I’ve wanted Mitch since the day we met.

But the broody ex-Marine was the one man I could never have.

I’m not a girl who believes in fairytales. I’m no princess, and there’s never going to be a handsome prince coming to my rescue.

I don’t deserve it—not after all the hurt I caused.

So I tried to stay away, ran whenever he got too close. It wasn’t enough.

Mitch wouldn’t take no for an answer. He chased me until I gave in. Made me let go, break all my rules, and drop my defenses. He made me feel things I’d never felt before.

Our love was all consuming.
Our lives forever changed.

Are we finally ready to give up our hearts? Or will the wounds from our pasts continue to tear us apart?

Goodreads Review – “Playing Hard To Get is really good. Love the push/pull between Vivian and Mitch, the exciting suspense, and the emotional drama these two have.”

Paperbeautiful – “The book was emotional with both main character’s trying to overcome issues in the past and had a bit of suspense to it as well.”

Goodreads Review – “This story is a great read and I would thoroughly recommend it.”

My eyes were on the floor in front of me, watching the twinkling lights along the baseboards as they guided my way. I was nearly in front of him before my mind picked up what my body already knew.

“You come to find me, darlin’?”

I stopped dead in the center of the hall. Mitch was leaning against the wall, hands in his pockets, foot tucked up behind him. Relaxed. Like he didn’t have a care in the world. I chanced a glance behind me, saw that I was out of the line of sight of everyone at the party, then gauged my ability to run in my four-inch heels. But no. My body dragged me forward as my mind screamed to go the other way.

“Mitch.” I stopped in front of him and flinched when his fingers glided across my cheek. “Where are your new girlfriends?” I asked, summoning some of that rage with the thought of Kimber’s hands on him.

He grinned. Wicked. God, he was gorgeous. “You jealous?”

I shrugged. A lie. “You can do whatever you want.”

“Yeah?” His hands were on my hips before the word was out of his mouth. “Whatever I want?”

“Mitch.” I grabbed his hands, making a feeble effort to rid my body of his touch. But I couldn’t. The pull was too strong. My hands rode the storm up his arms to his shoulders.

“What if I want you?”

“I can’t.” A whimper escaped my throat when his lips touched my jaw. It urged him on. “Please, don’t. I can’t control this.”

He stilled but didn’t pull away. His breath flitted across my neck, like waves lapping at the shore. “Let go, darlin’. Let me take control. Let me give you what you need.”

I forced myself away, leaned my back against the wall, putting distance between us. “I can’t do that to Frankie.”

“Stop worrying about Frankie,” he said, close to my ear. “Worry about Vivian. Worry about me, and how I make you feel. I want to make you come.”

A bitter laugh broke free. “In your dreams.” Definitely in mine.

“Give me a chance, Viv.” Mitch pulled back, pacing the four feet to the bathroom door and back. He leaned in close and his breath whispered across my face. “Give me one chance. If I don’t make you come, I’ll leave you alone.”

No. I didn’t want this. Didn’t want to be with him. Didn’t want to be without him.

The door to the bathroom opened. Mitch stepped back before the woman’s face cleared the door. I didn’t know her, but it was obvious Mitch had made her acquaintance. He nodded and gave her a smoldering smile. The blush across her cheeks was evident, even in the dim light in the hall, and my eyes followed her as she walked away, back to the party. Mitch’s finger hooked my hand, tugging my attention to him.

“One chance, darlin’.”

One chance. One last time with him before he left me alone. God, I wanted it and I didn’t. He took a step backward, toward the bathroom.

One chance.

Right here.

My body wouldn’t say no.

We connected in an instant.

Fell the moment we met.
Lived in a fantasy world where our bodies became one and nothing else existed.
But when reality intruded, that world came crashing down.
Life beyond the walls I’d sequestered myself behind summoned me, and I knew things would change.
There were things I hadn’t told him. Things that would change the way he looked at me. But as the truth came out, my world went to war against my greatest enemy, and it was his secrets that put everything that mattered most at risk.
The question was, would we both make it through unscathed, or would one of us have to make the ultimate sacrifice?

“Diesel?” My voice wavered between whisper and yell, and his head snapped up in surprise.

Blue the color of the bright spring sky sparked with life as those eyes took me in. The corners of his lips twitched into an almost-smile before he wiped it away with his fist. “Mornin’.” His voice was gruff, full of gravel and not enough sleep. The way it rasped out across his lips made my wobbly knees shake. “How’d ya sleep?”

My gaze dropped to the floor and I turned my face from his as I tucked a strand of hair behind my ear. “Umm, okay,” I said, telling him a partial lie. “And you?”

In answer, he rose from his chair, his long, lean body hovering over me. His eyes searched mine, darting back and forth as if by doing so he could find the truth. “Don’t believe you.”

“Excuse me?”

He gripped my chin between his thumb and finger, guiding my face to be aligned with his. “I. Don’t. Believe you.”

Scowling, I ripped my chin from his grasp. I spun on my heel and pulled open the fridge. “How would you know?”

The heat from his body followed me. Every hair on my head seemed to stand on end. With a hand on the door next to mine, he leaned in, his chest brushing my shoulder as he reached for the milk. “Heard you from my room,” he whispered against my ear, his lips brushing my lobe. “Heard every scream and whimper. Took everything in me not to rush back to your side.”

“Why would you care?” I brushed him away, stepping far from his grasp. My gaze hit the melting snow out the window as I stood at the kitchen sink.

Again, that heat followed me. Again, the hairs rose on my head. Like the days of old, Diesel’s hands came to rest on my hips. He pulled my ass into his body, and for one second a thrill raced through me at the thought that he would take me from behind.

Instead, he leaned down over my shoulder, those hands smoothing over my hips. “It’s my job to care.”

“You son of a—” My palm flew at his cheek and landed with a crack. His face flew to his right, that cheek blazing red. I pulled my palm to my open mouth and tried to stifle my gasp.

Those bright, bright eyes sparkled like gems as he turned them back my way. His nostrils flared and he gave a single nod. Then, without warning, he scooped me up and set my ass on the counter with a thud. He pressed his way closer, those slim hips sliding between my legs, those hard abs nudging against my core.

“Don’t need you to like me,” he whispered into the crook my neck as his nose trailed along my flesh. And God, a tingly sensation zinged down my skin, meeting up with his long, hard length where it prodded between my legs. I grasped him as he rocked into me, holding on to those strong shoulders, my legs tightening around him as my body lit up. “An’ I don’t need to like you. But we’re stuck together, so you best let it go. Got that, darlin’?”

The fire between us ignited. But as the walls burned down around me, I’d be forced to choose between the life I’d always known, and the love of my life.
Natalia stood in my way at the door, arms crossed at her chest. She was all power and authority, head held high like a princess. ’Cept the way she looked, her breasts pressed high, the dip between them on display like a gold medal prize? Took all I had not to drink her in. Not to rake my gaze over every last inch of her skin. The swell of her breasts. The smooth curve of her hips. That little pucker of her button bared at her midriff, just begging to be kissed.
My mouth dried up and my tongue grew thick. My body reacted with a twitch. Blood rushed south and my fingers itched to touch the fire that blazed deep in her eyes.
But I didn’t.
Couldn’t.
It was a hazard I couldn’t touch.
Trouble.
From day one, she was trouble.
My hair stood on end as I inched past her. Caught her gaze as she dragged her eyes up from my chest, but I pushed on, rushing past.
“You think I’m scared of you?” she questioned, voice like a bulldog as she chased me down the hall.
I stopped.
Turned.
Took a step backward into the wall as she pushed into my space.
“Nah, baby girl. You ain’t scared of no one but yourself.”
She took a step closer, hand pressed against my chest, shoving me into the cold cement. “What’s that supposed to mean?” she said on a scowl.
“Means whatever you need it to.”
She narrowed her eyes and I leaned toward her face. “You stand there looking down at me, judging from your tower? Pretending you ain’t got desire in your heart? I see you, little bird. You running scared from anything you can’t control.” My thumb dragged across her full bottom lip as a war raged behind those dark blue eyes.
Her lips parted. Her eyes closed. She sucked in a sharp breath.
Quick as a flash, her whole being awoke. She pulled back, swinging her fist at my face. I knocked it away, but she swung again. The back of her hand collided with my cheek, stunning me but not hurting too much. She swung again, harder this time. My hand caught hers, twisted her in her place. I swept my foot out, catching the leg that held her grounded to the floor.
Her tower toppled.
She began to fall.
I’d never let her break.
I pulled her back against my chest, one arm locked tight around her waist, my other arm pinning her arms across her chest. She squirmed. Raged. Energy crackled and snapped like electricity across a line. Her breath heaved, then held.
Her body melted against my own.
Felt every curve and swell as her heated body melded to mine. Felt that tension fade, the electricity sparking and holding strong. Felt the throb and twitch in my jeans against the tight curve of her ass. Felt her heartbeat pound out a steady beat against my chest.
I raised a shaky hand to her chin, tilting her face toward mine as I skimmed the tip of my nose along her cheek. Her quiet breaths came quick, her body leaning on me like she’d lost her strength. My lips brushed her skin, the taste of her so close.
“Don’t you worry, baby girl,” I whispered against her cheek, the tip of my tongue licking her sweat from my lips. “I’ll be here to catch you when you fall.”
She shuddered in my arms. Quick as it left her, that tension made a rebound. Shaking through her, rising up, an inferno devouring everything soft. It exploded out of her, her hands tearing at my skin as she made her escape.
Cold, cold eyes locked on mine. Her chest heaved, her face giving an angry twitch. Hands shoved hard at my chest and her gorgeous voice gave a quake as it tore through her throat. “Get away from me!”
She spun.
Ran, head down as she fled.
Like she couldn’t get away fast enough.

I shook my head, watching her go. Called after and her body jumped. “You keep pushing ever’body away, little bird, eventually there ain’t gonna be nobody left.”
