My legs wobbled as I tiptoed into Henrik’s bedroom, careful to close the door behind me with a soft click. Moonlight streamed through the slightly parted curtains, casting a silvery trail on the floor that guided me across the carpet. I knelt by his bedside and watched his sleeping form, the gentle rise and fall of his bare chest—a chest I had stroked a hundred times but would never touch again. His lips fluttered, giving me pause. Lips I had kissed since I was thirteen and would miss as much as him. His mahogany locks fell over his forehead, a messed look that he never donned during the day but one I always loved to admire while he slept.

I lingered by his side, allowing the rhythm of my heart to slow, my eyes tracing over him, memorizing every visible detail for the final time. Gently, my fingers brushed the dimple of his chin, then slowly traced his cheeks, feeling the remnants of dried tears. They were not for his father but shed for me—for my pain. I couldn’t let him carry any more than he already had. I knew I was doing the right thing. He could go on to live a life full of promise, something I could no longer give him.

I’d ache for this: his face, the warmth of his companionship, the depth of our love. Yet, deep down, I knew I couldn’t offer him the future he deserved. Our dreams of marriage, of children playing along the seashore, of exploring the world together—those would remain unfulfilled fantasies. A heavy, uninvited burden had been thrust upon me, a path I had to walk alone. I couldn’t, wouldn’t, drag him into this dark journey and risk his soul to Hades.

Tears gathered at the corners of my eyes, threatening to spill over. “I love you,” I whispered, my voice a ghostly echo in the darkness. Gently, I lowered my lips to his, bestowing a final, fleeting kiss. I didn’t linger, couldn’t bear to, and our united lips parted too swiftly.

“I’ll never stop loving you. For all my days, you’ll have a sanctuary in my heart. In moments of despair or fury, I’ll delve into my memories of you. You’ll be my steadfast anchor, my unwavering light in the darkness. But I can’t return this love to you, not anymore.” My voice quivered as I inhaled sharply, steeling myself.

“You deserve a world of happiness, an eternal life of bliss.” With a heavy exhale, I placed my hands gently on the sides of his head. A surge of energy coursed through me, pulsating from my palms. The power within me awakened, vibrating with an intensity that resonated with the new, harsh shriek at the very core of my being.

His eyes blinked open, the dark green irises blending with his widened pupils, my name a faint sound on his lips. “Don’t.” He exhaled.

“I’m so sorry. It’s the only way.” My voice trembled. “I will see you again… in the afterlife.”

My arms shook under the strain, yet I maintained my hold, determined. One by one, I erased our shared moments from his mind: the laughter-filled day at the seaside festival, our playful sparring sessions, the intensity of our first kiss, the passion of our lovemaking, our bold adventures, and each time we’d defied the world with our love. Each memory, vivid and precious, slipped away from his consciousness. The essence of his thoughts, foreign to my senses, tasted of the ocean’s salt and the earthy musk of the woods. As I swallowed, they vanished from his mind, leaving a void where our love had once thrived.

When I stood, his eyelashes fluttered briefly before he settled back into a peaceful slumber. His cheek rested against the pillow, his breathing steady and calm. My hands trembled as I backed away, each step heavy with the weight of what I had done. Nausea churned in my stomach, the taste of guilt bitter in my mouth. I crept out of his room, closing the door behind me.

My head snapped up. Hope fisted my heart. “My parents? You spoke to them? What did they—”

“I thought The Freedom was pursuing Captain Fredrick and The Black Hollow,” Henrik interrupted. He took the book from my grasp and thrust it into Savina’s beckoning fingers.

“No. I haven’t spoken to them.” Savina addressed me before returning her gaze to Henrik. “And yes. They were following your father—or they are.” Savina gripped the sides of the ledger, her knuckles whitening. “We don’t know any more than that. Captain Fredrick’s ship and Medusa were seen in Sottom at the same time. We think there is a connection. We thought The Freedom was trailing them, but we lost contact. I don’t know where either ship or Medusa is now. That’s why I’m waiting for Conleth to return with news.”

My arms trembled. Where in the underworld had my parents gone?

Savina pointed to the wingback chairs next to a pair of end tables. “Sit.”

Henrik guided me across the room. His calluses scratched the threads of my blouse as he coaxed me down with gentle pressure on my shoulders. My knees wobbled, and I flopped into the seat.

“Is that why Captain Niles took interest?” Henrik asked. “He has stacks of Jacarian maps marked up with circles around mountain sides and x’s laid in front of cave entrances.” He arched an eyebrow. “What is he looking for?”

Savina looked down at the leather-bound book, then back up to Henrik. “Is that where these came from?” Her voice built like a thunderclap, lifting her half out of her seat. “Did you two board The Serpent’s Snare by yourselves and steal this?”

Before Henrik or I could confirm or deny, the king’s voice boomed behind us. “Savina, are you in there?”

The door swung open. I twisted, and the look of raw devastation marring Conleth’s face spurred me to my feet. His black hair stood on end as if he’d been pulling it. Creases of worry marred his lips. Behind him, my great-uncle Hermes scoured the room like a man who’d wandered away from a shipwreck, brown eyes red-rimmed. I’d never seen either man cry. Not much could break them, but I knew the sort of bereavement that painted the windows to their soul’s crimson would sever my heart as well.

“Oh, my gods. What happened?” Savina rounded the desk, stopping before her husband. “Tell me, Conleth. Who’s dead?”

The second she asked, I knew. Their missing ship, my uncles’ dried tears, the silence. I dropped to my knees, a sob wracking my chest.

“No, no, no.” Impossible. My father was a demi-god born from Apollo and Calliope with the power to heal and bring men to their knees with his song; my mother, Lou, the fierce captain of the first all-female-crewed pirate ship, The Freedom. Together, they’d navigated the seas with the greatest warriors and battled amidst the waves like gods. Poseidon’s kingdom was their domain. No enemy could thwart them there.

“Cal?” Henrik called out, but Conleth quickly moved in front of him, blocking his path to me.

Hermes ignored everyone else. With an ease only my great-uncle possessed, he walked over and knelt to cradle my head in his hands.

I fought his embrace as my chest threatened to collapse and crush my heart. I refused to believe they were gone.

“Let me go!” Henrik shouted at Conleth, but I didn’t dare look at him.

“I’m so sorry,” my uncle whispered.

“My parents are dead. Are you sure?”

Hermes’s nod tore a sob from Savina. He rubbed his thumbs under my eyes, catching the droplets on his skin. Uncontrollable tears gushed like a river that escaped its bed.

I swallowed the giant knot that had twisted in my throat. “I don’t believe you. It can’t be.” My father grew up with sirens. He swam with them. His peers called him the Emperor of the Sea for a reason. How could he possibly die on the water? And my mother. She embodied the tides, the very salt-water air she breathed. How could she just be gone?

“It’s true.” My uncle reached for me.

I shook my head. None of this made sense. “My brother?” Adelphi had been on The Freedom as well. My parents would never let someone steal his soul away to the underworld. Not if they could help it.

“Also gone.” Hermes dropped his arms.

A burning fury surged through me, scorching my grief down to hot embers. “Who killed my family?”

My uncle looked away for the first time, his almond-shaped eyes darting over my head. Without meeting my gaze, he breathed, “Captain Fredrick of The Black Hollow.”

“You’re staring.” He passes me a pouch. “Am I?” The peanuts are warm in my hand. The scent of caramelized sugar tickles my nose. “Now you’re flushing. If I didn’t know better I’d say you’re having naughty thoughts about the side of my digits.” I choke on a nut. My eyes water. “I think the reference is to shoe sizes.” I make a point to glance at his snickers. “Twelves, baby.” He wiggles a brow. This time I chomp on the nut before it goes anywhere near my throat. “I was thinking your hands belong to a mechanic not a person working in city hall.” “Give me half a chance and I can show you what these hands are good for.” “Travis…” I flush, not because I’m a prude, but because despite the lovely evening, Charity’s dad is at the edge of my thoughts. I blame Charity for mentioning him, for convincing him to visit Candy Cane. Most of all, I blame myself for falling for a man who didn’t know I existed beyond being his daughter’s best friend. “Get your head out of the gutter,” Travis says with a smile that I wished set my heart on fire. “I noticed you didn’t have any Christmas decorations up yet. Any later and the entire town will write to the big man himself.” He glances around him, then whispers. “Or worse, put a complaint in with the city.” I groan. He’s only half joking. Candy Cane had a Christmas committee of four grandmothers that took their positions as seriously as the mayor. There hasn’t been a change in membership since Carter was president and unless one died, their word is law when it comes to Christmas. “I’ve just been—” “Hey, no need to explain.” But I want to. Want to share my good news with someone other than Charity. “I recently received good news that will help my business.” “That’s amazing.” “And nerve racking but it’s an opportunity to grow.” “You’re not trying to let me down easily, are you?” He searched my face. I shook my head. “No.” This is my chance to have a fresh beginning all around. It is definitely time I put a stop to this madness I feel for Nathan and get a hold of my love life. I realize that I went about my dating life the wrong way. Pushing Travis away or engrossing myself in work isn’t the answer to forgetting Nathan Dawan. Dating is. Nights like tonight are. We are at the end of the path. The end of a beautiful evening. “Sorry it took so long to make tonight happen.” He paused, taking my hand. I stared at our hands. This was nice in a gentle, reassuring sort of way. My middle didn’t flutter from the mere thought of him and his name didn’t have my pulse racing. “You’re worth the wait Naomi Waters.” We’re caught in a loop of staring into each other’s eyes. I will myself to relax, drown in the blue sea staring back at me but all I see are Nathan’s dark intense eyes that mimic the howling winds of a category four hurricane. Travis leans in and my stomach flutters. The feeling is so unexpected that my eyes widen instead of closing in anticipation of our first kiss and I gasp. He tosses his peanuts aside to cup my cheek. My lips part to tell him to wait…that I’m not ready, but no words escape. Not a single one. The distance closes between us and I slam my eyes such, too afraid he’ll see my thoughts for another man in my eyes. The first kiss I’d shamelessly envisioned having with him. “You really shouldn’t litter,” came an icy tone. Shit. Shit. I’m even hearing his voice. Squeezing my eyes tighter, I pucker my lips like a tenth grader and concentrate on what is about to happen. “Naomi!” Nathan growls, the sound bouncing behind my eyelids. I try harder to block him out. He’s only in your imagination. I count to five and wait.

“How dare you speak to my landlady before I did?” Alice sneers as soon as I walk through the front door. I frown and place the box I’m carrying on the floor. Jesus, she’s been waiting for me. Straightening, I pull the sleeves of my sweater up to my elbows as she narrows her eyes. My hands drop to my hips and I let out a long sigh. That’s all I seem to do nowadays: sigh. What an exasperating woman. “Alice,” I say, a hint of frustration in my tone. “She was going to make you give her a month’s notice, remember? Pay her additional charges? This way, she felt pressured into letting you go. You know, with me being your boss and all. And my family’s name.” Alice shakes her head. “I was hoping she’d let me keep the flat. That she’d give me a payment plan once I went back to work. I thought she’d be open to it.” Alice screws up her face as if she’s about to cry, and I can’t help but take a step forward and grab her hand. “Sweetheart …” “I don’t understand.” Alice’s other hand shoots up to cover her mouth. “She always liked me, and I could’ve paid her at least another month’s rent. I’d owe her, what, two months at the most? But she wouldn’t listen. She wouldn’t even hear me out.” “Alice …” I start, and that’s when Ryan comes in, pushing two large suitcases into the hall. He cringes when he notices Alice, but by then it’s too late. “Are those my things?” she gasps before throwing me the dirtiest look of all time through her tears. And if up until then I wasn’t sure if I’d made it onto her shit list, there’s no doubt in my mind I’m at the very top of it now. “You went through my stuff?” she shrieks, pulling her hand away from mine and taking a few steps back. “You went through my flat?” Shit! “Sweetheart, calm down. Your head …” “Don’t tell me to calm down, you … you big, overbearing, controlling asshole!” she screams, and my eyebrows shoot up. That’s the first time she’s ever sworn in front of me, yelled at me, since knowing who I am, and I must confess I’m surprised. Maybe even a little impressed. I glance over at Ryan and he presses his lips together. The look in his eyes is pity and amusement at the same time as he tries to stop his grin. Fucker. “I can’t believe you did this. I can’t … I can’t …” Alice sways a little as she presses her hands to her temples, a moan of pain escaping her lips. And I don’t even think. In two strides I’m holding her up by her waist. “Alice. Alice!” I pick her up, and she wraps her arms around my neck, her head leaning on my shoulder as she screws her eyes shut. “Sebastian,” she murmurs, and I press my lips to her hair. “I’ve got you, baby. I’ve got you. It’s OK. Let’s just get you into bed and medicated. You’ll be all right in no time. I promise.”

A sound like a canvas snapped taught. One, twice, thrice. A steady beat, with long pauses as the wretched creature glided on air currents. And in those pauses, I tried to deny. No, it couldn’t be what I thought.
His damned eagle. Enormous. Ruthless. Ravenous.

And then the next wingbeat slapped the air, and the bird blotted out the stars.

I thrashed, all stoic dignity gone as the eagle circled, head cocked so a golden eye roved my exposed chest. My heart pounded in my ears. I heard my breath inside my head—short and frantic, undercut with sporadic, feral grunts like feeble war cries to try and keep my nerve. But it had already failed me.

“The fat and the bones,” Zeus rumbled, a low purr of unforgotten rage and savage pleasure.

“You’d give me fat and bone, and let those worms have their fill?” He rose up to loom over me once more, voice rising until it shook the mountain beneath my back. “I, who delivered you from the tyranny of our fathers. I, who took you into my arms and into my confidence when you crossed the battlefield lines.” His spittle hit my face as his eagle’s massive feet slammed into the rock on either side of me, beak clicking. “Fat and bone! I don’t even feed my pets such scraps.” He reached up to stroke the eagle’s neck, and it ruffled russet and brown feathers, head twitching this way and that, looking for the perfect spot to dig that wicked, hooked beak. “No.

Tonight, and every night, he shall feast on a choice delicacy.”

“No.” My cheeks puffed will bull-like breaths, muscles tearing as I fought to break free. “No. This? This for a nick to your pride? This because you cannot see that the only difference between you and a reviled human king is a little bolt of—”

Zeus stepped back, snarling. The eagle’s head dove down. And the world went black and red. Embers crackled at the edges of my vision. Agony so searing nothing else existed. Heat. Fire turned against me. The world smeared into dark colors. Flashes of sky. Cries for death, for vengeance, for mercy all tumbled out of my mouth in a nonsensical jumble. A flash of yellow as the beak tore a sliver of something loose, tipped back its head, and gobbled it. Cracks fissured the world and my will to live. And through it all, Zeus laughed.

He never returned after that first night, but his eagle did. And sometimes, when I began to forget myself, forget my name, forget my purpose, drowned in the sheer immensity of the pain, I heard the ghost of that laugh on the wind.

The bus stops, and I fly through its halfway-open doors as if the Devil himself is chasing me Oh, God. Oh, God. Oh, God! My soles squeak on the pavement, my face is a sweaty, flustered mess, and I feel like I’m about to faint by the time I reach the Hunter Corp. “Good morning!” I shout at the guards, who all smirk, but thankfully hold one of the lifts open for me. Grr, no time for breakfast either. I shake my head and, getting inside the elevator, press the button for my floor. I hate it when my days begin like this. Stupid, stupid bus was twenty minutes late! And now I can’t even get coffee before I start work. “Coffee!” I groan out loud, dropping my head back until it rests on the wall. Oh, what I wouldn’t give for a hazelnut latte right now. The lift dings and I run through the open doors and down the corridor like a maniac. I drop my handbag under the desk and throw my coat over my chair. I turn on the lights, the computer, and the printer and am just about to sit to replace my trainers with the sensible heels I wear in the office when I notice the silence. No beeping, no humming, no flashing lights, nothing. “What’s wrong, sweetie?” I coo, petting the dark monitor. I find our electronic equipment temperamental, and a little TLC usually goes a long way. I press the ‘on’ button again, and still nothing happens. OK. The main lights are on—even with the big windows surrounding us, the overhead lights are always on during the day. And the printer is also working. So the computer must be unplugged somehow. That, or the IT guy who was here on Friday screwed up and I’ll have to call him again. The socket is somewhere on the floor under the desk. “Well, no time like the present,” I mutter, getting on my hands and knees and crawling under the damn thing. Hmm, the plug is in, so maybe it’s the socket that’s off. I feel around until I find the switch … and then there’s that familiar sound of electronic equipment coming back to life. “OK, baby, you’re all better now.” I smile, crawling out backwards when a deep, baritone voice says from behind me— “Who are you? And what the fuck are you doing under the desk?” Startled, I let out a yelp and jerk upwards. The back of my head hits the very edge of the desk hard. “Aaah!” I hear my anguished scream and screw my eyes shut. Pain stabs through my brain, making me crouch even lower to cradle my head. “Mmm,” I moan, dazed. Little white dots appear behind my eyelids, and I swoon from side to side. God, it really is like seeing stars, isn’t it? “Shit! Are you OK?” Big hands close around my waist and I’m suddenly lifted into an upright position. Oh, bad idea. Bad idea. Dizzy and with a throbbing headache, I feel my knees wobble and I’m sure I’m going to pass out. I fall against the hard wall behind me. “I got you, sweetheart. I got you.” An arm slips under my knees and I’m lifted into the air. I take a chance opening my eyes, and through the dizziness see the most beautiful face I’ve ever seen on a man. The electric-blue eyes looking down at me are so intense, I feel they can see right into my soul. I shiver and look away, my eyes closing again, turning everything black.

“May the Fates smile upon me.” Rylander stared at the ceiling as if summoning the gods themselves. “She’s nervous about the consummation of the wedding.”

The words rolled off his tongue so fast it took me a moment to absorb their meaning. But as I did, laughter bubbled up and soon erupted out of my mouth. “I’m so sorry.” I held my stomach as I continued to chortle, rocking my torso with the vibration. “I don’t know what to say but…” I swallowed, trying to compose myself.

Rylander’s shoulders tightened, lifting toward his reddened ears.

I coughed to choke my amusement. “I am sorry for my mirth. It’s just I hadn’t really given the matter much thought.” Because there would be no marriage, but of course, I couldn’t explain that to King Rylander. I placed my hand on the king’s arm as I did to steady my men. “I had hoped the princess and I could find friendship first and see where that leads. If that’s agreeable to you.”

The king rubbed his hands over his face, letting out a long breath. “Gods, thank you.”

I squeezed his bicep before letting go. “Well, this has been an…”

“Rye.” Footsteps sounded. “Rye, where are you?” A familiar voice—heard only once but carved deep in the channels of my mind—yelled as the doors to the throne room swung open and hit the adjacent wall.

Fiery hair framing perfect heart-shaped face and a slim frame stormed into the room. Exertion painted her cheeks pink. “Did you know the duke is here, in the kingdom. He failed to…” Her blue eyes widened as they connected to mine. Her mouth dropped open.

I tilted my head. My throat felt thick, my words sticking there. This couldn’t be…

“Duke of Eloqua, may I introduce my sister, the Princess of Cava.” Rylander waved between us. “Princess, this is—”

“You wretched man!” The princess paced into the room, practically breaking into a jog. Her gaze traveled my face as my heart plunked into the pit of my stomach. “You…. How are you even…”

Rylander stood aghast, appraising us.

Out of all the fair maidens! The Fates were more humorous than I gave them credit for. I didn’t know whether to pummel the old gals or kiss them. But when Savina’s cheeks inflamed, I knew my curse would at least be enjoyable.

My lips pulled into a lopsided grin. I extended my hand. “The name’s Conleth. And yours?”

The princess’s hands curled into fists by her sides. “None of your damn concern.”

I push open the heavy glass door of our office building, the cold, San Francisco December air hitting my cheeks. I hurry inside, my heels clicking on the polished marble floors. As I make my way past the rows of cubicles, I catch a glimpse of myself in the dark computer screens – my curly hair bouncing around my shoulders, my brown eyes peering out from under thick lashes. I plop down at my desk, setting my coffee, purse and laptop bag down. I boot up my computer, the screen lighting up. Numbers, always numbers. Sometimes I dream in debits and credits. As I open up the latest expense reports, my mind drifts to the coming holidays. While my coworkers chat about their ski trips and what parties they’ll attend, I’ll be spending Christmas in the real cold with my sister and her family in Virginia. The thought of the frigid winter depresses me. I crave sunshine on my skin, sand between my toes. But my traitor parents left the city for a Caribbean cruise, so it’s whether a solo holiday in my apartment or family time on the East Coast. I’m interrupted from my daydream by the ringing of my phone. I smile when I see the name flash on the screen. “Hey Lisa!” I answer. My best friend’s bubbly voice comes through the receiver. “Ami! How’s my favorite girl?” We chat about life, work. As always, her law firm is keeping her busy. Then Lisa asks me about my holiday plans, and I sigh. “Pfff, my parents went on their cruise. So it’s Virginia with my sister or just me, takeout, and Netflix. I’ll live vicariously through your tropical vacation pictures.” Lisa gasps. “Oh my god! I can’t believe I didn’t think to invite you sooner. Come down to my parents’ beach house with us!” My eyes go wide. THE beach house? In Florida? That sounds like a dream. But imposing on their family holiday… “Are you sure that’s okay?” I ask hesitantly. Lisa scoffs. “Of course! You know Mom and Dad love you. And I could really use my bestie to help with all the holiday activities’ organization.” I chew on my bottom lip, considering. A warm beach vacation with Lisa and her awesome family does sound amazing. Way better than sitting alone in my apartment or going to freeze my butt at Marie’s. “Alright, I’m in!” I finally say. Lisa squeals in excitement. And as we discuss travel plans, I can’t keep the grin off my face. No snow for me this Christmas – I’m heading for sunshine and sand! Lisa fills me in on the details – I’ll fly into Tampa next week and drive down to the Keys to meet them. “And we can talk about you and my brother,” she teases. I feel my cheeks heat. Lisa laughs. I suck my teeth. “Girl, leave me alone.” Truth is, I’ve had the biggest crush on Kareem Mason forever. The first time Lisa invited me to her house back when we were in high school and became inseparable. But he’s always been older, cooler, waaayyy out of my league. And now, he’s a successful, rich and famous basketball player. I’m just me – no way he’d ever look at me as more than his little sister’s best friend. The thought of him makes my pulse quicken. I push that to the far corners my mind. “I’m just looking forward to sunshine and piña coladas,” I say breezily. “Uh huh, sure,” Lisa teases. “Well, I better get back to it. I have no intention of taking any work with me, and I hope you do the same. Get ready for the best holiday ever, bestie!” We say our goodbyes and I set the phone down, shaking my head with amusement. A week lounging on the beach sounds like heaven. I start mentally packing my bikinis and sunscreen, daydreaming about crystal blue waves.
