Prologue
I knew the moment I heard the words slip from the man in uniform that my world would be turned upside down. Shattered. Everything ended that dreadful day, including my will to live.

I throw myself over the casket after the preacher spoke words of peace and light. I grip the hard wood, bawling, refusing to let them sink this box to the bottom of that hole. No one attempts to stop me. They all watch in sorrow as I yell, asking God why. 
I finally feel my father and Josh’s father pull me away. They hand me the folded flag—the tainted reminder of all that is left of him. 
I stand in shock as they lower his body and cover him in dirt. I stare numbly at the mound of earth that now separates us. I will never see him again. I will never hear him again. Everything is destroyed. 
“We’ll take you home,” my mother says, but I shake my head. “Bri, it would be best if you left. Let’s eat something.” 
Turning to her, eyes void of emotion, I say, “Take me home and leave me there. I want to be alone.” 
In the silence of the car, they respect my wishes. I hold on to that flag as if it were Josh I was holding. 
“I want to be alone,” I tell them as they pull into the driveway before they choose to come inside with me. 
“But—”
“No, mom. Not today.” I get out of the car; the black of my dress feels heavy as I drag with me the darkness this day has brought. It’s real. As if I would somehow wake up and have dreamt the visit the officer and chaplain made not too long ago. 
As the door closes behind me, I lean against it—white contrasting to my black— and stare at this home. I calmly put the flag down on the console table. I walk a few steps in, grab the lamp and strike it onto the floor. I sweep my arms across the small table in the living room, causing everything on it to fall and break. The metal dish clings against the tile. 
“Ahhh!” My throat hurts from the exertion. I yell again and again until I’m sore. I shatter the vase with flowers my friends sent me. Water pours from the broken glass as the roses attempt to soak up the last bit. I walk to them and stomp them with my heel. They can’t live if he’s dead. 
I can’t live if he’s dead. I can’t live. I can’t. 
I fall onto my knees, the tears a common emotion for me, and look up at the heavens. “I only have one question, God; why’d you bring him to me to steal him away?” 
With that, I curl into my side and lose myself.

Did he ever think of our night together in the tent?

I did.

Without a doubt, I’d been tipsy, but I remembered everything. For so many years there was tension between us. It started as annoyance, my best friend’s older brother who always acted like a douche. Then, after he joined the Army and came back to visit, it was like he’d matured just enough to lose that obnoxious edge and I realized for the first time how sexy he was. I wanted him. Back then, pursuing guys had been my vice, but I knew Amber might be weirded out by it.

When I thought back to that night at the nature reserve…it was really our last night of true freedom and happiness. It’s strange to think we were happy, especially since our parents had been taken prisoners at that point, and we’d watched his grandfather be killed, but we still had hope. We thought we’d get our parents back. We didn’t have any idea just how horrible things were. Or that aliens were real.

I rubbed the prickly hairs on my arms down and took another bite. I didn’t want to think about that night in the tent. The sound of Tater’s laughter. His wide smile. The way the neck of my loose shirt had slid down while I was arranging my sleeping bag and laughing drunkenly. His warm mouth as he kissed me on my exposed shoulder…when I turned to him, Tater had never looked more serious. It had been a look of question, like, “Is this all right?” And I’d responded by sliding my hand behind his neck and pulling him down on top of me.

Now he never smiled or laughed.

“How are things in the fields?” I asked him.

Tater gave a single shrug, not looking up or saying a word.

“If you’re wondering,” Linette said with spite, “Things are amazing with the livestock. I can fill a bucket with milk in record time, and helped a mama swine birth seven piglets yesterday. I’m a regular fucking Farmer Jane.”

Before I could respond, Tater whispered, “I need you to get us a radio.”

Our end of the table went silent and still. I glanced at the guards, who were surveying the room with bland expressions, then I forced another bite into my mouth. When I looked up again, Linette had that crazed look in her eyes, staring straight ahead. Her strategizing look.

“Are there cameras in the room where you teach?” she asked.

“I don’t know,” I whispered.

“How can you not know?” she asked, annoyed. “Look today.”

“Okay, but there’s no way I can take anything. I’m never alone.”

“The guards cannot be staring at you the entire time.” Linette nodded to the bag at my side. “Slip it in there.”

“Remy,” Tater said to his bowl. “If you can get your hands on anything electronic, we can try to use it at night to send or receive signals, and you can return it in the morning.”

My stomach was roiling at the idea. There’s a reason I didn’t join the military. Stealth and danger were not my things. But I was the only one with access to the palace.

“I’ll look,” I promised.

“Have you been alone with him yet?” Linette asked.

My innards seized at this, churning my breakfast. I felt both of their eyes on me as I stared at the pasty contents in my bowl and minutely shook my head.

“Make it happen,” she demanded.

From the corner of my eye it looked like Tater was holding his spoon so hard he might bend it in his fist. I reached out with my leg as far as I could under the table until my foot touched his. The contact, even through our shoes, sent blood whooshing to every nerve in my body. I watched as his hand relaxed on the spoon, and he pressed his foot to mine. Our eyes never met.

We were quiet as we finished.

“Did Remy tell you her fantastically stupid idea to try and teach the girls in our room after hours?”

Tater’s eyes flew up to me, scorching me, and I looked at the guard again. When I found one of them staring straight at me, my demeanor changed to demure and I gave the guard a soft smile before looking back down. From the corner of my eye I saw Tater’s hands clench into fists again, and he brought them under the table to his lap.

“Rem…” Tater’s voice was filled with warning.

“It’s fine,” I whispered, grabbing my tray and standing. “Don’t worry.”

I wished Linette hadn’t told him that. As if he didn’t have enough crap on his mind. I sent her a glare, which she returned, and I caught one last look of Tater’s stiff form, hands in his lap, knee bouncing and jaw locked. I wished so badly I could hug him and try to calm him. When the door is closed, I turn my attention back to her. “So, that was the husband, huh?”

“Ex.”

Stepping forward, I invade her personal space. Her eyes are alive with fire, but not in the way they were moment ago with the douche. No, her eyes dance with a heady mixture of excitement and lust as she glares back at me. “Watching you tear him apart and eat him alive was so fucking hot,” I confess, touching the side of her cheek with the side of my finger.

“Are you joining me in said shower?”

“Shame. I’m sure you’d really know how to turn up the heat in the shower, firecracker.” Again, I touch her face. I can’t seem to stop touching her. She should probably run in the other direction, fast. Hell, I should run the other way as quickly as possible. The last thing I need is a woman clouding up my brain, distracting my focus from helping my mom.

But I’m just a man.

A man with urges and needs, and those are directed at this little spitfire of a woman who makes me want to turn all caveman on her and throw her over my shoulder. I bet I could extract another of those sexy little gasps if I were to swat her ass.

Plus, throw in the fact that she’s technically married. That point alone is enough to make me want to look away. But I can’t. I’m drawn to her, like a moth to a flame. This desire I felt, even after only a brief meeting several weeks ago, clearly isn’t going away anytime soon. Not when she stands there with fire dancing in her eyes and a sadistically little smile on her lips. Oh, this woman is trouble, and I’m going to get burned.

“Well, whether that’s true or not, I guess you’ll never know,” she quips, my brain picturing exactly what she’s look like naked in the shower. Of course, having my eyes glued to her ass when she turns to walk away helps those images. A lot.

“Maybe,” I reply with a smile.

“No maybe,” she fires back, turning her attention back to me. Or at least I think she turns it back to me. I can’t tell. My eyes are still focused on the same spot her ass was just occupying. When I glance up at her eyes, I swear I’m scolded from the heat.

“Stop looking at my ass,” she chastises.

“It’s a nice ass,” I defend, refusing to look away from those hypnotizing green orbs.

“You’re impossible.”

“You like me.”

“No, no, I don’t. You’re…annoying and impossible and just like rattling my chain.”

Stepping closer yet until I can smell the scent of her lotion and see her throat bob as she swallows hard (a result of my nearness), I say, “You. Like. Me. You just don’t know what to do about it.”

Rolling her eyes, she fires back, “Don’t be so sure of yourself. You’re not that likeable.”

Lexi reaches back and finishes unlocking the door. Before she steps inside, she pauses, making my heart skip a beat and my boner stand up and say hello. “Thank you for helping me get rid of him,” she says softly, without turning and looking my way.

“Anytime he gives you trouble, come get me.”

Before she can slip inside and disappear on me, I reach forward and touch her arms. My gut tightens as my fingers dance along smooth, soft skin. I’ve never had a reaction like this to a woman. Never. So why her? Why this little hellion in heels? She’s already given me sleepless nights and wet dreams and I don’t even know her. I should stay as far away from her as possible, but if I know one thing about myself, it’s that I love a challenge.

I thought about the difference between now and then. I was a man now. I’d taken my shit life and turned it into something to be proud of. I had more money than I knew what to do with. I had a career that most people would die for. Nash accused me of being closed off. Nash didn’t know shit. He was in. They all were. I disliked people in general, but the guys…they were different. I missed the laughter. I missed the bitching. I missed my life. Most of all, I missed the music. I guess I had my answer.

For better or worse, it was time to go back.
