I groan and drop my head on the bar.

“What?” she asks with a sly smile that gets my attention below the belt.

I turn my head and meet her eyes: “I’m rooming with Cohen. Now I really don’t want this night to end.”

Gilly snorts, biting her lip as if to stop herself from laughing. I chuckle, and she loses the fight, soon joining me. 

“Well, how about you let me buy you another drink . . .” She nods at the twenty-year-old malt in my hand, “. . . and I can help you avoid any awkward interruptions,” she whispers. “Because I don’t know about you, but it doesn’t matter how close you are with someone, no one wants to walk in on post-coital bliss, solo or otherwise.” 

Well, damn. Now there’s only one person’s post-coital anything I’m thinking of, and it’s the woman in front of me. 

This is the first time it’s been just the two of us without any of our family or friends around. So far, all I know about Gillian Nelson is that she’s Ronnie’s older sister, and she knows how to wear the hell out of a classy dress with Louboutins I want digging into my back. 

Before I get to making that particular fantasy a reality, I’m going to find out more about this golden-haired goddess. 

I sit up straight, catching the bartender finally moving our way out of the corner of my eye.

“How about I buy the drinks, and you find us an empty booth so you can dazzle me with your charm and undoubtedly stunning wit for the rest of the night?” I ask, quirking my brow.

Her eyes flash. “Twist my arm, why don’t you.” She leans in, resting her hand on my shoulder and bringing her mouth close to my ear. “But don’t feel you have to play it safe and only compliment my personality and intellect, Ez. I didn’t wear this dress, and these shoes not to be noticed and appreciated, and I haven’t missed your continued appreciation all night. Don’t make me miss it now.” She brushes her lips against my cheek in a barely-there kiss before succeeding in knocking me—figuratively—on my ass. She straightens, wraps her fingers around my tumbler, and meets my wide stare before lifting the glass to her lips and downing the rest of the scotch like it’s water. She winks at me. “I’ll have another one of those if you will.” 

Then she’s slipping off the stool, and my head turns to watch her—and her amazing ass—walk across the room toward the black leather booths lining the front windows. Freaking gorgeous. 

A tap of knuckles on the bar knocks me from my impure thoughts, and I meet the amused gaze of the bartender who’s leaning his elbows onto the bar, his eyes drifting from me to the same sight I was just enjoying.

I look back to Gilly just in time to see her slide into a booth, her dress riding up as she does, giving me a glimpse of lace-topped stockings and a garter. Damn! Just the thought that she’s been wearing that all night has me groaning under my breath. I can’t look away. “Make it two of the same.”

“Lucky bastard,” he mutters.

Ever since I skipped town last May to avoid a stalker, the threats against me have stopped, but my boredom is at an all-time high, and so is my anxiety. My family is in a particular line of work that makes a lot of enemies. That’s right, I am a mafia princess. Working at the Sex On The Beach nightclub on the Atlantic City Boardwalk has been the hardest thing I have ever had to do in my life. I hate what that says about who I used to be. I know my family would hate that I even work here if I had told them where I was. 
If the name does not tell you what this club is all about, the atmosphere and pretty much general lack of morals will. It looks like a seventies porno set threw up in here and left shag carpeting and bright colored furniture behind. It is a monstrosity for sure. I am not sure who is behind the threats, but I knew I had to leave to protect my family and myself. It started with notes showing up in my purse whenever I was out. I opened them and promptly tossed them. Threats are not new to the Vitali family, and that is how we handled them. My immediate family consists of my father, Fabrizio, my mother, Fawn, my oldest brother, Brando; still older than me brother, Bartolo; then me; and finally, the youngest, Bella. I have a million cousins, though my favorite is Albie. However, our “you can’t touch me” mentality had run its course when I received a picture of my younger sister, Bella. It was taken up close, but you could tell she had no idea she was being photographed. She was laughing with a boy from her Drama class. That note gave me two options: either marry the stalker, whoever he is, or disappear forever. The picture told me that Bella would face the brunt of refusal to do either. I chose the latter and took only cash, my important documents, and clothes, leaving my cell phone and credit cards behind. However, the first thing I bought was a new phone. I knew that I wouldn’t be able to not talk to my mom. For some reason, I didn’t think that it was fair of me to drag my family into a fight they had nothing to do with. They have enough going on with the day to day shit they deal with. 

 

I drove until I reached the ocean, which I have always been fascinated with. Atlantic City seemed far enough away to be safe but close enough if I decided to risk it and head home.  I rented an apartment above a butcher shop and have been working for almost a year now, but I miss my family and my mom’s authentic Italian cooking. I cannot even remember the last time I had a meal that did not come from the bar or a fast food joint. If I am honest, I miss my mom’s hugs more than anything. At least I get to talk to her every once in a while, but it’s just not the same. Last year, I graduated from NYU with a dual certification in elementary education and secondary history with a minor in History. I got certified to be a teacher in New York, but then all this happened, and I never got a chance to get a job.

I don’t just kiss Candace, I ravish her, I drink her in like a man lost in a desert, dying of a thirst he cannot quench. And I was until I found her again. What’s worse is, that desert was of my own making, a desolate fucking desert I’m done with because, thank fuck, she’s not done with me.
Hugging her close, I hold her like this moment is it, like this is the last time I might ever hold her again. I kiss her just the same, like I will never kiss her again. I’ve never kissed her with that kind of desperation before now, and not because I didn’t love her. I just always took for granted that tomorrow would come. And I always intended to come back, but I didn’t and now I know, shit happens. People die, tomorrow is not always guaranteed.
She knows this kiss is different, too. It’s in the way she kisses me back, the way she twists her fingers around my T-shirt. In the way she jerks back, parting our lips, searching my face. In the intensity of her green eyes when they meet mine, the sudden parting of lips, now swollen from my kiss, at what she finds, she orders, “Do not kiss me like this is goodbye, Rick Savage, damn you.”
She tries to dislodge herself from my grip but I hold onto her. “Don’t run.”
She gapes. “Run? Me? I’m not the one who ran.” I physically flinch with those well-deserved words, but she’s not done. “If you want to say goodbye, just say goodbye, Rick.”
“I’m not saying goodbye, Candace.” I catch her hair around my fingers and drag her gaze to my unguarded gaze. I let her see the torment in me. I let her see the guilt. I let her see the dark need in me that isn’t going away like I’m not going away. “This is not goodbye,” I repeat. “This is me making sure that you’re properly kissed, fucked, licked, and loved, the way you deserve to be.”
“It feels like goodbye.”
“No, and one day you’ll trust me enough to know that a dark night doesn’t take us there again. I promise you, you will. Soon.”
“How soon?”
“New York. It’s going to change everything.”
“Can we go now?” she asks hopefully, but we both know we can’t. We both know we have to see tomorrow out.
“I wish we could, baby. I wish we could.”
My mouth slants over hers, my tongue licking deeply, possessively and I make sure every answer she wants is right there in this kiss. I make sure she knows that I’m not fucking living another day without her. She moans into my mouth and when my hands settle on her spine, she arches into me. I rotate her toward the couch, pressing her against the back, my hands finding that soft smooth skin under her T-shirt.
Goosebumps lift on her skin and I tear my mouth from hers. “You have always been exactly what I need.”
“Am I?”
“Oh yes, baby. You are. I felt you even when you weren’t with me. Every day I was away, I felt you. I missed you. I needed the hell out of you.” I catch the hem of her shirt and toss it, my gaze lowering to her breasts, my fingers tracing the swell above the black lace of her bra, then finding her nipple through that lace.
She sucks in a breath and catches my hand. “Rick, I—”
“God, I love when you say my damn name…”

Oh how I needed this book! I needed to know how Savage and Candace navigate through this craziness and espionage that they’ve been living in. Oh I should say you MUST read books 1 and 2 first or this book won’t make any sense. Plus you have to get to know both Candace and Rick.

This whole series had me guessing the whole time. Who is on the “good” side, who is a liar, who can’t you trust? Who CAN you trust? This whole series makes you second guess everything you think you have figured out.

The only thing you can be sure of throughout this whole trilogy: that Rick Savage will protect Candace with everything he has.
