When I walk up Victoria’s porch on Saturday morning, I can hear a war waging inside the house.

“Chloe, you can’t wear that shirt again. It’s dirty. Take it off now.” Victoria’s voice sounds stern but tired.

“But I like it,” Chloe retaliates.

“It’s dirty and smelly,” Lucas says. “Why do you want to be smelly?”

For a few minutes, I wait outside the door for the spirits to calm down, but things just seem to escalate. It’s best if I announce my presence, even if I’m twenty minutes early.

The second I ring the bell, the voices die down but then start again, now as low whispers. After a few hurried orders of “behave” and “pick your socks up off the floor,” the door swings open.

“Hi,” I say.

“You’re here early,” Victoria exclaims. She wears a bright orange robe she desperately tightens around her. Clearly she meant to change before my arrival. Something is different about her this morning. There are shadows under her eyes, and she looks utterly disheveled. She looks down at the gym bag in my hand as if considering something.

“Should I wait outside, or in my car?” I joke because she seems to need some lighting up.

“God, no.” If possible, she gets even more flustered than before, shaking her head and opening the door wider. “Sorry, I’m a bit of a mess this morning.”

“There’s no need to explain yourself to me,” I assure her as I walk inside. The little devils are nowhere to be seen. “Where did the kids disappear to? I heard them when I walked up onto the porch.”

“Chloe agreed to change when she heard the doorbell. Sienna’s helping her. Lucas went to change into soccer-appropriate clothes. Do you need to change?”

“Nah, this will do. I’ll change into a new shirt afterward.” I point to the gym bag, in which I packed a towel, shower gel, and a new shirt.

“Sorry for my outfit. I meant to change into something decent, but….”

And maybe it’s because she seems to get more distressed by the second, but I resort to the one thing I know will take her mind off it.

“Hey, I’m a big proponent of indecency. You’d make my day if you told me you’re wearing a camisole underneath that.” Seeing her blush, I can’t help leaning in and adding in a slight whisper, “And no panties.”

My words have the desired effect of making her laugh. “I’m not even awake enough to come up with a witty reply to that. Let’s go in the kitchen. I’ll make you a sandwich.”

As I follow her, I actually make an effort to avoid ogling her round, perky ass. Her robe is tightened around her middle, which highlights her other curves more than I wish it would.

“Do you ever leave the house wearing just your robe?”

“I know my choice of clothes is oddly colorful sometimes, but I don’t go out of the house in what’s practically underwear.”

“Not even to get the mail or something?”

She turns around as we enter the small kitchen, pursing her lips. “What’s with all the questions?”

“Just wondering if any of your neighbors saw what I’m seeing right now. I might have to kill a few if the answer’s yes.”

“Territorial much?”

Her question takes me by surprise, and damn, I haven’t been territorial with a woman in a long time. Victoria keeps surprising me. Not only that, she makes me surprise myself, and that has never happened before. Maybe this is why, despite my best efforts, I can’t tone down the flirting. Okay, scratch that. I’m not even making a decent effort. If anything, I’m looking for any opportunity to make her blush.

A slow smile spreads on her face. “Just think about all those men who saw me in a bikini.”

I love this woman’s spirit and talent for banter. Still, that doesn’t make me less of an ass. All I want is to prop her up on this counter, bury myself inside her, and lure sounds of pleasure out of her delicious mouth.

I swear the pounding in my head is audible. Confusion settles in as I realize that someone is pounding on my door.

“Go the fuck away.”

“Wake up, sunshine. We have to have our proper introduction, and it’s noon.”

The events of last night flash behind my closed eyes, and it feels like fire ants are pouring out of the top of my head and sweeping down my body in a painful wave. Lifting my comforter I look down, and I’m still in my boots and panties. Maybe if I just stay still, he’ll go away.

“I’m not going away, so you might as well get that sexy little ass out of bed. I brought coffee and donuts.”

Coffee? Donuts? That’s almost incentive enough to drag my tired ass out of bed. Almost, but not quite.

“Let’s go, Rambo. I’m giving you thirty seconds, then I’m coming in.”

Pounding. That’s what exists right now. My eyes crack open, and a streak of sunlight stabs me in the eye. I moan and roll over, jerking my comforter over my head.

“FUUUUCCKKKK!”

I hear him chuckle, and I flip my comforter back. I jerk my boots off and throw on my big fluffy robe before stomping out into the living room. I unlock the door and fling it open. My jaw comes unhinged, and I give a valiant effort to work up the proper amount of lust for the shirtless god standing there.

My cheeks pink up and I close the door, slamming it in his face. I can’t do this today, seriously. I glance over, into the mirror next to the door, and want to cry. My bright red hair is sticking up all over the place. I grab a beanie and slide it on, ready to try this again. Opening the door, I try to channel my inner queen, but I stumble with as much grace as my tired, hungover body can manage as I slide down the porch column to sit down on the top step.

He hands me a donut and a tear leaks out when I see the bacon on top. Bacon makes everything better, and that goes for donuts as well. He hands me the coffee and sits next to me.

I give him the side-eye, looking at him as covertly as possible. He just sits there, looking out at the ocean view as he drinks his own nectar of the gods. Taking my own sip, I moan as the caffeinated deliciousness slides down my gullet.

In the daylight, he looks nothing like my husband Jason Momoa. He has sandy blond hair that’s shaved on the sides with the top long, flopping over to one side. His right arm is decorated with a multitude of bright tattoos. He has muscles upon muscles, with a nicely haired chest. His nose is fucked—broken way too many times—but sexy nonetheless. His mirrored aviators hide his eyes from me, and I thank God for that small mercy. He seems like the type to have pools for eyes, and I really can’t afford to drown in those right now.

“My name is Ali, by the way, or Alice. Whichever one you prefer.”

He leans back against the railing and gives me his full attention, which is disconcerting.

“My name is Luke.” He holds out his hand and I take it. His warm, calloused fingers slide over mine, and I clamp my lips shut. Moaning like a cat in heat would give away a lot more than I want to, so I lock that shit down.

He grins. Apparently, I’m not fooling anyone.

Wade Freaking Knox!!! I was so excited for his story! And he’s just as gushy sweet as I thought he would be. I just love these huge, muscled, football guys who are big marshmallows. My cell phone started ringing. I didn’t want to wake up Jazz and Briar, so I answered it hurriedly without even looking at the caller ID. “Hello?” I whispered.

“Did you miss me last night?” Hensley said with a cocky chuckle.

My heart stopped and my breath caught in my throat. He continued. “I think the shoulder will be just fine, but you are going to pay for it, you worthless bitch.”

All that was going through my mind at that point was the memories of what I had been through and the promises I had just made myself. Suddenly, all the fear left me, only to be replaced with hatred and loathing for the monster on the other end of the line. Being quiet so I didn’t wake the sleeping couple down the hall was low on my priority list at that very moment.

“Listen to me, you sorry sack of horseshit. I have more than paid for that little shoulder graze. You put me through hell, you broke my spirit and soul, and you’ve scarred my body so that I’ll never be able to forget you. Every time I see my goddamned ankles, I’ll be reminded of you and the sick ways you got your rocks off. I told you last night that I was done, and I fucking meant it. I won’t be the weak, scared person you turned me into for another minute. Charlie is back, the Charlie I thought you loved, the one I assumed you wanted. I am back and taking no shit from anyone, especially you. I am bringing me back, the funny, witty, happy Charlie. If you think you’ll get another day of my happiness, you are sadly mistaken.”

Rage fueled the comments that followed as I kept going. “How’d it feel, huh? How’d it feel to hold down a little woman who physically couldn’t fight you off and beat her like a dog? Do you feel more like a man because you took down a person who is a foot shorter than you and a hundred and twenty-five pounds lighter? I hope you got what you needed from it because you won’t get a chance to do it again. You are nothing to me anymore. I’m better than you, and I can’t believe I let you use me for three years.”

My chest was heaving. I had to catch my breath and gather my wits. Unfortunately, that gave the bastard a chance to speak.

“Charlie, you are damaged goods. No man will ever want you now. You’re all scarred up and that screams you’re a pushover, nothing more than a weak girl.”

“Listen here, you son of a bitch. I don’t need a man, so I don’t care if anyone wants me. I’d rather be alone than with somebody like you ever again. The scars you gave me serve as a reminder that I am not that girl anymore. I don’t need to have a man to survive and be happy. I’m done talking to you. Don’t ev—”

“You listen here, Char. You are mine. You know it, and I know it. Come home and we will work it out. I’ll never lay another unwanted hand on you, baby, I swear.”

I started screaming at him. “You dumb bastard. I fell for that shit for three years. You couldn’t tell the truth if you tried. Just answer this. Did you ever love me? Was it ever anything more than a conquest for you? How could you? Why did you break my heart?”

I had woken Jazz and Briar at that point. Sadly, I didn’t care. “I loved you. Still do. Why can’t you see that?”

His answer kind of shocked me. “Mainly because you hit me and raped me. Or was that why you loved me? You didn’t think another woman would put up with you and your perverted antics. I was the stupid girl who stayed out of fear. Fear of not ever finding anyone else, fear that if I tried you would beat me worse, or go after my friends. Or being held down and fucked with no say so, only to get my ass whipped for crying about it, or crying when the punches or the lashes from the belt bit into my skin and blood seeped down my torso. Let’s not forget the times that you ended up cutting me with God knows what. Fuck you, Hensley. Find yourself another girl. We are done. I am not coming back, and I am most certainly not yours. It’s just you and your hand, darlin’. Do yourself a favor and don’t be as rough with yourself as you were with me, because I’m telling you from experience that it fucking hurts. That is the last thing I have to say to you.”

I am a debut author, but most importantly, I am a mother of two beautiful kids. I am a wife to my soul mate and my better half, whom I was lucky enough to find when I was a child. Since the age of 15, we have been together, and there isn’t a moment that I regret. They say everyone has their person; I was lucky enough to find mine when I was just a kid. He and my children are my everything. They are my reason for existence.I love to read, write, play softball, watch baseball, and help coach my daughter’s softball team, and watch my son play his sports. We are always on the go, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I realize that one day there won’t be anyone to take to practice and games. I embrace the utter chaos that is our lives right now because it will be over before we know it.

I appreciate every single one of you that are reading this right now. There is one motto that I live by. It just sucks that it took losing someone really close to me to realize the truth about it. Don’t Look Back.

Danger steps up to the mic and clears his throat. Everyone looks up to the stage, and he smiles a knicker-dropping smile out to the patrons. I draw my bottom lip in with my teeth as even I squirm on my seat at that smile.

“Hey Adelaide, we’re Recoil, and we’re gonna blow your fucking minds!” he calls out and the crowd laughs, even some people cheer. Danger furrows his brows like he was expecting everyone to erupt into a frenzy of elation or something. He nods back to the drummer, and he kicks in the beat and then the music begins. As it filters off through the bar, the sound is amazing, euphoric even. It flows through me making the hairs on my arm stand to attention. Their sound is electrifying, and I love it.

Danger steps up to the mic and what happens next sets my soul on fire. His voice echoes through the mic and sweeps into my pores, flooding my veins, filling me up with warmth, like smooth honey being dripped all over me and then he’s licking it off so sexually it’s driving me crazy. I can’t even imagine how someone’s voice can sound so erotic, and so haunting, and so goddamned perfect at the same time. He’s mesmerizing, and as I stare at him moving around the stage and commanding that everyone pay attention, the entire room shifts and watches.

All eyes are on the band as the area fills with an electrical charge that flows through the air, flicking from one person to the next, connecting us all with the way he sings the lyrics and the energy he performs with. This guy’s a magician, and he has us all under his spell.
