Coming back to Abbott Ridge and starting over was my plan. But, just like everything in life, plans change. Especially when the interior design reality tv show I dreamed of being a part of gets canceled before filming even begins. Now I’m stuck without a job and forced to rethink how I’ll start my own company.

Insert, Wade Dempsey.

Owner of Dempsey’s bar, and one of my closest friends from college. He immediately offers me a temporary job working with him, like old times.

It’s an offer I can’t refuse. Oh, and did I mention that my new boss is even sexier than I remember?

Things between us are going great…until a call from New York presents me with a new offer that has me second guessing my stay in Abbott Ridge.

Wade

Home is where the heart is.

Insert, Jaime Harlow.

A wave of calm familiarity swept over me. Being back home for good, after being away for many years, had given me doubts and butterflies. I’m sure there were some people who would think coming home meant failure, when I very much saw it as the opportunity to start something new.

“I think it’s a really brave thing you’ve done,” Cami admitted, saying what I’d been thinking. “To walk away from a secure job and take a chance on something you have no control over.”

She may have been four years younger than me, but she was wise beyond her years. However scared I was about the decision I’d made, in my heart it was the right one. Sure, I could have stayed in a job with a nice company in New York, bumbling along with no real career plans, but I needed something to excite me, something to stretch and challenge me.

And trying to get a place on the next series of Interior Nirvana was the catalyst.

Walking away from a steady job to try and start my own freelance interior design business had been something I’d agonized over for months. But the more I turned up to work for other people, the more I knew I wanted to do it for myself. While Abbott Ridge might not have had the same level of clientele as the big city, there were enough businesses and families who would want professional help when it came to design.

“Thanks, sweetie, I appreciate your support. Not everyone is of the same mindset. Mom, for one.”

When I’d told her about my plans, she had gone ballistic. Even though she hadn’t exactly been in our lives over the past five years, the same amount of time I’d been in New York, I still kept her posted on what was going on.

“Ugh, you don’t have to tell me. You’d have thought you were going to jail for a serious crime, not trying to make something of your life.” Cami screwed up her nose. “Of course, it’s great for me too because I’m not on my own now. Wade and I split up.”

“Oh, Cami! When did that happen?” I reached out to grab her hand. “You should have told me.”

Cami had been dating Wade Dempsey on and off for about three months, since I’d last been home for a fleeting visit. He was six years older than her, so secretly I wasn’t surprised it hadn’t worked out. They were at totally different stages in their lives. Cami was still all about having fun and not thinking about the consequences. Wade had more responsibilities; he ran Dempsey’s bar in town and from what I’d heard, his father wasn’t in the best of health, which put a lot of strain on the family business. I’d worked with Wade at the bar while we were in college and we’d grown to be close buddies, although once I’d left for New York we hadn’t been in contact much.

She shrugged. “We weren’t that serious really. He’s not as much fun as I thought he was going to be. I barely saw him because he was at the bar all the time.”

“Well, I’m still sorry to hear you’ve split up.” I smiled. “But was he really the right guy for you? He always was a terrible flirt.”

“Yeah, he was.” Cami wrinkled her nose. “Think about it though, Jaime. The Harlow sisters out on the town together. Abbott Ridge watch out!”

Given the plans I had for starting my own business, there was little time for going out on the town. Not to mention saving every spare dollar I had, I had big plans to buy an apartment or house to use as my portfolio for the show.

“I don’t know about that, Cami.” Stalling, I sipped my own drink. “I might not have time.”

“Come on, all work and no play makes Jaime a very dull sister.”

Ha, I may be the older sister, but there was no way on earth I would let Cami say I was dull. Maybe it was time to step out of the comfort zone and have some fun before getting down to business.

Luke and Tasha’s suggestion ate at me all day. I had plenty of time to think on the journey for a client meeting, then on the way back. At the same time, I’d browsed the local Ealynn Sands estate agent sites for rental properties. There wasn’t much around unless I wanted a one-roomed studio near the marina for an extortionate price or to spend all my salary on a massive property I’d only use about three rooms in, which I wouldn’t be able to afford either. I would have to bite the bullet and call Sara. But how would Ems react to me moving in? We hadn’t been in touch since I went to New York. But needs must. I waited until I got back to the station before calling Sara; signal on the last part of the journey was dodgy at the best of times and I didn’t need it cutting out when I was in the middle of this conversation. Standing by the bus stop, I dialled and waited. “Hello?” A female voice I thought I recognised answered. “Hey, is that Sara?” “Yes…” A note of suspicion crept into her voice, no doubt assuming I was a cold caller about to offer her compensation after an accident. “It’s Mason. Mason Miles.” A shriek down the line had me holding the phone away from my ear. “Oh. My. God. Mason!” “Tasha gave me your number. She’s moving in with Luke and there’s a spare room at yours.” There seemed little point in beating around the bush. “I never expected you to call me though. What will Ems say?” Sara laughed. “No idea, haven’t spoken to her in a while.” “Huh. And don’t I know it.” Sara paused. “It was a bit of a shitty thing to do, Mason.” “What? Tell her my plans to go on a secondment to further my career, offer her the opportunity to come with me and have her walk out on me? It wasn’t all one-sided, you know.” I don’t know why I felt the need to defend myself, given that all of this had happened eons ago. But I needed a place to live and without Sara’s support, I wouldn’t get a roof over my head. Sara let out a sigh. “Yeah, you’re right. Anyway, that’s all water under the bridge and I expect you’ve got some hot chick in New York, so there’s no need for Ems to stress.” I didn’t answer and let her think that was the truth. “About this room?” “Oh, yes. Look, Ems is working late tonight, why don’t you come around about six and see what you think.” Suddenly, I had a vision of the future where Ems and I would be taking turns in working late in order to avoid each other. But I needed a place to stay and if that was how it would be, I’d have to deal with it.

“I know it’s a lot to take in, Seth. You can contact me any time if you’ve got any questions.” Numb, I swallowed hard and nodded. Then, realizing that Carol from Child Protective Services couldn’t see me, I found my voice. “Sure, of course I will. Thank you.” “I’ll be in touch again so we can finalize everything.” I almost nodded again. “Thank you. Talk soon.” The line went dead. It had been a Thursday just like any other. Fixing cars, making plans for the weekend, chatting shit with Maddox. Until the call that spun everything off its axis, turned the world upside down, and any other cliché you’d care to toss in for good measure. My vision swam, legs trembling as I walked out of the office and back into the main part of the garage and over to the car I’d been working on. I grabbed the wrench to pick up where I’d left off, but it tumbled out of my grip clattering on the concrete floor with an almighty crash. “Seth? You okay, buddy?” Maddox Riley called from the other side of the garage. I tried to dislodge the huge lump in my throat, anything but okay. “Yeah, all good,” I managed. “Shit, you look as if you’ve seen a ghost. You’ve gone really pale.” Ha, she was haunting me already. I raked a hand through my hair. If I didn’t tell Maddox what was going on, he’d find out soon enough. I had to hope he was as flexible a landlord as he was a boss. “You got a minute? There’s something you should know.” He glanced up from the engine he’d been looking over. “Sure, gimme a sec.” I headed towards the open door, inhaling a lungful of fresh air. After a couple of minutes, Maddox joined me. “What’s up? Who was on the phone?” “Child Protective Services needed to talk to me about Noah.” Noah was my thirteen-year-old son: the result of an illicit relationship when I was sixteen with a cheerleader two years older than me. “Is he okay?” Slowly, I nodded. He was fine. He hadn’t been in the truck with his mother, her boyfriend, and her parents. He’d been hanging out with one of his buddies playing video games. For once, I thanked God for Noah’s Fortnite obsession. “Then why did CPS need to talk to you?” Maddox rubbed at an oil mark on his wrist, eyes focused on trying to remove it. “There was a car accident.” The lump grew even larger, making it increasingly difficult for me to get the words out. “Hannah, her mom and dad, her boyfriend—” My voice cracked. “Didn’t make it out. They’re gone.” Saying it out loud took some of the burden off of me, and I could at least share it with Maddox. His eyes grew wide, staring silently at me. Disbelief, confusion, anger, grief. Without another word, he pushed me out of the way and pulled on the chains to shut the doors to the garage. “We’re closing,” he stated. “I can’t let you go through this on your own.” Once Maddox had made a few calls to let customers know about the unexpected early finish, we headed upstairs to the tiny apartment above the garage. After I’d come out of jail—a six-month stint for petty theft—Maddox had been my lifeline. He’d offered me a job through an offenders’ rehabilitation program, which had come with the apartment. Its one caveat was I could never be late for work. Taking charge, Maddox got two bottles of beer out of the refrigerator, popped the caps, and handed one to me. We went over to the sofa and sat down at each end. “Have you spoken to Noah?” I shook my head, gulping down the beer. “Not yet.” “What’s going to happen to him?” I chewed on my lips, fingernails scratching at the label on the beer bottle. “I’m his biological father and the only living relative he has. I have to step up. There isn’t anyone else.”

“Remind me why we’re doing this again?” I winced as a woman literally stuck a pin into me. “We’re saving my mum’s skin,” declared Amber, my best friend. Which was why I stood in a freezing cold corridor in a thin satin slip dress, having the bodice altered to make it fit properly. “Keep still,” hissed the woman through a mouthful of pins. “I don’t want to get blood on this dress.” I did as I was told, trying not to shiver and inadvertently get pricked. Amber had roped me into modelling at the Ealynn Sands Annual Summer Fashion Pageant. Her mother worked in the hotel which hosted it, and two girls they’d lined up to model had dropped out at the last minute. So Sonya had spoken to Amber, who’d spoken to me, and before long we were trying on outfits and now being made up to within an inch of our lives. While I enjoyed fashion, my interests lay on the other side of the industry in marketing and PR. This week, I’d got the news I’d been accepted for an internship next summer with a prestigious consultancy in New York. It was everything I wanted… Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s. Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Central Park and yellow cabs…you name it, I was ready. Anything to do with the Big Apple and I wanted it. When I’d told her, Amber had been excited for me, even though it meant missing out on our usual summer plans. Selfishly, I didn’t care. One summer away from here wouldn’t hurt anyone, well, except maybe Amber. She would miss me. “Excuse me, ladies,” a male voice cut through the excited chatter in the corridor, “coming through!” My gaze fell on the waiter pushing through the hallway with a tray full of empty plates and dirty cutlery. Dark curly hair, brown and gold eyes, and a muscled body clad in the regulation uniform of black jeans with a black and white horizontal striped t-shirt. I practically drooled. Justin Navarro. For years, he and I had danced around each other every summer. Almost getting together. Almost, but not quite. He brushed past me, his arm skimming my nipples, which tightened enough in response that he noticed and paused. The corner of his mouth quirked, his eyes catching mine. “Sorry,” he murmured. The low octave of his voice sent waves down my spine.

Best laid plans and all that right? At least that’s how Lennon’s life seems to be going. She has plans to go to New York and live this glamorous life, until things happen. Lennon and Justin strike sparks off each other from the jump. But Lennon is an entitled, rich princess, or so Justin thinks, so she’s off limits. Plus she’s leaving town. Justin isn’t necessarily what I’d call a boy from the wrong side of the tracks but he’s definitely not in Lennon’s neighborhood, even though they have the same friend group. Justin and Lennon both have a case of judging a book by it’s cover and being wrong. Justin is not what Lennon thinks and Lennon isn’t what Justin thinks. A good story that teaches you not to judge people at first glance. 4 stars!

Autumn’s voice chimed from the depths of my bag. “Soph? Sophie? Are you still there?”

I scrabbled to retrieve the phone. “Yes, sorry. Did you hear that? It’s totally unheard of for him to offer me an early finish.”

She laughed. “You should have taken it. We could have had coffee, and you could give me tips for my date.”

I echoed her laughter. I was the last person she should be taking dating advice from. “Now, where were we?”

“Travel plans for the wedding. You, me, Jodie.”

And Max, I added silently. Ugh. Why was I thinking about him now?

“Max has to be there early, for the rehearsal dinner or something, otherwise he’d drive us.”

I drifted off into a fantasy of spending several hours in a confined space with Max Coady, watching him drive, the muscles in his forearms working as he took control of the wheel, breathing in his aftershave…reluctantly I shook myself back to the present. Seriously, I had to get this crush under control. Maybe I’d meet someone at the wedding who would sweep me off my feet. I sighed.

Who was I kidding?

Unrequited love was a bitch.

Of course, I couldn’t tell Autumn this. Not since she’d decided at the age of fourteen that I couldn’t ever—EVER—date her brother. I’d had to keep my fantasies under control since then. Maybe that was one of the reasons I hadn’t managed to find a serious boyfriend. Because no one ever compared to Max.

“Soph? Where are you?” Autumn’s voice broke into my reverie. “I asked what time you want to meet on Friday. It’s going to take us around an hour and a half to get there.”

“Ha, longer if Jodie’s in charge of directions.” I half giggled, half grimaced. I’d been on enough road trips with Jodie to know we needed to add at least another half an hour onto our trip time. She had an uncanny knack of getting close to a place, but not actually to it. There had been plenty of times we’d driven past where we were meant to be simply because she couldn’t work out how to get us there. “Do we have a map?”

“Didn’t you get the ton of information Brianna sent with the invite? I reckon there’s a map in there with directions from every state in the US!” Autumn laughed.

I thought back to the day the invitation pack had plopped onto my doormat. Thicker than a college acceptance pack, it contained every single piece of information about the day. Not to mention a few pictures of throwbacks to the proposal, engagement party, and bachelor and bachelorette parties. Apart from finding out the date, I’d shoved the rest of it in a drawer in my kitchenette. I was still finding glittery horseshoes in my apartment weeks after the damn invite had been delivered.

“Well, good. Because with Jodie driving, we’ll probably need them!”

When not writing, she can usually be found binge-watching teen drama series on Netflix, or supporting Spurs (the English Premier League football team, not the American basketball team!) from my armchair, and running around after her two feline children, Corey and Elsa.

Real angst. Real romance.
