Iβm about to grab my purse when Alice walks into the office, walking straight toward me. βI told my son he shouldnβt keep you on when he purchased this place.β She points an accusing finger at me. βAnd after that stunt you pulled at Mr. Arnoldsonβs party, your proved me right.β
βAliceββ
βMrs. Duncan,β she corrects me.
βMrs. Duncan, I think there has been a misunderstanding. I donβt know what youβre talking about.β
βYou left the party,β she says, as if that explains anything.
βMom,β Xavier comes into the lobby, βwhat are you doing here?β
βIβm letting thisβ¦ woman know she failed to do her job. You have responsibilities and you neglected them. After everything my son has done for you.β
βXavierββ
βIt is Mr. Duncan to you,β Alice cuts in again.
βMom, please.β Xavier takes her arm and pulls her to his office. βLeAnna, stay there.β
Xavier takes his mom into his office, and I hear her heated voice tell him she wants me gone. I canβt hear what Xavier says to her, but after a few minutes, he leaves his office, shutting the door behind him, and comes to my desk. I donβt know whether to run or hide when his gaze lands on me with an intensity Iβve seen from him before.
Lorraine and Gerald are pretending to not watch us from their offices, and I feel a blush of embarrassment heat my cheeks.
