β€œPulling the curtain to the side, I watched as he fired a tennis ball the length of the room. β€œI thought you played defense. That looked like a quarterback threw it.”

β€œHuh, played being the operative word. And no, that didn’t look like a quarterback threw it, but you always were kind.”

Sadie dropped the ball at his feet. β€œDo you miss it?”

He picked it up and threw it again. β€œPlaying? Yes. What playing did to my body? Hell, no.”

I watched after Sadie as I stood next to Hayes. β€œI bet she’d have made a great Frisbee dog, maybe even fly ball, when she was younger.”

β€œThey always say shit like that about us has-beens, don’t they, girl? Drop it.” He scratched her head, and Sadie spit out the ball. β€œIf only we were younger, if only our knees still had all their cartilage. If only time didn’t march on and forget about us.” He stared at the ball in his hands with a distance in his gaze. Sadie sat patiently, looking up at the man she so obviously loved with soft brown eyes and a face going white with age. These two needed each other.

Gently, I pulled the ball from Hayes’s hand and gave Sadie a scratch. Then I launched it across the room. She looked after it but didn’t go. β€œOh, Hayes. This little girl is sweet on you.”

That made the laugh lines appear around his eyes. β€œGo get it, sweetheart.”

Finally, she darted out after it.

β€œI’m sorry about football. I just want you to know that you are so much more than the game. I’ve always thought that.” Today couldn’t have been easy on him, at an event with players who used to be his teammates, but now he coached them.

Hayes nodded. β€œI mean, yeah. I’m a football player. I’ll always be a football player. But it’s the way it got taken away from me, and the reason I even played so long in the first place.” He shook his head. β€œI loved playing. I wanted to play solely because I loved it, and I wanted to leave on my terms. That didn’t happen. Sometimes I’m a little jealous of Brody for that.”

Sadie brought the ball back to me, but I noticed her starting to limp a little on her right hind leg. β€œAll done, sweetheart.” Breathing heavy, her black coat shined in the light as she circled and lay down next to Hayes’s leg. I studied his face. The lines etched into his forehead. The aching set of his jaw. This man was broken, but weren’t we all a little damaged?

I looked up at Sam’s face. Concern was all over it, but something else was in his eyes. It was then that I realized just how close he was standing to me. My breasts were grazing his chest with each breath I took. For a minute, we just stared at each other. Hesitantly, I brought my free hand up to rest over Sam’s heart. It was pounding deep within his ribs and each beat was like a drum I could feel vibrating everywhere.

Suddenly, his other hand was at my waist, fingers digging into my flesh enough to make me jump. Not out of fear. Right here, right now, I wasn’t scared. I needed him. I needed to feel him, to be felt by him. To forget everything else that was happening. I didn’t want to think about being alone or someone trying to hurt me. I wanted to live in this moment.

I released his hand and brought mine up to wrap around his neck. Our eyes didn’t move off of each other. He bent down slowly, grabbing onto my hip. His lips were so close to mine, I could feel his warm breath on my face as he opened them. What happened in a moment felt drawn out in slow motion. It was too slow for me. I lifted my head towards him, our lips only an inch away. And then, a riot.

His lips finally crashed down on mine and everything exploded. Our touch, our breath, the hot streaks of anticipation flashing through my body. I felt his hands grab me harder, hard enough to maybe leave a bruise and if I could have spared the brain cells to think about that, I would have found it sexy. But instead, I couldn’t think. Just feel. His lips were surprisingly soft, but the pressure was hard. He swooped his tongue into part my own lips and claim my mouth. My hands at the back of his neck now pulled at his hair, not to pull him away but to have something to hold onto in this frenzy.
