just so interested in whatever you’re saying.” Stephanie went so far as to crinkle her eyes up at the corners with a bright smile and give a short laugh as though whatever she had said to him was highly amusing.

Devon, not pretending, laughed heartily. “This is like one long, acting exercise.” He nodded, stirring his soup around with a spoon.

“Precisely.” She speared a tomato with the tines of her fork and gently placed it in her mouth, chewing with a smile.

Devon winced and shifted in his seat. This made Stephanie unreasonably pleased with herself. Point one to Stephanie.

He placed one arm on the table, taking Stephanie’s unoccupied hand into his on the linen tablecloth. Artificial shutter clicks sounded over their shoulders for what felt like a solid minute. Almost no conscious effort went into her coy smile and a quick dip of her head as though she were flustered to be touching him. She noted that his hands were warm and soft, and Stephanie wasn’t entirely displeased that he was touching her. Both because it was an excellent move for the photogs and because it was a friendly but gentle grip. He ran his thumb over her knuckles, that famous adorable lopsided grin on his mouth, icicle blue eyes boring into her brandy ones.

“Well played, sir.” She complimented. “Good use of the outlined physical contact.” Her heart pounded behind her ribs, an electrical current thrilling her blood from his touch. Point one to Devon.

She’s done it yet again! Meghan March has captured my attention immediately and completely! I absolutely loved Moses and Magnolia. Magnolia intrigued me in the Mount Trilogy so I am so glad to get to hear her story. Some people might be a little turned off when reading about a former madam – hey we all have a past and Magnolia did what she had to so she could survive.

Moses was the big enigma that always was in Magnolia’s mind, much as she didn’t want him there. 15 years have passed since they were together and Moses isn’t letting Magnolia go this time.

Meghan has such a way about her writing that makes me love a traditionally not loving character. Every character that I wouldn’t normally love, is a character that I truly feel and root for.

I can’t wait for the ending of the Duet!

Acting on impulse, I leaned forward and brushed my lips across his then darted my tongue out, tasting the liquor clinging to his mouth. Smoky and sweet.

Cassio stiffened, but the look on his face became even more intense than before. “What was that?” His voice was a low rasp that I could feel everywhere.

“A kiss?” I didn’t have much experience, but I doubted anyone could mess up a simple kiss.

“Are you trying to influence me with your body?”

My eyes grew wide. “No. I could smell the liquor on your breath, and I was curious how it tastes.”

Cassio chuckled. “You are a strange girl.” His mouth twisted. “Woman.”

He looked down at the dog in my arms. It was snuggled against me peacefully. Without a word, Cassio turned around and returned to his glass of whisky on the table. I stepped inside and closed the door. Stroking the dog, I followed my husband.

“What’s its name?”

“Loulou,” Cassio said, a strange note to his voice. I stopped beside him.

“Can I have a sip of your whisky?”

Cassio’s eyes bored into me. “You’ve never had whisky before?”

“No. My father didn’t allow me to drink alcohol. I had my first glass at our wedding.”

“Many firsts for one day.” A small shiver passed down my spine at the contemplative growl. “You aren’t old enough for hard liquor.”

My lips parted in indignation. Was he serious?

He downed the remains of his drink, and before I could say something snarky, he cupped the back of my head and pressed his lips to mine. Gently at first, his eyes searching mine. I grasped his bicep and stood on my tiptoes—his permission. Then he really kissed me, his tongue stroking mine, discovering my mouth. The taste of whisky swirled in my mouth, intoxicating—not as much as the kiss though. God, his kiss set me aflame.
