Kitten walked around him, tracing a red welt down his back that had been caused by her whip. “Are you ready, little boy? Kitten is going to ride you like an animal.”

“Tell me,” she demanded. “Tell me to fuck your ass like an animal.”

Colton paused because the idea of just blurting those words out embarrassed him.

He couldn’t tell when she was about to do something evil until she actually did it. But he kept his mouth shut, working his jaw as the tension eased up.

“Are you ready to be fucked, little boy?” Kitten walked around in front of him, showing him her strap-on cock.

I take in every inch of him, noticing first his muscular arms and wide shoulders. I see part of a tattoo peeking out from the arm of his t-shirt. The tiny hint makes me want to see it all. I’ve always been partial to inked bodies, loving how a story can be told in ink rather than words.

His dark, brown beard is ridiculously neat, trimmed to perfection. It surrounds pouty, kissable lips. I can’t help but wonder if he has chest hair. I’ve always been attracted to very masculine men. I realize how much of a freak I am, staring at this stranger, itching to see the rest of his tattoos and wondering what he’d look like naked, how my fingers would feel caressing his skin.

Soothing brown eyes look back at me, almost pleading with me to change my views of the world. His hair is longer on top than on the sides, tousled and messy as if he’s been running his hands through it for hours. Sexy, this man is incredibly sexy. He has an edge of danger to him, but at the same time, he seems completely approachable. He’s a wash of contradictions.

“I’m sorry about your fiancé,” he says reaching his hand out to take mine.

I pull away immediately, unable to hide the quiver in my lip at the mention of Alec.

“Don’t,” I say unsure of what the word is in reference to. Don’t touch me. Don’t mention the death of my best friend. Don’t walk out of here and leave me alone.

A few minutes of peace are all I’ve gotten since Alec’s death. A handful of times over the last couple of weeks my mind would shut down, and I forget, briefly, just how much I’ve lost. I got that reprieve looking at Kid until he ruined it by opening his mouth.

Why do people always feel the need to speak? Why verbalize the pain others are feeling? Sometimes just sitting, being available if needed is the best thing you can do.

“He’s my best friend,” I say on a choked sob. I have no idea why I’m telling him this. I don’t know why I feel the need to ease the hurt I saw in his eyes when I pulled my hand away from his touch. “Was. I lost my best friend.”

“Yeah,” he says, his voice full of sorrow. “I know what that feels like.”

I pull my eyes from looking at my own hands and look back at him. For the first time, I notice dog tags hanging around his neck. Small pieces of metal, unassuming for the most part, but I know they tell a story. Every soldier who wears them has one. It seems in a time of war, those stories get harder to tell.

Kid is young. I know he’s older than me. Even with an unmarred face and bright young eyes, he’s got an air about him that lets you know he’s seen more than most. He’s suffered more than most.

I immediately feel some sort of kindred-ship with him. I begin to shut the little part of myself down that he somehow forced me to open. He’s so young; there’s a good chance he’s still a soldier, and there’s no guarantee that any of them are safe. It’s best to just keep every one of them at a distance.

“You’re in the Army?” I finally manage to ask, angling my head at the tags around his neck.

I watch as he reaches his hand up and touches them as if he’s worn them so long he’s forgotten that they’re even there.

“I was in the Marines,” he answers quickly. “I’ve been out for a couple years now.”

“How old are you?” Was a soldier? No longer in the service? He doesn’t look old enough.

“Twenty-four.”

Six years older than me. I shake my head, knowing he sees nothing but a child sitting here in this bed. Not that I expect anything different, but I’m tired of being viewed as a child.

Here’s a taste of Luke & Callie…

I stand and move to him. His back muscles tense when I place my hand on his shoulder. “I want to get to know everything about you, Luke Hardy,” I say and he spins around to face me.

His eyes search mine. “You already know the important bits.”

“No, I don’t.” I rest my hand against his chest. “I don’t know the secrets you keep locked in here. They’re the important bits.”

His intake of breath is sharp and he wraps his hand around mine. His other hand slides around my waist and he pulls me close.

Oh, shit.

But his lips brush across mine before I can move out of his embrace. His hold is tight and his message is very clear—he’s in charge here and if a kiss is what he wants, a kiss is what he will have.

I’m pretty sure my eyes almost pop out of my head. I knew Luke was bossy—oh, boy did I know—but this is a whole new level of bossy. His deep voice vibrates along my skin, scattering goose bumps, while his eyes penetrate my soul. Those intense, green eyes of his will do it to me every time. They’ll cause me to forget everything I’ve ever said or thought and just cling to him for the ride.

He dips his face again and his mouth finds mine. The moment our lips connect sparks of desire burn through me. I’m so damn hot for him and I can’t control myself. I push my body hard against his and open my mouth to him.

After seeing how Luke would act about Callie’s dates, I just knew he wasn’t being overbearing and was actually jealous. I mentally high fived me when I was right!

Luke is just wow. The things he says and the growly voice – even though I can’t hear it – I can imagine it and LOVE it! Although after reading his history, I just want to give the guy the biggest bear hug!

Callie is a trip. I could see how she just thinks that Luke likes to bicker and pick on her rather than him liking her. But once she sees it, there’s no stopping Luke & Callie.

I love their love. They genuinely care about each other but have no problem letting the other know when they need to back off. Definitely more book boyfriend material!

I can’t wait to see whose story is next!!

Why I wrote this book:

The concept for what would eventually become WEDNESDAY was one of those random ideas that popped into my head in February 2016. It was a Saturday morning—you know the kind where you’re still lounging in your pajamas, drinking coffee, and picking at breakfast several hours after waking? Yes, one of those. My kids were playing on the living room floor, my husband flipping through a magazine across from me. It was winter in Minnesota, which meant it was absolutely freezing out and we had no plans to go anywhere.

I grabbed my laptop and wrote out the blurb for a book I knew I had no time to write. I e-mailed it to my publicist and said, “What do you think about this idea?” Her response was enthusiastic, something along the lines of, “You need to write this book! Right now!” So I opened a blank document, and soon I had the beginning of a first chapter.

Because this project didn’t fit into my writing schedule (like, at all), I decided that I would continue writing the books I was supposed to in order to keep on track with my releases, but that I would write one thousand words a night on this book too, and just see where it took me. It was a hard couple of months, alternating between two projects—one I would write during the day in present tense, and this book in the evening after dinner, dishes, and bath time, in past tense. This book was basically written with the help of wine, my couch, and a good playlist, which I included for you at the end.

Chloe and Shaw didn’t even have names for the first several weeks. I didn’t outline or plot. I had no idea where the story was heading . . . I just had a haunted what if question in my head.
