Too bad the snowpocalpyse of the century has different plans for him and Abby Winters. Before the night’s over, they find themselves snowed in at the most luxurious hotel in the city.Abby’s scouting job of a NYC penthouse should be quick, simple, and definitely shouldn’t include a sexy-as-hell man messing up the 3000 count sheets that will be featured in her company’s next blockbuster hit. Not when she’s up for a promotion that could skyrocket her entire career in the film industry. Still, she can’t refuse what the weather gods so obviously want her to have. She’ll give in, just this once.

Leaving is tougher than either of them could have imagined. But they’re two people who have nothing in common, living on opposite coasts. There’s no way they can ever be together. Right?

EXCERPT

“You going to do something about that?” He nodded down to his very prevalent erection as it pressed into her stomach.

“Maybe. You stopped me before I could get going, though.” Who the hell was she, that she was completely down with sucking a guy’s cock and giving him a handy in one day? This obviously must be an illness. Sex sickness.

That was a real thing, right? It had to be, or else she’d gotten a little haphazard on washing her hands while traveling and was now infected with a brain-eating bacteria that turned her into a sex fiend. That was…less likely. Whatever it was, she couldn’t bring herself to care, because all she wanted was Gage’s hands on her, and for him to fix the need that ached between her thighs.

“And what did I say before?”

She thought for a moment, her brain still fuzzed over with must have Gage. Need now. “That you’re in charge?”

“Exactly. Let me take care of you,” he whispered in her ear.

Release Day Blitz & Review ~ Why Lie? ~ by ~ Carey Heywood

Title: Why Lie? (Love Riddles #2)
Author: Carey Heywood
Release Date: Sept 12, 2016
Add on Goodreads
Why Lie?
People here think they know me.

They assume things about me because of the way I dress and my tattoos.

I am so much more.

I thought you saw that.
So, I let you in.

You made it easy to fall for you.

Turns out I was the only one falling.

I hope you’re happy.

No, that’s a lie and you’re better than I am at telling those.

Popping up on my elbow, I watch as he moves to the bathroom to take care of the condom. My eyes linger on his muscular back and oh so grabbable ass.
He was amazing.
Ah-mazing.
Sure, we tumbled into bed pretty fast but it didn’t end up being the wham bam thank you ma’am I was scared it would be. Nope, this was something. It was new but it was something more than just sex.
He was into me and I’m so into him it isn’t even funny. Scary thing is, he’s such a nice guy even my parents would approve, and they hate any guy I normally like.
Nope, he’s different and for every night this week, he’s been all mine. Flopping back onto my pillows, I sigh just remembering how all mine he’s been.
I was working a closing shift at Lola’s, the diner my family ran. It had been a complete shit night with two waitresses calling out. I was up to my elbows in work covering for the both of them. Then he surprised the hell out of me by offering to help. We weren’t strangers; in a town as small as Ferncliff that’s impossible. Still, we were friendly, but we weren’t friends. We ran with different crowds.
He was like the apple pie he always seemed to order, where I was a cupcake covered in sprinkles.
After trying and failing to get someone else to come in, I had taken him up on his offer. I can’t remember the last time I had that much fun working. The entire night felt like foreplay. At the time I thought it was all in my head. I can be a flirt and I didn’t think I was his type. It was when he stayed to help clean and close up that it became clear he was flirting back.
After everyone else was gone, I asked if he’d like to come up to my place for a drink. He said yes. We never did have a drink. Nope, we were kissing before I even had the door opened.
He has been in my bed every night since.
At the sound of his footsteps, I lift my head. The front view is just as good, if not better than the back. He laughs at my blatant appraisal.
“Keep looking at me like that and you won’t be going to sleep anytime soon,” he murmurs, lying down next to me and pulling me into his arms.
“Maybe I’m not as tired as I thought,” I reply.
It’s a lie though. As much as I would want to play on the jungle gym that is his insanely hot body, there’s only so much sex instead of sleep my body can handle. All I want to do is pass out. Since he’s as comfy as he is hot, it’s likely that will happen in the next couple of seconds.
“What are you doing tomorrow night?” he asks, nuzzling the sensitive spot behind my ear.
“I have to close,” I reply.
“I’m meeting up with some friends. It sucks you’re working.”
Hiding my smile at the fact he admitted he wanted to introduce me to his friends, I kiss the underside of his jaw. “You can come here after.”
Since Ferncliff is a small town, I already know who his friends are. They all seem cool; I’m just not close with any of them.
His arms tighten around me. “I’ll probably be out late and you need to catch up on sleep.”
I lift my head and squint down at him. “Why do you have to be so logical?”
He grins up at me, pushing forward to press his lips to mine.
“Stop being cute and go back to sleep.”
“I’m not that tired,” I yawn.
He grins. Putting his hand to the back of my head, he pulls me back down. I don’t fight it. I settle in and, with a happy smile, I crash.
What seems like an instant later, he gets out of bed to turn off his alarm. “Go back to sleep.” He issues his command and seals it with a kiss to my forehead.
“Bossy,” I grumble, before drifting off again.
When I open my eyes again, he’s already showered and dressed. After our third sleepover in a row, he brought an overnight bag. His dark blond hair is still wet. It’s not fair how sexy he looks freshly showered and in one of his suits.
“Come back to bed,” I plead.
He grabs his shoes and comes to sit on the bed next to me. “I wish.”
Curving my body around him, I rest my cheek to his thigh. He pushes my hair back from my face, his fingertips caressing my earlobe. My eyes flutter closed at his gentle touch. He seriously has it all.
It sucks to say but before him, I was under the impression that I have had amazing sex in my life. One night with him proved me wrong and each night since has only reinforced that.
“Are you sure you don’t want to come over tonight?” I ask.
“It’s not about want. You have to work and I can’t bail on my friends. Trust me, I’ll want to be here instead.”
I smile up at him. “Okay.”
He kisses me, this time long and hard before he goes. Happily, I doze until my stomach demands I get up to feed it.
My day flies by in the way that time does and I head downstairs. One amazing perk about living in the apartment above Lola’s was no commute. I walk to the convenience store and buy a Heath bar. I always loved them and now they’ve turned into a private joke with myself. I am such a dork.
Admitting that to myself won’t stop me from eating this candy bar once my shift is over, lusting after the guy who shares its name. Once I’m back upstairs in my apartment I pull it out of the bag and set it on my table. Snapping a pic of my candy bar, I text it to him, adding that I’d rather have the real thing.
My phone vibrates in my hand before I have a chance to set it down. Grinning, I answer it.
“Hey.”
“Hey back.”
“Did you like my pic?” I ask.
He chuckles before replying, “I can think of a few other things I wouldn’t mind a pic of.”
Naughty man!
“No flirting since I don’t get to see you tonight,” I return.
“It’s only one night.”
Yes, it’s one night but I’ll miss seeing him.
“At least I have a chocolatey stand in,” I tease, trying not to let on how bummed I am.
“I’ll give you that, but no apple pie without me.”
“Ever?” I giggle.
He’s serious when he replies, “Yep.”
Silly as it sounds, planning future apple pie dates gives me a thrill. This thing that we have going is moving at light speed. That doesn’t mean it’s wrong. Gigi told me she took one look at Pop and knew she was going to marry him one day. It wasn’t love at first sight for me, but love at first night.
“Deal,” I whisper.
We say our good-byes since I need to finish getting ready for work. Deciding to save it for one of my breaks, I slip my candy bar into the pocket of my apron and hurry downstairs to start my shift.
As usual, we have a busy dinner rush. During each lull, I find my mind wandering to him. Each time I can’t help but smile to myself already looking forward to the next time we’ll see each other.
Work keeps me from daydreaming about him for too long and by the end of the night, I’m grateful for the chance to catch up on sleep. After I indulge in my chocolaty Heath goodness, I get ready for bed. My small apartment never felt this lonely before.
It hasn’t been that long but I already miss him. His scent, a faint hint of the cologne I’ve come to adore, clings to my sheets. I bury my face into them, inhaling deeply, wishing he was here with me. Hugging my pillow, my last thought before sinking fully to sleep is how much nicer it is to fall asleep in his arms.
It’s my alarm that wakes me the next morning. In my infinite wisdom, I scheduled myself a morning shift after a closing one. With Gigi slowly passing the reins of Lola’s diner over to me, she’s been having me make the schedule.
So far I’m still getting the hang of it. It seems the only person’s schedule I keep screwing up is my own. That’s what I get for trying to accommodate everyone’s requests by squeezing myself to cover all the holes. Wiping sleep from my eyes, the prospect of a giant cup of coffee once I get downstairs has me moving.
There’s already a line of folks waiting when one of our morning waitresses opens the door. It’s not like our hours have changed in the past few decades. Wiping down the counter, I greet folks as they come in. We don’t have hostesses; Lola’s is seat yourself. Most of the morning crowd opts for the stools along the counter.
I’m pouring Hank Furlong a mug of coffee when I hear something that doesn’t compute. Setting down the coffee pot next to the mug, I move down the counter in a daze.
“What did you just say?” I ask.
Aaron Daniels blinks up at me. “About Heath Mackey and Kacey Albright getting engaged?”
Oh God, I had heard him right. My stomach falls, crashing down like a bird shot out of the sky.
“They got engaged?” I ask in a robotic tone.
I’m there but not there. Half of me waits for Aaron to reply while the other half spirits away to comb through still fresh memories of him holding me, kissing me, and making my body his.
Gossip moves through this town like wildfire. There is no way I missed them dating. The last I heard, Kacey still held a torch for Jake Whitmore. It didn’t even matter that he pretty much lived on an oilrig off the coast. No, Heath was single. Unless part of the reason he had been so discreet with me was to keep Kacey from finding out.
It was nothing short of a miracle that no one clued into his spending every night this week at my place. I had assumed it was because we were new. That’s why I hadn’t spilled the beans to anyone. How could I be so wrong about him?
He nods. “I was sitting at the table next to them. Bought them a round to congratulate them even though they were both well on their ways to celebrating.”
My entire frame is so tense I wouldn’t be surprised if one wrong move would send me splintering off into a thousand pieces. “Is that right?” I manage.
He nods happily, having no idea of my internal turmoil. “About time that Albright girl stopped mooning over Jake Whitmore. That boy is in the wind. Jake’s not ever going to settle down. Heath’s a nice young man and she’s a sweet little thing. I’m happy for them.”
Mentally, I stand them up, side by side, Heath and Kacey. Aaron’s words echo inside my head, “Nice young man, sweet little thing, nice young man, sweet little thing.”
It’s obvious the stark difference between Kacey and me. She’s not the type of girl to fall into bed with. She’s the kind of girl you marry. Not once this past week did shame for sleeping with Heath even enter my mind, until now.
Heath isn’t the first mistake I’ve made in the romance department. That doesn’t mean this blow doesn’t hurt. Before him, somehow, someway, part of me always had an inkling or a whisper of proceeding cautiously. Not with Heath, though. Nope. I was ready to hand him my heart that first night.
For the first time ever I was a hundred percent myself with someone. I was happy and excited, basking in how right we were together. We fit in a way that seemed special.
What happened? I don’t understand. He woke up in my bed yesterday morning.
“Thanks,” I numbly nod and walk away.
Each step sends a painful jolt up my body. Each step reminds me of what I had foolishly ignored our first night together. He was out of my league. It seems a better option was available to him, so he took it.
The chatter at the diner only increases, Heath and Kacey’s name coming at me over and over again like attacking bees. The sting proves to be more than I can handle.
It’s not every day you find out the man you’ve been falling in love with just got engaged to someone else.
TBRreview
I haven’t read Why Now? – the first book in the series – but I didn’t need to.  I do want to now just so I know the whole story.
In reading the synopsis and excerpt, you just know this is going to be a heart-wrencher.  And it was to a degree but it was so much more!  Sydney put all her heart and trust into Heath, who ends up engaged to someone else!  And what’s worse is that Sydney finds out at the local diner where she works and not from Heath himself.
Now before you hate on Heath too much (I won’t lie, I was going for the pitchfork), he has a backstory that no one knows about.  And his reasons for getting engaged to his friend Kacey will soon become clear.
After I got over hating Heath, he made me swoon!  He realized he royally screwed up and was determined to get Sydney back in his life for good!
I can’t wait to see whose story is next!
5 stars!

Exclusive Excerpt:

Dexter Blake liked a woman with some junk in her trunk. And the tall, curvy chick on the sidelines was packing a whole lot of booty. She had one of those itty-bitty waists, too. And her cups floweth’d over.

Staring at her chest was practically a religious experience.

Unfortunately, she only had eyes for Chuck Nugent, the pretty boy sports reporter for Channel Five. He was currently doing his sycophantish spiel on the field, a cameraman following him around as he interviewed the players still milling around for their obligatory post-match interviews.

She was impatient for his attention, too, if her pacing was anything to go by.

Lucky bastard.

As far as Dex was concerned, she could keep pacing. Watching everything jiggle was the cherry on the top of his pie tonight. There was nothing better than winning a hard-fought game of rugby union. But watching a fine-looking woman strutting her stuff came a very close second.

“I’d say don’t look now, booty at six o’clock, but I can see you’re ahead of me.”

Dex smiled at Tanner Stone, the captain of the Sydney Smoke and his good mate, as he pulled up beside him then dropped at the waist to stretch out his hamstrings.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Hey, Dex,” Bodie Webb said as he pulled up on the other side. “Your kinda ass on the sideline.”

A low whistle came from behind them. “I hope you’re planning on hitting that, Dex,” Lincoln Quinn murmured as he also appeared, casually waving at some teenage girls hollering at him from the dispersing crowd.

Dex chuckled. “Since when did you all turn into pimps?”

Linc clapped him on the back. “Just lending a hand.”

“Thanks. I can get my own ass.”

And, sadly, as much as sideline-chick ticked every box, her ass was off-limits. One look at her told him she was the kind of girl a guy loved. Got into a relationship with. The kind he married. Made babies with.

She was the commitment type.

Over a decade of avoiding romantic entanglements had alerted Dex to the signs, and this woman had I don’t do casual written all over her.

And he didn’t do commitment. His career came first. He’d fought hard for his place on the team, and at thirty, he probably only had a few good years left. He couldn’t afford to take his eyes off the ball for a second. He knew how easy it was to lose everything. To have it all go to shit when you least expected it.

He was never going back to Perry Hill.

There would be time for commitment later. Rugby was it for now.

“But you don’t,” Tanner said.

“Just because I don’t walk around with a permanent hard-on like Linc—”

“Hey!”

Everyone ignored Linc’s half-hearted protest. The cocky back rower wore his horniness like a badge of frickin’ honour. “—doesn’t mean I go without.”

And if he did—it was none of their damn business.

Chuck finished his interview with the skipper of the losing team and, spotting Tanner, headed toward them.

“Christ,” Dex said. “Dickhead approaching.”

Tanner sighed. “Best to just think of our contracts and smile for the camera.”

“Ooh, helllllo,” Bodie purred. “She’s on the move, too.”

Dex’s gaze flicked to the woman again, tracking her progress as she hurried after Chuck. Her hips swung enticingly and her chest moved interestingly beneath her T-shirt.

Christ, it was a turn-on.

“Chuck,” she called, hurrying to catch up with him.

Idiot. Dex would never let a woman trail behind him like that. Not when she could walk in front and he could check out her luscious ass.

“What in hell does she see in that guy?” Bodie asked.

Dex had no idea, but the urge to throttle the smarmy reporter—something that was never far from the surface—spewed like the sudden rush of a geyser in his chest.

“Chuck,” she called, louder this time, almost caught up with him.

Dickhead stopped. Turned. Then glared before looking around him as if he was embarrassed. He hissed, “What the fuck, Harper?” He’d kept his voice low, but the edge of fury carried it farther than Dex was sure Chuck would have liked.

“I told you to stay in the stands, not embarrass me by running onto the goddamn field in a pair of jeans you’ve barely managed to squeeze your lard ass into. I have a certain image to maintain, and it does not involve being followed around by fat chicks.”

Dex’s jaw clamped tight as the hackles rose on the back of his neck. Fat chick? He could see the stain of red creeping up her neck from here, and the spewing geyser in his chest turned viscous, like lava.

“God, he’s a fuckwit,” Bodie whispered.

“Excuse me,” Dex growled.

Lava burning in his chest, he strode purposefully toward Chuck and the woman, who was hissing something back at the reporter Dex couldn’t quite hear. He was sweaty and dirty and every damn muscle bitched at him, but Dex paid none of it any heed.

The urge to deck the smarmy front man rode him hard, but by the time he pulled up beside Chuck, Dex had another plan.

A better plan.

One that involved less potential penalty. And more potential booty.

“Hey, Chuck,” he said, forcing himself to smile as he clapped the reporter hard on the back. It was satisfying to hear a strained, involuntary cough from the man.

“Oh Dex, hi,” Chuck said, sleazy smile in place, turning as if he were trying to block the woman from Dex’s view.

No chance with those puny coat hanger shoulders.

“Great game tonight,” Chuck enthused. “If you could just give me thirty seconds, I’ll be right over.”

“Actually, Chuck,” Dex glanced at the woman and smiled at her. She was even more magnificent up close, with a whole lot of pissed-off glittering in the depths of her Marsala brown eyes. “I was hoping you might introduce me to the lady.”

It was amusing to watch the pretty boy almost choke on his tongue. For a moment, Dex thought he was going to say lady, what lady? But he finally turned to acknowledge the woman behind him. “Of course. This is Harper…Nugent. My…”

The woman—Harper—folded her arms across her chest, and all the blood rushed from Dex’s big head to his little one. “Come on, Chuck, you can say it,” she said, her voice dry with amused sarcasm. “It starts with S. Ssssister.”

Something eased in Dex’s chest. So she was not getting naked with Pretty Boy. There was a God.

“Step!” Chuck said quickly, his voice sharp.

She rolled her eyes as she smiled at Dex and offered her hand. He absently noted there were streaks of paint on her fingers. “Nice to meet you.”

Dex was a tall guy. Big. Not as big as some of the team’s front row, but he was still six foot and had trouble buying shirts that weren’t tight in the shoulders. This tall—hell, Amazonian—woman could look him straight in the eye. He’d never met a woman who could do that in a pair of flats, and it was a strange kind of turn-on.

“The pleasure’s entirely mine,” he murmured, returning her firm and sure grip with one of his own.

He liked a woman who could handshake like a boss.

“Yes…anyway,” Chuck said, his expression pained, as Harper’s hand fell away. “Harper has to run. A girlfriend crisis or something.”

Dex’s eyebrow kicked up. A girlfriend crisis? A crushing sense of disappointment slugged him in the chest.

She was a lesbian?

She laughed and shook her head. “Not that kind of girlfriend.”

His gaze was drawn to her mouth, a plush, sexy crescent in the midst of her flawless olive complexion. He didn’t think she was wearing any makeup, but she was sporting some kind of clear lip gloss that emphasized the luscious curve of her lips.

They glistened, wet and tempting.

Dex laughed, too, as relief flowed like champagne bubbles through his veins. “I am so pleased to hear that.”

Chuck cleared his throat. “Yes. Well. I have to interview the team.” He looked pointedly at his sister.

“Fine. Just don’t forget to pick up Jace and Tabby after you’re done. They’re fine in the stands with Jenny while you wrap up, but she can’t take them home and I’ve told your mother that you’re bringing her kids now instead of me.”

“I’m not going to bloody forget them, Harper,” Chuck replied testily.

She shot an apologetic smile at Dex then turned to go. He and Chuck watched her. The outline of her sexy, rounded butt in the denim of her jeans actually made Dex a little light-headed. It was a sight to behold.

“God, she has a fat ass,” Chuck muttered, disgust colouring his voice.

Dex’s hands tightened to fists. What a monumental wanker. He opened his mouth before he engaged his brain. “Harper! Wait up.”

She looked over her shoulder, a puzzled expression drawing a crease between her brows. “Dex,” Chuck said, putting a hand on Dex’s arm as he took a step in Harper’s direction.

“Tanner’s waiting,” Dex said, shaking off the hand before jogging the short distance to where she’d stopped.

“Hey,” she said, tossing the long strands of her rich dark hair behind her shoulder, clearly still puzzled.

He smiled. “I was hoping you might like to go out with me one night.”

She blinked, the crease between her eyebrows almost cavernous now. “Oh.”

Dex chuckled. It wasn’t the standard response he got from women. Normally, they were tripping over themselves to be asked out by him. Hell, most of them didn’t wait to be asked. It was well known that he didn’t generally date, so they were more than happy to do the asking.

A man with a less healthy ego might have been insulted by Harper’s tepid response. But he could sense her reticence was real as she glanced at the guys to her left, all gawking and smirking, clearly talking about them. Her gaze travelled over his shoulder to where Chuck stood—glaring, if the prickle between Dex’s shoulder blades was anything to go by.

Her gaze returned to him. “Um…”

Hmm. Maybe this wasn’t going to be as easy as he’d thought. He looked pointedly at the mobile she held. “Give me your phone.”

She glanced at it for a moment, frowning some more. “Why?”

Dex gave an exaggerated sigh and plucked it out of her unresisting hand. “It’s okay,” he assured her as she murmured a protest, and his fingers busily navigating to her address book. “I’m just going to put my number in because obviously I don’t have my phone available to put yours into mine.”

She crossed her arms as she watched him enter the details, and it took him twice as long.

“There,” he said, passing the phone back to her.

She glanced at the entry, and his heart tap-danced in his chest as a smile pulled at the curve of her mouth. She quirked an eyebrow at him. “Dex the Stud?”

He grinned and shrugged. “What can I say?”

“And what do you expect me to do with this?”

“As soon as you’re done with your girlfriend thing, give it a ring and we can set up a time and a place for our date.”

“Well, that’s a step up from the last guy, who put his number into my phone hoping I’d send him nude photos,” she said, her tone flippant.

Dex blinked. What the actual fuck? “Absolutely no class.”

“Well, to be fair, he did request arty ones.”

He laughed. “Hey.” He held his hands up in faux surrender. “Never let it be said that I stand in the way of artistic expression, if you feel so inclined with my number. But definitely lose his.”

She laughed back, and it grabbed him by the balls. Like everything else about her, it was big and rich and real. But then her gaze flicked over his shoulder again, and her smile slowly slipped from her face.

Dex gave an exaggerated sigh. “You’re not going to ring it, are you?”

She shook her head, a glossy smile playing on her glossy mouth. “No chance in hell.”

“Why?”

She glanced at her stepbrother again. “Some things just aren’t worth the hassle.”

Dex couldn’t agree more. But he didn’t think Harper Nugent was one of them. Undeterred, he grabbed for her phone again, his reflexes lightning fast after a decade of professional rugby. “You leave me no choice,” he chided as he quickly rang his own number.

“Hi, Dex the Stud,” he said as the ring tone eventually gave way to his message bank. “It’s Dex.” He waggled his brows at Harper, and she smiled and rolled her eyes. “I’m ringing to remind you to call Harper Nugent on this number and ask her on a date again. Do not take no for an answer. Even”—he grinned at her—“if she offers nude arty photos in lieu.”

Dex hit the end button and passed the phone back to her. “There now. You’re in my phone. And I will be ringing you.”

She glanced at the phone then at him before flicking a look at the guys again. Linc was grinning like a loon as he shot Dex two thumbs-up.

“Sure you will,” she said, the tight, polite smile on her face making Dex want to slap Linc upside the head.

She bade him farewell and walked away, and for the first time in his life, Dex looked forward to something other than rugby and inflicting bodily harm on Linc.

Harper’s phone rang three hours later. She was a bottle of wine down with her best friend Em, who was in the middle of a boyfriend-number-sixteen crisis. Em was cute, peppy, and up for anything.

She just had really lousy taste in men.

When Em went into a relationship, she went all in, something which Harper had always admired even if her friend consistently chose the wrong guys to be “in” with. The type who were only out for a good time, not a long time. But she always sprang back, and Harper was in awe of her friend’s tenacity and absolute conviction that the right person was out there for everyone.

Although not tonight. While Harper was drinking wine, Em’s breakup booze of choice was butterscotch schnapps, and tonight it was leading her to seriously consider becoming a nun. To prove her seriousness, she was currently Googling how to re-virginise.

So, Harper was both tipsy and completely distracted when she answered the phone.

“Hi,” she said as Em made gagging noises at pictures on a website she was skimming.

“Hey, Harper.”

The hairs on the back of her neck stood up in instant awareness as they had earlier tonight when Dexter Blake had singled her out for a bit of attention.

Her mind went blank for a beat or two. He rang?

Of course he had. She had clearly been some kind of bet or dare or something with his team buddies. At twenty-three, it wouldn’t be the first time she’d been the butt of some douche’s idea of a good time. I dare you to ask the fat chick out. Snigger, snort, backslap.

Some men were such assholes.

But it had been so good, even momentarily, to put her sanctimonious step-brother in his place.

“Harper? It’s Dex the Stud. Remember me?”

His voice was warm and rich with amusement, and Harper shut her eyes. Remember him? She’d relived him asking her out about a dozen times, no matter how much she’d told herself it had all been some sick joke. It had been the first thing she’d told Em after her friend had stopped crying and asked for something happy to cheer her up.

Then they’d Googled him.

“Harper?”

His voice was sharper this time and Harper pulled herself together, sitting straighter in the chair. “Yes. Of course… Hi.”

“You sound kinda…outta it.”

Harper eyed the empty wine bottle and the full one she’d just cracked open. “Well…I’m kinda drunk, so that’s probably why.”

His low chuckle slid seductive fingers down her neck. “The girlfriend emergency?”

“Yup.”

Em looked over her shoulder. “Who is it?”

“Dex.”

Her eyebrows practically hit her hairline. “The rugby dude?”

“Is that the girlfriend?” Dex asked in her ear.

“Yup,” she said to them both.

“Ask him if he knows how to re-virginise.”

Harper shook her head. “I’m not asking him that.”

“Asking me what?” His voice sounded delicious when it was amused. Thick and gooey, oozing all over her body. Like chocolate topping.

God, she loved chocolate topping.

“You should totally ask me whatever it is.”

“Trust me, you don’t want to know.”

“Are you kidding?” Em interrupted. “He’s a professional rugby star. Everyone knows they get laid all the time. What he doesn’t know about a woman’s anatomy probably isn’t worth knowing. He’ll know about re-virginising.”

Harper thought it more likely he’d know about de-virginising.

“Did she just say re-virginising?”

Had Harper been sober, she would have paid more heed to Em’s sage words about the mating habits of professional sportsmen and not the sweet seduction of a chocolate-topping voice. She sighed. “Yup.”

“Why would anyone want to re-virginise? Hell… Can someone re-virginise?”

“I don’t know and yes, apparently, according to the internet. Spiritually and surgically.”

“That sounds…painful.”

Harper laughed. “Yes. For both.”

“And seriously, would you want some strange dude with a scalpel down near your lady parts?”

She shuddered. “I can think of better uses for a dude down near my lady parts.” His bark of laughter was loud in her ear, and she realised what she said. Her face flamed. “Oh God, sorry. I said that out loud, didn’t I?”

“You certainly did, Harper Nugent.”

“I take it back.”

“Oh no,” he chuckled some more. “You can’t take that back.”

Harper groaned internally. Jesus. Where was her filter? She glanced at the wine bottle. Somewhere at the bottom of that, no doubt.

“Fine. Ignore it then. It’s the booze. White wine makes me mouthy.”

“I can’t wait to see that.”

His voice had dropped an octave and roughened with the merest hint of a promise. It went straight to those aforementioned lady parts, and Harper actually squirmed in her chair to ease the sudden ache.

“She’s not serious, is she?”

It took her a moment to realise he’d moved on, and she leaped at the opportunity gratefully. “No. She’s pissed. Both at men and in the alcoholic sense.” Em had already been several shots of Schnapps down when Harper arrived. “Re-virginising is just one of many options we’ve already discussed tonight. I think she wants to make a voodoo doll next.”

He laughed again. “I like the sound of her.”

Harper sighed, looking at the gorgeous mop of caramel curls and the alabaster wedge of cheekbone making up Em’s profile. She looked like one of those babies from old-fashioned adverts for Pears soap. Only all grown-up.

“She’s gorgeous. You should ask her out. You’d make beautiful babies.”

There was a long pause. Long enough to make Harper think, somewhere in her alcohol-addled brain, babies were not on Dexter Blake’s agenda.

“Thanks,” he said, voice low and amused. “I think I’ll stick with my original plan, though.”

“Oh?”

“You and me. A date.”

“Oh.” Harper’s stomach tightened. She’d seen the way his teammates had been watching them tonight. The way the younger guy had given the thumbs up. She could have kissed Dex for his timing, but a girl had her pride, right? Plus she never wanted to be one of those people who were gossiped about for punching above her weight.

“Look. I’m very flattered that you want to go out on a date with me, but—”

“You should do it,” Em interrupted.

Harper blinked at her best friend. “What?”

“I told you I liked the sound of her,” Dex said in her ear.

Em shrugged. “It’d be worth it just to piss off Chuckers.” If it was possible, Em disliked Chuck more than Harper did.

Harper considered that angle for moment, her head still spinning a little. It was a powerful argument. Why not? If Dex was using her to win some kind of ridiculous frat boy dare, why shouldn’t she use him, too?

“Okay, fine.” Clearly there was a level of drunk where pride rapidly diminished. “But I’m not sleeping with you. Or letting you anywhere near my lady parts.”

That low chuckle again. It ruffled seductively along flesh and nerve endings, and Harper fought the urge to stretch. And purr.

“You know you said that out loud, too, right?”

The lazy smile in his voice ruffled things even lower. “Yes. I know.”

“I will be on my best behaviour. I promise I won’t even bring condoms.”

Sober Harper nodded, pleased with the concession. Drunk, uninhibited Harper knew full well he could ruin her without the aid of a condom, and she seemed perfectly fine with that, too.

Uninhibited Harper was dangerous. She was going to have to cut that bitch off at the knees.

About CLAIMING THE ENEMY

Piper Dawson has spent a lifetime living by other people’s rules.

She’s worked hard to get what she wants—a residency at her first choice hospital—and no one will ever tie her down again, not even her severe yet incredibly sexy supervisor, Dr. Alexander “Ace” Lennox.

Ace is done with love. He’s had his heart shattered, and he never wants to go there again. But when he’s inexplicably enticed by the sexy, tattooed woman with blue streaks in her hair and a perpetual smile on her lips, he figures that maybe he can keep it to just sex.

The problem? He thrives on control, and Piper dances just around the edges of it.

But when they’re together, control is the first thing to go…

Each book in the Pulse series is a standalone, full-length story that can be enjoyed out of order.

Series Order:
Book #1 Engaging the Bachelor

Get a Sneak Peek at CLAIMING THE ENEMY:

“Are you just teasing me? Going to poke fun at me tomorrow for being all over you?”

Ace just stared at her for a moment—she was pretty sure she’d shocked him, but she had no idea why. Finally, a dark laugh escaped his throat, and those granite eyes locked with her own.

“I find this situation anything but amusing.” He closed the distance until there was nothing more than a slender ribbon of space between them. “I don’t get tempted…ever. And yet, ever since you kissed me today, all I can think about is what you’d look like with your legs wrapped around my neck.”

He did not just say that.

“Jesus, Ace.” Piper’s mouth went dry, and she ran the tip of her tongue over her lower lip. His eyes tracked the movement intently, and she felt a surge of moisture between her legs. “How the hell are we supposed to work together tomorrow?”

“No idea.” Sucking in a deep breath, he pressed his forehead to hers. “All I know is that I want you.”

Against every shred of good sense that she possessed, Piper felt her knees weaken. That wasn’t fair. Saying things like that while he stood there looking all smoldering and delicious—how was she supposed to put up a fair fight?

Danger, danger.

“I…” Closing her eyes, Piper stretched out a hand for the last shreds of self-control in her arsenal. “It’s a bad idea. A really, really bad idea.”

I can’t give in. I won’t.

“It’s a horrible idea,” Ace agreed, and when she opened her eyes the feral glint in his eyes had her pulse stuttering. “But right now, when I can see your pulse beating at the skin of your throat? When I can see the flush on your skin and know that it’s because of me? I don’t care.”

“Ace.” Piper’s voice was weak. “If we do this, it will be really hard to go back to what we usually are.”

“And what are we, usually?” Ace’s voice held no trace of the humor she’d expect during this absolutely bizarre conversation. No, he was completely serious.

Serious about seducing her.

“Pains in each other’s asses.”

TBRreview

As the blurb said, if you like Grey’s Anatomy, you’ll like this book. It’s part Grey’s and part soap opera with some of the events that happen. Maybe even add a dash of Scrubs for comedy.

The story opens with Piper talking to a giant fishbowl of alcohol. How can you not love that? She’s my kinda girl. And Ace with his stodgy self is Piper’s complete opposite and that’s what makes them work. Ace is more collected as where Piper admits to missing a verbal filter.

A great, quick, steamy medical read!

5 stars!

About Lauren Hawkeye

Lauren Hawkeye/ Lauren Jameson never imagined that she’d wind up telling stories for a living… though when she looks back, it’s easy to see that she’s the only one who is surprised. Always “the kid who read all the time”, Lauren made up stories about her favorite characters once she’d finished a book… and once spent an entire year narrating her own life internally. No, really. But where she was just plain odd before publication, now she can at least claim to have an artistic temperament.

Lauren lives in the Rocky Mountains of Alberta, Canada with her husband, toddler, pit bull and idiot cat, though they do not live in an igloo, nor do they drive a dogsled. In her nonexistent spare time Lauren can be found knitting (her husband claims that her snobby yarn collection is exorbitant), reading anything she can get her hands on, or sweating her way through spin class. She loves to hear from her readers!

From New York Times Bestseller Pepper Winters writing as Tess Hunter, comes a sarcastic, sexy standalone full of men with big ‘you know whats’, puppies, pigmy pigs, and swoon-worthy moments.

I don’t want to touch it.
I really, really don’t.
He’s egotistical, crass, and my patient’s owner–which makes him totally off limits.
Yep, that’s right. He owns the wiener I’m currently working on.
A wiener dog–get your dirty mind out of the gutter.
I’ve also worked on his Spoodle, his Cocker-shitzu, and a Cheagle–don’t ask. (And no, it’s not a sexual position).
It doesn’t help that he also represents most of my joint-owned veterinary practice’s small clientele. We’d only just opened the doors a few months ago, and in he strode with a yelping Taco Terrier. One haughty look at our sparkling new facilities, he’d demanded royal treatment, even though I was currently finger deep up a squalling tom cat.
Ever since then, he expects me to serve him.
Any time. All the time.
Him and his revolving zoo of dogs.
One of these days, I’m going to swat him for being such a pompous ass but I can’t deny the way he handles his charges makes me want to see past the ‘do as I say and don’t ask questions’ barking exterior.
But then last week…he caught me staring at his um, cough, package.
His bossy commands switched to a cocky smirk.
He gave me permission to do something I promised myself I would never ever do.
I can touch it.
If I want…

“Earth to vet Fairfax.” Ryder waved his hand in front of my face.
I jumped, hugging the dog tighter. “What? What happened?”
He bit his lip, doing his best not to smile. “You space-cadeted on me again.” He chuckled. “You were looking at my mouth. You weren’t thinking of doing bad things to me again, were you? Because if you were…I can totally help with that.”
Yes, please.
It would be so easy to nod and let whatever magic between us ignite. But we were at my work. I was supposed to be a mature, composed female.
Be that female!
My cheeks heated as I dropped my gaze to the Chinese Crested in my arms. “I wasn’t thinking bad things. Not in a bajillion years.”
“Bajillion, huh?” He raised an eyebrow. “Never heard of that amount of time.” He came closer, bringing sex and sparks and seduction. “Can I perhaps trade your bajillion and put my own time stamp on it?”
I froze as his hand cupped my cheek.
My face leaned into him.
Damn face.
Damn hand.
Damn chemistry.
“I suppose…” I breathed as his chest strained beneath his grey t-shirt. He was the one seducing me, yet he was just as affected. “What did you have in mind?”
His eyes lingered on my lips. “Do something for me and I’ll kiss you right here, right now.”
My mental capacity crashed.
“Do what?”
His eyes burned hot into mine. “It’s a huge, huge favour.”
The way he said huge made me think he’d swapped the word favour for cock.
I burned up as his thumb grazed my cheekbone.
He murmured, “If you did it, I’d do whatever you want.”
What, you’d chase me? Pretend to be a policeman and handcuff me? Reach inside my head and be prepared to play with me?
My tummy clenched. “What are you proposing I do?” I held the squirming dog as she tried to wriggle into my scrubs, looking for warmth. Not that I could blame her—it was fairly chilly in here with the air conditioning.
“You’d do it?” His eyes turned luminous. “For me?”
“Yes.”
Way to go, Ves. Don’t sound desperate or anything.
He smiled. “You’re such a kind, sweet…” His head tilted, bringing his mouth close to mine. His scent of outdoors and timber shot up my nose as he brought me forward, our lips only inches apart. “…amazing woman. I’m so fucking hard for you right now, Vesper.”
Dangnamit, everything inside me tightened, melted, swapped ownership and put its hands in the air to flay like idiots over how much I liked this guy.
How much I wanted this guy.
“Tell me what you want me to do, Ryder.” I licked my lips, almost hyperventilating with how much I needed him to kiss me.
“Christ, I love it when you say my name.” His thumb ran over my bottom lip, pulling it down as he pressed the lightest kiss there. “Vesper, I wouldn’t just ask this of any other woman. I’m asking you because you’re so damn incredible.”
Ask me what?
You want me naked and on all fours?
Got it, give me three seconds.
You want me to dress up in a nurse’s uniform and look after you instead of the dogs you bring in?
Hell yes, get on my table and drop ‘em.
I swallowed again. “Spit it out. I need to know.”
My heart needed to know before it galloped from my chest and left me a corpse.
“Okay, here it goes. Can you, Vesper Fairfax…knit?”
Eh…
What?!
I blinked, wrenching my face from his hold. “What did you just say?”
He bit his lip, shaking with mirth. “I asked how skilful you are with two needles and some wool.”
“Why? Do you have some crazy fetish you’re trying to admit to?”
“I have fetishes, but needles aren’t included.” He couldn’t hold back his laughter anymore. “Man, you should see your face.”
You should see what you did to my knickers, you jerk.

Excerpt from THE DARKEST LINK:

Copyright © 2016 by Scarlett Cole

“What is this?” she asked, running her hand over the elongated hood.

“A 1958 Ford Thunderbird. It was a shell when I bought it. Was found in an unused barn with a bunch of other old classics.”

The wheels were black with white faces, and the soft top was a creamy white. Reflections from the chrome cast light onto the white walls.

“I love it,” she said, excited to sit inside.

“Hood up or down?” Kenny asked, slipping her cases into the trunk.

“Oh, most definitely down,” Lia said. Screw the victory rolls, she could always put her hair into a high ponytail and add the red ribbon she had in her purse if her scarf failed. She reached into her bag to find it and tied it around her head.

“I like this,” Kenny said, fingering the knot under her chin gently. The way his eyes crinkled at the corners made her feel all kinds of gooey inside. Perhaps it was a good thing they lived a long drive away from each other. His very presence made it difficult to remember why she was taking some time off from men. But a little harmless flirtation was adding to the adventure of a few days off work. There couldn’t be any harm in that.

Once inside the car, Kenny took her hotel details and plugged them into his phone. “There are few downsides to the classics, but lack of sat-nav has to be one,” he said, turning the radio on. “Ready?”

“I feel like Thelma and Louise about to drive over the edge of the cliff,” she said with a laugh.

“Close. That was a 1966 Ford Thunderbird, eight years younger than this baby. Does that make me J.D.?”

“That depends. Are you planning on driving me to a motel, having your wicked way with me on the dresser, then stealing my life savings?”

“I know a motel, don’t know if they have a dresser, but more than willing to do a drive-by to find out.”

Lia laughed. “I was joking.”

“I wasn’t. Say the word, Red.”

He revved the engine several times, the low growl sexy as all hell, and grinned as he roared out onto the street. Lia watched his hand as he shifted the stick. He caressed the gear stick. The more she stared, the more turned on she became until she had to cross her legs and look out of the window.

Damn him for getting her so hot and bothered. She spared a glance back toward him, just as he turned to face her. And he winked. Because he knew.

And that just turned her on even more.

TBRreview

Such an amazing story for Lia!! You definitely need to read the other books first or some events won’t make sense.
Reid is such a sweetheart! And he fits right in with the guys at Second Circle. Who I just love all those Second Circle people. They’re funny, quirky in their own way and the best family any of them could have.
5 stars!

Tomorrow comes awfully fast and the day flies by. Maybe it’s because I’m not exactly thrilled about watching people have sex all by myself. It makes me wonder what kind of things people ask to see when they have requests. All I can say is that I feel like a creeper.

Chris walks into my office and stops when he gets a good look at my face. “Whoa, why are you so red?”

Glancing at the clock, I sigh. “Because in a couple of hours, I have to watch three people have sex in the viewing room.” He knows that I’m doing my own investigative work, but I never told him exactly what I’m doing until now.

He bursts out laughing. “Are you serious? What if it’s not the guy you’re looking for?”

I shrug. “Then I guess I’ll be watching these people have sex.”

“This is classic. I was going to ask you to go to dinner with me, but you’ll be too busy.”

I roll my eyes. “Ha-ha. I’d much rather be getting some dinner. I think I’m just going to stay here until it’s time to go.”

He tries to hide his smile and fails. “Have fun with that. You’ll have to let me know how it went in the morning.” He chuckles the entire time he walks to his office and then out the front door. I’ll never be able to escape him now; he’ll make fun of me for the rest of our lives.

Once everyone leaves, I eat the rest of my turkey sandwich I had left over from lunch while I look over my notes on Chad Bates. Jennifer never texted to tell me if he was going to be at the club or not, so I guess I’ll just have to find out when I get there. I wonder if Hunter’s ever done something like that … had sex with two girls on stage in front of an audience. That’s one of the reasons why I can never get serious about him. How can I when he does that for a living?

My time is running out so I close up the office and head to the club. The parking lot is packed, but I slip on my necklace and get out of the car. I try to ignore the evil looks from everyone standing in line as I walk up to the door. Luckily, Jared is right inside, dressed in his tux and his dark hair perfectly coifed.

“Good evening,” he says, taking my purse. It’s going to be hard to pin anything on Chad without physical proof. Maybe I can try to sneak in a hidden camera next time. Jared nods for me to follow him and we go through the door that leads to the sex rooms. Placing his hand on the doorknob, he smiles at me. “You ready?”

I laugh. “I hope so.”

We walk inside and he points to the purple, velvet couch. It’s the same place my co-workers sat when Hunter and I were on stage. “All you have to do is sit here and watch the show. If for some reason you have to leave, just press that blue button,” he says, pointing to it on the wall. “That way, I’ll know to come in and get you.”

I nod. “Thanks. I think I got it.”

He starts toward the door. “Enjoy the show.”

This isn’t your average male stripper/Magic Mike book; it’s SO much better!!

Hunter is a stripper at Society X – the most exclusive strip club/fantasy den in town. He enjoys the benefits – an endless supply of women and money for his tuition. Until Kennedy.

Kennedy’s friends have decided she needs a party at Society X to celebrate her recent divorce. Kennedy has always been intrigued and curious about Society X, but wouldn’t partake because of her husband. Well she’s husband-less now and ready to party!

She catches eyes with Hunter but doesn’t do anything about it, until he comes up to her. Hunter is definitely interested in Kennedy and lets her know it. Hunter isn’t your typical stripper in that he has a goal for his life – stripping is a means to an end.

This book was great in that it wasn’t just about Kennedy and Hunter, there was more than just their romance. It was suspenseful and interesting and was hot!

5 stars!

I’m not a good person. In fact, I’m a real bitch. If the
opportunity arises, I will take your husband, give him the best sex he’s ever
had, and laugh behind your back once I’m done with him. I do not put on airs
and graces. I just take what I want whenever I want it.

I am the abused who has become the abuser. I live for power because all power
had been stripped from me for years. Now that I have it back, I feed off of it
like it’s my primary sustenance, and I don’t care who I hurt in the process.

Every woman hates me, but do you know what? I don’t give a shit.

You won’t like me. I’m not here to be liked. You want to know my story? I won’t
stop you from observing. Just know that once I’m done with you, no shower—no
matter how scalding—will ever get me out from under your skin.

Warning: If you’re looking for pink, fluffy clouds, rainbows, and HEA’s, then
this book is not for you. These pages contain flashback scenes of child abuse
in all forms (physical, sexual, and emotional) as well as BDSM and other taboo
themes.

Love does not live in this book. Only dark, twisted, and sick obsessions thrive
here.

You. Have. Been. Warned!
