I tug at my favorite blue T-shirt, slightly embarrassed. I’m normally on my A-game when it comes to women, and this one seems to be besting me. “One track mind it seems,” I mutter.
“So it seems. By the looks of it, you were doing something you probably shouldn’t be doing.” She looks almost too innocent to trust, so I can’t help flipping the switch on my other skill. A slow grin, one I’ve been told countless times is sexy as sin, slides across my face. Cocking my head slightly, I wink at her. Lowering my voice, just slightly, I say, “How’s your day going?”
She stares. Her eyebrows pinch together, and she cocks her head slightly. “Did you just smolder?”
My face falls, and I feel … out of place. Am I in an alternate universe? Since when did my smolder not work on the opposite sex? Not only did it not affect the pixie, but she also called me out on it. Is my smolder broken?
My thoughts are interrupted by an amused giggle. “Let me guess, that usually works on the ladies?”
“Yeah, I think I might be broken.” I can’t keep the pout out of my tone.
More giggles from Blondie.
“How about you try introducing yourself? Maybe I have to get to know you before the smolder is effective on me.”
Uh, maybe she’s right. I’m going to have to work my magic later on some random chick to ensure I haven’t lost my smolder mojo.
Shaking off the confusion, I get my head back into the game. “Hi, I’m Ryker Stone.”

Zella is so awesome! Ryker thinks so too 🙂 Zella is delightfully quirky and I love her! She wasn’t able to be a “normal” student so now that she is entering University, she is ready to start living!

Ryker is used to being more behind the scenes and more of a sneaky guy – you find out why – and so he is completely intrigued by the excitable and vivacious Zella. He knows that he isn’t good enough for Zella but he still wants to do anything he can for her.

This was such a great, funny read and I truly loved the ride that Zella and Ryker took us on. Zella was such a great character to read and experience with her refreshing view and energy. Her energy just leapt off the page (well kindle but whatever).

“No,” I gasp, knowing it’s the God honest truth. I stare right into Tanner’s eyes, hoping he can see it as well. “I don’t love him anymore. Here recently, I keep thinking I never did. We didn’t have that connection.”

Tanner moves closer, his eyes searching mine. “What exactly do you want from me? Do you want it to look like we’re together?”

My stomach flutters and the nerves make me shiver. “Would that be okay with you?”

His eyes focus on my lips for a few seconds before meeting my gaze again. “If you want this to be believable, we might have to practice. I don’t want to be at the party trying to kiss you, only to have you recoil or look surprised.”

Everything inside of me trembles. Just the sound of his voice and hearing those words turn me on. “That’s not going to be a problem,” I say, whispering the words.

Tanner smiles. “You sure? I’m right here if you want to practice.”

Dammit to hell, I want to kiss him more than anything, but that’s the sexual tension talking. I can’t be acting rash like that, not with Ellie’s brother. Then again, he has a point. We can’t go into the party pretending to be together and not looking like we’re together.

Taking a deep breath, I get to my feet. By the mischievous grin on Tanner’s face, it’s obvious he can tell I’m contemplating it. “Okay,” I give in, “maybe we should practice a couple of things, but not today. I think we should get to know each other a little better first. We have a week before the party.”

He agrees with a nod and stands. “Sounds good to me. I’ll pick you up tomorrow morning. We’ll spend the day together.”

I like the sound of that, maybe too much. “See you tomorrow,” I say. I walk him to the door and he opens it. He glances down at my lips again and I really just want to say fuck it and kiss him just to see what it’s like, but I totally chicken out.

Something tells me he’s not afraid though. Tanner starts out the door and looks at me over his shoulder. “Sweet dreams tonight, Soph. I’m sure I will.”

Mouth gaping, I watch him get in a black Jeep and drive away. Sweet dreams aren’t exactly what will be happening in my sleep. All that’s roaming through my mind is naughty. Groaning, I shut the door and lean against it.

“What the hell have I gotten myself in to?” I can still smell Tanner’s cologne and it’s intoxicating. “I’m going to be making out with my best friend’s brother. If that doesn’t spell disaster, I don’t know what does,” I mutter out loud. What’s bad is that I know I’m going to like it.

I step into the kitchen and find him with his head in the fridge. He pulls out a bottle of Pellegrino water and grabs two glasses from the cupboard.

“Why does it matter to you, anyway?” I ask.

“It just does. You treat me differently than everyone else. Shittier.”

I follow him to the counter where he sets down the glasses and pours us each some water. “So, you think I treat everyone shitty?”

His gaze catches mine for only a moment as we both stand on opposites sides of the kitchen island. “We’re getting off topic here. This is about me.”

“Yeah, everything is.”

“No.”

“Yes. Besides, you treat me differently too.”

I woke to see a pitch-black sky. No, it wasn’t the sky. It was a cave where the air was stagnant and smelled of brine and rotted seaweed.

I was lying on a bed of sand. And there was sand on the entire floor around me.

Was this purgatory?

“Ah, the Sea Star awakens,” a rich voice spoke off to my side.

I rolled my head to the side and watched a young man, perhaps early twenties, step out of the shadows. He was over six feet, but his eyes . . . they were lambent, a mesmerizing icy blue. He was handsome, with a sharp nose and jaw, with full lips that were curled slightly upward. Light silvery-blue hair fell to his shoulders. He was shirtless, muscular abs, pecks, and biceps glistened on sun-kissed skin in the light of a nearby fire.

“Who are you?” I questioned, my voice a bit hoarse.

He stepped closer, muscular arms crossing over his tanned chest. “I’m Kai. And you are lucky I happened to be passing by. I sensed your energy and by chance, saw your body splash into the sea.”

I scanned the area and realized we weren’t in a cave. The walls surrounding us were transparent. They were made of water. It was a dome, maybe twenty feet in height and width. And if I looked hard enough, I could see things—sea creatures—swimming around us.

Prologue

Paige

Icy hands grasped my shoulders and ankles as I was lifted onto another surface. Fighting the sedation, I pried my eyes open as much as I could. The images were fuzzy, and voices unfamiliar. My vision was blurred, and I couldn’t focus. My head spun like a Tilt-a-Whirl.

“Sir, was she conscious when you arrived on the scene?”

The ground rumbled beneath me as I was being wheeled.

“She’s been in and out,” a man’s panicked voice replied.

“Sir, you can meet us at the hospital.”

“No, I’m not leaving her.” His voice was stern as his hand grabbed mine.

“How are you related to the patient?”

“Um…she’s family.”

W-who? W-what’s happening?

“Fine, sir, you best come with us, then.”

Doors slammed and sirens blared as we started to move.

Where am I?

My eyelids were pulled up, a bright light was shined in one eye and then the other.

“Are you with us, sweetheart?”

“Paige, her name is Paige.”

A warm hand slid up and down my arm, comforting me, before holding my hand again.

“Are you with us, Paige?” My eyes opened to an EMT leaning over me.

“Yes.” It came out a raspy whisper.

My memory came rushing back.

“Where’s Ana?” Panicked, I tried to push my body up.

“Woah.” A gentle hand pressed me back to the gurney.

“You need to lie back and let us take care of you. We’ll be at the hospital soon.”

An uncomfortable squeezing was increasing against my bicep. The blood pressure monitor tightened as the air was pumped through.

“Ana,” I moaned.

“Your sister is gonna be alright,” warm breath whispered in my ear before giving my hand a small squeeze. His voice was soothing. It calmed the trauma that was running through my mind in waves.

She’s going to be alright.

I tried so hard to keep my eyes open. I needed to see his face. The man who saved me. Emerald eyes bore into mine with worry written across his fading face as the darkness took me back under.

“Paige, stay with me…”
