I watch him leave, and in the silence of the studio a desperate longing fills my heart. “Really, it’s fine. We’re…” Ruby looks across at me, a taut smile on her lips, the playfulness gone from her face. “We’re just good friends.” I manage a limp nod, but her words deliver a blow to my heart. My name on his lips sends an unexpected shiver down my spine, and I try to tell myself it’s from the chill of the evening air. The shadows cast by the fire make it impossible for me to read the expression on his face. I take a deep breath and summon up my courage to break the silence.

Faye Madden believes she is one of the lucky ones, because for her it was love at first sight.
