Exclusive Excerpt:

I roll the Indian into the garage lot, and park it. I let the engine growl for a bit before I shut it off. The only time I enjoy turning heads is when they hear this streamlined beast coming. This bike came back from the dead. Only true fans could understand.

Josh is already here, the garage door is up, and so is his hood. A greased-up Cajun by the name of Spanky is checking out the car’s guts. I think that’s his name, anyway.

Spanky is one of the few associates of mine whose interest lies almost solely in a legal trade. He knows where to get old parts for real cheap, and though sometimes I don’t know what the fuck he’s saying to me, he’s reliable. He owns the place, and for a fat sack, he lets me use his space when he can. He’s used to seeing the Caddy. The Challenger is a new treat.

I swing a leg over my bike, then replace my road goggles with my wire-framed glasses. The days are fading earlier the closer we get to fall, and the air has cooled from the mid-summer shroud of humidity and heat. The ride over was nice, wind against my face, carrying what last bits of aggravation lingered from the earlier part of the day.

Everything changes tomorrow, but tonight, I’ve agreed to do a tune up on Josh’s Challenger. He offered me money, but I won’t take it. I just want to get elbow deep in that machine.

I’ve dressed down in a pair of stained jeans, my old motorcycle boots, and a pristine white t-shirt. It’s something of a ritual, the process of getting a clean shirt dirty. I can hear Spanky jawing at the engine in an appreciative tone, and I smirk as I approach. Josh is watching Spanky’s backside with a look of confusion, which he turns on me, like I can somehow explain.

I say, “She’s a damsel, eh, Spanky?”

“Daaaaayum straight,” he answers, with a drawn out “Wooooooeeeeee” as punctuation.

He straightens and gives me a half-cocked grin. The grease on his cheeks makes what’s left of his teeth seem almost white. Somehow I think under that layer of muck, his skin is pale as a newborn, and he never sees the sun without a solid mask of grit.

He points at a large dirty cooler full of ice and clear beer bottles, and says, “Youawnt’un?”

I shake my head and hand over a rolled-up fast food bag, which contains a few flat, oozing burgers and his weed. His eyes light up when he sees it. As much as he’d love to stay and drool over Josh’s toy, he’d just as rather go get high and down some disgusting food. He nods to us, and disappears into the bowels of the garage.

“What the fuck?” Josh mutters under his breath as he snags a beer for himself.

He eyes the label, Miller High Life, and his expression turns down in distaste. It’s so haughty that I almost give him shit for being such a picky bitch. He pops the top anyway and takes a swig.

I’ve been riding for a while, so there’s already a layer of road dirt on my face. It was the best way to find the space to breathe after everything clicked just out of place at the Garden District house. That moment has been carefully boarded up and stored for later inspection.

There’s a strange ease in knowing the secrets are out, at least as far as our inner crew is concerned. The mandate has been passed, all applicable parties have been notified. Effective immediately. Except not really. Tonight I’m a free agent, floating too far from the ground to control my landing.

About Cadillac Payback:

An old Cadillac and a gun are all she has left of her brother. Three men stand ready to follow her into the darkest pits of hell to avenge him. The Cadillac leads them down a swamp road lined with ghosts, consequence and the tangled web of business and pleasure, into the underbelly of New Orleans crime as she fights for vengeance for her brother.

Joshua was just a rookie, a kid caught up in a drug ring. It’s fun and dangerous, all easy, until it kills his best friend and drags what’s left of his companions into a war. All he knows is he would walk into hell with her, and she might ask before it’s over…

Isaiah thought he’d seen everything—but watching Charlie die tore the world apart. The regime is changing, and with the new leader come more questions than answers. He was Charlie’s right hand, but what will he be to her?

Frederick came up on the streets, learned fast and hard and dirty. His past has always been a sticking point for the group, but one person has never questioned him, and he’ll do anything for her…

Maria never wanted to take over Charlie’s operation. But with her brother dead, and vengeance the only thing she has left, she makes her first decision: drag Charlie’s killers down.

It might just be her last.

New Release ~ More Than Enough ~ by ~ Kathryn Shay

Title: More Than Enough
Series: Sisters of Fire #1
Author: Kathryn Shay
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Release Date: April 13, 2021
Cover Design: Shelley Kay Webcrafters Design

Hardened firefighter, Trish “Mac” Mackenzie rappels off buildings, saves kids in a car accident and carries victims out of raging fires. But her personal life is a mess. Can Mac fight her way out of abuse and insecurity with the Sisters of Fire, a skilled counselor, and good-guy, kindergarten teacher Nathan Mitchell at her side?

Goodreads Review – “What a great start to the new Sisters of Fire Series.”

Goodreads Review – “I couldn’t stop reading this story, and was frequently moved to tears.”

Goodreads Review – “Once again Kathryn Shay has out done herself!!!”

Nathan smiled out at his kids, now sitting in a circle on a mat on the floor, waiting for him to read them a story. He loved this job. Thankfully, his previous experience had given him the chance to work here.

Dropping down on his own pillow, he said, “We have three books to choose from.” He tried to give the kids options even though they were kindergartners. “I think half of you already had a Pick Day. Only those who haven’t can raise your hand.” He propped up the three books. “Pig Will and Pig Won’t. The Giraffe Dance. Mogli in the Jungle.”

Several hands shot up

A shy little girl had her head down so he couldn’t see her face behind her long dark hair.

“Mary, what’s your pick?”

She glanced up. “Me?”

“Which book would you like?”

“Pig Will.” She spoked softly, like she always did.

“Pig Will it is.”

He read the book about the cooperative pig who helped harvest the food and cook it. Pig Won’t refused to do any work. When it came time to eat, Pig Won’t didn’t get any food. It was a bit preachy but had a valuable lesson and appealed to kids.

They sat attentively for most of the book, then they started to fidget. “Now, let’s talk about why Pig Won’t didn’t get any food.”

“‘Cuz he didn’t help.” Surprisingly, Mary spoke again.

“Do you all help at home?”

“My brother doesn’t…”

“I do…”

“I do…”

They volunteered until there was a knock at the door. “Ah, I’ll bet that’s Mr. Simpson coming to get you for Exercise Time.” He got up and opened the door.

“Hey, there. Are my kiddies ready for ET?” He liked Ed Simpson’s mild-mannered way.

“They are.” To the class, “All right, line up.”

After some juggling, the students left with Ed.

Nathan decided to get some coffee on his thirty-minute break and headed down the hall. Someone else was walking down the corridor. Holy cow, it was Trish, Marcy’s sister-in-law, again.

He jogged to meet her. “Hey, there.”

She was out of her uniform today, wearing white cropped pants and a blue blouse. Her hair was down around her face. Coming toward him, she seemed surprised. “Hi, Nathan.”

“Well, here we are again.”

She chuckled.

“We have to stop meeting like this, Trish.” His voice was stern, making her smile. “What are you doing here?”

“I’m meeting with your principal about the fire prevention program at the school for next year. I’m the CCFD liaison. I’m out of uniform because it’s my day off.”

“Terrific. I think the curriculum needs some updating.”

“I do too.” She watched him through huge blue/gray eyes. “I can’t believe that after the past two years of seeing you at Marcy’s house, I never asked what you did.”

“Teacher. Kindergarten.”

“Wow. Where do you get the patience?”

“I’m not sure some days.”

“Ha.”

“And don’t feel bad. We didn’t have many parties with both families.”

“I guess.”

“Let me walk to the principal’s office with you. It’s past my classroom and down another hallway.”

“Thanks.”

The door to the reception area of the principal’s office was open and the secretary peered up at them. “Oh, hello, Nathan.” She transferred her gaze to Trish.

“I’m Firefighter Mackenzie. I have a meeting here.”

“I’m afraid Jay is running late. He’s at the administration building. He’s not in control of his time when he goes there. He texted me to take you for coffee and he’d meet you in the Teacher’s Lounge.” She pushed back her chair to get up.

“I’m going down to get coffee,” Nathan put in easily.

“Oh, would you mind accompanying her?”

“If it’s okay with Firefighter Mackenzie.”

“I guess.” Was that shyness or aversion. He couldn’t tell.

“Let’s go then.”

It was a short distance to the lounge where he poured them coffees out of a pot on the counter and they both sat at a table. The room was empty.

“So, firefighting, huh? Are there very many females in the Crystal City Department?”

“Out of two hundred firefighters, 67 are women. We’re also working on more diversity, which is only 20 percent.”

“Wow! I never knew.”

“Do you like your job?”

Her expression seemed confused. “Yeah, of course. A lot.”

“What do you like most about it?”

“The work we do helping people.”

He lifted his cup. “To me you’re all heroes.” He clinked the mug with hers.

“Most of us don’t think of the job that way.”

“All the more admirable of you. How long have you been one of America’s Bravest?”

“Over ten years. How long have you been a teacher?”

“About the same. Only two years in Crystal City, though.”

“What do you like best about being a teacher?”

“The kids, of course.”

“I can see why. Kids are so much nicer than adults.”

He cocked his head. “Are they?”

She blushed, heightening the color in her cheeks. “You’ll have to excuse me. I work with burly men who forget their manners. A lot.”

“Any other women on your…what do you call it?”

“My group.”

“Working on your group?”

“Yeah, a paramedic. We spread the women out. We still need 33 more to make up half of the department, though.”

“You went to socialize with some of those women the night we met.”

A genuine smile now. “Yeah, they’re great. We all started in the same recruit class ten years ago.”

“That is so sweet.”

“How did you know where I went?”

“Rick told me.”

Her face went cloudy at the boyfriend’s name.

“Tell me about them.”

“The women? Why?”

He shrugged. “I’m totally unfamiliar with firefighters. Especially female ones.”

“Huh. Well, there’s six of us…”

He watched her as she talked. Her eyes lit now. Her wary face became animated. She gave him a detailed rundown on the women which he thoroughly enjoyed. She’d finished and he was about to comment, when the principal walked through the doors and approached their table. “I am so sorry, Firefighter Mackenzie. I’ve wasted almost half an hour of your time.”

“It wasn’t wasted,” she said tossing a glance at him. “I got to spend some time with Nathan.”

He delighted in the comment.

Jay asked, “Shall we stay here or go to my office?”

“You can stay here.” Nathan stood. “My class is coming back to the room in five minutes.” He got Jay coffee then reached over and squeezed Trish’s arm. She stared at his hand on her. “Nice to see you again, Trish.”

“You too, Nathan.”

He left. And whistled all the way down the hall.

I came back to Mason Creek when my life was turned upside down, both literally and figuratively. Scared and alone, I packed my belongings and left New York where I’ve made a career as a writer for a national publication to stay with my parents in the town so different than the big apple they might as well be on different planets.

Getting to see my friends was a big plus, but meeting someone new never crossed my mind until a ruggedly handsome man in jeans and a worn baseball cap came over to say hello. Not knowing someone in this small town is like not knowing how to breathe. The slightly older man caught my eye, just as much as I caught his. A witty and roguish personality kept me on my toes, even if falling for someone new is the last thing I need.

Neither of us wants a relationship, yet we keep finding each other in this small town. Rumors fly, hearts connect, and there’s more at stake than either of us are willing to share.

This man has secrets everyone wants to know, but when more than he’s willing to share is revealed I hope I’m strong enough to help him. I may have come back to town to save myself, but saving him might be the real reason I’m here.

Excerpt

She turned into Bear’s long drive, and Lee cursed a little under his breath. “We’re here, aren’t we?” “This is it. You’re looking at the Cluster.” There was plenty of parking for everyone, thankfully, but the people who lived closest to each other usually carpooled for meetings. That made it hard to tell who’d already arrived, but it looked like they were among the last. She couldn’t decide whether that was a good thing. She parked the car and turned to Lee, who was giving her a pointed glance. “Cloister? That isn’t helping dissuade me about the whole cult thing. The whole cabin in the woods thing doesn’t seem like a great sign either.” “Not cloister. Cluster, like cluster…fudge.” A smile played on his lips. “Let me guess, your father didn’t like it when you swore.” “Of course not,” she said, smiling back. “It wouldn’t be ladylike.” “And why, may I ask, do they call their own house a cluster—” he gave her a wicked look, “—fudge?” “I guess you’re about to find out.” They both unbuckled their seat belts, but he made no move for the door. Gazing at her, the gold flecks in his eyes like mica, he asked, “Blue, what part of last night convinced you to break things off with Dan?” She didn’t answer right away, her heart still choking her, and he smiled at her—a sexy, unreserved smile—the kind that made her wonder how many people he’d looked at this way. “Radical honesty, remember?” Her whole body hummed like a tuned instrument. It hadn’t been like this since the beginning with Remy. And if that wasn’t a thought to wake her up . . . Except it didn’t jar her enough. Because she found herself leaning toward Lee a little, as if caught up in a whirlwind of his making. As if those vines were cinching their very bodies together. “Because I wanted you to kiss me,” she admitted. She silently added, Because I felt more connected to you in one night than I did to him in two months… But Lee was reaching for her then, his hand weaving into her hair, pulling her to him, and those lips that had driven her to distraction the night before, the ones that had hovered over her neck, were suddenly on hers. They were warm and commanding, and Blue felt lost to the longing that unfurled within her, to the heat that ignited in her core. He’d probably meant it to be a soft kiss, exploratory, but his hand burrowed deeper into her hair, pulling her closer, and she found herself moaning as his tongue swept into her mouth. She wrapped her hands around his arms, mindlessly trying to bring him closer, needing to feel him against her like she had last night, like she’d dreamed of, and suddenly he was lifting her up onto his lap. They were facing each other this time, and she had a flash of what it would have been like if they’d talked like this last night—looking into each other’s eyes, bodies locked together—and the intimacy of it was more arousing than anything she’d ever experienced. She was the one who kissed him this time, reveling in the fact that he’d given her control by pulling her on top of him, until she caught a glimpse of the bench Cal had made, beneath the willow tree in the Cluster’s back yard, and oh God, what the hell was she doing?

#BeastInHisMadnessRD-7 “Dinah? The appearance of working is not actually working.”   I jumped in my seat, twisting my head up to see my professor looming over me. “Mr. Cogsworth! I-I am…”  “Spacing out,” he finished for me. “I know the look all too well. I see it many times a day.” I lowered my head, feeling a twang of guilt. “I’m sorry.” “Dinah, you are by far one of my best students. Your work ethic is impeccable. It’s okay to give yourself a break every once in a while.” A soft smile peeked out from his French Fork beard. “Sometimes a break from the madness is good. Your mind needs to let go.”  My gaze snapped to him, his phrase ringing something in my head. It felt so far away and distant, like a scream from inside a coffin.  “Did you forget what we discussed before?” He tucked his beefy hands into his waistcoat.  “Discussed?” “Don’t think in such a straight line. It is not merely one plane on which certainty lives. What you perceive may not be, but what you don’t see may be the only reality that is true.” “What’s that supposed to mean?” Struggling to breathe, his statement fell on my chest, feeling heavy. It sounded like nonsense, but I couldn’t brush away the sick feeling in my stomach. “Not everything is what it seems, my dear. As I said before, sometimes it’s worth risking everything for something you can’t see but can feel.” He bent closer. “Look closer, Dinah, and find the cracks in the seams. The puzzle pieces that don’t fit.” With a wink, he turned and ambled away, conversing with the next student.  What the hell?

Trent I fell in love with the wrong girl—you could say.  She destroyed my career. Set me up for her family’s crimes. Then ran off into the sunset to become Queen of a criminal empire.  Time is supposed to heal all things. For me, time has done nothing but create a vengeful monster out for blood. Her blood. I won’t stop until she’s back on my turf, playing my game and surrendering her body and soul to me.  I’d say my plan would be to destroy her heart like she did mine, except I learned long ago that Scarlet Reyes doesn’t have one.  There is no happily ever after here.  Scarlet I ruined my chance at happiness—you could say.  I became a Queen to survive. He doesn’t know I walked away to save his life. My plan to make my father’s enemy fall in love with me worked, until I lost my own heart in the process.  Until he showed me the cage I had allowed myself to be trapped in.  When a relationship is already built on lies like ours, hearts and love don’t stand a chance.  I have a secret I’m keeping from Trent Nichols. Now I’m back and once again my lies are standing in the way. How can we live happily ever after when he’s determined to ruin me?
