Florrie

I don’t do well with emotions and yucky love stuff. I do the best I can, but at the end of the day, I’m better at showing someone I love them by fighting for them. That’s the way I’ve always been and how I’ll always be. And I have one helluva fight ahead of me. I’ll do anything for the people I love, but what I didn’t expect was to be fighting the one person I thought would always be on my side. I don’t know if I can ever forgive him for this or if we can ever move forward. Some betrayals are just unforgivable.

Alec
Life is going great. I have the woman I love by my side and a kid that is quickly becoming a huge part of my life. What can go wrong? Then it happens. One phone call changes my world in such a profound way that I’m not sure anything will ever be the same again. I risk losing it all with my decisions, but I have to stand up for what I believe is right. I just hope that when the dust settles, I still have someone on my side.

I’m a stay at home mom that loves to read. Some of my favorite titles are Pride and Prejudice, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, and Horatio Hornblower. I started writing when I was trying to come up with suggestions on ways I could help bring in some extra money. I came up with the idea that I could donate plasma because you could earn an extra $500/month. My husband responded with, “No. Find something else. Write a blog. Write a book.” I didn’t think I had anything to share on blog that a thousand other mothers hadn’t already thought of. I decided to take his challenge seriously and sat down to write my first book, Jack. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed writing. From there, the stories continued to flow and I haven’t been able to stop. I hope my readers enjoy my books as much as I enjoy writing them. Between reading, writing, and taking care of three small kids, my days are quite full.

Title: A Sweet Man

Series: The Men of Halfway House
Author: Jaime Reese
Genre: M/M Contemporary Romance (stand alone)
Release Date: June 16, 2020

Two men. One sweet dream of family and forever.

Gabriel “Bull” del Toro loves his fast-paced globe-trotting job, but aches for an honest relationship and the trust that comes with it. After a few too many heartbreaks, he’s nearly given up hope of finding that special someone.
Until Ben.
Born deaf, Ben is used to working twice as hard for what he wants, but risking a newfound friendship on an impossible dream is scary. After all, there’s one lesson he’s learned: everything is temporary—freedom, friends, even family.
Neither man expects the undeniable spark between them or for every moment together to fuel that connection. For the first time, a happily ever after is within reach, but they must trust that the dream of acceptance, family, and a place to call home is more than a sweet fantasy.
It can be forever.
————
A Sweet Man is an interconnected standalone within The Men of Halfway House series. It is a story about the power of love, the meaning of family, and never giving up on a dream. It includes wounded hearts, an age-gap romance, and enough cake and sweetness to give you a toothache.

Chapter 1

Mid-January

Ben ran into the bedroom and swung the door shut. He leaned back against the door, gasping each breath while clutching the cell phone to his chest. Seconds. It was all he had before that bastard came barging in to take what he wanted.
Pushing off the door, he leapt over his still packed duffle bag sitting on the floor and wedged his body in the narrow space behind the bed. He grabbed the edge of the bed frame and pushed.
Damn bed wasn’t moving.
He gritted his teeth and pushed harder, finally shoving the bed on its rusty wheels across the carpeted floor. With the bed bumped up against the door, he had a moment of reprieve to take a deep breath.
His eyes burned as he stared at the door and a memory flashed in his mind.
Once his parole had been granted, Sam had asked him to make a simple decision: Halfway House or this place.
Another stupid decision made.
He glanced around the room—at the peeling paint, dirty carpet, and iron bars on the windows. This place wasn’t Halfway House. Both houses were in Miami-Dade County and about an hour apart, but there was a world of distance between them.
Climbing onto the mattress, he knee-walked toward the foot of the bed. Carefully, he inched closer and flattened his hand against the worn faux wood. One pounding thump against the door vibrated against his palm.
Then another and another, each harder than the one before.
He gasped when the mattress shook beneath his knees.
A punch from Jake would cause some damage—he had a pulsing black eye to prove that.
He pulled his hand away. Even though he couldn’t hear it, he imagined each strike came with an accompanying yell. Maybe even a curse. Or two. He crab-walked backward, away from the door now visibly moving with each strike.
He retreated to the wall, keeping his eyes trained on the single point of entry in front of him. First day at the new halfway house and he already had to deal with bullies.
If he were at HH, things would be so different. The house owners would never allow violence under their roof. Julian would have swooped in like some super ninja and caught Jake’s fist midair.
Ben leaned back against the wall and slid down until his ass hit the dirty carpeted floor. He tightened his grip on the cell phone in his hand. The punch to the face had been a small price to pay if he still had his phone.
Correction… His lifeline.
Now he realized why Sam had to gain special permission for him to have one. Every place had different rules and having a cell phone was a violation of this house’s rules. That detail hadn’t clicked until two other residents had practically salivated at the sight of his phone when he had pulled it out from his back pocket to view the incoming text message. Like a pack of wolves, another resident had joined in. In true alpha form, Jake had pushed the three of them aside and taken the lead, delivering a punch to the side of Ben’s face that had shoved him to the ground.
They had expected him to quiver, give in, huddle into a ball or surrender his phone. They hadn’t counted on him tightening the grip on his lifeline or his speedy escape.
He banged his head back against the wall.
Bump, bump, bump.
He was tired of life kicking him in the nuts.
Tired of second-guessing every damn thing he did.
Tired of how he kept making the wrong decisions.
Five years ago, he had trusted the wrong people. Friends had used him as a scapegoat and that had resulted in a grand theft charge. The judge had shown him mercy during sentencing, splitting his time—twelve months in jail and four years on probation.
With the jail time completed, he had ended up at Halfway House while transitioning into his probation term. He had been on the right path afterward for almost two years. He had reconnected with his sister and had moved in with her. He had secured a steady job, working with Shaw.
Until the day he had gotten into a friend’s car during his lunch break.
He hadn’t known the car was stolen. He couldn’t have guessed that one choice would have resulted in a probation violation that would send him to a state prison to complete the remaining two years of his sentence.
He screwed his eyes shut, instantly wincing at the pain of his swelling eye.
He missed Julian and his partner, Matt. He missed Ryan and Shaw, the friends he had made during his stay at Halfway House. But he was too embarrassed to see any of them. Regardless of how many times he had analyzed the situation in his mind, it was his bad decision that had landed him in prison.
He wrapped his arms around his midsection. Times like these, he sought the comfort of his plush bunny. He wasn’t a kid anymore, but the worn plush rabbit was stuffed with family memories. Frayed and patched together like the sole survivor of a zombie experiment, the plush toy was likely lost, just like he felt. Or maybe someone had found it and discarded it with a cringe at its horror-movie-like appearance. It wouldn’t surprise him.
Everything was temporary.
His parents, the few people he thought were friends while growing up. The revolving door of families over the years.
His relationship with his sister.
He leaned his head back against the wall and stared at the ceiling, fighting back the tears. She had warned him to stay out of trouble. He hadn’t even had a chance to apologize to her before getting hauled away. He had burned that bridge. More like annihilated it with C4 for good measure.
After that, nothing had mattered. He didn’t care to see anyone else, even though Shaw had tried to visit him several times.
The sting in his eyes reappeared. He needed to look ahead and deal with this current situation. He shouldn’t have resisted Sam’s insistence on returning to Halfway House. But the thought of seeing the disappointment in Julian’s pale green eyes, or his partner’s sad smile, tore through Ben’s heart. He couldn’t risk disillusioning every person who might care. Matt would take Ben’s failure personally. And Julian would console his partner and share that pain.
He couldn’t do that to them.
The phone in his hand vibrated, pulling him from his thoughts. He swiped at the screen, blinking a few times. His heartbeat quickened as panic set in. His vision was a little fuzzy. Dammit. The black eye was going to be a problem. He needed the clarity. Otherwise, he’d have trouble reading text messages and other people’s lips. He pulled the phone closer and farther away, hoping to pinpoint a spot in his line of sight that would make the display clearer to read the new text message.
You didn’t respond. You ALWAYS respond. I’m on my way.
The knot in his chest lessened reading Sam’s words. His reintegration officer hadn’t given up on him after dropping him off at this nightmare of a house a few hours ago. He glanced up at the door when the bed shifted. Jake was pissed—pissed enough to hit the door hard enough to move the bed on the carpet.
He had to get out of here. Now.
He quickly texted a reply. I can’t stay here. His attention snapped up when the bed shifted again. He kicked out his feet and pushed them against the bed frame, hoping to add some additional resistance until Jake tired himself out. Please hurry, he wrote in another text before Sam had a chance to respond.
Life hadn’t been kind, but he managed the best he could, always trying to find the good in others.
But the people outside that door, in this place…there was no good here to find.
Ben closed his eyes and held his phone close to his chest, willing Sam to respond. He gasped when the phone vibrated moments later. He blinked a few times, focusing his vision, and releasing a shaky breath at Sam’s reply.
I’ll be there soon. I called Aidan. He’s on his way.
Ben’s shoulders slumped. Relief or embarrassment, he wasn’t sure. He battled with the nagging tug in the back of his mind, worried about seeing the detective again, the one who had taken the time to help Ben reconnect with his sister after so many years.
But he’d take the embarrassment. Aidan was the only man who could likely stop Jake with a simple glare, and make a few phone calls to push Sam’s request through the system to move Ben elsewhere. Right now, he’d take the rescue any way he could get it. Welcomed it with open arms, even if he needed to beg or subject himself to a reprimanding lecture.
He wouldn’t survive here.
They would eventually take his phone and wouldn’t care about the damage they left in their wake. A black eye could easily lead to a broken arm or hand if he continued to resist. Without his phone or use of his hands, he wouldn’t be able to communicate in the hearing world.
He closed his eyes and leaned his head back against the wall.
After leaving his childhood home, there had only been one place where he had felt safe.
Right now, that was exactly where he needed to be.
He just hoped Sam arrived in time to take him there.

Blurb
Navy SEAL Jason Kealoha comes to Sunset Beach to release the
ashes of his SEAL brother, who was killed in an attack in Nigeria. A Pacific
Islander by lineage, Jason is unfamiliar with the Gulf Coast shores his buddy
grew up playing in as a child. He befriends a beauty one night at sunset, as
she roams the surf, skipping shells, lost in her own world.
Kiley Worthington is on the run from a sex trafficking
cartel she stumbled upon as an investigative reporter in Portland. She decides
hiding out in her sleepy beach hometown in Florida makes sense until she can
figure out where she can spend the rest of her life in safety. The one-night
stand was nice, but the last thing she needs is a huge tatted overly-protective
guy who won’t leave her alone. His attitude is all hardboiled, but his lips are
warm and seductive. If she’s not careful, she may never escape.
But Jason turns out to be the right kind of wrong for Kiley,
as her enemies find her. In Jason’s arms she finds a true sanctuary, as well as
a safe place to hide forever amongst the white sand beaches and golden sunsets
of the Florida coastline.

He shielded
her from the wind coming from the South, brushed her hair from her face and
placed a soft kiss to her forehead. “Don’t be afraid. I’m not going to hurt
you. I only want to help. Please, don’t be afraid. I’m here now. Nothing is
going to harm you.”
Her arm
wrapped around his waist, not reaching very far, as she snuggled in the safe
space he’d created for her. Jason felt a twinge of regret that he’d been so
harsh with her. Her head rested on his chest just below his chin. He ran his
fingers through her hair, sifting, whispering things he’d heard as a child when
he’d jump into bed at night with his mother when he had nightmares.
Whatever
horror movie that had been playing in her head must have been something
frightening. He knew what fear smelled like. He’d seen women panic and faint in
the path of danger, unable to defend themselves or their loved ones. He’d seen
it all too often, and all too often he’d not been able to save them either.
She leaned
back, trying to see his face. “What language is that?”
Language?
He must
have been chanting, or speaking the circular rhymes they’d sing as kids. It had
come second nature and he couldn’t even remember what he’d said.
“Hawaiian.
Something my grandmother taught me.”
His right
palm brushed tentatively against the side of her face, and then he released her
all at once, and stepped back. His arms fell to his sides.
“I’m sorry.
It was a panic attack,” she mumbled.
“No, not
exactly. The attack was when you passed out. You are scared of something
little one.
That was pure, cold fear.” He sighed again, wanting to hold her once more, but
resisted.
She wrapped
the blanket around her.
“Are you in
danger?” he asked, suddenly wishing he’d not been so forward.
“A little.
But I’m far enough away from all that. Thank you, and I apologize how
ridiculous I was.”
“No apology
necessary. Fear does strange things to people sometimes. But you were brave.
You fought well.”
“No I
didn’t. I was pathetic.”
“You were
difficult to stop. That speaks to your courage, not your skill.”
“Did I hurt
you?”
Jason let
her fingers reach for his cheek which had now turned warm and was probably
swollen. She’d packed a good swing and the sting surprised him. He did not back
away, allowing the touch. His heart was pounding, beating like the drums of his
ancestors as she gracefully twisted her wrist and laced the backsides of her
fingers across the side of his face all the way to his ear.
He could
have easily taken her in his arms and he knew perhaps she’d let him kiss her,
but he stood like a statue, feet planted in the sand, like the surfboards
standing guard at Hanalei Bay. The wash of waves lapping on the shore stilled
his restless and troubled soul, while the distance between their bodies
remained. She had the touch of his grandmother and some of the older women of
his community–the way she used to bless his cuts and bruises, especially the
ones left by the two Samoan sisters.
This
stranger was a healer, and yet Jason knew she didn’t understand yet what her
true capacity was.
As he drove
to his motel room, he knew that, if the Gods of his ancestors wanted him to
meet her again, they’d create the opportunity. The empty tin sat next to him on
the front seat of his rental Jeep, as if Thomas was witness to this magical
connection he felt to her. Maybe Thomas was laughing at him.
He glanced
down at the urn.
“We won’t
speak of it.”
The urn
obeyed.
But all the
way back he couldn’t get the feel of her shaking body against him, the scent of
her hair, the tiny beads of sweat at the sides of her cool forehead, and her
probing but gentle fingers.
He thought
about her while he showered, and then watched moonlight glisten on the water of
the Gulf. He thought about her as he lay naked in his bed, his head propped
against his forearm.
Jason had
left the sliding glass door open a few inches so he could inhale the ocean air
all night long, which was always his custom wherever in the world he traveled,
if it was safe. He dreamt of the beaches back home, lush and full with the
scent of flowers floating all around him. He thought about the tanned
Polynesian girls he’d dated and made love to on the beach, their modest
nakedness a thing of beauty and grace. He felt their full lips, and the smooth
flat of their noses as they cuddled, giggled and whispered things to him. In
those days, drunk on the discovery of sex, he didn’t realize how the ocean, the
beach and a woman’s body could heal all those broken parts he could not.
He thought
about the girls he met in Coronado who were a bit too fast for his tastes, and
wanted everything now, hard and deep, leaving him aching for a simple touch of
kindness or a word of wonder.
Like a
metronome, the constant rhythm of the ocean sang him to sleep in stanzas
stitched together by the calling of sea birds.
The last
thought he had before he drifted off was that Thomas had brought him here to
Sunset Beach. It was a bigger purpose than the final good-byes to his friend.
Thomas wanted him to see the place where he’d grown up, to see the beauty and
treasure buried here. In time, he’d find out just what that treasure was.
As One door
closed, another one was waiting to be discovered. Whatever was on the other
side of that door, was his destiny.
Tomorrow
would be a new adventure.

“You’re fired.”

Maisie balked at Clara, trying to ignore the dinging alarm coming from the hospital room across the hallway. She’d been in the hospital for six terribly long hours now. After she’d been knocked out, and an orthopedic surgeon realigned the fracture fragments, they’d given her a horribly ugly splint. While that all sucked, the worst part was that she had hurt her dominant hand. No painting. No drawing. No creating. For…weeks? That was bad. But this? “You can’t fire me,” she implored.

“You and Amelia gave me full control of running the business, so I obviously can,” Clara said, placing her hands on her hips. “Even before your accident, I seriously doubted you could do this. Now? Maisie, let’s be real here, you can’t handle the festivals.”

Defeat sank in, and even Maisie doubted herself, but yet, she still asked, “Who says I can’t?”

Clara waved at the saline bag attached to Maisie’s hand and then pointed at Maisie’s broken finger. “I’d say today is evidence enough this isn’t working out.” Her sister’s expression softened, and she took Maisie’s uninjured hand and squeezed tight. “I know you wanted to do something more for the brewery than the logos and signage, and you tried. We’re proud of you.”

Amelia nodded and gave a soft smile. “So proud.”

Clara added, “But you’ve been struggling at this before you even hit the ground running. We’ll just have to find you something else to do within the company.”

But there wasn’t anything else for Maisie to do, and they all knew it. Clara was the brains of the operation. Amelia was creator of the beer. Even, Penelope, their cousin, had taken over the brewery tours since Maisie, well…sucked at that too. Maisie was the painter, the dreamer, the woman trying desperately to fit into the box that she didn’t fit in. “Okay, I know having the keg fall on my hand wasn’t my finest moment,” she hedged, “but I can fix this.”

Clara’s brows rose. “How?”

“I’ll figure that out soon,” Maisie said with a smile.

Clara frowned. “That sugary sweet smile has gotten you many, many chances, but I’m afraid you’re out of them.”

No! No. This couldn’t happen. Clara and Amelia had been fulfilling their end of their bargain. Maisie may have broken her finger, but she was determined to do the same. To help fulfill Pops’s final wish. “Just give me one more try,” she pleaded. “Please.”

Obviously taking pity on Maisie, Amelia cut in, nudging Clara’s arm. “It’s not going to hurt anyone to give her one more chance.”

A muscle near Clara’s eye twitched. Like, maybe a few of those gray hairs she dyed lately were because of Maisie. She finally huffed, then said to Maisie, “I don’t even pretend to know how you’ll pull this off, but fine, one more chance. That’s it, though, Maisie. Our reputation is riding on these festivals.”

“Got it,” Maisie said with a firm nod.

Clara loosed another breath and stepped closer to the bed to drop a kiss on Maisie’s forehead. “I’m sorry about your finger.”

Clara wasn’t all tough. She had an incredibly soft heart. It was just that her heart had thorns around it, ready to hurt, if need be. Maisie couldn’t blame her. Clara had Mason to think of, and being a single mom was a big weight. The brewery had to succeed.

“Thanks,” Maisie said, studying her finger in the splint. “It actually doesn’t even hurt anymore.” She smiled at her sisters. “But maybe that’s the morphine talking.”

Amelia chuckled, her eyes twinkling. “Probably, but since you are feeling better, how about I go see about getting you out of here?”

“Lord, yes, please.” Maisie had been stuffed into a semi-private room, the blue curtain separating her and the next bed. She didn’t want to be there when that next person came in.

Clara grabbed her purse off the seat. “I need to pick up Mason from the sitter. She’s probably wondering where I am.” When Clara reached the curtain, she turned back. “You’re really okay?”

Maisie nodded. “The only thing hurting right now is my ego.”

Clara’s brow wrinkled, obviously disbelieving. “Okay, call me if you need me. I’ll stop off at the pharmacy and pick up your painkiller prescription”

Maisie often felt bad for Clara. The burden of responsibility always rested on her shoulders. Maisie couldn’t remember the last time Clara ever did anything for herself. “Thanks. Love you.” She forced a smile, giving her sisters a quick wave before they shut the curtain closed behind them.

The moment they were gone, tears pricked Maisie’s eyelids. One more chance, and then what? Before she broke her finger, she had doubts she could pull off the beer festivals without epically screwing up. Now? Even she knew the finish line was near impossible to reach. She couldn’t even move a damn keg without it falling on her.

This was beginning to feel like a nightmare she couldn’t wake up from. Being a disappointment to her sisters was normal. She’d always been Maisie, the baby who always got caught sneaking out and never followed the rules. But disappointing her grandfather, not seeing his final wish for the girls he’d raised come true, was harder to stomach. She slowly breathed through the pain, knowing one thing for certain—she could not fail.

Voices stirred next to her as nurses rolled a bed in. A moment later, a high feminine voice snapped, “Sir, you need to stay in your bed.”

“I’m fine. If you’d just let me go, I’d show you.”

There was a muffled creak as the person adjusted in the bed before the nurse practically growled, “I’m going to sedate you if you don’t stay put.”

Maisie fought her laughter at that low baritone voice. Only one man would cause someone so much grief. She slid off the bed, grabbed the curtain, and whisked it open. First, she met the nurse’s scowl. Then she met Hayes’s whiskey-colored eyes. He practically filled the hospital bed with six-foot-two feet of pure, hardworking muscle. And just the sight of him warmed Maisie’s belly.

That was a problem lately. Hayes had always been Laurel’s guy. Then Hayes had become a friend. But over the last few months, something had shifted between them, and Maisie still couldn’t figure out why her heart suddenly wanted him. But there was no denying the draw there, the want, the need. She’d tried to fight her growing attraction, feeling horribly guilty, but there was no point. Her heart demanded Hayes. While she knew Laurel would want them to be happy, Hayes hadn’t acted on the attraction, and neither had Maisie. Yet. To keep things light, she joked, “Aw, you felt so bad I was in here, you wanted to join me.”

Hayes’s mouth twitched, his eyes warming when they met hers. “Didn’t want you feeling left out,” he said.

A snort came from the doorway. Maisie glanced up, catching Beckett’s bemused expression. “I told him to wear armor. He didn’t listen.”

Maisie smiled at Beckett, but her smile fell when she glanced at Hayes. “What happened?”

Hayes looked more than annoyed, his eye twitching. “After your sisters brought you here, I went back to the farm. I had little a disagreement with a horse.”

“No,” the nurse said. “He fell off a horse, and that’s why he needs to stay in this bed.”

Maisie gave Hayes a totally fake chastising look. “You’re not being a terrible patient, are you?”

Hayes set his jaw. “I don’t want to be a patient at all.”

The nurse frowned at him. “You might have a concussion. The doctor wants you to stay overnight, just to be safe.”

“Yeah, that’s not happening.” Hayes sat up, his large frame filling up the small space. He swung his legs over the side of the bed, sand falling off his cowboy boots.

Maisie took in the dirt covering his worn blue jeans and black T-shirt, realizing he most definitely did have a fall.

When he went to stand, she grabbed him by the arm with her uninjured hand, desperately aware of the muscles stretching and flexing beneath her fingers. “Don’t be stupid.” She pressed her hand to his chest and he willingly let her push him back on the bed. When the warmth of his eyes returned to hers, time stopped. She became instantly lost, trapped by the intensity she saw on his face. He slowly wrapped his fingers around her wrist, and maybe because it was the anniversary of Laurel’s death, or something else altogether, but she remembered the last time his fingers wrapped around her wrist.

“Maisie. Go home.”

Maisie stood in the dark bedroom in the empty house. She had no idea how bad Hayes’s depression had gotten, when she’d been so deep in her own. Then Beckett called and begged her to help. Now, here, with Hayes, she couldn’t believe her eyes, and yet, she understood, having been so lost herself.

The beautiful, expensive property that Hayes bought when he moved back to River Rock had been gorgeous when she’d come for the spreading of Laurel’s ashes on the weeping willow hanging over the creek. Now, without him mowing the lawn or tending to the property, everything was overgrown. The three-bedroom house had no furniture. Hayes slept on a camping mat on the floor, the curtains on the windows were drawn. The darkness of the place was near stifling.

She’d been right where he was. Until her sisters’ love brought her back to life.

Determined to get Hayes there too, she moved to the curtains and whisked them open, letting the sunlight spill inside. She turned back, finding Hayes lying curled on his side, looking thin, his hair long, his beard far past scruffy. “You’re getting up,” she told him. “We’re going outside.”

When he didn’t move, she dropped to her knees next to him. He rolled onto his back and she placed her hand on his chest. “Laurel would be devastated if she saw you like this. You’re going to get up and face each day, with me here, until we both have some kind of life worth living.”

Tears welled in his eyes. His fingers wrapped around her wrist tight. “I’ve got nothing left.”

“That’s not true,” she said, hearing the raw emotion in her voice. “You’ve got me.” She grabbed the blanket and yanked it off, paying no attention to the fact that he was naked. She tossed him the jeans that rested in a heap on the floor next to him. “Get dressed. I’m making you breakfast.”

Maisie blinked away the memory of the day Hayes had become her friend, instead of just Laurel’s husband. They’d come through dark times together, and they had history together. So much history. Some good. Some bad. Some unimaginably painful. But this new thing that had sprung out of nowhere over the last few months made her cheeks hot, and she averted his gaze. What was once friendly between them had become taut with tension that seemed to get tighter every day. This man staring at her wasn’t broken anymore. Hunger lived in his eyes. “You need to stay here,” she told him. “Let them look you over.”

“I’m fine,” he said, his voice lower than before.

Not wanting to, but knowing she had to, she slowly took her hand off his chest, watching her fingers drag against the hard muscles, feeling like touching him wasn’t all that friendly anymore. “I’ve been here all day,” she pointed out. “You can endure getting looked over.”

He held her stare. “Fine, I’ll get looked over. But there”—he glared at the nurse—“is no way in hell I’m staying the night.”

The nurse turned away, but even Maisie saw her roll her eyes as she left the room.

Beckett laughed.

Maisie nudged Hayes’s shoulder. “Be nice. You’re really annoying her.”

Hayes snorted, lying his head back against the pillow, staring up at the ceiling, that muscle in his jaw twitching again. “Believe me, the feeling is mutual.”

New Release ~ Faked ~ by ~ Karla Sorensen

Title: Faked
Author: Karla Sorensen
Genre: Sports Romance
Release Date: June 16, 2020

Every action has a consequence, and Claire Ward knows it. And yet, even knowing that her decision to swap places with her identical twin sister, Lia, for a night could be disastrous, she still does it.

Why?

Because it will give her an evening with the man she’s been crushing on for years, Lia’s best friend, Finn.

Miss Straight A Student has thought through all the angles, and knows the risk is worth it. And everything would have been fine, if Finn had been the one to show up at her door.

But it wasn’t.

Bauer Davis— Finn’s half brother and his exact opposite in just about every definable category is the one waiting for her instead. A professional snowboarder, Bauer is covered in ink, full of attitude, and has a chip on his shoulder the size of Mt. Olympus. The kind of bad boy that Claire has never been attracted to before.

Now the good girl is with the wrong brother for a night, and when the consequence is that they have to pretend to be together for an event, it’s nothing she could have predicted. But maybe, just maybe, what makes Bauer so bad, is exactly what Claire needs.

Well, let’s see … I’m a wife and a mother. If the things that I write bring a smile to someone’s face, then I’ve done my job. I am obsessed with Outlander (both the books and the show). I’m almost exclusively a romance reader, which means some people will never consider me a literary snob. If I could meet one historical figure, it would be Jane Austen. I received my Bachelors in Public Relations and worked in health care marketing before I had my babies. I hate Twitter. I do it, but I hate it. Also, if you want to get on my good side, bring me wine and I’ll love you forever.

“A virus, a conspiracy, romance, and zombies. A.M. Geever combines the old standbys to give us a compelling new story you won’t want to put down!”

– SARAH LYONS FLEMING, AUTHOR OF UNTIL THE END OF THE WORLD and THE CITY SERIES
About the Author:
AWARD-WINNING AUTHOR A.M. GEEVER lives in her hometown of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, birthplace of the modern zombie genre. She credits her love of all things zombie to her older brothers, whose influence in books, music, and film continues to this day, although her tolerance for puns and movies that are “so bad they’re good” is a whole lot lower than theirs. The idea of becoming a zombie because her car runs out of gas gets her to the gas station when she would rather not bother, and she thinks she has a good chance of surviving the Zombie Apocalypse if she can make it the eighth of a mile to Mueller’s house–otherwise she’s probably toast. Love in an Undead Age is her first novel.

Exclusive Excerpt:

High heels clicked as Kat glided down the stairs into the foyer, looking so regal and so incredibly beautiful Dayne was struck utterly dumb. For the last four days, he’d tried not to think about kissing her again. Since then, they’d avoided each other as much as possible and barely spoken. Now he couldn’t talk even if he wanted to.

Her rich chestnut hair was pulled back into a cluster of curls, and as she turned to greet his friends, the glittery clip in her hair shimmered like jewels. Her gown was just as glittery, reminding him of pale pink champagne. Tiny sleeves fell just off her shoulders, displaying the graceful curves of her upper arms and shoulders and making him want to kiss every inch of exposed skin. The dress’s neckline dipped to a deep vee, stopping just short of baring the tops of her breasts, while the rest of the

gown hugged her torso and hips, flaring at the bottom in pink waves. Dayne hadn’t known his mouth hung open until Eric’s hand beneath his chin nudged it shut.

“You look amazing,” Tess said.

“Thank you.” Kat gave Tess a quick hug. “How’s Rosie doing? Are she and Tiger still getting along well?”

“You should see them together.” Tess whipped out her phone and pulled up pics Dayne had already seen of Eric’s Dutch Shepherd K-9, Tiger, and the pretty Australian sheepdog-shepherd Tess had adopted from the Haven.

Kat shifted to look at the phone, and holy hell. He’d thought the front of her dress was eye-catching. I’m doomed. The back of the dress draped—no, make that swooped— teasingly low to just above her waist, leaving most of her back exposed. All that smooth, creamy skin called to him like an ice cream cone to a kid on a 95-degree day. He wanted to lick every last inch. Someone gulped, and damned if it wasn’t him.

Jaime unclipped his cell and began snapping shots of Dayne. “I gotta send these to Nick and Matt.”
Kade and Eric joined in, and the air filled with the snapping clicks of cell phone cameras.

Dayne gritted his teeth so hard they squeaked. “Knock. It. Off.”

Kat stepped closer, massaging her chin as she examined the tux. “Something is a bit off. I wonder…” She pulled open the right side of the jacket, exposing his Glock. “Must you really wear this dastardly weapon of death? It ruins the cut.”

He shot her an unwavering stare. “I really must.”

It was totally an accident she saw him naked.

After that, “just friends” goes out the window in favor of friends with benefits.

It’s all going great…until it isn’t.

Excerpt
Dylan was naked. In her living room.

Right in front of her.

Not in a dream, but in real life.

His ass cheeks flexed as he stooped over his suitcase, and
hisheard herself gasp, and Dylan spun around, giving her the full-frontal
experience.

There wasn’t a lot of light in the room, but there was enough.

To see everything.

Everything.

For a second they both stood there frozen in shock. Brooke
withglory. Completely naked and hot as hell.

“Shit!” he yelped, belatedly trying to cover himself with the pair of
underwear in his hand. “I thought you were asleep!”

Brooke covered her eyes and turned her back on him. “I thought you were in
the shower!”

“I was letting the room fill up with steam to sweat off a little more
water weight, but I forgot to grab clean underwear.”

Brooke swallowed, trying to ignore the image of Dylan’s penis that was now
permanently seared into her brain. “Okay. Cool. Well…uh…looks
like you’ve got them now.”

“Yeah. So. I’m gonna go back into the bathroom.”

Keeping her eyes directed at the floor and her hand up to shield Dylan’s
still incredibly naked body from her view, Brooke moved aside so
he could get past her to the bathroom. “Cool. Yep. I’m just gonna go…”
She waved in the direction of the kitchen with the hand that wasn’t
covering her eyes. “Make some coffee or whatever.”

“Okay. Good.”

“Cool.” Why was she saying cool so much? Nothing about this was cool! It
was the opposite of cool. It was…

Hot, actually.

Except no. It was Dylan, and she did not want to think about him
like that. Okay, she wanted to, but she shouldn’t.
