After she took a seat across from me, I downed my greens and potatoes before forking the meat. “Is this… is this bodies of the men you’ve killed?”

Venom raised her dark brows before placing a delicate hand to her chest and letting out a melodic laugh that sprang a smile to my own face. To see her laugh, to be the cause of that laughter…

“Men would taste disgusting.” She took a sip of her wine, still chuckling. “Could you imagine? No, bellflower. That is duck. However, I wouldn’t mind a taste of you.”

Almost choking on my buttery bite, I washed it down with the fruit forward red beverage. Was this all a ploy to fatten me up and… eat me? And why did that idea send jolts of lightning to the spot between my thighs?

But before I could entertain a response better than the one I’d offered earlier, I yelped, almost spilling my drink. A striped red and yellow snake was slithering down the table runner. “Why so many snakes?” I whined, inching back in my seat. “They’re so terrifying. Truly, I hate them.” My breathing quickened as I spotted more that I hadn’t noticed as one slid down the piano keys, bringing about a brash and eerie sound.

Lady Venom stroked a gentle finger over the striped serpent as it made its way down the table’s leg. “Yes. Such a shame you didn’t wander into Lady Bunny’s den. Alas, here we are. The snakes are extensions of me, in a sense. They feed off my mood. So they won’t harm you. Unless you make me mad, that is.”

“Oh, devils. I’m sure I’ll eventually make you mad. Will you tell them not to bite me at least?” I begged. Though, despite my fear, my smile hadn’t faded.

“Mm, but what about me? What if I want to bite you? It’s me or the snakes.” She swirled her wine seductively and pushed her chair out but didn’t stand. “Come here, Poesy.”

My body froze and ignited at the sound of her command. “You said you don’t bite,” I murmured weakly. Praying I could still remember how to stand, how to walk, I did as I was told. When I was within reach, she took my hands again and stood me in front of her as she sat like a queen on the throne. She gave my body a slow appraisal, her gaze sweeping to my feet and then ascending, pausing around my middle, my breasts, and resting on my eyes. My heart pounded in my chest as I awaited her every word and graceful movement.

“Do you know what it means to be a mistress?” she asked, her voice huskier than before.

I swallowed, suddenly feeling warm and tingly all over, fighting the urge to lean into her. “No,” I admitted.

She stood then but pulled my palms toward her so my breasts collided with hers and our noses touched. Her breath was sweet as she spoke to the torrent of want raging inside me. “It means you will do, and be, anything I require. It means that I own you, your body. Your every desire and pleasure are mine.”

“Yes,” I whispered breathlessly.

“Good girl,” she answered before lightly skimming my lips with hers. “Take this off,” she ordered, spinning me around and unzipping the back of my dress.

Acoustics trembled down the path to the guillotine as my mother fluffed my outrageous creampuff dress. “I look like a goose,” I grumbled as she tied a thick pink bow around my neck. My collar, my leash, my cattle chain.

“You look fit for a lord.” She preened. “He will be so pleased when he sees you.”

I hated that. I wished to tangle my hair, blister my skin, and wear dirty potato sacks for all of time so men like him would never glance at me twice again. Fuck, where is my bra?

After Fisher took off my dress, I flung my bra somewhere. I’m not about to leave without it since it’s the only one I packed. I don’t need my piercings blinding my family.

As I lower to my hands and knees, crawling around with my ass straight up, I find it underneath his jeans.

Thank God.

Next, I dig in my bag for my panties.

It’s one thing to make the walk of shame at seven in the morning, but it’s shameful to do it commando.

And I am a classy Southern lady, after all.

With the exception of last night.

Once I’m dressed and slide on my boots, I grab the rest of my things. Fisher hasn’t stirred once since I climbed over his naked body and slid out of his bed. I’m half tempted to check his neck for a pulse.

The place is quiet and never fails to bring a strong since of comfort every time I walk through the doors. I kick out of my shoes and wet sweater and make my way for the master shower. The house is huge and technically has four master bedrooms and three smaller bedrooms. My family bought it back in the nineties with their best friends and our two families have been vacationing here ever since. Bonnie and Carl Mathews and of course, Soren. A man who haunts my wet dreams to this very fucking day but couldn’t be more off limits. After a terribly embarrassing incident when I was eighteen, I’ve avoided my childhood crush completely. Until right this second. I think a squeak comes out of my mouth or maybe its a moan. Either way my feet are firmly fused to the floor as I stare shocked and honestly in awe of the gorgeous man in front of me. “Robin!” He shouts in obvious surprise. I’m sorry for barging in, I couldn’t hear the shower over the pelting rain.” I say pointing up at the ceiling trying my best to look at his face as he stands in the doorway, a crisp white towel hanging lose on his hips. Tattoo covered hips. “I’ll just grab my bag.” “Ok.” I say, but the question burns and after fifteen years why hold back anything. “Did you want to sleep in here?”

She was surprised to see the duke walking into the bedchamber so early in the afternoon. The door remained open, and the maid hovered there. Deep inside, where she held all her secretive

improper thoughts, Catherine wished they were alone without a chaperone. Perhaps then she would learn even more hidden complexities about the duke. And she so wanted to know everything.

“Good afternoon, Catherine. Yesterday you mentioned needing some fresh air, and I have considered this. The physician believes you are healing well so a short visit outside is in order.”

Catherine’s face lit up with a smile. She longed to feel the sun caress her skin and to breathe dew kissed air. She was pleased to learn that James would indulge her.

“I have had cook prepare us a hamper, and we shall have a picnic in the garden.”

“I am most grateful, James.”

A ghost of a smile touched his mouth, and he briefly dipped his head. “Well, that is settled, and everything is prepared. Now, we must have regard for the physician’s instructions. You cannot

stand on your feet, so I shall lift you, and take you there. Shall we?”

Lift her? There gazes collided and suddenly she knew without any doubt that the duke’s heart was pounding as harshly and loudly as hers. There was something in those hazel eyes, a guarded

awareness yet a delight. As if he had longed to hold her closer.

“Yes,” Catherine replied in a soft murmur, releasing the edges of the sheets that she’d gripped.

James padded over and scooped her effortlessly from the bed. She was so close to his face that her eyes were suddenly drawn to his lips before she quickly averted her gaze.

She placed one arm around his neck and the other on his shoulder. Her heart jerked and Catherine marveled at the feel of his muscles beneath her fingertips. It was rather uncanny, but she
