Instead, I calmly ask, “How are you?”

“Better.”

A nervous laugh escapes me. “Yeah, about to be a whole lot better, right? After a cup of coffee, everybody feels better.”

He crosses his arms and then leans on the counter toward me. His biceps bulging through his white shirt. The scent of cedar and clean soap reaches my nose, causing my body to involuntary lean toward him. He’s so handsome and alluring. Vincent Goodman isn’t the bad boy like his brother, but those eyes are so warm and sincere, combined with his powerful body, he seems more like the man who would take on the worst of the worst to save and protect you. I bet it would be heaven to have those arms wrapped around me while getting lost in his eyes. His lips turn up into an adorable smile as he says, “Or maybe, seeing your beautiful face brightened my day.”

Is it cheesy? Yes. Did I just swoon? Also, yes. Do I want to act like a middle school girl who’s crush just acknowledged he thinks she’s pretty, that the very sight of her, and I quote, brightened his day? An astounding yes. Cue internal freak out.

Now time to say something back. I straighten my shoulders and smile. “Lucky for you, here you can have both.” Wait, both what? My face? Cringe.

He looks at me with that panty-melting smile, while I want to drop to the floor and crawl away. At least that came out more confident than I felt saying it. It’s not a lie. He can have all the coffee and as much of ‘my face’ as he wants.

“I am indeed a lucky man, then.”

“What kind of coffee would you like?”

“Mocha cappuccino.”

“Anything else?” I say in one breath. What if he asks for my face? I should kiss him, then, right?

“How about your danish?”

“My…my what?” I blink.

Slowly, he lifts his hand and points at the glass case next to the register. His eyes never losing their contact with mine, “Your sweet danish. My mouth is watering at the thought of licking it down the center.”

Oh, sweet mother of all. My danish is now a soggy mess, and I’m pretty sure my heart stopped. What the fuck do I say to that? Quick, think up something flirty. Think up something hot and flirty and seductive and –

“Suuure. You can have my danish to lick…” Oh God. I squeeze my eyes shut and pray for the ground to open and swallow me whole. This is painful. His low chuckle has me opening one eye to look at him.

Stop putting words in my mouth and listen.” “Don’t you take that tone with me! You think because you’re six four now that you can speak to your grandmother with that tone?” Grandmother? This sweet woman? “I’m surprised such a sweet lady as yourself has this for a grandson.” As soon as the words are out, I cringe. Oh no, no. So not professional. Lolly beams. “Oh, Natalia, you are my favorite around here. I don’t even like the hospital, but you more than make up for it.” “Natalia…wait a minute.” Two large hands grab my shoulders and spin me around. What the hell? Carter leans down so we’re face to face. “It’s you! Natalia Vasquez.” “Vasquez. And si señor. I help her, yes?” I give him a condescending smirk. He drops his hands and stands up straighter. “You speak English.” He looks me up and down, I notice his eyes linger longer on my curves. “And you’re a nurse?” “Registered Nurse, thank you very much.” I cock an eyebrow. I’m normally not hung up on titles. But he’s insulted me, and he needs to know what a fool he’s been. “Surprised?” “To find you? Yes. That you’re a beautiful, educated woman in a career for helping others? No.” I laugh. I actually burst out laughing. “You don’t even know me! Nice try at redeeming yourself from being an assuming, egotistical man last night.” “I–I– ” Lolly slides off the bed and comes to stand between us, “What is she talking about, Carter?” I cross my arms and raise a brow at him again. He huffs. “Last night there was a fire at Natalia’s apartment.” “My goodness, Natalia! Are you all right, sweetheart? How frightening.” Lolly turns back to her grandson, “But what did you do? You saved her, right?” Firefighter Douche puffs out his strong chest, “Yes, I did.” He narrows his eyes at me. “I saved her.” He looks back at his grandmother. “Then I tried to check on her and she wouldn’t speak to me. She would only address the EMT in Spanish,” he cuts his eyes to mine, “so how was I supposed to know she knew any English? Who does that?” He turns around and smiles. “I figured I’d see you today with the bridal shower. Thought you’d get a kick out of them. My citizen’s arrest and all.” “You’re unstable. You need help.” He gives me a bored expression and shrugs, then turns around and begins walking again. “Are you forgetting something?” I hold my wrist up what little I can. “No. I’m not the one forgetting anything, but you are. You seem to have forgotten our mutual agreement. I expect you to uphold your end of the deal. Pop off at me again like that and you’ll have worse consequences.” “You’ve got to be kidding? You really are an ass.” He shakes his head and puts on his sunglasses. “I’m sorry,” I sneer. “You’re not sorry, yet.” I watch in horror as he walks to the clubhouse and shuts the door behind him. What a prick! A fucking deranged prick. I look around feeling humiliated. I struggle to open my car door, but I can’t get in with how my wrist is handcuffed through the window. I end up just crawling through it. I can’t reach my bag with my phone in it, so I press the handless call button on my steering wheel. “Call Trent.” “Calling Trent,” my car announces. I patiently wait for him to answer my call. Thankfully, he does. “I need your help, but you can’t tell anyone.” Long pause. Then he asks, “Denise, what kind of trouble are you in?” “I’m handcuffed.” Another long pause before he replies, “Denise, where exactly are you handcuffed and to what?” “My wrists are handcuffed to my steering wheel.
