“You done drying that glass?” Zeke asks, looking over at me. “You’ve been wiping it for the last half hour.” I look down and sure enough, I’m holding a glass and a rag. Zeke laughs, “Everything is going to be just fine, Clove. You’ll see.” “I hope so. I just wish someone would come tell me something.” I sigh, “or at least God could send me a sign.” I say softly. The front door opens, and Talinda, Menace’s ex f–k partner, walks in wearing her barely-there halter top and skin-tight jeans. As she passes by me, she wiggles her fingers in my direction and plasters a smug smile on her face. “You’re fucking kidding me,” I say as I look up at the ceiling and let out a deep breath. This was not the sign I was looking for. I so don’t need her shit in my bar tonight. I watch her walk toward the swinging doors leading to the bar’s private area. She reaches behind her neck and unties the cloth around her neck, letting her halter drop to her waist as she walks through the batwings and enters the room. Catcalls and whistles fill the bar. Lucky for me, the regular patrons are used to all the craziness. “There’s your sign.” Zeke laughs. I throw the bar rag at him, and it falls short and lands on the floor. I’m about to fling the glass at his head but think better of it. I don’t need two men I care about injured. “And what sign would that be, Zeke? One that reminds me she’ll have a better chance at being his old lady than I will.” “No, the one that says he’s healthy enough to f–k, so you don’t have to worry about him dying.”

It had been five years since I heard his voice.  I’ll never forget the sorrowful inflection in it when he broke my heart all those years ago. I stood there humiliated by his words. I’m sorry, I got carried away by the moment, and this should have never happened between us. Please forgive me.

I repeat the words. Ones I hadn’t thought of in a long time. This should have never happened. They’ve haunted me since the day they left his lips and landed on my ears. It had been my twentieth birthday party and Grigsby’s thirty-second. There was something about him that my heart latched on to the first day I saw him sitting behind the wheel of his corvette as he rolled down the window and offered me a ride.

I woke up this morning and heard the voicemail he’d left for me. All those emotions flooded back, squeezing my heart and making it hard for me to breathe. I felt as if I was suffocating, gasping for every breath I took. I’ve learned to live with the hand that I’d been dealt, or at least that’s what I’d told myself after the funeral.

I was disoriented as I woke up. Nothing in the room was familiar to me. The room’s only light came from the ensuite, which gave the room a soft glow. My head pounded with pain, and my stomach contracted as nausea consumed me. Raising my hand to my mouth, I jetted towards the bathroom with the need to hurl. I retched twice and then vomited into the toilet uncontrollably. When a hand grabbed the back of my hair, pulling it away from my face, I screamed. When I turned to confront the person behind me, I hadn’t expected to see Gabriel.

“Where am I, and what are you doing here?” I couldn’t remember anything from the time I closed the door on the Rizzuto woman until now. Everything was blank. Gabriel squatted and attempted to lift me from the floor, but I pushed his hands away. “Don’t. I don’t think it’s over.” As if on cue, once again, I emptied the contents of my stomach into the commode.

I heard the water running in the sink, and then Gabriel placed a cool washcloth against my forehead. “Where am I?”

His voice was more profound than it was when we were teenagers. Yet, even though there was a gruffness to it, I also heard the underlying compassion.

“You are at Bethany Eastwick’s home.”

Gabriel spoke the words as if Bethany and I were best buds. “You mean Rizzuto,” I touted back. When I saw the blank look on his face, I elaborated further. “Yes, I know that Bethany is a Rizzuto. She explained everything to me when she tried to convince me I was in danger.”
