“What if I told you I could help you with that little problem?”

My brows furrowed as his gaze dropped to my clenched hands. He couldn’t possibly know… then I spotted the ring of yellow around his blue irises.

What did yellow mean?

I’d known this once upon a time…

It doesn’t matter.

I chose to play dumb. “What problem?”

Knox smirked and leaned forward. “Your uncontrollable need to burst into flames, of course.” His voice dropped, his Scottish brogue brushing over nerves that perked right up and sent a shiver down my spine.

And then his words registered.

I stiffened. “I don’t have a—”

“It’s okay, Firefly. We can help you,” the redhead, Finlay, whispered.

I studied them both, Veronica’s words echoing in my ears. They weren’t giving me creepy vibes. If anything, they felt strangely familiar.

Their proximity alone made my power settle down. It purred in my chest for the first time in months.

“How?” The word fell from my lips, almost lost in the noisy bar.

“A kiss,” Knox said as if it were nothing at all.

Surely not.

“I promise it will help.”

“I don’t know you.” My gaze roamed the pair of them, taking in the details I couldn’t make out across the bar.

A playful glint danced in Knox’s blue eyes, matching the confident quirk of his soft, kissable lips. It was at total odds with his friend’s quiet energy. Finlay’s freckles added a touch of boyish charm. He smiled but there was a tension running through him that made him seem uneasy, almost out of place in the bustling bar, as if he belonged in the quiet company of books.

Magic clung to them as it did all witches, only the flavours changed to match our powers, just as our eyes did — Knox’s felt dynamic and shifting, while Finlay’s had a steady, grounding quality.

But the most striking thing? I felt safe.

Both men exuded an oddly comforting energy, like a warm blanket on a cold night. It was as if just their presence soothed the restless flames inside me.

“How do I know your promises mean anything?”

“You don’t.” Knox leaned against the bar, while his soft gaze devoured me. “You just have to trust your gut, Sparky.”

Sparky. Firefly. No one had ever given me a nickname and two strangers felt they could? Even more surprising, I didn’t feel the need to bristle. The attention washed over me,  wrapping me up in a blanket of intimacy I should have wanted to reject. The half-hearted words to do so froze on my tongue.

“Okay,” I said, shocking myself.

Coveting my brother’s girlfriend is one thing, but acting on it is a step too far. It’s too bad it’s a step I’ve already taken.

The first time I met Maggie Sullivan, she was my brother’s guest at Sunday dinner. That should have been enough to keep me away. It wasn’t.

The night I lost control and gave into my passion was also the night of my brother’s arrest for selling drugs—a business I was sure Maggie must have had a hand in.

Overwhelmed with guilt, I seized a chance to try out for Center Stage, a televised singing competition. Winning changed my life.

Now, years later, I’ve returned to Little Falls to reconnect with my family, and Maggie Sullivan has somehow managed to become mayor.

With only twenty-four hours until she’s reelected uncontested, I decide to throw a wrench into her perfect life.

When the race heats up, and old, unwanted feelings surface, I start to realize that Maggie might not fit the box I’ve shoved her into all these years.

Soon, I’m wondering if I want to steal the election, or if the real victory lies in winning Maggie’s heart.

My body was a traitor. I’d spent the last hour staring at the center of his chest instead of his stupid chiseled face, not giving him the satisfaction of making eye contact. What would I see in Grady’s eyes when I glanced up? Twelve years ago, we’d been this close, closer, and those eyes stole a piece of my soul. I couldn’t afford to give any more away.

With a deep breath, I stepped back and stared at him. He was stupidly tall and broad. I couldn’t remember exactly how tall. Six foot five, maybe? Enough to hurt my neck if I was too close, barefoot, and looked up for too long. I squared my shoulders and gave him a sugary smile. “You must be thirsty.” My tone was so sweet it dripped syrup. “All that singing would be hell on your voice. No need to speak.” I held up a hand in the direction of his face. “I wouldn’t want you to strain your precious vocal cords.”

Grady’s brown eyes scanned me, and I tried to decipher the emotion behind them. Amusement and something else I couldn’t place. He chuckled and raised his bottle of water. “No need to worry, Maggie May. I don’t make a living off my voice anymore, so I can let it get as rough as it needs to be.”

The familiar timbre sent an unexpected jolt through me. I hadn’t heard his voice in person since that night. Goose bumps rose on my arms, and I yanked my sweater tighter. “My middle name isn’t May.”

His lips quirked up, unrepentant, and he didn’t respond. Someone tried to get his attention. He shook his head and gave them an apologetic smile, gesturing toward me. “We’re catching up.” The crowd around him thinned back.

“No, we’re not,” I muttered.

His lips quirked again, but he didn’t say anything.

“You’re back in town, then? Trying to make something of your life?” I jutted out my chin and crossed my arms. Any sense of playing nice disappeared. The goose bumps on my skin were from disgust, nothing else. I hated him.

He scanned the crowded bar. “Seems to be a few people who think I’ve already made something of myself.” He shrugged. “But they’re probably easily impressed—give them a glossy surface and they’ll root for anyone.” He directed his pointed gaze at me and sipped his bottle of water. “I heard you’d graduated from ruining one man’s life to taking down a whole town. Little Falls still standing, or have you demolished it as well?”

His mother lived in Little Falls on the opposite side of town to my family. Penny Castillo had put my sign on her lawn during the previous election. Of all the conflicts I had helped to settle over the last four years as mayor, none of them caused my blood to boil like Grady was doing right now. He knew nothing about anything.

Leaning forward on my toes, I said, “I’ve spent the last four years looking after the people you abandoned while you chased fame and fortune.” I raised my eyebrows in a challenge. I’d been the one to help Penny Castillo fix her garage when a windstorm had taken off half the roof; I’d been the one who picked up Trent from jail when he was finally released; I’d been the one to find his brother a job a few towns over when no one else wanted to hire him. What had Grady done? Won a singing contest and disappeared.

“Only four years?” His intensity drilled into me. “What was Trent’s sentence again?”

I hated the heat creeping into my face.

Rage.

The heat was from rage and not humiliation. “It’ll be me looking after them for another four years twenty-four hours from now.”

“What are you talking about?” His sharp gaze turned curious, thoughtful.

My jaw ached from holding back the diatribe threatening to explode out. “I’m running uncontested for another term as mayor of Little Falls.”

Grady pinched the bridge of his nose and then looked toward the ceiling. “Uncontested?”

“That’s right. Uncontested,” Lila said, appearing out of nowhere to throw her arm around my shoulders. Her words were slurred, but I was so glad for the backup, her level of drunkenness didn’t matter. “It’s because she’s the best fucking mayor in any town anywhere.”

Throwing back his head, Grady laughed. “In any town anywhere?”

With a frown, Lila used one finger and pressed it into his broad chest. “Yes! God. Why do you have to be such a hot prick?”

I clamped my hand over Lila’s mouth. In the morning, Lila would regret those words. “She meant the prick part. The hot part is the Jell-O shots talking. Everyone in this bar is hot to her right now.”

“What makes you so sure no one is going to run against you at the last minute?” Grady’s eyebrows lifted, and he raised his bottle to his lips again.

Lila laughed through my hand and removed it from her face. “Because they’d have to own property in town, get enough supporters or file as an independent, and they’d have to think they could beat Maggie. No one is that dumb or that desperate.” Considering how drunk Lila appeared to be, I was impressed with how smoothly her little speech spilled out of her. “And,” Lila added, holding up her finger, “we know everyone who fits the criteria, and they’re not running.” She cocked an eyebrow at Grady and flicked out a hip. “Maggie’s got it in the bag.”

On instinct, I wanted to correct Lila, but the expression on Grady’s face made me hold my tongue. Technically, Lila wasn’t wrong, but I didn’t like the way Grady’s gaze turned calculating as it dragged across us. He chuckled to himself, and a hint of amusement lit his face.

A Hispanic woman I didn’t recognize appeared at the edge of our circle. “Sorry to bother you, Mr. Castillo. But we were hoping to get a selfie and an autograph? You’re like the biggest celebrity around here.”

“Sure.” Grady half turned toward his fan. The smile on his face had faded at the request. “Ladies.” Grady pointed his water bottle at us. “I’ll be seeing you around. I bought some prime real estate in Little Falls. Looks like we’ll be neighbors.”

I checked my watch. The first performer should have started five minutes ago. Running behind for some reason? Or fashionably late? Maybe the potential performers were intimidated by the large audience? I’d been here before with Lila for an open mic night, and the bar hadn’t been this packed.

The yellow curtain on the stage stirred. Kareena, the owner, burst through the gap to the small bit of stage in front. She looked flushed and too excited for a simple open mic night. “Ladies and Gentlemen.” She waited for everyone to quiet down.

I sat straighter in my chair. The place hummed with an unusual energy.

“Tonight, as some of you know—news like this spreads like wildfire—we have the privilege of a very special guest.” Kareena glanced behind her, her brown cheeks rosy. “Oh gosh, I am so excited.” She giggled and covered her mouth.

I frowned and eyed everyone in our party who looked equally confused. Other people in the crowd whooped and hollered as though they, too, knew the secret. What could be so special about some singer at open mic in a town barely bigger than Little Falls?

“I was going to do this big, long spiel about our guest, but he asked me to keep it simple since his appearance is last-minute. So, maybe I’ll let it be a surprise to those of you who don’t know yet.” Her grin was broad enough to split her face. “Enjoy the night, everyone!” With a flourish, she threw back the curtains and disappeared.

“That was weird,” Fernando muttered. “The only person I know who has ever inspired that kind of weirdness is—”

The curtain peeled back, and the chords of a familiar song started. My breath caught in my throat.

Grady Castillo.

I never uttered his name. Hadn’t spoken it in years. He’d burst onto the music scene with his stint on Center Stage, the talent discovery program, when I was at college in Florida. Lila had told me how crazy my town went over one of our own winning the top spot. A heap of money and a recording contract. When he only produced one successful album and then largely disappeared, I was thrilled.

“Well, I’ll be damned,” Fernando called over the familiar beat of the song. “I wonder what he’s doing back here.”

Once Doc and I were alone, he removed his reading glasses and placed them on the mahogany desk tucked against the righthand wall of the small gym. He leaned his hip against the edge.

“William, I know you care about Olivia, but your eagerness to safeguard her is exactly what will get her killed.”

“Excuse me?” I had thought he’d wanted to talk about the hunt, but this was about me? My conduct?

Doc remained calm. “I’ve never seen you like this.” He exhaled. “And as your closest thing to an uncle, I’m thrilled you found someone.” I attempted to object, but he held his finger up. “But you cannot protect her and be a supernatural hunter at the same time. It puts the lives of the humans you’re tasked with saving in jeopardy.”

Without thinking, I snapped back, “She doesn’t belong in our world.” My hands curled at my sides.

Doc shook his head like a disappointed parent. “If that were true, she wouldn’t have abilities. She not only belongs in our world, but she’s needed in it as well. If you can’t help her, then stay away from her. You’ll only hinder her growth.”

I barely heard him over the thudding in my ears. Did they all think I was the one putting her in danger? Anger festered in my gut. “What are you going to do about it?” I crossed my arms, challenging him. Did I sound like a child? Sure. Did I care? Hell no. Olivia’s safety was all that mattered.

Doc’s demeanor remained intact, but his tone turned authoritative. “Send you back to London. We could use a representative at the Hunterland Library to help Elizabeth.”

Tristan

I always get my way.

Fighting is my life. In the ring, on the street, there’s no problem that can’t be solved with my fists.

When an injury puts me on the sidelines, my family sends me down South on business. They want me to take over Doyle Whiskey, a job they claim is perfect for me.

And it is, until the owner’s daughter stumbles back into my life.

Evie’s not the shy, awkward girl I knew as a kid. She’s beautiful and fierce, and she doesn’t need me.

Until she does.

Just because I can’t step into the ring, it doesn’t mean I’ve forgotten how to fight. Especially for a girl like Evie.

Evie

Our marriage might be a sham, but our friendship isn’t.

When my father’s debts land him in hot water, there’s a lot more than just money on the line. My freedom is at risk, and if I don’t figure something out, I could end up married off as payment.

“I didn’t fuck you last night because you were on another planet. Not because I didn’t want you.”

“You don’t have to explain yourself,” she says, her face still turned away. “You were being decent, and I appreciate it.”

“Obviously, I do have to explain myself because you took off this morning.”

“It’s fine, Tristan,” she says primly. “I know I’m not your type.”

“Bold of you to assume that you know my type.”

Her eyes narrow slightly. “Maribelle was.”

“I was fifteen,” I say with a scoff. “Every girl was my type back then.”

She shakes her head the tiniest bit. “Not me.”

“Not when you were twelve, no. But things are a little different now,” I say, pushing my semi into the cradle of her hips a little to show her what I mean.

Evie sucks in a sharp breath, her eyes finally meeting mine.

“Why didn’t you tell me?” I roll to her side, giving her some room, but I don’t go far. Instead, I draw my fingertips up and down her thigh, watching her pupils dilate as goosebumps pebble across her petal-soft skin. “Why’d I have to find out from your skanky sister?”

A soft breath huffs past her parted lips. “Because I didn’t want you to know. You never should’ve found out at all.”

“Did you think I’d turn you down?” I ask quietly, unable to look away from those lips. I trail my fingers up the inside of her thigh, wondering if her other lips are the same shade of pink.

“I knew you would,” she says, breathing shallowly.

“But I told you, when we were going to get the marriage license, that we could …” I trail off, letting her fill in the blanks with her imagination.

“Be friends with benefits.” She grabs my arm as my fingers creep beneath the hem of her shorts, closing her eyes briefly before she focuses on me. “And I’m not into that.”

I can’t help the suggestive grin that takes over my face. “Don’t knock it till you try it.”

She wrinkles her nose, her grip tightening on my arm. “Be serious, Tristan.”

I bite back a smile. I prefer this Evie to the self-pitying one for sure. “You don’t want to catch feelings. But it’s too late because it sounds like you’ve had them for a while.” I hover over her for a second before brushing my lips over hers. Gazing into her eyes, I see everything she’s tried to hide from me bloom in full color. Dipping down, I give her another whisper of a kiss, catching my teeth on her bottom lip as I pull away.

She draws a shaky breath when I reach her panties. “Tristan,” she whispers, her throat working as she swallows.

I run my knuckles over the warm center of her, touching her softly on the outside as we look at each other. When her breathing stutters and her eyes start to go glassy, I slip beneath the fabric and kiss her again, slowly circling my tongue around the inside of her mouth as my fingers circle the entrance to her pussy.

With a small moan, she gives in, sliding her fingers into my hair.

“I’m not going to hurt you.” I keep my touch surface level, rubbing up and down her soft, wet slit with my fingers. “Quite the opposite, in fact. I’m gonna make you feel so good you’re going to wish you’d told the truth a lot sooner.”

Her eyelids flutter shut, her mouth dropping into a perfect O. Desire burns through me like a hot, consuming fire and I lick into her mouth again, sucking her tongue and swallowing all the little sounds she’s making. When my thumb sweeps her clit, her hips jerk, moving to meet my hand. Sensing that she’s close, I touch her a little harder, and she kisses me hungrily, grabbing at my hair as she comes. Her roughness, her responsiveness—shit, I’m so hard it hurts. I’m not even inside her, but she’s pulling me in like a riptide.

“You still want to keep this platonic?” I whisper, kissing her ear. “Because I don’t.”

“I don’t know what I want,” she says after a moment, her voice shaky. She releases me from her death-grip, her arms lax around me. “And I don’t know what you want from me. From this.”

No more teasing, then. Dropping a kiss onto her throat, I pull my hand out of her shorts and bring her up so she’s sitting across from me. Post-orgasm Evie is a stunner, with her rosy cheeks and swollen lips.

“I want you to be honest with me, for one thing,” I say. “Even when it’s hard. I promise I’ll do the same.”

She nods haltingly, her eyes watchful like she’s waiting for the other shoe to drop.

“I also want to see if you blush all over.”

She bites down on her lip, trying not to smile.

“I wanna know if you used to have dirty dreams about me, and if you did, I wanna act them out,” I add, smirking.

“God,” she says with a pained laugh, covering her face.

I release her hair from its messy, grass-studded bun, watching it fall around her shoulders. “We’re already married, Evie,” I say, leaning in to kiss her again. “We might as well have fun.

Blurb

Caught between family loyalty and their affection for one another…

But then Tristan shows up to take over our distillery. He’s as gorgeous as ever, but he’s not the sweet, mischievous boy I crushed on as a kid. He makes deals and takes what he wants and when he sees that I’m in danger, he takes me, too. In marriage.

I know he’s protecting his own interests by protecting me, but it doesn’t matter. I’ve wanted him my whole life, and I’ll do whatever it takes to protect him right back.

Because the queen’s the most powerful piece on the board.

Whiskey Kisses is a steamy, dark, Irish mob romance. Marriage of convenience, m/f, friends-to-lovers, forced proximity.

It’s the second book of the Gangland Hearts trilogy, which should be read in order. Recommended for mature audiences

“He and Danny Deschamps made an agreement. If I marry Cole, all of Daddy’s debts to them will be canceled. And then they’ll pay off his other debts, too, because we’ll all be one big, happy family.” Her voice breaks, and she covers her face.

Anger ripples through me like a stormy sea, frustration crashing against the shores of my restraint. Evie’s being bartered off like chattel to cancel her father’s debts? I knew that fucker was ruthless, but I never thought he’d stoop this low.

I squeeze her knee. “Your father can’t do that.” But he probably can. As bad as this is, I’ve seen worse. Men like Randall Doyle will do whatever it takes to cover their own asses. Even sacrifice the people they’re supposed to be protecting.

“He can, Tristan.” She’s breathing choppily, like she’s on the brink of hyperventilating. “I tried to talk him out of it, but he just got madder and madder. I live on his property … I have nowhere else to go. And even if I did leave, he’d find me. This is a small town—he knows everyone, and so do the Deschamps.” She looks up at me, her bright eyes wet and panicked.

“Is this why you avoided my calls today?” I shift to look at her, struggling to keep my voice even. “You should’ve told me right away.” Evie marrying Cole would be a disaster. Not only would it completely fuck our plans to take over Doyle’s distillery, but it would also bind Evie to someone she hates.

“Why, so you could counterattack?” Her eyes narrow, even as tears spill from them. “I wasn’t thinking about you, okay? I have enough shit to deal with on my own.”

She’s not totally wrong, but she doesn’t realize how much I actually care. About her, not just the distillery. “You’re not marrying that asshole, okay?”

Evie’s lower lip trembles. “Once my father makes a deal, there’s no going back.”

“He doesn’t own you,” I snap. “You’re a person, not property. And that distillery is mine.”

“But—”

“Don’t underestimate me. You have no idea what I’m willing to do,” I say softly, gripping her chin. “What I want to know is, what are you willing to do?”

She blinks as my hand slides away. “Anything,” she whispers.

“We’ve known each other for a long time, Evie, and despite all of this bullshit, you do know me,” I say. “Do you trust me?”

It takes a long time, but eventually she gives me a single nod.

“Then marry me instead.”

I’m having a glass of water in the kitchen when Conlan breezes through the back door, eyeing me as he tosses aside his wallet and keys. I should’ve gone straight to my room, but a part of me—the tipsy part, probably—craves confrontation. His behavior outside the bar just now was embarrassing.

“Sawyer, huh?” he says by way of greeting, brushing by as he reaches into the fridge. “Guess his patience finally paid off.” I turn around, putting my glass into the sink. The microwave opens and closes, beeping as he jabs at it. “I almost feel bad for him.”

Leaning against the counter, I give him the attention he’s so obviously seeking. “What are you talking about?”

“You must know he still wants you.” He mirrors my stance, folding his arms as we stare at each other from across the room.

“So what?”

“You’re just gonna play with his emotions like that?” His eyes widen, mocking me. “Didn’t think you were the type.”

“You’d know all about that, huh?” Picking up my purse, I push away from the counter. “Good night.”

“Good night?” An indulgent little smile tugs at his mouth. The same one he gives Liam when he’s being naughty at bedtime. “You say something like that and then, good night?”

Ignoring him, I leave the kitchen. But he follows me down the hall and up the stairs, every footstep intensifying the jitters in my stomach. I turn abruptly at my bedroom door, feeling cornered. “What, Conlan?”

“Are you going to see him again?”

I stare at him, trying to figure out this sudden interest when he’s been nothing but aloof since the day he hired me. “Are you serious?”

He steps closer, stopping only when I hold up a hand. “Answer the question.”

“Yeah, I probably will see him again. He’s sweet, and we had fun tonight.”

“Sweet, huh?” Conlan’s voice drops, dangerous and low. “That’s what you’re into these days?”

“What I’m into is none of your business,” I say evenly. “And neither is what I do in my free time.”

“I’m making it my business.”

“You’ll need to issue an addendum to my contract, then,” I grit out.

“Maybe I will.”

“You haven’t expressed one iota of concern for me since I got here, so please don’t start now.”

“You think I don’t care?”

“You barely talk to me.” Turning, I grab the doorknob. “I know you don’t care.”

“What is there to talk about?” His fingers wrap around my arm, and he tugs so I’m facing him again.

“You said we were ancient history.

Remember?” The way he smells is so familiar to me, even with the cologne he wears these days. It tugs at my heart, threatening to open old wounds I’d thought were long healed.

“Right, so why are you acting like a jealous ex?”

It’s more than I meant to say, but now that I have, I don’t regret it.

“Because it’s easy for him,” he says. “In a way it’ll never be for me.” My breath catches. Is this how he really feels, deep down beneath that ice-cold veneer? “What do you mean?”

Conlan shakes his head. “It doesn’t matter.”

“Why are you being so cryptic, Conlan? Just talk to me!” My voice cracks, and I pause to get myself under control. “We used to talk about everything.”

“Not everything.”

I go still, staring at him, willing him to tell me. I’d thought that something happened in the years between, but maybe it was already happening way back then, when we were together.

“You’re right, though. We did talk. You knew me better than anybody, except maybe Tristan.

“Sometimes I miss that.” He touches his knuckles to my cheek. “Sometimes I miss you.”

My heart leaps at his words, but it sinks just as fast. I can’t allow myself to get tangled up in this.

“You’re drunk.”

“That doesn’t change how I feel.”

Swallowing, I look up at him. “You’ll regret this tomorrow.”

His hand falls away. “Maybe.”

Reaching back, I open the door and step into my room. My cheek tingles from his touch as I close the door. A second later, his footsteps pad quietly away. I should feel vindicated. Conlan hasn’t forgotten. He still feels things. But somehow, it makes me feel even worse.

Because he might miss me, but he doesn’t want to.

Her smile froze in place as she opened the front door. All the air in her lungs seemed to disappear, as if she had been winded.

Jack. Jack Davies.

Sera was unable to do more than gape in confusion. She clutched the door handle, willing her body to action.

How many times had she opened her parents’ front door to see his smiling face that summer? How many times had she come to recognise his mood, just by taking in the set of his shoulders? It was an odd sensation. Like looking at the past but through a completely different lens.

It had been a little over ten years. But looking at him, she was transported back into the past.

Sera’s heart galloped in her chest, bringing her back to life even as the goosebumps flittered over her skin.

Jack bloody Davies.

Despite the easy smile on his expressive mouth— one that had always seemed ready for a laugh—the hard muscle at his shoulders carried tension. She could sense that energy even before his blue eyes confirmed it.

Jack’s black baseball cap sat low but did nothing to mask his devilishly handsome face. A face she knew, whilst altered by the years, as well as her own.

“Seraphina.”

His voice. That honey-smooth drawl—now peppered by his time in America—seized her heart.

She hadn’t a moment to blink before he stepped forward, engulfing her in his embrace.

Sera held on, surrounded by his citrus scent, startled by the hard planes of his body, flush against her own.

She stepped back because she really wanted to linger.

That zing of attraction sparked beneath her fingers, humming under the surface. It was only natural that her body remembered, even when her mind had tried so very hard to forget.

“Jack.”

His eyes raked over her face, her body.

“You’ve let the curls loose.”

Sera instinctively shoved back her mass of tumbling, wild hair. She had been going through a hair-straightening phase when she met Jack, which she had abandoned one summer morning when he had seen her out of the shower, loose curls free and unimpeded by chemicals. No man had looked at her with that much longing and pure lust since.

Then again, they had been young and… impressionable.

“Takes too long to straighten it these days and I have better things to do with my time. Tell me, why am I having a conversation about hair styling with Hollywood star, Jack Davies, in my parents’ hallway?”

Owen walked through the front door with a large bouquet of flowers, Ally in hand. “Sorry, we picked this stray up off the side of the road. Your mother insisted we bring him along.”

“They tried throwing me out of the car, but I’m like gum.”

“You stick?”

“Stretch. I’m very bendy.” He wiggled his eyebrows.

“And still inappropriate.”

Jack grinned. “It’s good to see you, Sera.”
