I love a good sports romance – Susan Elizabeth Phillips’ Chicago Stars series remains one of my favorites to this day. Anywho, in this first story of the Men of Blaze series, we meet Colson, who has just been traded to the Miami Blaze, the NBA team.

Within minutes of landing, he stops a mugging in progress of the beautiful Sydney. Sparks immediately fly between the two. Fast forward to Colson and Sydney finding out the other is employed by the same company, the Blaze and Sydney’s dad is Colson’s new coach.

You could feel the chemistry between the two of them leaping off the page (well kindle). The flirting, the teasing, the pain and joy. Sydney and Colson both are not what the other expected but they’re definitely drawn to each other.

I can’t wait to read more of this series!! I’m hooked already!

I’m not normally a dark, horror reader but this collection of stories intrigued me.

Mercie’s story is heartbreaking. Her parents are killed, she loses their house and then becomes a bank robber so that she can support herself. Mercie is filled with rage and I don’t think anyone could blame her. While her methods aren’t legal, you can understand what is driving her. She has nowhere to go and no one to help her- well almost. She has Kermit, who is a fantastic person to have at your back.

This is very relevant right now as so many people are losing family members, their homes and are just trying to make ends meet. So while the circumstances are different, the situations are the same. While Mercie isn’t a traditional hero, you’re rooting for her nonetheless.

Additionally, there are 4 short stories that are each a bit darker than you expect but are still great reads on their own.

“Cool,” Charlie says. “There’s a drainage issue with one of the women’s shower stalls. Once I get that fixed, I’ll get him started on sanding down the fencing around the center. It needs a refinish.”

“Chase is happy to glove up and help you with the shower drains,” she says sweetly. “Aren’t you?”

My jaw ticks. “Sure.” 

“Good.” She grins, as if she’s won this round. “I’ll leave you to it!” She turns on her heel and marches off before I can get in another word.
