Finally, Kane broke the tension with a murmured confession rife with turmoil. “Maybe it’s best if you hate me.” The words were barely loud enough for me to hear, but their impact rocketed through me, crumbling the resolute foundation I’d stood upon. “Best for who?” I breathed. My emotions were so tangled that I wasn’t sure how I’d feel even if I could understand what Kane was trying to tell me. Something dark—a ravenous hunger—flashed behind his eyes just before his lips collided with mine. I breathed him in, instantly clutching his shirt to keep him close as my tongue tangled with his. He kept his hands anchored to the wall on either side of me but pressed his chorded body against me so that I could feel just how affected he was. The taste of his whiskey mouth and the press of his marbleized hardness molded to my soft curves made my head spin beyond the effects of alcohol, but it was the knowledge that I caused him to lose all self-control that liquified my insides. Kane, the unflappable man who shrugged his way through life was off balance because of me. I did this. Something about me drove him absolutely wild. While his lips were devouring mine, I ignored the part about how he hated that loss of control. When he pulled away, chest heaving with ragged breaths, his eyes widened with shock and horror. The disgust on his face doused my veins in buckets of ice. At that point, the truth couldn’t be ignored. He hated what he felt for me. His reaction made me feel dirty and wrong, and I hated him for that. He took a single step back, spun and put his fist through the sheetrock with a string of cursed expletives. White dust and particulates scattered across the wood floor opposite me. My hand flew to my mouth, but Kane paid me no mind. He shook out his hand then stormed down the hall without a backward glance.

A few times, Elio came. He never stayed very long, but he would always talk for a few minutes before he left. Other times, I might find a bit of food waiting for me in our spot with a note. The first one said Thought you might like to try my mama’s tortellini. -E

Even cold, it was the best thing I’d ever tasted. I only could handle a few bites, but oh how I loved it. I tucked his note inside my notebook and wrote about his kindness toward me. Carefully removing a small piece of a page from the back of the notebook, I responded with It was great. Tell your mama thank you. -S

I smiled when I wrote the “S,” mimicking his signoff. I tucked it next to the paper bowl the pasta was in and leaned back, enjoying the comfort of a full tummy and the knowledge that I had a friend.

Even though I barely knew the boy, something drew me here, and I knew he was a major part of it. It was a welcome, safe place for me. Elio never made me uncomfortable or said hurtful things. He just occasionally left me bits of things to eat, and sometimes left notes. He always checked to make sure I was okay. That was the way it went for two years, just little moments together, but treasured ones. It allowed me little glimpses of what a real friend was like. I was disoriented as I woke up. Nothing in the room was familiar to me. The room’s only light came from the ensuite, which gave the room a soft glow. My head pounded with pain, and my stomach contracted as nausea consumed me. Raising my hand to my mouth, I jetted towards the bathroom with the need to hurl. I retched twice and then vomited into the toilet uncontrollably. When a hand grabbed the back of my hair, pulling it away from my face, I screamed. When I turned to confront the person behind me, I hadn’t expected to see Gabriel.

“Where am I, and what are you doing here?” I couldn’t remember anything from the time I closed the door on the Rizzuto woman until now. Everything was blank. Gabriel squatted and attempted to lift me from the floor, but I pushed his hands away. “Don’t. I don’t think it’s over.” As if on cue, once again, I emptied the contents of my stomach into the commode.

I heard the water running in the sink, and then Gabriel placed a cool washcloth against my forehead. “Where am I?”

His voice was more profound than it was when we were teenagers. Yet, even though there was a gruffness to it, I also heard the underlying compassion.

“You are at Bethany Eastwick’s home.”

Gabriel spoke the words as if Bethany and I were best buds. “You mean Rizzuto,” I touted back. When I saw the blank look on his face, I elaborated further. “Yes, I know that Bethany is a Rizzuto. She explained everything to me when she tried to convince me I was in danger.”

“Yet you chose to ignore her, which is why she drugged you and brought you here herself,” he contended, as if it was justification for her actions.
