He promised her the world,

Then, abandoned her at the altar.

Anne

I’m a realist, cynical about falling in love. Until I met Declan – the rich and powerful player. With his quiet determination, he dismantled my cynicism and made me believe.

Before I know it, I’m flashing a radiant smile, dressed, and eagerly awaiting him at the altar.

Only, I got the text – “I’m not coming” – shattering my world.

Regret is a waste of time; I stand by my original convictions.

Years later, he’s back demanding a second chance, how dare he?

Declan

I shook on the agreement without hesitation because I had zero plans to marry for love. Ever.

Years later, Anne crashed into my life. I find myself craving what I thought I didn’t need or want.

Unexpectedly, the agreement I made resurfaced, presenting me with a dilemma:

Marry as agreed or Lose Anne forever.

Deal accepted, regardless of hurting Anne.

When I find Anne again, she’s engaged, far as I’m concerned, she’s still mine.

I’ll cheat, steal, and fight before I let Anne marry another.

All is fair in love and war. And this is war…hope he’s ready to fight?

The Handshake agreement is a contemporary, age gap, second chance romance with a Possessive MMC.

“Why are you here?” I ask in the sharpest controlled possible tone; I could proclaim instead of answering he moves closer to me. Instinctively, I move out of his reach in my narrow hallway. We mustn’t touch and we both know that, or at least, I know that.

“I came for you,” he states like it should be obvious as he takes his coat off and throws it onto my coat hanger. Just as I scoff. He must be losing his mind.

“Put your coat back on. You are not welcome here, and you won’t be here long enough to sit,” I say to him as I raised my left hand to my forehead, sighing. My ring catches the light, his eyes darken as he zeroes in on my ring, his jaw stiffens to that predatorial look. I know that look. The last time he had a look like that, the guy that smacked my ass almost had his head cut off. He moved closer and my feet quickened behind my loveseat couch.

“You ran away for almost four years, and you ask me why I’m here?” His voice deepens, giving me a perplexed, furrowed brow like I should know my question sounds stupid. Only it isn’t. He’s the one saying stupid stuff. He moves towards me, and I move back as well.

“I didn’t run away. You rejected and dumped at the altar me.” I raised my voice at him, he didn’t flinch “Instead of wallowing in self-pity, I took the opportunity that was offered to me and went on with my life, like you did. Why do you care where in the world I am?” I state as we continue our non-musical chair dance around the couch. In this moment, I’m glad I arranged my furniture for ease of traffic. I know what happens once he touches me. I wouldn’t be able to resist him, so my best defense is to avoid the slightest contact and keep moving till he leaves.

“Didn’t we go over this?” I push off until I’m standing to my full height and hold up one finger. “Dinner sounds like a date.” I add a second finger. “Dates lead to relationships.”

“It’s dinner. It’s not like I’m asking for your hand in marriage. Unless that will help my chances. I’ll get on one knee right now.”

“Guess what I think about that?”

“What?”

With my other two fingers still in the air, I add a third. Then I curl my pointer and ring finger to my palm leaving only my middle finger.

A grin curls around his full lips. “That was good. But I don’t speak finger, so you have to give me a good reason why?”

“Because you’re… Trey.”

“That’s not a good reason.”

“You’re not my type.”

“Sexy. Confident. Well-endowed aren’t your type?”

I snort a laugh. “More like cocky and full of himself aren’t my type. Plus, you wear a suit.”

“What’s wrong with the suit?” He runs his hands down the lapels of his jacket.

“Nothing per se, but I just don’t do suits. They’re too…suity. It only adds to the cocky and arrogant thing you got going on.” I wave my hand over his body.

“Well, I can fix that.” Trey stands and removes his suit jacket and drapes it over the backrest of his stool. His fingers dig into the knot of his tie, loosening it. Next, he pops the button at his collar.

“What are you doing?” I ask.

“Taking off the suit.”

“You’re going to strip? Right here, in a full bar?”

“Yup.” He undoes a couple more buttons.

I want to tear my gaze away, but I can’t. Instead, I spit out whatever words I can muster. “Keep your clothes on. No one wants to see you naked.”

Nora smacks my arm, and I jerk my head to face her. From the corner of her mouth she says, “Speak for yourself. I kinda want to see what he’s packing underneath.”

I narrow my gaze at her. She shrugs and slinks away but keeps a close eye on Trey in case he does remove the rest of his clothes. She wouldn’t want to miss that. Hell, right now I don’t want to miss it either.

Trey clears his throat and I twist around to meet his gaze. “So, what’s it going to be? Am I getting naked right here or are we going on a date?

My head snapped up. Hope fisted my heart. “My parents? You spoke to them? What did they—”

“I thought The Freedom was pursuing Captain Fredrick and The Black Hollow,” Henrik interrupted. He took the book from my grasp and thrust it into Savina’s beckoning fingers.

“No. I haven’t spoken to them.” Savina addressed me before returning her gaze to Henrik. “And yes. They were following your father—or they are.” Savina gripped the sides of the ledger, her knuckles whitening. “We don’t know any more than that. Captain Fredrick’s ship and Medusa were seen in Sottom at the same time. We think there is a connection. We thought The Freedom was trailing them, but we lost contact. I don’t know where either ship or Medusa is now. That’s why I’m waiting for Conleth to return with news.”

My arms trembled. Where in the underworld had my parents gone?

Savina pointed to the wingback chairs next to a pair of end tables. “Sit.”

Henrik guided me across the room. His calluses scratched the threads of my blouse as he coaxed me down with gentle pressure on my shoulders. My knees wobbled, and I flopped into the seat.

“Is that why Captain Niles took interest?” Henrik asked. “He has stacks of Jacarian maps marked up with circles around mountain sides and x’s laid in front of cave entrances.” He arched an eyebrow. “What is he looking for?”

Savina looked down at the leather-bound book, then back up to Henrik. “Is that where these came from?” Her voice built like a thunderclap, lifting her half out of her seat. “Did you two board The Serpent’s Snare by yourselves and steal this?”

Before Henrik or I could confirm or deny, the king’s voice boomed behind us. “Savina, are you in there?”

The door swung open. I twisted, and the look of raw devastation marring Conleth’s face spurred me to my feet. His black hair stood on end as if he’d been pulling it. Creases of worry marred his lips. Behind him, my great-uncle Hermes scoured the room like a man who’d wandered away from a shipwreck, brown eyes red-rimmed. I’d never seen either man cry. Not much could break them, but I knew the sort of bereavement that painted the windows to their soul’s crimson would sever my heart as well.

“Oh, my gods. What happened?” Savina rounded the desk, stopping before her husband. “Tell me, Conleth. Who’s dead?”

The second she asked, I knew. Their missing ship, my uncles’ dried tears, the silence. I dropped to my knees, a sob wracking my chest.

“No, no, no.” Impossible. My father was a demi-god born from Apollo and Calliope with the power to heal and bring men to their knees with his song; my mother, Lou, the fierce captain of the first all-female-crewed pirate ship, The Freedom. Together, they’d navigated the seas with the greatest warriors and battled amidst the waves like gods. Poseidon’s kingdom was their domain. No enemy could thwart them there.

“Cal?” Henrik called out, but Conleth quickly moved in front of him, blocking his path to me.

Hermes ignored everyone else. With an ease only my great-uncle possessed, he walked over and knelt to cradle my head in his hands.

I fought his embrace as my chest threatened to collapse and crush my heart. I refused to believe they were gone.

“Let me go!” Henrik shouted at Conleth, but I didn’t dare look at him.

“I’m so sorry,” my uncle whispered.

“My parents are dead. Are you sure?”

Hermes’s nod tore a sob from Savina. He rubbed his thumbs under my eyes, catching the droplets on his skin. Uncontrollable tears gushed like a river that escaped its bed.

I swallowed the giant knot that had twisted in my throat. “I don’t believe you. It can’t be.” My father grew up with sirens. He swam with them. His peers called him the Emperor of the Sea for a reason. How could he possibly die on the water? And my mother. She embodied the tides, the very salt-water air she breathed. How could she just be gone?

“It’s true.” My uncle reached for me.

I shook my head. None of this made sense. “My brother?” Adelphi had been on The Freedom as well. My parents would never let someone steal his soul away to the underworld. Not if they could help it.

“Also gone.” Hermes dropped his arms.

A burning fury surged through me, scorching my grief down to hot embers. “Who killed my family?”

My uncle looked away for the first time, his almond-shaped eyes darting over my head. Without meeting my gaze, he breathed, “Captain Fredrick of The Black Hollow.”

“You’re staring.” He passes me a pouch. “Am I?” The peanuts are warm in my hand. The scent of caramelized sugar tickles my nose. “Now you’re flushing. If I didn’t know better I’d say you’re having naughty thoughts about the side of my digits.” I choke on a nut. My eyes water. “I think the reference is to shoe sizes.” I make a point to glance at his snickers. “Twelves, baby.” He wiggles a brow. This time I chomp on the nut before it goes anywhere near my throat. “I was thinking your hands belong to a mechanic not a person working in city hall.” “Give me half a chance and I can show you what these hands are good for.” “Travis…” I flush, not because I’m a prude, but because despite the lovely evening, Charity’s dad is at the edge of my thoughts. I blame Charity for mentioning him, for convincing him to visit Candy Cane. Most of all, I blame myself for falling for a man who didn’t know I existed beyond being his daughter’s best friend. “Get your head out of the gutter,” Travis says with a smile that I wished set my heart on fire. “I noticed you didn’t have any Christmas decorations up yet. Any later and the entire town will write to the big man himself.” He glances around him, then whispers. “Or worse, put a complaint in with the city.” I groan. He’s only half joking. Candy Cane had a Christmas committee of four grandmothers that took their positions as seriously as the mayor. There hasn’t been a change in membership since Carter was president and unless one died, their word is law when it comes to Christmas. “I’ve just been—” “Hey, no need to explain.” But I want to. Want to share my good news with someone other than Charity. “I recently received good news that will help my business.” “That’s amazing.” “And nerve racking but it’s an opportunity to grow.” “You’re not trying to let me down easily, are you?” He searched my face. I shook my head. “No.” This is my chance to have a fresh beginning all around. It is definitely time I put a stop to this madness I feel for Nathan and get a hold of my love life. I realize that I went about my dating life the wrong way. Pushing Travis away or engrossing myself in work isn’t the answer to forgetting Nathan Dawan. Dating is. Nights like tonight are. We are at the end of the path. The end of a beautiful evening. “Sorry it took so long to make tonight happen.” He paused, taking my hand. I stared at our hands. This was nice in a gentle, reassuring sort of way. My middle didn’t flutter from the mere thought of him and his name didn’t have my pulse racing. “You’re worth the wait Naomi Waters.” We’re caught in a loop of staring into each other’s eyes. I will myself to relax, drown in the blue sea staring back at me but all I see are Nathan’s dark intense eyes that mimic the howling winds of a category four hurricane. Travis leans in and my stomach flutters. The feeling is so unexpected that my eyes widen instead of closing in anticipation of our first kiss and I gasp. He tosses his peanuts aside to cup my cheek. My lips part to tell him to wait…that I’m not ready, but no words escape. Not a single one. The distance closes between us and I slam my eyes such, too afraid he’ll see my thoughts for another man in my eyes. The first kiss I’d shamelessly envisioned having with him. “You really shouldn’t litter,” came an icy tone. Shit. Shit. I’m even hearing his voice. Squeezing my eyes tighter, I pucker my lips like a tenth grader and concentrate on what is about to happen. “Naomi!” Nathan growls, the sound bouncing behind my eyelids. I try harder to block him out. He’s only in your imagination. I count to five and wait.

The bus stops, and I fly through its halfway-open doors as if the Devil himself is chasing me Oh, God. Oh, God. Oh, God! My soles squeak on the pavement, my face is a sweaty, flustered mess, and I feel like I’m about to faint by the time I reach the Hunter Corp. “Good morning!” I shout at the guards, who all smirk, but thankfully hold one of the lifts open for me. Grr, no time for breakfast either. I shake my head and, getting inside the elevator, press the button for my floor. I hate it when my days begin like this. Stupid, stupid bus was twenty minutes late! And now I can’t even get coffee before I start work. “Coffee!” I groan out loud, dropping my head back until it rests on the wall. Oh, what I wouldn’t give for a hazelnut latte right now. The lift dings and I run through the open doors and down the corridor like a maniac. I drop my handbag under the desk and throw my coat over my chair. I turn on the lights, the computer, and the printer and am just about to sit to replace my trainers with the sensible heels I wear in the office when I notice the silence. No beeping, no humming, no flashing lights, nothing. “What’s wrong, sweetie?” I coo, petting the dark monitor. I find our electronic equipment temperamental, and a little TLC usually goes a long way. I press the ‘on’ button again, and still nothing happens. OK. The main lights are on—even with the big windows surrounding us, the overhead lights are always on during the day. And the printer is also working. So the computer must be unplugged somehow. That, or the IT guy who was here on Friday screwed up and I’ll have to call him again. The socket is somewhere on the floor under the desk. “Well, no time like the present,” I mutter, getting on my hands and knees and crawling under the damn thing. Hmm, the plug is in, so maybe it’s the socket that’s off. I feel around until I find the switch … and then there’s that familiar sound of electronic equipment coming back to life. “OK, baby, you’re all better now.” I smile, crawling out backwards when a deep, baritone voice says from behind me— “Who are you? And what the fuck are you doing under the desk?” Startled, I let out a yelp and jerk upwards. The back of my head hits the very edge of the desk hard. “Aaah!” I hear my anguished scream and screw my eyes shut. Pain stabs through my brain, making me crouch even lower to cradle my head. “Mmm,” I moan, dazed. Little white dots appear behind my eyelids, and I swoon from side to side. God, it really is like seeing stars, isn’t it? “Shit! Are you OK?” Big hands close around my waist and I’m suddenly lifted into an upright position. Oh, bad idea. Bad idea. Dizzy and with a throbbing headache, I feel my knees wobble and I’m sure I’m going to pass out. I fall against the hard wall behind me. “I got you, sweetheart. I got you.” An arm slips under my knees and I’m lifted into the air. I take a chance opening my eyes, and through the dizziness see the most beautiful face I’ve ever seen on a man. The electric-blue eyes looking down at me are so intense, I feel they can see right into my soul. I shiver and look away, my eyes closing again, turning everything black.

“May the Fates smile upon me.” Rylander stared at the ceiling as if summoning the gods themselves. “She’s nervous about the consummation of the wedding.”

The words rolled off his tongue so fast it took me a moment to absorb their meaning. But as I did, laughter bubbled up and soon erupted out of my mouth. “I’m so sorry.” I held my stomach as I continued to chortle, rocking my torso with the vibration. “I don’t know what to say but…” I swallowed, trying to compose myself.

Rylander’s shoulders tightened, lifting toward his reddened ears.

I coughed to choke my amusement. “I am sorry for my mirth. It’s just I hadn’t really given the matter much thought.” Because there would be no marriage, but of course, I couldn’t explain that to King Rylander. I placed my hand on the king’s arm as I did to steady my men. “I had hoped the princess and I could find friendship first and see where that leads. If that’s agreeable to you.”

The king rubbed his hands over his face, letting out a long breath. “Gods, thank you.”

I squeezed his bicep before letting go. “Well, this has been an…”

“Rye.” Footsteps sounded. “Rye, where are you?” A familiar voice—heard only once but carved deep in the channels of my mind—yelled as the doors to the throne room swung open and hit the adjacent wall.

Fiery hair framing perfect heart-shaped face and a slim frame stormed into the room. Exertion painted her cheeks pink. “Did you know the duke is here, in the kingdom. He failed to…” Her blue eyes widened as they connected to mine. Her mouth dropped open.

I tilted my head. My throat felt thick, my words sticking there. This couldn’t be…

“Duke of Eloqua, may I introduce my sister, the Princess of Cava.” Rylander waved between us. “Princess, this is—”

“You wretched man!” The princess paced into the room, practically breaking into a jog. Her gaze traveled my face as my heart plunked into the pit of my stomach. “You…. How are you even…”

Rylander stood aghast, appraising us.

Out of all the fair maidens! The Fates were more humorous than I gave them credit for. I didn’t know whether to pummel the old gals or kiss them. But when Savina’s cheeks inflamed, I knew my curse would at least be enjoyable.

My lips pulled into a lopsided grin. I extended my hand. “The name’s Conleth. And yours?”

The princess’s hands curled into fists by her sides. “None of your damn concern.”

I push open the heavy glass door of our office building, the cold, San Francisco December air hitting my cheeks. I hurry inside, my heels clicking on the polished marble floors. As I make my way past the rows of cubicles, I catch a glimpse of myself in the dark computer screens – my curly hair bouncing around my shoulders, my brown eyes peering out from under thick lashes. I plop down at my desk, setting my coffee, purse and laptop bag down. I boot up my computer, the screen lighting up. Numbers, always numbers. Sometimes I dream in debits and credits. As I open up the latest expense reports, my mind drifts to the coming holidays. While my coworkers chat about their ski trips and what parties they’ll attend, I’ll be spending Christmas in the real cold with my sister and her family in Virginia. The thought of the frigid winter depresses me. I crave sunshine on my skin, sand between my toes. But my traitor parents left the city for a Caribbean cruise, so it’s whether a solo holiday in my apartment or family time on the East Coast. I’m interrupted from my daydream by the ringing of my phone. I smile when I see the name flash on the screen. “Hey Lisa!” I answer. My best friend’s bubbly voice comes through the receiver. “Ami! How’s my favorite girl?” We chat about life, work. As always, her law firm is keeping her busy. Then Lisa asks me about my holiday plans, and I sigh. “Pfff, my parents went on their cruise. So it’s Virginia with my sister or just me, takeout, and Netflix. I’ll live vicariously through your tropical vacation pictures.” Lisa gasps. “Oh my god! I can’t believe I didn’t think to invite you sooner. Come down to my parents’ beach house with us!” My eyes go wide. THE beach house? In Florida? That sounds like a dream. But imposing on their family holiday… “Are you sure that’s okay?” I ask hesitantly. Lisa scoffs. “Of course! You know Mom and Dad love you. And I could really use my bestie to help with all the holiday activities’ organization.” I chew on my bottom lip, considering. A warm beach vacation with Lisa and her awesome family does sound amazing. Way better than sitting alone in my apartment or going to freeze my butt at Marie’s. “Alright, I’m in!” I finally say. Lisa squeals in excitement. And as we discuss travel plans, I can’t keep the grin off my face. No snow for me this Christmas – I’m heading for sunshine and sand! Lisa fills me in on the details – I’ll fly into Tampa next week and drive down to the Keys to meet them. “And we can talk about you and my brother,” she teases. I feel my cheeks heat. Lisa laughs. I suck my teeth. “Girl, leave me alone.” Truth is, I’ve had the biggest crush on Kareem Mason forever. The first time Lisa invited me to her house back when we were in high school and became inseparable. But he’s always been older, cooler, waaayyy out of my league. And now, he’s a successful, rich and famous basketball player. I’m just me – no way he’d ever look at me as more than his little sister’s best friend. The thought of him makes my pulse quicken. I push that to the far corners my mind. “I’m just looking forward to sunshine and piña coladas,” I say breezily. “Uh huh, sure,” Lisa teases. “Well, I better get back to it. I have no intention of taking any work with me, and I hope you do the same. Get ready for the best holiday ever, bestie!” We say our goodbyes and I set the phone down, shaking my head with amusement. A week lounging on the beach sounds like heaven. I start mentally packing my bikinis and sunscreen, daydreaming about crystal blue waves.

Collection Excerpts:

Billionaire Factor: Copyright 2023 @Scarlett Avery

I’m really not sure what kind of conversation to make when a man pays for you to be at his beck and call.

“Let me go over how the evening is going to unfold,” he says, holding my gaze.

All right. No chitchat. Straight to business.

“I’m all ears.”

He cocks a brow.

Even his eyebrows are sexy.

How can that be?

I scan his gorgeous face, overwhelmed by the intensity of his eyes. Don’t get me started about the few sexy strands of gray hair that caress his temples.

Tall, brown-haired men with blue eyes usually leave me weak in the knees, and Bryce Van Der Linden is no exception.

Silver fox in the making.

I approve.

He clears his throat.

Crap. I’m ogling.

I sit straighter in my chair.

Hit me with your best shot. “I’m listening.”

“The event starts at seven-thirty. The car will pick us up at ten past, and we’ll arrive in good time since the venue where the Camus Cognac Cuvee foundation dinner will take place is located near this hotel.”

“I see.”

“You’ll stay by my side during the evening and act like my charming date.” Copy that. “I’ve secured your services from six-thirty to one in the morning, but I don’t expect we’ll stay until the end. The driver will drop us off here, I’ll pay you, and the driver will take you home.”

Wait. Aren’t I supposed to get paid first? I guess we’re going to a gala, and that’s not something Todd mentioned in his list of rules.

Shit.

Bryce continues talking. “There will be a lot of international businesspeople with deep pockets, and if you can help smooth the interactions by throwing in a few sentences in their native tongue, I’m sure it will help me close more deals in the coming weeks.”

“I should be able to manage easily.”

“Todd told me you have a translation degree, and you speak Spanish, French, and Italian.”

“Yes, and yes.”

“Since I can barely say hello in any of those languages, I’ll count on you to break the ice. Are we clear?”

I nod. “You want me to smile, be charming, and when the opportunity arises, flirt with potential clients in their native tongue.”

“Yes, but don’t flirt your way into another man’s bed when I’m footing the bill,” he warns.

I didn’t expect that answer.

My inexperience as an escort shines bright.

Embarrassment colors my cheeks.

His face softens. “From what Todd tells me, you’re smart and you pick up on things quickly.”

“I am and I do.” I smile despite my discomfort.

The waiter returns with our drinks and some tempting appetizers. A few sips of my gin and tonic gives me the courage to ask a question I’ve had on my mind since Todd told me that the uber-successful and very eligible Bryce Van Der Linden was the first client of many to get in touch with him to secure ‘Amanda’s’ services.

“Bryce, may I ask a question?”

“Of course.”

“What should I say if someone asks about our relationship? How should I refer to you?”

“Good question. There’s a strategic reason behind hiring a gorgeous and sexy woman who speaks multiple languages. People will spend more time admiring your beauty and being impressed by your language skills than figuring out our relationship, but if someone were to ask, simply tell them you’re my director of international business. It’s a quick and simple way to put an end to any further questions they might have about us.”

“Got it. My language skills were the determining factor in selecting me over the other women at the agency?” Did I just ask that? “I’m sorry, Bryce. That came out the wrong way. I’m not questioning your decision,” I say, fumbling over my words.

He leans in dangerously close, his cologne—which I’m sure cost an arm and a leg—tickles my nostrils.

Holding my brown eyes with his dreamy blue ones, he places a hand on top of mine, and says in a suggestive voice, “Your language skills are a bonus. I selected you because you’re beautiful and you have an incredibly curvaceous body.”

His silky words make my nipples stand to attention and send tingles cartwheeling to my pussy.

Good Lord.

Billionaire Hotshot: Copyright 2023 @Scarlett Avery

Concern shines bright in his eyes and the stunning aqua shade shifts into a stormy blue as his jaw sets.

Why am I spilling my guts to a man who is, for all intents and purposes, still a stranger?

He looks over my head, seemingly searching for something, but I’m not sure what.

“Come on, let’s get out of the way,” he drags me to the front of lobby, not even waiting for my response.

“What’s your name?” he asks.

“I thought we weren’t supposed to exchange real names?”

“That only applies at the club. We obeyed the rules, but when we’re in the real world, we abide by different rules, J.S.,” he says with a light chuckle.

My cheeks blush furiously.

“You got my note?”

“Of course I did. And for the record, you were wrong.”

I furrow my eyebrows. “In what sense?”

“We meet again.”

“We do,” I say with a small smile.

His expression changes, turning more serious.

“Can I be honest?” he asks.

I nod, because I’m still awestruck.

“I haven’t been able to stop thinking about you since we hooked up.” My pulse jumps at his admission. “I really wanted to know who you were. In fact, it was a burning need.”

Butterflies erupt inside me.

Oh.

My.

God.

“It’s the same for me. When I wasn’t consumed with all this drama––aka my life––you were on my mind.”

I spent the better part of Sunday at the office. Sydney came over on Sunday evening to keep me company and help me with my long list of stupid house chores. All the while, we exchanged naughty stories. Her alpha was undeniably an experienced lover, but he didn’t rock her world the way the man standing in front of me did mine.

“Are you going to keep me in suspense much longer, J.S.?” he presses.

“My name is Jules Salinger.”

“Pleased to meet you, Jules Salinger,” he flashes me a smile that makes me forget all my woes. “My name is Levi Aldridge.”

“It’s a pleasure to meet you, Levi.”

“So, you’re having a challenging day?”

“To say the least.”

“I recognize you don’t know much about me, but I’m a great listener.”

“It’s okay,” I shake my head. “I don’t want to trouble you. I’ll figure it out,” I lie. As it stands, only a crystal ball—or a million dollars—can help me figure out my next step.

“It’s no trouble, Jules,” he tells me.

I love hearing my name on his lips.

I consider him for a long beat.

“Listen, whatever you’re dealing with is weighing on you. Sometimes you just need to get it off your chest.”

I let out a heavy sigh. “Okay.”

“Good,” he smiles. “I just ended a meeting with my lawyers, and I was heading to the convenient store for a chocolate bar because I’m starved,” he tells me. “If we’re going to talk, we might as well do it in front of a hearty meal and great wine. I know it’s only half past five, but why don’t we have an early dinner? I know a phenomenal Italian restaurant not too far.”

“I—uh… Are you sure? I don’t want you to change your evening plans on my account.”

“I know exactly what I want and that’s spending the evening with you,” his voice drops a notch or two, sounding wholly seductive, although I’m unsure if that’s on purpose or not. Regardless, my pussy approves.

“Oh,” I say, nervously brushing a strand of hair behind my ear.

“Do you work in this building?” he asks.

“No.” I give him a quick rundown, but don’t mention Hillary. “I took a taxi here. I didn’t want to deal with parking, or worse, a ticket.” And my shitty car is unreliable.

“My Range Rover is parked in the garage. Let’s take my wheels and I’ll drive you back to your office after dinner.”

“Okay.” Truth be told, I don’t have it in me to argue. Not to mention, in this shit storm that is my life, Levi Aldridge is a beacon of light. I’d have to be stupid not to take him up on his offer.

Billionaire Mogul: Copyright 2023 @Scarlett Avery

A long stretch of silence passes between us.

“I wonder how much time we have left before the oxygen runs out in the elevator,” I say.

“What?!”

“I’m pulling your leg again.”

“You’re just mean.” There’s lightness in that statement.

“Not at all. I just wanted to get a reaction out of you since it seems it’s all I can get.”

She lets out a low laugh.

“Are we friends now?” I ask.

“Not even in your wildest dreams, loverboy.”

“Look at that, you stumbled onto something.”

“What are you talking about?” I’m sure she’s sporting a frown.

“I’m a lover, not a fighter.”

“Moving right along,” she says.

I chuckle.

Feeling like we’ve made progress, I take a chance.

“You smell lovely, by the way.”

The closed space traps the exquisite floral scent of her perfume.

“Thanks,” she says. “I’m lucky you didn’t eat garlic, yogurt, or sardines for breakfast. Halitosis is so unattractive.”

I chuckle again. “Is that your way of saying you like how I smell?”

“You’re putting words into my mouth, loverboy.”

“I’m going to savor this moment because you just went from hating my guts to calling me loverboy. Twice.”

“Don’t get the wrong idea, I still hate your guts, but that was smooth.”

“It’s my trademark, along with my dazzling white smile and baby blue eyes.”

“Oh, someone is so full of themselves.”

“Not at all,” I say. “I’m simply describing my best assets while keeping it PG. Feel free to do the same.”

That gets me a laugh. It’s contained, nonetheless, it’s a laugh.

“I’m sure your charm must go over well with the women you try to seduce—”

“Try? I’m insulted. The word isn’t even part of my vocabulary.”

“I guess women drop their panties for you every single time.”

“Wouldn’t you want to know, cupcake?”

I don’t know how far apart we are, but I take a small step closer to her.

Her clothes shuffle and then there’s a thumping sound. “Shit!” she says.

“I guess you can’t run very far.”

“Don’t you dare touch me,” she says. “I’ve taken self-defense classes.”

“I wouldn’t dream of touching you unless you begged for it.”

She gasps.

I grin wide.

“Only a woman who has no sense of her worth would beg a man to touch her,” she says.

“I can assure you, they beg for much more than that.”

She clears her throat.

A million questions bounce around in my head.

Is she a screamer in bed?

Would she dig her fingernails into my ass as I drive into her?

Does she prefer doggie style, or woman on top, or maybe reverse cowgirl.

What am I thinking about?

She’s not that wild.

I bet I could change that in an instant.

“Wow, Romeo. You have a hell of an ego.”

“Perhaps you’ve never had it good enough to beg for it,” I say.

“Women fake it all the time and men are none the wiser.” Feisty.

“There are certain telltale signs women can’t fake. A good lover knows that.”

“You’re so full of—”

The elevator jerks just as she’s about to rip me a new one.

The lights flicker back on and static screeches from the ceiling speakers before a voice blares. “This is the Los Angeles Fire Department. Hold on tight. Everything should be restored soon.”

I shield my eyes from the brightness.

Eager to know what she looks like, I lower my hand and turn my head.

I blink.
