Hunting For A Killer…Who Doesn’t Play By The Rules.

Detective Erin Donovan expects life to quiet down after the arrest and conviction of a serial rapist who terrified her university town last summer. Then two young women are brutally slain and the murders bear all the hallmarks of the campus rapist. Did Erin arrest an innocent man? Now her job is at stake and tensions are high and just when it looks like things can’t get worse, her department gets the help it needs to solve the double homicide–in the form of a man Erin has never been able to forget.

FBI Agent Darsh Singh has no interest in reliving the past. Three years ago, his feelings for Erin Donovan had him breaking all his rules about getting involved. Now his only interest in the former NYPD detective is figuring out if she screwed up a rape investigation and helped send an innocent man to prison. But being forced to work together rekindles their old attraction, and as Darsh and Erin fall for each other, the campus predator fixates on Erin. The race is on to identify the ruthless killer before he makes Erin his final victim.

Read the first chapter of COLD HEARTED now:

He spotted her across the street, blonde hair shining like polished gold in the sunlight, her lithe body tormenting every Y-chromosome in a hundred yard radius. He pulled out his cell and took a snapshot to immortalize the moment. He’d thought she said she was returning later in the week. Obviously he’d been mistaken. He dialed her number and watched her pull out her phone. He waited for the matching smile to form on her lips, for her eyes to light up. Instead, she checked caller ID, grimaced, and let the call go to voicemail.

Horror rushed through him as she re-pocketed the phone and turned back to her companion. What the fuck? He killed the connection and collapsed to a nearby bench, hidden from sight by a mass of tangled bushes.

He’d thought she loved him. That she wanted to be with him…

God! He’d given her everything she needed, laid it out like a feast on a platter with a fucking apple stuffed in its mouth. She played you, dumbass.

Fury flayed his skin. Rage so hot and pure that the blood coursing his body burned his bones. She thought she could dismiss him? Like he was nothing? Like he hadn’t risked everything for her? His hand strangled his phone as he imagined it squeezing her alabaster neck.

A noise brought him back to himself, and he drew in a long breath.

A laugh.

A giggle.

His head jerked up. Students milled around. They were relaxed and happy after winter break. The monster had been caught. They were safe. Life could go back to normal.

Sheep.

How could they think they were safe when the person they were having coffee with might be a predator dreaming about ripping into their soft, white underbelly? Why were they so willing to swallow bullshit as long as it was confidently labeled “truth”?

The system was broken. Bad guys walked free every single day. Good guys rotted. Innocents died.

Idiots.

A cute freshman smiled shyly at him from the bench opposite. He stretched his mouth into an answering curve that revealed nothing of the shock and disappointment that still rippled through him. Women liked him. So why the fuck did she think it was okay to ignore him?

A plan formed in his brain—a plan that buzzed along his nerves with the blistering speed of electricity.

Should he do it?

It might mess up things, and he didn’t want to go to prison, but it would certainly get her attention. His brain raced over the possibilities. He knew how to do this. He knew how not to get caught. And it might keep things interesting. Life had been pretty fucking boring lately and, as he’d found out last year, there was nothing quite as satisfying as revenge.

The student hiked her bag on her shoulder and got up to leave. He eyed the flirty plaid skirt she wore over opaque black tights and tall black boots, then jogged to catch up with her. Made a joke. Made her blush.

It was almost too easy.

He laughed and realized he was enjoying himself again. The excitement resurrected something inside him that was both heady and familiar. Something that scared him enough to keep it tightly leashed and under control. Something he’d denied himself for ten long months.

He reined in the thrill that fizzed through his bloodstream. He needed to be careful. The memory of the disgraced former quarterback reminded him he couldn’t afford to get cocky. No way in hell did he intend to share the asshole’s shame and degradation. But he knew the system. Knew the flaws. She was going to regret not taking that goddamned phone call for the rest of her life.

* * *

Cassie Bressinger smoothed out the single sheet of paper and read Drew’s small, cramped handwriting for the seventh time that day.

Cass,

I was trying to figure out something interesting to tell you, but after only a month I’m already running out of material. I mean, there are only so many adjectives I can invent to describe the three shades of gray that make up the decor here—snot, Minnesota, and dead rabbit are my newest favorites. I probably wouldn’t win any prizes in English class, but as I got kicked out I guess it doesn’t matter.

Three shades of gray—hmm, there might be a book in there somewhere…

Fifty Shades this place is not. Not to say there isn’t plenty of banging going on from the grunts and groans I hear at night. Someone somewhere is enjoying the fuck out of somebody else.

I think it’s consensual…

An ironic concern for a convicted rapist but, hey, who wants to be predictable?

Honestly, Babe, I’m at the stage where protecting my own ass has become my #1 priority. Luckily, I’m a big motherfucker and spent years on the gridiron, staring down people desperate to drill me into the ground. I could do with my offensive line in here though…

Crap.

I didn’t mean to talk about this shit and I’m running out of writing paper so I don’t want to start over. Plus, my fingers are getting cramps from holding a pen. Yeah, me, former star athlete whose hands were supposed to be his golden meal ticket. Getting cramps from writing a freaking letter! More irony J

Enough about me. How are you? What’s happening with your courses this semester? You said you were going to try and get into law school. Please don’t do that because of me!!! The last thing I want is for you to be stuck in a stuffy courtroom listening to god-awful testimony and watching people’s lives disintegrate. Run away and join the circus. Take a year off and travel the world.

Seriously.

And make sure you write and tell me all about your adventures, okay? I’m living vicariously. And if you want to have sex with other girls—that’s okay. Feel free to write and tell me all about that, too. Kidding! Well…kind of kidding and now kind of horny, which is a pain in the ass. Obviously the DA was right to classify me as a dangerous sex fiend.

Fucker.

Okay, gotta go. Time for me to go line up for sloppy mashed potatoes and sausages that look like severed fingers… Ugh, okay, just grossed myself out.

Don’t worry about me—I got this.

Love you. Miss you.

Drew. X

Someone knocked on the door and Cassie jumped. Tanya Whitehouse sauntered in before Cassie had a chance to hide the letter.

“That from Drew?” Tanya was wearing skinny jeans, her favorite strappy black top, and sparkly earrings. Her lips glowed in glittering magenta. Going out. Doing normal things like a normal person.

Cassie popped a shoulder and nodded.

“He okay?” asked Tanya.

“He’s incarcerated with rapists and murderers for crimes he didn’t commit,” she bit out. “What do you think?”

Tanya placed her perfectly manicured hand along Cassie’s forearm. “You know what I meant.”

Always patient. Always reasonable.

Cassie swallowed the anger. She wasn’t patient, and she wasn’t reasonable. But Tanya was only trying to help. All her friends had been nothing but supportive throughout this entire nightmare.

“He says he’s okay.” Cassie swallowed the knotted lump of grief that had taken up residence in her throat and tried to find her rationality. “I think he just says that to make me feel better.”

“You going to visit him?” Tanya asked gently.

Cassie nodded. “I’m driving over with his dad at the end of the month. Drew doesn’t want me to come, but I—”

“Maybe he’s right.”

Cassie sat up on the messy bed. She knew where this was going. “Please don’t tell me I’m wasting my life. Drew is my life.”

Tanya grabbed Cassie’s hand and squeezed hard enough to hurt. “I just don’t want you to be sad for the next thirty years.”

Her vision blurred, but they both pretended Cassie wasn’t crying. Even she was sick of the incessant tears. “I won’t be.” She was lying. “Anyway, he can still appeal.”

There was an awkward silence when Tanya didn’t say anything. Cassie’s gaze shifted to the image on the front of a magazine. Easier to look at some movie star complaining about her messed up childhood than dealing with the sort of truth that dug holes in your soul.

“Hey,” Tanya said brightly, “there’s a party over at Riddell Hall. Wanna come with?”

Cassie shook her head.

“Come on. It’ll be fun,” her friend urged.

Going to a party would remind her of all the times she and Drew had hung out. She didn’t want to acknowledge the aching void of his absence—especially not in public.

“I have an assignment due tomorrow. I really need to finish it.” She crawled over to her bedside table in search of a tissue.

Tanya lightly flicked the magazine, mockingly. “Well, you better get on with it then.”

Cassie slumped back to the bed, ashamed of how piteous she’d become. “I can’t face seeing people,” she admitted. “Not yet. Maybe coming back to school was a mistake.”

“You did great. Take it slowly. You’ll get there, and we’ll all be waiting for you on the other side of this.”

Cassie nodded. The problem was there was no ‘other side.’ Drew’s loss was like a rip in her chest that got bigger every day. “The world thinks he’s a monster.”

Tanya wrapped her arms around Cassie in a quick hug. “We love him. We know he’s a good guy and would never touch those lying bitches.”

“I don’t know how this could have happened.”

“You can’t lock yourself away forever, Cass.”

But she wanted to.

She didn’t know why she’d come back this term, but hanging around her parents’ house with nothing to do was worse. Christmas had sucked balls. Now she needed to figure out a way to move on without giving up on the man she loved.

She gripped her friend. “I love you, Tan. I’m sorry I’m such a bitch.”

“I love you, too, baby.”

She forced herself to pull away and wiped her eyes. “I really do have an assignment to finish.”

“Then get to it, slacker.” Tanya gave her arm a noogie.

Cassie forced a smile. She’d blown off cheerleading practice earlier today, and if she did it again, the coach would throw her off the squad. She didn’t care, except it would screw with her scholarship, and her parents weren’t wealthy. She couldn’t afford to get thrown out of the program, and she needed a good GPA to have a hope of getting into law school. But every time the football players ran onto the field in their black and gold jerseys, it was like someone was pouring acid in her eyes. Knowing everyone’s life went on while Drew sat locked up in a cell. Her throat constricted. Some days it felt like the pain would consume her whole.

She stood and pushed her friend toward the door. “Go. Have fun. Kiss some hot guys for me.”

“If I can find someone worthy enough, I intend to do a lot more than kiss him. So don’t worry if I don’t come home tonight. I’ll text you.” Tanya grinned. “Mandy’s studying in her room. Alicia is still at the library but said she’d be back just after ten as per usual. She might come to the party later, so if you change your mind…”

“Maybe,” Cassie lied. “You be careful out there. Guard your drink,” she warned. Because if those women had been raped, there was still a dangerous criminal on the loose, and no one knew it.

“I will, honey. Jillian’s going to be here any minute to give me a ride.”

“Go. Have fun.”

Tanya turned and smiled at her sadly, touching her arm. Cassie felt the punch of it near her heart. “You’ll get through this, Cass. You don’t have to forget Drew, but you need to keep living your life. He’d want you to do that.”

Cassie’s lip wobbled as she remembered what he’d said in his letter. She crossed her arms over her chest as she watched her friend jog down the stairs, grab her coat, and race out the front door. She had to believe a miracle was going to happen and that Drew would be freed, but it seemed futile. The judicial process was so slow it took months to even schedule a court hearing. In the meantime Drew was forced to live amongst killers and thieves. Getting raped in the showers wasn’t something anyone should have to worry about. Who could live like that?

That bitch Donovan had a lot to answer for. The blonde detective probably thought this was over.

It wasn’t. It would never be over.

Anger grounded her. Without it she’d be so damn lost.

Across the hall, Mandy turned her music on full blast. Cassie slipped on her noise-canceling headphones and stared at her computer and thought about the paper she needed to finish. Instead she pulled out a pen and notepad and started to write back to the man she loved, stopping only once to wipe away the tears that insisted on falling.

I’m halfway to my car when Murphy’s voice stops me. “Hope! Wait up.”

“What’s up?” I ask when he reaches me.

“Nothing. Wanted to walk you to your car.”

My silence tells him I’m not buying it.

He opens my car door for me, and I toss my purse on the passenger seat but don’t get in. “What’s on your mind, Murphy?”

“Thanks for doing that for her today. Teller better have thanked you.”

“He did. Is that really why you raced down here?”

His grin falters. “It’s just…her mom’s never been around and her grandmother hated doing that kind of stuff for Heidi. Teller and I used to try…but it’s not the same.”

Damn. I’m going to cry if he keeps this up.

“I was happy to do it. We had fun.”

“Funny thing is, I know you mean that, Hope.” He chuckles when I frown. “I know you ain’t doin’ it to impress Rock. You got our prez so whipped he can barely see straight.”

“Hardly.”

“And you got no reason to wanna be in Teller’s good graces. Hell, you probably wanna smack the shit out of him.”

“Well…”

“I’m glad she has you now.”

AP new - synopsis.jpg

I’m the best operator in the entire agency. The plum assignments—always mine. So when an American heiress goes missing, I’m the guy they call to get her back. Rescuing Collette Stanford is my mission. What I do to her after that is purely up to me, as long as she makes it back to the States in one piece. I’ll kill the bad guys, get the girl, and get a little taste of what the heiress has to offer. None of this is negotiable. I’m Cash Remington, and I never miss.

AP new - excerpt.jpg

“Collette.” I strip my shirt off and toss it onto the vanity as she walks in hesitantly, her head bowed and her eyes down. “Take the jacket off and get in the bath.”

Her shyness only taunts the beast inside me. I want her naked, showing me all her secrets and yielding to my every desire. My eyes are desperate to see all of her again, my hands over-eager to touch her soft skin. I turn the knob and stop the pour of steaming hot water.

“But you’re in here.” Her voice is so soft, like a rose petal, and color rises in her cheeks.

I strip my boxers off and walk to her. She looks up now, to avoid seeing my erection. I smile at her bashfulness as I slide my hands down the lapel of my jacket she’s still wearing. I undo the buttons as she stares at me, her eyes fearful, but also full of a heat that I want to stoke until she’s a raging fire. The jacket slides to the floor with a little push.

And now it’s just Collette and me. Nothing else between us. I tip her chin up and taste her lips for the first time. She’s tentative, unsure. I run my hand up her smooth back and tangle my fingers in her hair. Giving a slight tug, I pull her head back and slant my mouth over hers. That gets her hands on me, where I want them.

I run my tongue along the seam of her lips, daring her to open them for me. Her hands travel to my chest, my abs, and then to my back. Her breasts press into me, the tips hard and tantalizing. I need them in my mouth, but I want her surrender first. All of it. I want her to give me her virginity like a gift, something to treasure and keep, and I also need her submission. With the way she melts under my touch, I know I’ll have everything I want, and soon.

I love women. I’m not ashamed to admit that making a beautiful woman come is my main goal in life—one that I accomplish night after night. Women are as drawn to me as I am to them. I don’t get turned down. It’s not a brag, just a fact. At least it was a fact. Until I met Quinn—the one woman who didn’t fall for my easy charm. Now, I have to have her. She may not want to get close, may not want to admit that I turn her on and can give her a night that she’ll never forget, but she was mine the first moment I saw her. Eventually, I’ll have her beneath me, my hands in her hair, and my name on her lips. It’s what I do. I’m the Panty Whisperer.

AP new - excerpt.jpg

TOMMY IS SHAKING his head too much for comfort as I walk up to him at the bar top.

“What?” I ask.

“Nothing, man. Didn’t say a damn thing, bro.”

“Megan tell Quinn?”

He stares at me like I’m an idiot. “Herbert, I just wanna shake the ever-loving shit out of you sometimes. Quinn knew the second she walked by you and you poked your little head, yes I mean both of them, up like a turtle coming out of his shell. Megan tell Quinn? Fucking Michelangelo over here. You didn’t learn shit from Splinter, did you? Fucking honorary Foot Clan member.”

“It wasn’t like that.”

His eyes are about to pop out of his head. “Just save it, bitch. You’re making my life oh so complicated. You’re lucky you’re a hot piece of man meat.”

“But—”

“Don’t!” He bugs his eyes at me again.

“I—”

“I said don’t.” He talks so damn fast I can’t get out a word and his puffed out cheeks are trying not to laugh. His eyes open wider.

“Look—”

“You are terrible at this game, Sir. I said don’t!” He’s on the verge of an aneurysm.

“Fine. You are such a persistent prick. You know that? What the fuck is new?”

He looks away. So smart to have such an obvious tell. He’s withholding information.

“What is it?”

“Nothing.” He won’t look at me, and now I have to know.

His voice gets all high pitched. He’s nervous. “You see the new Force Awakens trailer? If Abrams doesn’t bury that goddamned Binks clown I will murder him, Herbert. I will fuck his Facebook page with the fury of 1,000 angry porn dicks, by god!”

“Tell me what you’re going to tell me.” I inch closer to him.

He shakes his head. “Didn’t work. Did it? Changing the subject. You can’t be persuaded to the dark side?”

“Tell me. I know you want to. Join me, Thomas.”

He looks away.

“Thomas, look at me.” I’m the one bugging my eyes now.

He turns back to me and cackles. “Your Jedi mind tricks won’t work on me, Sir. I am enslaved by the pussy of one Megan, much like Leia tied to the likes of a forty-ton gila monster. I am a Jedi, like my father before me.”

I crouch down in his face. “So be it, Jedi. And now young Skywalker, you will die.”

“Fine, man goddamn!”

I grin huge.

He glares back at me. “Quinn’s leaving town. She’s going to speak at some bullshit conference for their company. And it could be permanent if she does well.” He gasps like he’s been holding his breath for hours.

My heart drops into my stomach. Pain rips through my bones at his words, but I compose myself. “Good for her. I’m sure it’ll be good for her career.” I look around and want to rip the walls off this building and burn it to the ground.

“I’m sorry, man.”

“For what?”

He looks up at the bartender and orders two scotches, then tosses me a look like I’m clueless and want to copy his calculus homework. “I’m sorry.”

I give in and stare down at the ground. “It’s okay, buddy. It’s not like it’s a hundred percent sure thing she’s leaving forever, right?”

“Yeah, well. I don’t know. I wish you two would stop being idiots. Everyone can see it but the two of you.” He stares out the window.

I want to change the subject, but my thoughts are flying back and forth like a Blue Angels air show. “It’s too late, man. Yeah, I love her. But I fucked it up. Can we all please move on?”

His face tightens and his jaw clenches, grinding his teeth together.

Guilt pummels my abs with a right cross.

“You didn’t fuck it up, man. You could still have her. You’re just too much of a pussy to do anything about it.” He slams his fist on the counter, rattling all the glasses down the bar, then turns and walks toward the door.

“Dude, what the fuck? What do you care anyway? Sorry I’m not making things convenient for you and Megan.” I squeeze my glass of scotch so hard I’m worried it might break.

He pauses for a second, then turns back around and walks over to me. His hands are clenched into fists. I don’t know that either one of us has ever been in a fight, so I don’t know what the fuck to do.

TBRreview

Initially I wasn’t a huge fan of this book because I don’t like cheating and that was in the first story.  But I stuck it out and glad I did.  Once you get through Joel’s manwhore ways and constant one night stands, it’s a great story.

Olivia is planning on paying Joel back for his manwhore ways of her friend.  But then Olivia starts to see the charm of Joel aka Herbert.

This is a first for Joel, a woman tells him no.  And that intrigues him.

The dialogue and hilarity have this story end on a great note.  You will be laughing along and pulled right into the book!

4 stars!

Blog Tour ~ Breaking Down Sydney ~ by ~ Brittney Coon

SHADES OF SYDNEY(A Sydney West Novel #1)

Sydney West enjoys sampling summer boys, but this year, one refuses to be a one-night stand…

Twenty-one-year-old Sydney doesn’t believe in relationships. Her parents’ toxic divorce has taught her love is nothing but a sinister fairytale. So every summer she parties, hooks up, abandons her lover before dawn, and repeats.

That is until she meets gorgeous local surfer Jason King at the beach…

When Jason fails to flirt—or even give her a second glance—she decides something must be wrong with him, and it’s safer to stay away. But when Sydney and Jason’s best friends hook up and become Malibu’s hottest couple, they are forced to spend more time together than either of them cares for.

Armed with a sharp tongue, Sydney works to keep Jason at bay…

In a moment of weakness, Sydney lets her guard down and confides in Jason, realizing he’s more than just a hot guy—he’s also a friend. And when Sydney’s need for a summer boy results in her falling into bed with Jason, despite her better judgment, she runs away from him by morning.

The problem is, he won’t accept being another one-night stand, and will do anything to prove…

Love really does exist.

BREAKING DOWN SYDNEY (A Sydney West Novel #2)

Sydney West’s new relationship might have survived Malibu, but her transformation from party girl to girlfriend isn’t complete…

Sydney is back in Arizona, and with the fall semester at her doorstep, doubts about her so-called summer love start to plague her. A good girl can only stay good for so long. Jason King changed her and made her wonder if love was real. But now, far from his charm, and with the party scene on campus in full swing, the magic is fading…

Jason isn’t willing to let distance drive a wedge between them…

A surprise reunion and a romantic cabin getaway is enough to reignite their summertime spark, but Sydney isn’t convinced this whole monogamous, meeting-your-parents thing Jason wants is possible. No boy has ever met her mother. Then, when a sudden family tragedy strikes, it sends her spiraling into her old habits of booze and boys.

Sydney can only hide from her past for so long…

In the fog of drowning her sorrows, Sydney realizes her former party lifestyle won’t make her happy. Her one-night stands ended with Jason. As much as she wants to believe in that far-fetched fairytale ending, she’s afraid if Jason finds out about all her summer boys, he will abandon her just like her father did.

Jason refuses to settle for the superficial shell Sydney keeps between them, though, and is determined to…

Break Down Sydney once and for all.

SHADES OF SYDNEY (Book 1):

BREAKING DOWN SYDNEY (Book 2):

Excerpt 1:

We went for a hike in the woods. Amelia and Hunter were pros, putting a few yards between them and Jason and me. I didn’t mind. Amelia was like a drill sergeant. There was no need for that when you were trying to enjoy nature’s beauty.

“Come here,” Jason whispered into the shell of my ear. Before I could answer, he was pulling me off the trail.

“You know the trail is here for a reason. If we get lost, it’s on you.”

His teeth tugged on my earlobe. He said, “Will you stop? We’re not going far.”

The wind blew lightly through the trees and birds were singing. Internal flames ate away at my body. I gave into Jason and let him take me to the unknown.

He stopped in front of a fat pine tree. I gave him a curious look as he circled its trunk and brushed his hand along its bark.

“Should I leave the two of you alone?” I joked.

Jason smirked at me before pulling out a pocket knife. I felt my face go from being curious to alarmed.

“Wh—?”

“Watch.” Jason dug the blade into the bark, carving into the tree.

I stood at his side as he chipped away. After a few minutes, I could make out a heart shape. He then put our initials into the center of the heart.

“There,” he said, standing back to admire his handiwork. “Now we’ll forever live here.”

Something inside me pulled me toward the tree. It was like I had to run my fingers down the new carving to make sure it was real.

The tree would forever bear our initials, through the test of time. I stared at the “JK + SW” within the heart.

“I can honestly say no boy has ever done this for me.”

Jason smiled, putting away his knife. “No? Good to know I’m ahead of the game.”

Excerpt 2:
Jason set a warm cup of coffee in front of me. I blinked a few times before cradling the cup against my chest. I sipped it, letting the hot liquid scorch my throat.
“Don’t drink it too fast. You’ll burn off all your taste buds,” Jason warned.
With the cup back on the table, I glared at him. What does he see in me? Why would anyone want to help someone like me? I’m no good, just need to be thrown away.
“Why are you here?” I asked more to myself than to Jason.
“Excuse me?” He raised an eyebrow.
“Why are you so nice to me all the time? I don’t deserve it. I—” Tears fell down my cheeks. Would I never stop crying after all this?
I am broken.
Jason cupped my chin with his hand, forcing me to look at him. “I love you, Sydney. I love the good in you. I love your flaws. I love every piece of you. The sooner you realize what love means the sooner you can stop feeling broken.”
How does he know I feel broken?
Excerpt 3:
The moon was high and full. It shined into the open window and cast Jason in a heavenly light. His collarbones were perfection to kiss. Jason caught my chin with his fingertips and forced me to lift my head. His lips molded to mine, taking me in. I couldn’t help but giggle. I still couldn’t believe Jason was in my bed.
“So, how long do I get the pleasure of having you?” I purred.
Jason sat up against the pillows, moving his arm from around my shoulders to move his body a few inches higher. I felt lighter without his touch. To get comfortable again, I folded my arms across his chest and rested my chin on them.
“I’m here for a while…”
I tipped my head to the side. “What’s a while? I thought you came for a visit because the holidays seemed so far away.”
He rubbed his jaw, locking eyes with me. “It hurt too much to be without you so…I transferred.”
“Transferred?”
He couldn’t be serious. My heart did a flip, trying to get out of my ribcage.
“Mmm-hmm, I attend this university now, so you can’t get rid of me anytime soon.” He gave me the biggest grin I’d ever seen.
I backed away from him, sitting on the foot of the bed. “Are you telling me the truth?” It was too berserk to be real. Why would he move to Arizona for me? He loved me that much?
“When you left that day in California, I felt lost. After a while, I realized a piece of me was missing. I think you were right about the distance. It would’ve hurt us. Talking with you via texting and such was fun, but it only reminded me that I couldn’t touch you whenever I wanted. So I requested a transfer and didn’t want to tell you in case something didn’t work out. Plus I wanted to surprise you,” he said, reaching across the bed to toy with a strand of my long hair.

I’m so glad that Sydney got a second book!  She came so far in her journey in book 1 that I had to see how it played out once she got back to Arizona.  And how her relationship with Jason will survive.

Just like in book 1, Jason won’t let Sydney push him and their relationship away and go back to her party girl ways. They might be in two different states but he won’t let that stop him.

This book was a great sequel/continuance of Shades of Sydney and very much needed.

The Wikomsette Excerpt © Emerald Lavere 2013

On Sunday—it must have been Sunday, because it was Wednesday when I’d arrived, and unless I was on a different planet…well, they sure looked like human men, acted like human men, felt like human men—anyway, it was Sunday to me, and all the men were resting. Some milled around the clearing talking and laughing, while others stayed in their quarters or swam in the nearby river.

Rayne was assigned to take me farther down the river where I could bathe privately.

Before I waded in, I asked, “What does it mean? Bisho un vu?”

Rayne sat cross-legged on the shore, absorbed in the black device he always carried. It was flat and about the size of a greeting card, and seemed to be a computer or tablet. He paused in his activity and answered in a solemn tone, eyes still on the device, “It means, ‘I offer myself to you.’”

“Oh.” That was surprising. “That’s rather romantic, considering I’m nothing more than a common prostitute here.”

“You are La Wikomsette!” Rayne snapped, frustration flashing in his icy eyes. “You are like a queen. They’ll do anything for you.” Then he finished bitterly, “There is no higher honor.”

“Why do you hate me?” I blurted. In my life back home, I didn’t open up to anyone, but here, so far from normal society, mincing words seemed an unnecessary formality.

“Don’t be stupid,” he replied with contempt. Concentrating on his device, he added, “Even if I did hate you, why would it matter? You have seven men here who would give their lives for you. If that’s not good enough, then you are a spoiled child and don’t deserve the love of even one of them.”

I seriously doubted love had much to do with anything. Mad horniness, maybe. I took off my clothes, and when Rayne didn’t show the slightest interest, I was stung by the insult. Maybe I was a spoiled child. But a wicked desire to harass him came over me.

Once in the water, I called, “I’ve figured it all out, you know.” That seemed to catch his attention, but he still didn’t look over or say anything. “You all are aliens, and I’m no longer on Earth.”

He burst out laughing. I smiled, pleased that I’d cracked his hard exterior. Also, it seemed I could cross that theory off my list. It was a lame one, anyway. The forest, or jungle, more like, was teeming with familiar wildlife.

“This doesn’t look like Earth?” he said, amused, gazing at the lush foliage around us. “Pity, we tried so hard to replicate your home planet to fool you.” He laughed at his own joke, then sighed. He shook his head and returned his attention to the device.

“Why did the men say that? About offering themselves?” I asked, splashing around in the pleasant water. “Not all of them did, though.” I wished Niku had said it. I would have liked him to, and Brannon was so affectionate, why hadn’t he?

After a moment, Rayne said, “In our…culture, a man says that only the first time he gives himself to someone.”

“But, it was the first time that each one…” I stopped midsentence, gasping as realization dawned. “Do you mean to tell me those men have never, ever been with a woman before? Ever?”

Rayne nodded.

After diving underwater to look for the soap I’d dropped, I came up and threw out my next theory. “Are you all from a monastery? Or some…weird cult or something?”

“Regina.” Even though he wasn’t looking in my direction, I could tell he was rolling his eyes. “Finish your bath. I don’t want to babysit you all day, and we have the Rest Day meal in a little while.” Despite the reprimand, his tone was lighter than before. Was this progress? Maybe he would learn to like me, after all.

“Your English is already flawless, and the others have learned so much. How is that even possible after so few days?” I asked while scrubbing my hair.

Rayne set the computer object down, stretched out his legs, and leaned back on his hands. “I’m not sure how to explain it well. But we have technology”—he waved a hand carelessly—“far more advanced than what you are used to—”

“How do you know what I’m used to?” Rayne had the annoying habit of talking down to me, and I was quickly growing tired of it.

“Are you done yet? Let’s head back,” he replied coolly.

“Almost. Sorry. Please tell me. Please?” I should really learn to keep my big mouth shut. He was annoyed again and waited a minute or two before answering.

“Well, the equipment is like a computer, a very, very small one. It houses thousands of languages. Ax identified yours the first day you came.” A dark look crossed his brow, and he went silent for several moments. Taking a deep breath, he went on. “I guess the most basic way to say it is we download the information into our brains, bits at a time. I already knew much of this language, so really I just had to fine-tune it.”

This was followed by several minutes of quiet while I climbed out of the water, wrapped up in a towel, and then just sat as I pondered the implications in his explanation. Rayne eventually glanced my way. “You’re androids?” I asked in a whisper.

“Oh good gosh, you are ridiculous! Get your clothes on. I’m starting back now, and you can keep up or get lost out here.” He stood and started walking while I pulled on my clothes as quickly as possible. I still almost lost him in the brush as I tripped over myself and tried to catch up.

She smiles, and it makes her less intimidating. She has very nice teeth. “My dear, calm yourself.” She sweeps across the room and sits in a dramatic pose on one of the couches. “I’m told your name is Ashling?”

“Yes, my lady.” I take a seat across from her. I feel self-conscious and horribly underdressed in my sweat suit.

“I feel already that you are different than the other girls I’ve mentored. I’m not exactly sure what it is…” She blinks rapidly at my outfit as if noticing it for the first time. “But you are quite lovely. The men will certainly be doing everything they can think of to win your favor and a place in your tribe.”

I blush. “Thank you. I hope I can…be what is required.”

“Darling, you will meet all expectations if you can do but two things: open your legs to let your husbands in and open them again to let children out. Anything beyond that is extra.”

Now I’m blushing so hard that Ambria laughs. “Oh my, you are sweet! I didn’t come here just to tell you that! I’m an experienced Wikomsette, darling, and I’ll give you much more advice in the ways of the life. If what I’ve said already has you turning so pink, you may need a brandy or two before hearing some of the rest. I’m afraid you’ll faint away!” She laughs again, and I smile back at her.

I also have the urge to lock myself away in my new, ugly bedroom, but there’s no getting out of this. Instead, I resign myself to remaining planted in the Penthouse living room and settle in for the afternoon with Ambria. Her lessons aren’t too bad at the start.

“I’ve been told you’ve led an especially sheltered life,” she says.

I nod.

“That you didn’t grow up in a traditional household and will need to have even the most basic things explained.” She raises an eyebrow and pauses as if hoping I’ll spill some beans. I respond only with my best wide-eyed innocent stare. She concedes and continues, “So bear with me if some of what I say seems remedial.”

Ambria goes on to explain that the Penthouse is referred to as the “Domain” in Wikomsette households, and gives a lot of advice about keeping peace in the home. Things like being clear with my expectations of the husbands and not depriving them.

“Unless they’ve upset you, of course, dear. Then feel free to teach the offending man a lesson! Oh, and also, I would be careful if you have any particular tastes, if you understand me. I once asked for two of my husbands to share my bed at the same time for a bit of extra excitement.” She shakes her head. “The request was not well received by those two! But I got myself a couple of new husbands after that who weren’t so particular about whom they bedded, and oh my!” Ambria winks.

I find myself giggling even though the very idea sort of horrifies me. “Oh, no. I don’t think anything like that will be an issue.” My face is hot again.

“Well, you never know, dear. Once you get a taste for the cock…oh that reminds me, we should discuss tasting the cocks…” For the next hour or so, I sit, listen, choke on the water I’m drinking several times, and think my face will burst into flames of embarrassment many more times. At one point, Ambria is so caught up in her explanations of sex positions, she actually bunches up her gown and gets on all fours on the floor to explain the best way to prop yourself up while “taking it from behind” and adding self-stimulus with either your fingers or a pleasure device. “Those are a bit taboo, of course, as a woman shouldn’t be relieving herself when she has so many men that can barely get enough of her as it is. But they are perfectly acceptable accessories during sex play with a husband.”

After that display, she rolls onto her back with a huff. “Oh goodness. I can’t believe I’m on the floor. I can barely maneuver as it is in this dress, but I do love it so. Give me a hand up, will you, dear?”

With a bit of effort from both of us, Ambria manages to return to her seat on the sofa and asks for a beverage. I call down the stairway. A minute later, Jules brings us a tray of lemonade and explains the intercom, which is a circular crystal on the wall.

“These are throughout the home, my lady, and for now, you’ll have to wave a hand past one to activate it. Later today, we’ll program the system to respond to your voice.” He bows and returns to the lower level.

“A fine-looking youth, that one,” Ambria says before sipping her drink.

I merely smile, and ask, “Um. Are you… Do you still…?” I have to wonder if at her age she still romps around in the bedroom.

“Oh, gracious, dear! Of course! I’m all for it. Though, you know, I have slowed down, but believe me, so have my husbands! I still take all of them to my bed. The ones that are left, anyway. But often it’s just for the sweetness of having one of my men to sleep beside when neither of us is up for more.”

“What do you mean, the ones who are left? Don’t you take husbands for life?

Ambria nods and sighs. “Three of my darlings have passed on. I only have six left now. I suppose I could take on some younger ones. Those who have no chance of getting a younger Wikomsette of their own. But our household is quiet and content. I think it will be just us from here on out.”

“What about children? Did you have any?”

Ambria laughs so hard that tears sparkle in her eyes. “Oh, precious! Did I have children! Seventeen, dear. All boys. I suppose that’s one of the reasons I so enjoy counseling young women as they enter their positions. It’s the closest I ever get to a mother-daughter relationship.”

I barely hear the last bit because my mind is still reeling. Seventeen babies! I think I might be sick. “So…so, you were pregnant seventeen times?”

“Only sixteen. My last two boys are twins,” she says fondly. “Are you all right, dear? You look a bit green.”

Emerald Lavere grew up in rural Oregon. A country girl at heart, she now lives happily in Southern California with her three children, and only one husband (unlike her main Wikomsette characters). Formerly a dancer, singer, and actor, she still teaches dance on occasion, and sings often, and loudly, in her car.

Or at least I hope it stays here. The Romantic Style convention was meant to be a weekend of raucous fun with friends, sun, and enough poolside margaritas to forget about my ex. But now, instead of meeting my fans and signing books, I’m stuck with cocky divorce lawyer Nate Wexler. He’s arrogant, infuriating, and I can’t keep my hands off of him. Judging by the state of our hotel room, last night was wild. I just wish I could remember it.

A pair of matching tattoos. A cheap wedding veil. Half an empty box of glow in the dark condoms.

What the hell just happened?

This book was hysterically funny!  When I find a book that makes me laugh and I think someone will enjoy, I buy them a copy.  As soon as I finished Get Lucky, I was one-clicking for a good friend.
Julia’s character is so crazy!  I just love her!  While I’m not into Dr Who, Star Wars/Trek and the such, I can totally see myself in Julia.  Sometimes I feel like I have an inside voice that make inappropriate dirty comments and makes me laugh. I just love how carefree and full of life Julia is.  And that’s probably what draws Nate to her.
Nate is a stuff-shirt divorce lawyer who is in Vegas for his friend’s bachelor party and wedding.  And meets free-wheeling Julia and all hell breaks loose. Julia seems to be Nate’s “devil” on his shoulder that drives him to do things her wouldn’t normally do.
This story is full of hijinks and hilarity.  Part Hangover and part Old School and all parts comedic.  It’s a great, light hearted read that ends with an HEA.

(A taste)

It’s still dark when I wake up with a jolt, the cold sweat covering my naked body. It takes me a moment, like it always does, to remember where I am and that I’m safe. The seconds tick by, and my breathing evens out. Rubbing my hands against my eyes, I remind myself that I’m not in a cage.

I give up on sleep and get up from the bed. I make my way to the bathroom, turn on the shower, and get in before the water has a chance to warm up. I’m used to cold showers after being denied the luxury of hot water for so long and then having to bathe in rivers when I escaped.

I soap up and try not to think about my past, but it always comes flooding back after a nightmare. I can’t seem to stop it, so I just have to ride it out until all the feelings pass. This dream was like so many before, most of it exactly the same, but sometimes my mind likes to add in details that weren’t there, just to fuck with me.

This time when I was dreaming, I was in the cage again. The one they kept me locked in unless they were running tests. They had a theory that if shifters were kept in small places, they would be less likely, or unable, to shift.

In this dream, I was in the cage, and I could hear Winnie crying. I know this didn’t happen because Winnie was never captured with me. She got away. I always have to remind myself of that. We were young when we were caught, but she fought and was able to get free. I was too drugged up to know what happened, and all I could remember was waking up in a cell without her.

I’d learned over the years that we were taken by a company that was doing research on shifters. They kept us as if we were animals in a lab. It was a horrible time in my life, and ever since I broke free, my only goal was finding my sister. When I found her, it was only to see that she had amnesia and was being cared for here in Gray Ridge. Winnie had gotten lucky, and Alpha Stone had taken her into the pack and kept her safe. When I found her, and when her memories came back, I felt like my journey had finally come to an end.

Only it didn’t.

I’m a bear shifter, and there aren’t as many of us as there are of other species. Even fewer bear shifter females exist. When Winnie mated with Alpha Stone, I could have left, but I didn’t want to. Bears aren’t normally pack animals, but they are close to their families. I couldn’t move away from Winnie after finally finding her, even though she was mated.

Thankfully, Alpha Stone welcomed me into the pack and gave me some land. Xavier, one of the wolf shifters, and I built my cabin out here to give me some space away from the pack and also to have a way to stay close to Winnie.

I’d been in captivity for so long that I was worried I wouldn’t be able to adjust to pack life. But Xavier had gone through some trauma before he met his mate, and he was able to give me some advice to help me cope.

When we built the house, he helped me put in extra security measures so that I could feel safe again. My nightmares used to be a lot worse, and I think he knew it. So to help, we installed bolted locks both inside and outside the entry points of the house. The locks are in place in a way that no one is going in or out of my home without my permission. The extra security helps me sleep. As long as the nightmares don’t creep in.

When I’ve finished showering, I make myself breakfast and have coffee. My life is very quiet, and I don’t have many friends—just the Gray Ridge pack people who Winnie makes me hang out with. I look over at the counter and see an invitation to a kid’s birthday party at Xavier and Gwen’s home. I know I should want to go and be around everyone, but I feel myself getting tired and wanting to hibernate.

I let out a long sigh and try to shake off the dark mood. Internally, I know that I’m safe and everything is okay. I’m just getting used to the world again. Also being around a lot of happy mated couples can start to wear on any single shifter after a while. There’s a longing that comes with wanting to find your mate, and knowing I probably never will sends another wave of sadness over me.

Closing my eyes, I see dark hair and blue eyes. I try to grab on to the image, but it’s gone like smoke through my fingers. I think of the image every time I think about finding my mate. I don’t even know where the image is from or how I remember it, but something about it is familiar.

I push away from the table and clean up the kitchen. When I finish, I look outside. The sun has come up and it’s starting to snow a bit. I love this time of year. The cool air and the clean smells of the forest calm my bear. I feel him stir inside me, and I decide he could use a walk in the woods.

Bears aren’t much for running or spending energy when they don’t have to. Our shifters are usually really big and solidly built. I lost a lot of weight when I was being held captive, but in the time since, I’ve put on a lot of weight. It feels good to have the extra layers of thick muscle and even a little extra around my mid-section. We’re pretty hairy, too, and I definitely meet that type. My long beard and chest hair help keep me warm when it’s cold out. So even though it’s snowing, I don’t need much coverage.

I’ve got on a long-sleeved, cream-colored thermal shirt and jeans. I go over to the door, pull on my boots, and then go about unlocking the door. I walk outside and turn, locking the cabin back up.

The woods are quiet, and my bear is enjoying the peace. He likes being outside, but a lot of times my fear overrides his need and we stay indoors. This is good for both of us, at least for a little while.

I walk for a few miles and come through the clearing next to the lake. I don’t usually venture to this side of the protected lands, but I just need a change today. New scenery. Something inside me is telling me this will be best for me and my bear. That we need a new direction and something different to see today.

Looking off in the distance, I see a dark figure on the ground. My bear is instantly alert, and I widen my stance, preparing for danger. I raise my nose, trying to catch a scent, but the wind is at my back. Slowly and silently, I walk around the edge of the lake, looking for danger from every direction.

My bear is pacing, trying to get out, but I want to be able to hold my skin. I’m always terrified that someone will try to take me again after getting captured the last time, so I’m being extra cautious.

I don’t know what possesses me to even want to investigate the dark figure. Normally, I would just turn and run. But something’s pulling me in that direction, and I need to see what it is.

As I step closer, I see the dark figure take shape. The scent still hasn’t come my way, but I can make out that it’s a person lying in the snow. My steps are tentative and slow, and I move closer and closer.

When I realize it’s a woman, my heart starts to beat faster and my steps quicken. What if she’s a shifter in trouble? I don’t know everyone in the pack yet, so this could be a member in distress.

Moving close, I see that her eyes are closed and she’s lying on her back with her arms outstretched. She must not have been here long because not much snow has fallen on her. It’s starting to come down heavier now, and she’s getting a small dusting on her face and body.

She’s got thick black hair and skin the color of cream. Her lips are blood red, and something inside of me is pulling me towards her. I can’t explain the force that makes me go to her, but something inside me knows that I must help her.

Something inside me needs to kiss her. Taste her… Brand her.

I kneel down beside her, and the sound wakes her. Her big eyes pop open, and the blue there strikes me right in the chest. Her eyes are the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen. I want to get lost in them and let them carry me away. There’s something about them that’s familiar and safe, but also terrifying and confusing.

A heartbeat passes between us, and for a second I’m pulled back in time to a place I thought I’d left. Fear grips me, but then the woman smiles up at me, and all of that melts away.

“Hi,” she whispers, and I light up at the word. I start to say something back, but at that moment her scent hits me, and I my throat nearly closes up.

She’s human.

Rage pulses through me, and I start to stand. I want to get away from this human as fast as I can, but suddenly I’m dizzy with need. I inhale again, and I feel my bear trying to take over. He’s clawing inside me to get out to roar, but I hold him tight, trying to catch my brain up to my body.

Mate, my bear growls over and over, and I realize that this human is my mate. A human. The one thing in this world that I not only fear but never want to be near again is my mate.

I growl long and low, but the human doesn’t look surprised. She sits up and pushes back from me, but I reach out, snatching her ankle before she can get away.

“Mine,” I say through gritted teeth. I didn’t want this, not like this. But my body has no choice.

“Let me go.” I look into her eyes to see panic there. “Don’t, please. My brothers will worry. I know what you are, please don’t do this.”

The plea for her family pulls at my heart. How many times had I begged to be let free to find my family? How many times had I begged for news of my sister? I feel sadness for her, but then it’s followed by anger. Her kind are the ones that kept me from Winnie. This human is my mate. I have every right to take her from her human people.

“You’re mine now,” I say, pulling her off the ground and throwing her over my shoulder.

“Please let me go. I swear I won’t come back. I’ll never tell anyone.”

As the snow comes down heavier and heavier, I carry her back to my cabin. Our tracks are covered and no one will be able to find us. I’m taking my mate home, and she will get used to it.

“You can’t do this. You can’t take me.” There is so much panic in her voice that I nearly stop and go back, not wanting to upset her.

“I will treat you kindly and no harm will ever come to you as long as I live.” I take a breath and keep walking. “It’s more than your kind ever gave me.”

TBRreview

We get to finally hear about Winnie’s brother, Koda meeting his mate, who isn’t what he imagined for his mate.

Snow is used to the shifter life, even if her brothers are determined to keep her locked away.  She takes a chance – while they’re gone of course, takes a walk in the woods and runs into Koda.

And the sparks (and fur) fly!  Just as the others, Koda’s bear immediately recognizes his mate and won’t let anything or any one keep her from him.

5 stars!

Alexa Riley is two sassy friends who got together and wrote some dirty books. They are both married moms of two who love football, donuts, and obsessed book heroes.

They specialize in insta-love, over-the-top, sweet, and cheesy love stories that don’t take all year to read. If you want something SAFE, short, and always with a happily ever after, then Alexa Riley is for you!

About Jasmine Walt

Jasmine WaltI’m obsessed with books, chocolate, and sharp, pointy objects. Somehow, those three things melded together in my head and transformed into a desire to write. Usually fantastical stuff, with a healthy dose of action and romance. My characters are a little (okay, a lot) on the snarky side, and they swear, but they mean well. Even the villains sometimes.

When I’m not working on my next book, you can find me working on my dao sword form, spending time with my family, or binge-watching superhero shows on Netflix. I love to hear from my readers, so if you’ve got a question or just want to say hi, feel free to contact me via my website at http://www.jasminewalt.com.
