“Plenty of people have told me not to cling to hopes, Clint. And I never listened to a damned one of them. You’re a fine man, but you’re no different. I’m not gonna listen to you tell me not to hope for the best things for my girl. And make no mistake, you are the best thing that ever happened to my Rae-of-sunshine.”

I closed my eyes as heat hit my chest. Those were really nice words, but I wished they’d come from Raegan.

After a deep breath, I opened my eyes. “Thank you, Penny. I just don’t want to see you get hurt.”

She shook her head. “Watching life pass my daughter by is what will hurt. Not holding onto the hope she comes to her damn senses.”

“Penny,” I whispered.

“Now. You still take cream with your coffee? Hate to tell you, but we don’t have that Cafe Bustello stuff you like. Your choices are a breakfast blend or this cockamamie caramel latte business Raegan picked up.”

“It’s a caramel macchiato, Mom and there’s nothing cockamamie about it,” Raegan said from the doorway.

In the middle of the night, I had missed her shapely legs in those insanely short shorts. Her nipples beaded under the bright blue t-shirt with three clouds across the chest. I ignored all of that, but the sight of her hair piled on top of her head in a messy bun made my dick twitch because I desperately wanted to yank it all down before I kissed her hard.

Dammit.

I had to stop those thoughts or the visions they brought on were going to kill me.

I faced Penny, who had a knowing smirk on her face, and said, “Breakfast blend is fine, and two creams plus one sugar works for me. Just point me in the direction of the sugar.”

“It’s right behind you. I’ll be right back,” Raegan mumbled before she hustled down the hallway.

I heard coffee being poured into mugs while I grabbed the sugar container. When I looked to Penny, she wore her lopsided smile. “I think it was something you said, Clint.”

EXCERPT: A crack of thunder made me jump.

Rafa peered at me with one eye closed. “You afraid of the storm?”

“No. Don’t be ridiculous.” I crossed my arms and sat down then pulled a blanket around me.

He studied me. “Did you ask me in not to be alone or because you want something else?”

Both. It was very much both. I brought my fist to my mouth while I contemplated sharing the truth. But there was no need.

A dangerous understanding twinkled in his eyes and a smug grin formed on his otherwise flawless face. He crawled over to me until we were nose to nose. I blinked several times. I take another bite of the brownie and then lay flat on the grass, letting the October sun kiss my brown skin while I enjoy the chocolatey goodness. “Ahh,” I say to myself, “after this, I can die happy.” I put both hands behind my head and squint at the sun beaming down on me. “I hope not,” I hear a deep voice say. I sit up and look at the figure, but the bright sun blocks his face. I block the sun by putting a hand on my forehead and look into a pair of familiar eyes, the clearest green I’ve ever seen. The sun dips behind a cloud, giving me a clear view of his face. It’s the ginger hottie with the bun. He’s either a transfer or a graduate student because, in all my years here, I’ve never seen him until recently. But whatever the circumstances, he’s certainly noticeable. And I never turn down an opportunity to ogle good eye candy. First, he’s head and shoulders taller than everyone on campus. He walks around, his shoulders broad, as if he owns the place. Unlike most of the people at this school, I’ve never seen him with an entourage. The few times I’ve seen him, he’s been alone. His bun is messier than usual today. Half of it has fallen out of the elastic and hangs on his very broad shoulders. The wind blows, making his hair messier, and my fingers itch to put it back in place. I’ve never been this close to him, and when I look into his face again, I notice a small scar above his left eyebrow. I envision running a finger over that scar fifty different ways. “Well, if you ever had this brownie, you’d die a happy death too,” I finally say. Normally, I’d be tongue-tied around someone as good looking as him, but knowing that he must be making small talk between classes and that someone like him would never be interested in me, I decide to just be myself. “Are you going to share, then?
