Excerpt

I flopped around until I really, really wanted a glass of water. Or a bottle. Just anything to get me hydrated. I stood and went to my door, squeaking it open slowly. No one told me I had to stay in my room, but that was a sense I was getting. I should be settled for the evening. Rocket the dog was nowhere to be found, so I assumed she was with one of the family members. The young cat that Gaze and Pixie had claimed was theirs was on the couch and covered his eyes with his paws when I walked past him. In the kitchen I had to open three different cabinets until I found some glasses. They were all special liquor glasses. Wine, rocks, beer glasses—they would suffice, but their normal cups weren’t in an obvious spot. I went to the fridge and skipped the ice so I wouldn’ make a racket. When my glass was halfway full, a person lurking in the doorway caught my eye. I started and my hand jumped, the glass shooting up out of my hand. Teddi lurched forward and put out her hand. I did the same. I managed to get a grip on the glass as Teddi’s arm swung wildly and she poked me in the eye with her pinkie. “Oh shit.” I slapped my left hand over my throbbing eye while catching the glass with my other hand. “Oh my God. I am so sorry. Are you okay? It felt like I stuck my finger in Jell-O right then.” She shivered and closed her eyes. I opened my other eye while squeezing the injured one tightly. “It’s okay. I have two. And I like a challenge.” “Seriously? Like, I can drive you to Urgent Care or wherever. You might have a scratched cornea and that blows. I hated when it happened to me.” “Someone poked you in the eye in the middle of the night?” “No. I had an accident in cheer. Our bottom was a little off her game and I wound up knowing what four inches of her finger felt like in my brain.” “Man, that’s not the sentence I want to hear wrapped around the words of four inches of finger in.” I staggered over to the counter and set down my glass. “What did you want to hear?” She was smokin’. Forcing me to tell her about my dirty mind. “Nothing. No worries. Why are you up in the middle of the night?” I slumped against the counter. “It’s time for my two a.m. fudge bar.” She moved to the freezer part of the fridge and yanked it open. She had the ice cream she sought set up like a dispenser. She plucked out a cold one and had the paper off of it in a practiced motion. Here I was feeling spoiled for having water from the dispenser. Girlfriend had her own private ice cream truck in her kitchen. “You set an alarm for that or something?” I lifted my chin in her direction. “It’s a built-in notification” She tapped her temple with her phone. “How’s your room downstairs?” Stupid luxurious. Spacious. Private. Alone. Sad. “Great. Bed’s a little soft.” I attempted to open my poked eye. Couldn’t do it. I watched as concern zipped her smile into a straight line. “You really might have some damage there.” She took a step toward me. If she only knew. The damage I had and the damage I intended to do. “Let me see.” She popped the whole ice cream into her mouth and clamped her lips around it. Then she was in my space on her tiptoes. She put her hands on my face like we’d known each other our whole lives. I flinched a little and she settled a hand behind my neck. She pried my closed eye open with her fingers. In the meantime, she made sucking noises around the ice cream. It seemed like she might actually be in distress, so I grabbed the Fudgsicle out of her mouth. She licked around her lips and squinted some more. “I can’t tell crap. It’s too dark.” She stepped back and took her ice cream from my hands. She did some very thorough licking of the melting parts as she made her way to the light switch. She turned it on and returned to me. “I need to set this down.” She opened the cabinet next to my head and took out a bowl, setting the fudge bar in it. Then she resumed her position and clamped onto my neck and eye again. “Sorry, I am so used to being in people’s personal space between makeup and cheer.” She seemed to be apologizing for putting her chest against me and blowing her sweet breath onto my face. It was all making things happen in my pants. Too much. As she looked intently at my eye, interrogation-style, I had to stare at her. She had to be the prettiest human I’d ever seen in person. Her eyes were set up like blue starbursts and her skin was beautifully smooth. I wanted to lick it like she was my ice cream treat. She let go of my eyelid and it snapped shut. “It’s red and bloodshot.” She pointed to the kitchen chair. I lumbered over and sat down, grateful for a place to hunch over my growing problem. Teddi went back to the freezer and came back with a cold pack. “Tilt your head back a little.” I did as she asked again, and she straddled my leg, again holding my neck. Sure, my eye felt like it still had her finger in it, but all this closeness was really having me and my pants hoping she was going to kiss everything and make it better. She gently pressed the ice on my closed eye. “Keep it closed. The eye really does heal itself a lot. You just need to give it time.” I grunted in acknowledgment. As I peered at her through my working eye, she rooted around in the kitchen. Her tiny sleep shorts and tank top were my own personal cable channel. She used the water from my glass—whatever was left—and then refilled a water bottle with a straw in it. “Here, now you can drink easier while your eye does what it has to do.” She held the bottle near my face. I took it out of her hand. “Thanks. You send mixed messages to weirdos in your kitchen. Attack, first aid, apply water.” I took a deep suck and realized I was super thirsty. She went back to her ice cream and opened a drawer until she came up with a spoon. Her snack had become a cold soup and she ate it as such. I hit the bottom of the bottle with a loud slurp. Teddi grimaced. “Damn, son. You were parched.” She grabbed my bottle and filled it again. The little kindnesses she was showing me were getting embedded into my skin. Where I was from, how I was raised, kindness was hard to find. I could go whole days without getting treated like a person by anyone besides my mom. “Thank you.” “You’re welcome. And I’m sorry I turned you into a pirate. The good news is, I have an eye patch from last Halloween for you.” She pointed at my eye with her spoon. “Then I’m all set.” I was able to get half the second water bottle down before I was truly done with feeling thirsty.

BLURB:

… he walked a tightrope five stories up just to hold my hand.

Gaze: I moved into the building next to Pixie when I was eleven. She blew bubbles through my window. I shot my Nerf gun through hers. We both had secrets, but one of us was fated to get hurt. I wanted it to be me.

Pixie: When I was afraid of the dark, he would shine a light in my window. We shared our popsicles and I taught him how to get a good swing on the playground. I never imagined I’d have to decide who got to live and who didn’t. I chose him –and he could never know.

She walked a tightrope five stories up just to save my life…

Short excerpt:

The ache in my chest hurt again. I didn’t know how to be me without her.

Medium excerpt:

And then he came in for the kiss. It was him and I was so used to him, but in a totally different way. A new way. Changing everything and realizing that nothing really had to change. He was already mine. His kiss was just ours. Incredibly different from the accidental kiss when we were kids.

His lips tasted good. Slow and gentle, but my heart was racing so fast. He stopped and checked my eyes. I nodded slightly. I was good. This was good. He was making my mouth mine, letting me be the one that decided to be kissed. And then I wasn’t thinking anymore.

I was just a girl kissing a boy and free falling into the beauty of permission.

Long Excerpt:

I wanted to go find Pixie

There was no hiding at my height now. In my next class, Ashlin sidled close. “Hey, you wanted to see Pixie? You’re going to see a lot of her soon.”

If she was superman she couldn’t have timed it better because the fire alarm went off. I followed the flow out the door, the teachers closing doors and flicking out lights. I didn’t like how Megan and Ashlin snickered with each other.

They gathered near a group of girls that all had their phones out. Their attention was pinned on a door like they were cats ready for a mouse to pop out.

It was cold outside. I stood near my last class, but it was more a loose cluster. When the door finally popped open, the fire alarm was starting to give me a headache.

The spoils of mean laughter made me grit my teeth. I’d been bullied enough to know that that particular noise was always accompanied by someone else’s pain.

Her hair was shorter than when we were kids, but her face was an instant balm to my raw heart. Pixie.

But I went from calm to confusion. My normally gutsy Pixie looked like she was trapped in her worst nightmare. She hung her head for a few beats of the alarm. Flashes went off. The crew of girls snapping pictures.

Pixie was hugging her body and I realized why with a gasp. She was only in a pair of underwear. She was topless and hugging her breasts as a way to cover herself.

I jumped through the kids in front of me, using their shoulders to hold myself up and swing my long legs through. I flat out sprinted to get to Pixie, peeling off my basketball jacket from my old school as I moved. I covered her from the front, pulling the arms behind her back.

She looked up in my eyes. Her confusion and relief collided.

I slipped my sweat pants off and held them out to her feet. She stuck them in one and at a time and then jumped so I could yank them up the rest of the way.

The world swirled around us, blurry and useless. I used the time to cuddle her to me, holding the jacket closed while she wiggled her arms inside. I leaned over her and snapped up the back. She was covered.

“Gaze?” She held up her hand, well it was her hand but it was dwarfed by the extra fabric of my long jacket on her. She almost touched my face before squinting. “You can’t be?”

I watched as her soul knew what her brain refused to come to terms with.

“I am. It’s me and I’m back.”

Teachers came into our orbit, asking questions. The snide assholes were there too, but the pictures and video continued, I saw it in my peripheral. I’m sure my boxer briefs were super exciting.

Pixie pushed on my chest. “Are you cold?”

“No.” It was her. I could still smell her strawberry shampoo and tsee the small dusting of freckles on the bridge of her nose. They were my own personal constellation that I’ve always wished on a million times.

Have Mercy!! Because I’m sure no one says that in their reviews. But I said it anyway.

This isn’t like the happy go lucky, pee your pants laughing Debra Anastasia book you’re used to. But this book grips you and pulls you in. Becca and Nix’s story is deep and dark and dramatic.

We meet Nix and Becca as kids and find out how Becca saves Nix. And Becca makes a lasting impression on Nix. So much so that he still remembers her to the present day. He looks drastically different from when he was a kid. But dear lord is he sweet! Yes, he is a bad mamma-jamma but he’s also so freaking sweet. The “scary” appearance he gives is just hiding his sweet sweet nature and heart. The bad boy with a heart of gold for sure. So swoon-worthy!

I can’t wait for Animal! He and Nix friendship is seriously friendship goals.

“I bet you were adorable.” He put his knuckle under her chin and encouraged her to lift her head. She rolled back over and settled against his shoulder.“I don’t want to be adorable. I want to be impossible.”

“How do you mean?” He kissed her forehead.

“I want to be impossible for you to forget, impossible for you to keep your hands off of.” She leaned up for a kiss.

“You’re my impossible then. Have no fear.” He tenderly reminded her he was her impossible, too, with his lips.

She put her hand against his stomach and snuggled in. “This is my spot. Right here. With you—it’s home.”

He swallowed before talking to the ceiling. “My heart was like a fist. Where I am? It’s not a place you plan to survive. I’ve been there for years, and it’s not about skill; it’s not even about luck. You get strapped into a machine, and fate’s driving. You can’t get out even if you want to. So you submit to it. You harden your soul. You get ready to die.”

He shifted, rolling on top of her. She sighed in contentment. Being beneath him made her feel safe and secure.

He kissed her lips, then the tip of her nose, before continuing. “But with you, it’s like my heart’s opening up, and I’m terrified to feel, after all this time. Yet I don’t have a choice. No matter where I am, I draw your face whenever I get a scrap of paper.”

He laughed a little. “We found a puppy, and I named it Fallen, just so I could say your name over and over. The guys think I’m crazy—such a strange name for a dog. But I don’t care. I’m gasping for you every moment I’m awake. And I’m making choices to keep me alive through the week.”

His eyes searched hers. “What if I’m not as tough as I was in the beginning? God, I hope no one is affected by my distraction with this. But in the end there’s you. Only you. Do what you have to to get back to me when you’re awake. You have to. I need you more than air, more than life right now. The softness of you, the tenderness in your eyes when you see me. I’m trying to force fate to throw me in your direction. To hurl me at you somehow. I don’t know if it will work. But I’m praying for it.”

Fallen touched his face, then his neck. “I will do everything I can to find you.”

TBRreview

Ok going in to this, the last Debra Anastasia book I read was Booty Camp Dating Service. This book is NOTHING like that. In just reading the foreword, you are struck by the poignancy of this book as this was written as a tribute to her uncle. And I knew this was going to make all the feels happen.

I’m not one for time travel in my books but this was relevant and wasn’t silly in the theme of the story. This book kinda reminded me of The Lake House in a way in that there’s time travel and a relationship that transcends time and location.

My review will not do this book justice, you just need to read it and experience it for yourself. No, it’s not the hysterically funny you would expect but that makes it stand out more.

5 stars!

Booty Camp Dating Service is a wildly successful matchmaking company. The twist? Well, Wolf Saber –who inherited his gift– is NEVER wrong when he matches people. It’s a gift passed down from his grandmother to his mother to him.

He’s sexy but stays behind the scenes, letting his buddy Chance do all the talking while he matches the clients at parties and events. Booty Camp Dating Service travels the country, and nine months after they leave the city there’s always a flurry of weddings and an accompanying baby boom. Booty Camp claims that clients will be 110% satisfied and they deliver on that promise every single time.

Except Wolf refuses to deliver on that guarantee for himself. He doesn’t find love until Hazel Lavender’s best friend pushes her through his front door. Now all he wants to do is make sure Hazel is 110% satisfied…in his bed. Which, ironically, would break the very rules Wolf demands of his employees–no dating clients, ever.

So instead, Wolf and Hazel fight. And kiss. And fight some more.

Will Wolf’s own rules make him the very first Booty Camp Happily Never After? (Booty Camp Dating Service is a STAND ALONE!)

BC Excerpt

Excerpt #1

Wolf pulled her close so her chest was pressed into his and used his other hand to throw everything off his desk, including the light. It tossed interesting shadows around the room, but her magnificent face was highlighted, and that was exactly what he needed. He kissed her while laying her gently back on the desk.

“Hey.” Hazel stopped him, and he waited to see what she needed while panting a bit. “Don’t be gentle, for fuck’s sake.”

He stood up and looked at the wall for a second, running his hands down his face.

“Am I too much for you?” she asked.

He heard the hint of self-conscious seeping in. And that was criminal.

He crawled on top of the desk, caging her between his hands and knees.

“No. My problem is that I want a bed. And maybe some rope and lots of lube and good music and a few things that vibrate in a drawer close by. I want to make you come on my face so hard you think you’re dying and this”—he looked around his office—“is none of that.”

Hazel’s returning bravado made her eyes sparkle. “Surely a man that runs a dating service can be creative when he needs to be?”

His only reply to her dare was to put her nipple in his mouth while massaging between her legs with one hand. With the other he balanced above her perilously on the narrow desk. His knees were close to the edge, hemming her in.

She bucked against his hand and hissed at him. “Get to work, then.” She grabbed his face and pulled it back up to her mouth.

Excerpt #2:

Wolf decided that he would watch Hazel get on the elevator since she was not making any attempt to come open the door for him. And then a couple came up behind him.

“There’s your ex! Holy crap, she looks wasted. How sad. Can you feel me up in front of her again? I love to watch her change colors. She goes all green.”

The man, who looked like a Ken doll come to life, pulled out a key card and tapped it on the device to open the door.

“Sure thing, baby. I love your mean streak.”

As they entered the building, Wolf watched as Hazel’s eyes found the loud couple.

They were fawning all over each other.

The defeat in Hazel’s posture made Wolf grab the door before it closed and locked him out.

Her eyes looked moist before she aimed her gaze toward the floor. The two idiots were play acting their parts to make her extra miserable.

Wolf planned on regretting later what he was going to do now. She might even have him arrested for it, but he pushed the Ken doll out of the way like he was dying of thirst and Hazel was a glass of water.

She was surprised when she looked up to see him stalking her. She looked over her shoulder, saw only the wall, and turned back to him.

Wolf snaked one arm around her waist and slid his other arm behind her neck. Her grabbed a fistful of her brown hair and used it to guide her mouth to his.

He kissed the living hell out of her.

At first she was tense and unmoving. But he refused to let it stop him. The elevator’s bell sounded as the doors opened.

When Ken doll and mean slut tried to step on to it, Wolf held out his arm out to block them.

He hefted Hazel, and she took the hint, hopping up and straddling him, koala style. He never stopped kissing her. Well, now she was kissing him while he used his arm to bar the others from the elevator.

The mean slut muttered, “That’s some damn kiss.”

Wolf turned and put Hazel against the wall. And he knew he was doing it for her, but everything she was doing in rebuttal was very welcome to his now rock-hard dick.

The doors closed behind them and the elevator started its assent before he forced himself to put her down.

She straightened his Booty Camp shirt and jacket on her body and covered her mouth with one hand. Then she slapped his chest with the other.

“What the hell was that?”
