One pre-apocalyptic Earth. One desperate space mission to find a solution. One unexpected alien.
When Dr. Sakota Thorell signed onto the mission to scout out a new, habitable planet, she knew discovering extraterrestrial life was always a possibility. But she never expected to find an alien adrift in space, nor for that alien to be so intriguing. Sakota feels an instant and undeniable attraction to Astraeus, but he represents a million possibilities, and just as many threats.
There are others hunting Astraeus, and his rescue may cost Earth its last hope.

One doctor, one alien lover, one botanist, and one engineer on a desperate mission to save earth from human destruction.
Sakota saved Astraeus and her friends from certain death, but in doing so, she gained the attention of the Oreck, who will stop at nothing to destroy everything in their path.
With their ship severely damaged, Sakota and her crew land on a nearby planet and seek sanctuary while they make repairs to return home. But nothing on this perfect planet is as it appears, and Sakota soon learns they’ve traded one danger for another.
Hunted and targeted, will Sakota be able to carry out her mission, or will everyone she cares about be destroyed?

Sakota took a deep breath. “Okay. Let’s do it. We’re not going to survive if we don’t.” Hisoka and Tatiana turned around to man their consoles. She ate the last of her ration piece and slipped her hand into Astraeus’s. The escape pod reached the mouth of the black hole, then without warning, surged forward.

When Sakota was a child, long before Alistair rescued her from the orphanage in the squalid wasteland of London, the other children liked to play a game called Lights Out. In the main room where she bunked with fifteen other girls, a shaft of light streamed in from the hallway, in the same spot every night, like clockwork. The adult on night duty would check in once an hour and perform a headcount as they slept.

A few nights a week, a handful of the girls awakened and killed the hallway lights so they could scare and torture whomever they didn’t like among them. It was a powerful systematic lesson, however cruel. Sakota grew up knowing her place at the bottom rung of life. She’d never fit into the cookie-cutter type molding the upper-class girls had been bred for. She’d proved early on that she’d fight back with a vengeance when provoked, but she wasn’t certain which was worse; being preyed upon or listening to other girls’ pleas for help as she lay in the pitch-black room. The memory had stayed with her well into adulthood, as well as the countless times she could and should have stepped in to help instead of being crippled by primal fear and self-preservation. Children could be cruel. But the fear she’d experienced then was nothing, nothing, compared to being sucked into a black hole.

The escape pod whirled inside the conduit and pitched them around in a circle. They spun, at the mercy of inexhaustible energy along the black hole’s trajectory. Though she’d experienced raw fear when the Oreck had taken over the Sleipnir science vessel and killed everyone, this was different. Before, she at least had an idea what she was up against. Three razor-sharp talons emerging from claws didn’t lie. Being sucked into the black hole was like being an ant in a cyclone.

Astraeus squeezed her palm reassuringly. She turned and looked at him. They were both strapped in, tight.

Astraeus squeezed her hand. “Don’t be afraid.”

The speed of the escape pod amplified. Ribbons of light streamed past the windows like gossamer silk as the ship darted into unknown darkness. Sakota gritted her teeth. Oh, screw not acting afraid. She was terrified.

About The Cursed Crown:

My lips hitch up an inch as the hulking, slender man bends down to whisper in my ear. “A divided kingdom without a leader is weak. You will fall. You will fail. You will all die without my kindness, little girl.”
He expects me to falter, shiver, and drop my gaze to the ground like the flock of gentry buzzing around him.
My eyes widen in feigned dismay. “Kindness? Why did no one think to tell me you had any?”
I have to allow him that one concession: Rydekar is fun to tease.
He doesn’t even smile. I don’t think anyone has taunted him. “I have none. You will beg nonetheless.”
I just may, in his dreams. And in my nightmares.

No one was ever born less suited to ruling than Rissa, the thorn of the seelie realm—a half-fae so wild she’s spent the better part of a hundred years in the woods.
For all her flaws, she’s the last of the high court bloodline, and the southern king seems to think that’s reason enough to slap a crown on her feathered head. He needs her to unify the seelie forces. She needs him to forget about that nonsense.
In an effort to aid her people without condemning herself to a lifetime of misery, she sets off on a journey to find the one person with a stronger claim to the throne than hers: the cursed prince.
Sealed in the mountains of the Wilderness, under many spells, the heir of the first seelie queen is the only royal strong enough to protect the fae lands from their immortal invaders.
Surviving the untamed tribes and awakening a thousand-year-old prince seem a lot easier than ruling an entire kingdom where everyone hates her very nature.
And her choices won’t come without consequences.

Exclusive Excerpt:

Long have I heard tales of the cursed prince. I’ve seen dozens of paintings and statues of his effigy.

None prepared me for him.

Tharsen is said to be beautiful, when he is exquisite. They tell us of his luminous aura, when it’s brighter than that of a burning star. He is beyond gods and monsters, beyond fae and man.

I’ve never felt so strong a draw to anyone—anyone at all. It’s blinding and painful, claiming a piece of me. Capturing my mind.

We’re kin, he and I. I am the daughter of his brother’s great-great-great-great-grandchild, I think. Yet I feel like I am an insignificant sparrow and he, the fiercest of the beasts soaring the sky. Barely the same species. He’s everything I’m not. The dream to my nightmare.

One only needs to look at him to fall under his spell.

Yes, he’ll do. He’ll rule all of Denarhelm, and all will be only too pleased to bow at his feet. They’ll crawl to him and beg to be permitted to serve.

I can’t deny that the thought terrifies me. This creature could bring an end to the free will of the folk, with no more than a glance.

I dare to caress the icy wall encasing him.

Then I step back, startled. It feels…

Alive.

His pulse beating so hard I can sense it through the ice. That shouldn’t be possible, but I left the realm of possibility the moment I entered his eternal prison.

He’s a myth come alive. A painfully striking prince under a curse.

I suppose that makes me the hero of the story. The brave princess who rescues him, so that he may rule and I may return to the shadows, where I belong.

My story ends where his begins.

I will return to the solitary woods I’ve claimed as my own, and let the kings of the world play games of war.

Just as I wanted. Everything is within my grasp.

So why am I hesitating?

Chapter 1

Dagger

I sat and looked up at the clock that hung on the pale-yellow cement wall. My head was pounding, and a pool of blood was building on the floor in between my feet. The wait times here were getting ridiculous. It was a good thing it wasn’t a matter of life or death, I thought to myself. I had been waiting for over two hours before they had finally acknowledged I was even in the waiting room.

It was busy tonight; not as busy as some of the other nights I had been here, but that’s what I get for having to come into the emergency room on a Friday night. At least I made it through registration where they had taken my blood pressure and other vitals, and listened to my heart, then the blond behind the desk sent me here, into this hellhole of a waiting room. Across the way a child cried out and I glanced around at the other patients who sat there waiting, just like me, to be seen by the next available doctor.

While I waited, I thought back to the first time I had come walking in here and chuckled to myself. It had been a bad fight that night and I was a fucking mess. At that time, I was still an amateur in the ring and hadn’t quite learned the concept of blocking.

The nurses who were on that night had taken one look at me as I walked through the door and had rushed me in to see a doctor. There was no messing around, none of the now usual “go sit in a corner and wait.” Both of my eyes were swollen shut, my nose was bloodied and broken, I had a mouth full of blood from a cut on my inner cheek, and a large gash on my head, and I was clutching my side as if I had been shot. I was sure they thought so too, due to the blood-soaked shirt I had been wearing. They had cleaned me up a little, and within minutes, I was on my way down for a CT scan and X-rays to make sure I didn’t have any type of brain trauma or broken bones.

Once all the results were in and I had been stitched up and put back together, they had released me. Shortly after that visit I had become a regular and normally came in with the same type of injuries on a monthly basis. Apparently, you become less of an emergency once they find out that you are doing this to yourself, and now they make you wait.

“Hey, Dagger. Another fight I see. Tell me you at least look better than the other guy?” one of the regular night nurses said as she walked by, handing me a clean towel to hold to the cut above my eye. “Make sure you’re keep pressure on it. That will help stop the bleeding.”

“I know, I know. This isn’t the first time this has happened you know.” I grumbled nodding and held the clean towel she had given me up to my eye. I took the other blood-soaked towel and dropped it into the bin labeled bio-hazard. I sat back against the chair, ignoring the sharp, agonizing pain that shot down my back. There were times lately I felt as if I were being punished for the choices I had made in life. It wasn’t my fault I had grown up fighting in the streets. Besides, having a drunk of a father at home, I’d had no choice but to learn how to defend myself at a young age, first from him, and then from the others who picked on me and stole what little lunch money I had. However, if I hadn’t learned then, I probably wouldn’t be sitting here now. Instead I would have become some nameless victim and my body would have been found facedown in a ditch or back alley somewhere.

Regardless, fighting was now in my blood, so it was no surprise I had made a career out of it. Becoming an MMA fighter was probably the best thing I could have done. I was good at what I did, one of the best in the area, as a matter of fact, and it paid the bills. However, it just so happened that this career choice also came with a lot of injuries. Good thing I was a tough son of a bitch.

“Still kicking ass and takin’ numbers, huh, Dagg?” Bree, one of the nurses, said as she entered the room carrying a clipboard. Bree had looked after me the last few times I came in. “Come with me. I had a feeling you might stop in tonight. We haven’t seen you in a while, I was getting a little worried,” she said as she pulled open a curtain to one of the little exam rooms and patted the paper-covered bed.

I listened to the familiar sound of paper crinkling beneath me as I took a seat and groaned from the pain shooting up my back again.

“I’m just going to take your temperature, blood pressure, pulse, and oxygen saturation, but you probably know the drill by now.” She smiled.

“Yep, sure, use and abuse me, just like all the pretty girls.” I chuckled and extended my free arm so she could put the cuff on while continuing to hold the towel up to my head. One thing about head wounds: they bleed like a bitch.

I let her do her thing, watching the monitors on the machines. “Why are you here, Dagger? Everything is normal, same as it always is.”

“I missed you ladies here at the good ole’ emergency room. You guys always take such good care of me, and being a single man, a lady’s touch is always nice. Plus, my coach dropped me off here and made me come in.” I winked at her as she tore the cuff from my arm and smirked.

She pulled the towel away from my head and checked out my face. Taking her gloved hand, she gently touched the cut above my eyebrow, causing me to jump. She pushed my hand back up, so the towel rested against the cut again, and went to a drawer and pulled out a couple of bandages.

“For the time being I will butterfly suture this until you see the doctor. It should help stop the bleeding a bit. You’ll probably need stitches again.”

“Yeah, as you can see, that is the same as always too,” I said, looking her in the eyes as she looked over my face again. I flinched this time as she touched another spot under my left eye. I had taken a left hook to that cheek; hadn’t even seen it coming until I felt the hit.

“That is probably going to be a lovely shade of green and purple in the coming hours.”

She pulled the towel down away from my face and examined the gash closer this time. “Yep, you are going to need stitches. Hold still, this might sting.” She smiled at me, while placing the bandages across the gash. I shrugged it off as if I didn’t care that I needed to be sewn back up, but, honestly, I hated stitches, and Bree knew it.

Bree was always good to me, and she gently fastened the gash closed with the bandages. “However, this time you should probably come in and have us remove the stitches, instead of doing it yourself.” She tsked. “It says here that you left with twelve last time, but you never came back for your follow-up.”

“Yeah, yeah. I know, I was short on time.” I said, standing up. It was the same lecture as the last time and the time before that. I had become good at removing stitches on my own.

“Every time you remove them on your own, you risk the fact that the wound may not be closed properly and subjecting yourself to infection,” she scolded.

“Well, what can I say, I’m a glutton for punishment.” I shrugged, smiling.

“Don’t flash me that sexy smile of yours. It’s serious.” She frowned at me and muttered something under her breath as she marked something down on my chart. “All right, you know how it goes now. Take a seat out there.” She pulled the curtain open, signaling for me to go and sit down.

“Yep, I know how it goes, go wait and you’ll call me as soon as there is a room ready.” I grabbed my sweatshirt and walked out into the waiting room. I suddenly realized I spent entirely too much time here. I practically could have done the full check-in myself.

I was just about to head over to where I had been sitting but noticed my seat had now been taken by an older man, and the room was twice as full than it was when I had left. I walked across the room and grabbed a different seat over in the corner, off by myself. This time when I sat down, the pain in my kidney area was bad enough that it ensured me I would probably be peeing nothing but blood in a few hours. Sadly, I knew that feeling too. Guess I probably should have told Bree about the multiple kicks and punches I had endured to that area tonight as well, and perhaps she might have sped things along.

I shrugged off that thought and threw my sweatshirt on, pulling the hood up over my head to cover my eyes. The least Bree could have done was pass me a couple of pain pills on the sly, and she might have if I had told her I had a headache. I felt like shit, and the last thing I wanted was to have a bunch of people sitting and staring at me as if I were some monster out of a movie. Few people in the area new who I was, and I didn’t want them to think I was just some looser who had lost in a street fight. I had too much pride to allow them to think that. I would never waste money on a stupid street fight.

The longer I sat there leaning up against the wall using my hood as a pillow the more comfortable I became. Finally, the pain in my back settled and I was just about to fall asleep when I heard another familiar voice call my name.

“Mollie, is that you?” I asked as I pulled the hood off my head and carefully rubbed my half-swollen shut eyes.

“Yeah, Dag, it’s me. Come on, handsome, let’s get you looked after, shall we?”

I stood up, blinking hard trying to see where I was going. I walked toward the door to the exam rooms, right where Mollie stood. I smiled as I approached her. I had seen her plenty of times here before as well. “Hey, Mollie, are you finally showing your old pal to a room?”

“Yeah, come on, you poor thing,” she said, her voice full of pity, grabbing my arm and walking beside me to keep me from banging into things. “Just a warning, I’m not your nurse tonight. You’ve got the new girl, so make sure you’re on your best behavior and that you treat her nicely, okay, Dagger?”

“I’m insulted! When have I ever been mean?” I asked innocently enough to make her laugh.

Even though I couldn’t see it, I could imagine her rolling her eyes at me. “When aren’t you? You’re always impatient, snappish, and the looks you give are enough to knock people to their knees,” she said as she pulled the curtain back for me to enter the little cubicle of a room.

“The look you’re referring to is part of my charm,” I answered, sitting down on the table. “Really, though, the attitude is just because of the pain, Mollie. You guys poke and prod around; it hurts more than the actual fight,” I argued, defending my behavior.

She placed my chart in the holder on the wall and went to pull the curtain across. “Well then stop the fighting and be nice, Dagger. The girl looking after you tonight is new here and she isn’t used to you yet. She’s a sweet girl, so don’t give her a hard time. Her and the doctor should be in very soon,” she said as she pulled the curtain back across the doorway and left the room.

I sat there for a few moments until the pain got so bad I had to lay back. I pulled my sweatshirt over my head and kicked my feet up on the gurney, resting my arm across my abs, and closed my eyes. Seconds later, I balled my sweatshirt up and shoved it under my head to use as a little pillow and laid there staring up at the ceiling. I could barely wait to see what little mouse of a girl they sent in to take care of me. If Mollie had warned me to be on my best behavior, this girl must be weak.

Within minutes, a woman walked into the room wearing cute purple scrubs and carrying a clipboard. She didn’t greet me or look at me; she just walked over to the wall and removed my chart, setting it on the counter. I couldn’t help but check her out; she had an ass that any man would be foolish to forget. When she looked at me, I felt my pulse start to rise. She had gorgeous glass-blue eyes and long, dark eyelashes, perfect lips, and the cutest nose. Her hair was pulled back in a messy ponytail. She sat down and slipped on a pair of frameless glasses and started going over my chart.

“Could you please remove your T-shirt so I can hook you up to the monitors. If we must shave you, we will,” she said, showing me a razor blade.

“No need,” I answered as I pulled my shirt over my head. I watched her eyes dance over my chest. I wanted to see if there was any reaction from her, but she just went about her business placing the electrodes on my chest, then she pressed a few buttons and the monitors started to beep. As her fingers grazed over my bare chest, lead to lead, the steady beeping from the machines started to get faster, the numbers climbing.

“Are you feeling okay?” she questioned as she continued to attach the pads and fiddle with the wires. I had been through this a thousand times—it was all just part of the protocol—but this time it was my attraction to her that was causing the machines to go haywire.

“Yeah,” I said, swallowing hard.

“Whoa!” she exclaimed as the numbers continued to climb. “Something here has got to be defective.” She rested her hand against my chest. “You’re sure you feel okay?” she asked as she fiddled with the leads for another few moments before taking her hand off me and searching through the drawers for something.

I watched as the numbers on the machine instantly started to fall. She turned back to me and placed her hand on my chest, prepared to replace one of the leads, and the numbers started to climb again. She removed her hand again from my chest and watched as the numbers fell. A soft smirk floated across her lips, and that was when she realized that it was her that was making my heart rate go crazy. Her cheeks flushed and her eyes met mine as she rested her palm against my chest again.

“Perhaps you should stop touching me,” I teased, grabbing her hand that was still resting against my chest as she watched the monitor.

She smirked at my comment and rolled her eyes. “Did you at least win your fight?” she asked, studying the injuries on my face. Then she looked at my back and ran her fingers over the bruising that I was sure was already starting to show in my kidney area. The machines started beeping wildly again, and without even waiting for my response, she started writing her notes.

“Why is there is no mention of trauma to the kidney area on the forms?” she asked impatiently.

“There is no mention because I didn’t say anything,” I grunted as she lightly pressed in the area. “Oh and I won. The other guy looks way worse.”

“Well, then I’m glad I’m dealing with you and not him then.” She kept her head down and continued making notes, studying the monitor. “Any other areas of injury you’re not telling us about?” she questioned, those glass-blue eyes glaring at me.

I was going to say something smart, but when I saw the fire in her eyes, I decided to shut up and just shake my head. I didn’t need another fight on my hands tonight.

I couldn’t help but wonder of what he was hiding under that perfect form.

I was leather and handcuffs.

He was ties and cuff-links,

But it didn’t matter that we were from two different worlds.

Once we collided there was no going back.

Neither of us were ready for love…

He came with baggage and drama not to mention a young son.

I avoided drama like the plague and avoided little kids even more.

EXCERPT:

I pulled into the parking lot of Walmart and headed to the bakery. After grabbing a few packs of chocolate cupcakes with chocolate fudge icing, I made my way up front to check out.

“Why in the hell are there twenty-five lanes and only two are open? Of course, none are ten items or less and none are self check-out. What the hell, people?”
“Tell me about it,” a lady behind me agreed as she whipped her cart with what had to be fifty items around me and got in line.
“Really? Was I not standing here?”
“You were, but the line is up here,” the woman said sarcastically.
“I hope that I pull you over someday.” She looked up and stared.
Yeah, figure that one out, bitch. But sometimes you have to wait for karma and sometimes you get to be karma, today was my lucky day.
“Oh, I forgot something,” asshole lady announced. “I’ll be just one second, hold my spot.”
The cashier looked at me dumbfounded. “What the hell?” I asked.
“No clue, I can’t wait for her,” the cashier named Cindy explained.
“Oh, don’t you worry, Barbie the bitch deserves this.” I moved in front of her cart and then slid her items to the back and moved her cart out of the lane.
I laid my cupcakes down and then Cindy rang them up. “Anything else for you?”
“Yes.” I moved and stood in front of the impulse-buys, you know that section full of gum and mints plus silly travel size gizmos. “I’ll take this.” I plucked a pack of Juicy Fruit gum and set in on the belt then waited until Cindy rolled it forward.
I glanced back at Bitchy Barbie who had returned with her item and was glaring at me. “Andddd… I’ll take this.” I picked up a pack of Mentos and slowly set it on the belt as well. I locked eyes with Cindy and saw that she too was enjoying this. I glanced around Barbie or whatever the bitch’s name was just to make sure that I wasn’t holding anyone else up. When I saw that I wasn’t and the bitch was furiously tapping her toe and had her arms crossed, while continuing to look down at the other lane to see if it was empty, I perused the tabloids and pretended to be trying to pick one. “Oh, don’t you think that Harry and Meghan are adorable?”
“No, I don’t. What’s adorable is for you to stop goofing off and check out, I’ve got places to be,” Barbie snapped.
“And I would have liked someone not to cut me off and then leave their cart blocking me so I still couldn’t check out while they went and hunted the item”—I glanced down at the two things she held—“sorry, items she had forgotten. Now that we understand each other, I’m ready to check out.” I turned to Cindy. “So, Cindy, how was your day?”
“Day sucked but my evening has been entertaining as all get out.” She smiled brightly.
I grabbed my bag with cupcakes, gum, and mints and headed out. Sure I was still in somewhat of a grumpy mood but there was a lot of shit going on. First, what was up with fucking Walmart not opening more lanes? Oh, and bitchy Barbie? She was just that cherry on top to a spiraling out of control kind of day. Because let’s not forget, that just for shits and giggles my mother was accosted.
Before I straddled my bike, I shoved an entire cupcake into my mouth. By the time I pulled into my parents’ driveway, I felt better. There were two fewer cupcakes, but my mood had been soothed.About the author:

Chapter One
Paige

“This is seriously the lamest,” Alex said, rolling his eyes as he sipped on a martini. He bumped my arm with his elbow. “Let’s give it five more minutes then we can take off.”

Giving him my best smile, I made a different suggestion. “Or we could leave now and go home to watch a movie?”

His head tipped to the side, eyes narrowing. “You’re not getting out of this. You promised Holly you’d come out with us and that,” he said, pointing his finger into my bare shoulder, “Is exactly what you’re doing. We’ll find you a man even if I have to go to extreme measures.”

My eyes widened. Alex’s extreme measures were to be avoided at all costs. They were sometimes loud and always—guaranteed—embarrassing. “No, no, no, that’s not necessary at all,” I said, shaking my head, grabbing onto his hands. “Five minutes it is.” I prayed that my smile was believable enough.

The truth was—I liked being out. Way more than I should. If I didn’t keep a tight handle on myself I knew I could end up like my mom. A young, single mother, working her fingers to the bone for a family of rich people. My grandmother had gotten pregnant with my mom before grandpa had married her and made an honest woman out of her like he always joked.

To me it was no joke.

No way was I winding up in trouble with no husband and most importantly no education.

As soon as I was old enough to cogitate, I promised myself I’d never follow in their footsteps. So far, so good. I’d never even had a boyfriend.

“Time to play ‘Who Would You’,” Alex announced, setting his martini glass down then slapping his hands on his lap.

I laughed out loud, nearly spilling my drink. Playing this game with Alex was always hilarious. He’d bring it up in the most inappropriate places—school retreats, his cousin’s bar mitzvah or my personal favorite—a homeowners meeting his mom made him (us) go to once when she was out of town.

The full name of the game should be, ‘Who Would You Sleep With’. It was a funny way to pass the time especially in mandatory boring situations.

“Hmm, I think that guy over there with the really tight pants is just perfect for me,” he said, raising his eyebrows as he wiggled his body on the stool. “Your turn.” His head snapped to me waiting for an answer.

Scoping out the place, my gaze traveled along until they stopped suddenly on a pair of bright blue eyes aimed directly at me. His stare was so intense, I spun around on my seat, leaning on the bar, my heart beating like crazy.

“Good, great God up in heaven, please let that hunk of perfection whisk our good girl—Paige—up in his very muscular, very strong arms and carry her away.”

Glaring over at Alex, his hands pressed together in prayer, eyes shut tight, I punched him in the arm. “Would you stop? Someone might hear you.” My vision searched for the man who’d been staring. A shock went through me when our eyes met again. The side of his handsome mouth quirked up, sending a warmth down to my lower belly.

He looked like trouble.

The kind I knew better than to get involved with.

Also the kind I was very much attracted to.

“Knock me down and call me Susan,” Alex said, grasping my arm. “Not once in four years have I ever seen you blush.”

Turning around again, I grabbed my barely touched drink. “I’m not blushing,” I said, shaking my head at him. “It’s the alcohol.” Picking up my glass, I glanced at the mood ring on my finger. Solid red. I’d had that ring for years and never seen it turn that shade before.

Alex snorted so loud I glared at him. “You’ve barely had anything.” He rolled his eyes as he straightened his shirt. “You’ve got a thing for Mr. Hotstuff over there. Admit it.”

I would do no such thing—to him or to myself. “Whatever.”

“Alright, girlie. Part deux of Who Would You commences now.” He fake shook out his hair like he was some kind of diva—which he was. “Watch and learn, my dear. Watch and learn.” Then he strode off as though walking down some kind of imaginary red carpet only he could see.

That made me laugh again so hard I had to put down my drink or risk spilling it. The second half of Who Would You consisted of making some kind of contact with your chosen one. Be it touch or talk it didn’t matter. Fail to complete this part of the game and you’d lose.

We didn’t play for money or anything. But losing your pride was worse.

As he neared his intended victim, I kept my eyes glued on his progress. A few more yards and he’d be there. My stomach gave a small twist wondering what stunt he was going to pull this time. With Alex you just never knew.

Two more steps and then the show really started. He pretended to trip then both his hands reached for Mr. Tight Pants’ arm. Alex ended up on his knees, pulling so hard on the guy’s arm that he was nearly bent in half attempting to assist.

The look on Alex’s face made me chuckle out loud. He was quite enamored. I had to admit that Mr. Tight Pants was a hottie.

The piece de resistance was yet to come. Struggling to get up, Alex took full advantage by leaning on his new friend, wiping his brow in an exaggerated manner and trying to get as close as he could to him. When Alex finally moved to leave, the tablecloth had other ideas. Like staying attached to Alex’s watch.

As he swung his arm up to wave goodbye the drinks on the table went crashing to the floor as though Alex were some kind of mock magician. He looked genuinely shocked—I don’t think that was part of his act.

Wait staff from all around zeroed in on the crisis, moving to pick up, clean and make sure no one was hurt.

The commotion he created made me laugh so hard I doubled over, nearly unable to breathe. My stomach hurt and tears streamed down my face. A few minutes later, the man of the hour glided up to me.

“Your turn now, missy.”

That set me off again. “How am I supposed to follow that?” I raised my hands in the air and pretended to bow multiple times. “You win, dude. There’s no way I can beat you. You’re the master.”

Yanking on his collar with his thumbs and index fingers he said, “True. I am the best at this game but it’s not truly finished until all participants participate. Now, off you go. Get.” His hands pushed me off my stool forcing me forward.

I’d been friends with Alex for years. He would never give up until I at least tried. “Fine, but I don’t know who to pick.”

Alex shouted, “Ha, yeah right. The guy you’re making googly eyes with. Now scoot.” One more push and I was on my way. No fooling him.

The rules were pretty simple. Contact could mean anything. Even just a polite, hello. I could say hi to someone. It wouldn’t be the showstopper Alex embarked on. That was okay. One quick greeting then we could leave.

My heart drummed a steady beat as I approached my Who Would You target. I could see the back of him now. His hair wasn’t unkempt so much as a few weeks past needing a cut. Which made it just the perfect length for me to run my fingers through. Peeking down at my ring I noticed it was still red. So odd.

That thought jarred me out of my daydream. I needed to stay focused. Get this done then get home. Wiping my clammy palms on the sides of my dress, I inhaled a deep breath. A few more seconds and this would be over.

My pace slowed now that I was directly behind him. Lollygagging there for a bit I waited in the hope that he’d turn around, halting any further need for me to grab his attention.

Watching the curve of his neck move as he tossed back the amber remnants in his glass caused my skin to heat. Something in me wanted to reach out and stroke the skin there. I bet it was hot—maybe even a bit sweaty.

If I touched my lips—just so—I wondered if—

Just then someone bumped up behind me with so much force I couldn’t help but be propelled into the very neck I had been daydreaming about. “Oooff, I’m sorry,” I said, genuinely shocked to now be pressed up fully to my target’s back.

His skin felt almost scalding through his shirt into my clumsy body. The heat from his back sizzled against my breasts causing my nipples to harden at the contact.

“I’m honored,” he said, twisting around placing his hands on my waist. “Thought for a minute I was wrong. But I’m never wrong.” That smirk emerged again holding my attention as well as my breath hostage.

I felt almost dizzy being so close to him. My stomach clenched, filling with butterflies. “You’re honored for what exactly?” I asked, squinting at him, not comprehending his meaning.

His smile grew. “You and your friend,” he said, nodding in Alex’s direction. “You’re playing, Who Would You. Correct?”

My stomach dropped. How did he— “I’ve played it many times before. Hell, I practically invented that game,” he chuckled, his fingers tightening into my skin.

A blush rose on my cheeks, my legs desperately wanting to give out. “Umm,” was all I could say.

“You are the cutest thing I’ve seen in a very long time.” His eyes raked me from head to toe, spending a bit more time on my cleavage than he should. “By the way, I’m Jake. And you are?” he asked, sticking his hand into mine. His large, warm grasp engulfed my tiny one.

“Umm—Mindy,” I replied, not wanting to give him my real name for some reason. Like if I did, maybe it would make this—real. And it couldn’t be real.

“Can I tell you a secret?” he asked, lowering his voice a bit, pulling me closer to whisper in my ear, creating waves of goosebumps. “I already picked you out as my, Who Would You.”

Jessa lives in a very non-descript, unassuming town filled with the best kind of people. Most days, she can be found in the stands of various soccer fields, cheering her on Youngest, or discussing books with her Oldest (who is an English Honors student).
At night, if she’s not up burning the midnight oil, Jessa enjoys snuggling up to her hubby and watching his latest pick for a cheesy romance movie. He always chooses the best ones. (after he cooks supper, of course).
