You can predict the tides but not the changes they make. Gunnison Del Valle was the current in the tide that was about to change my life.

Crash one we met.
Crash two we fell in love.
Crash three changed our perfectly planned lives forever.

As we approach, I realize it’s a private celebration of some sort, and I pray we won’t be noticed.  As the music gets louder and the flame rises higher, we ease our way into the crowd and take a seat on a piece of driftwood facing each other.

As sparks fly into the night sky, I notice Marleigh watching them.

“What are you thinking about?”  I ask.

“Have you ever thought about what happens to those embers?”

“They burn out?”  I say unsure of where this is going.

“Yeah, but I can’t help but feel like that roaring fire when I’m with you.  You probably think I’m crazy since it’s only been a week,” she says while covering her face with her hands as if she’s embarrassed.

Taking her face in my hands, I raise her eyes to mine.  “Mar, I don’t think you’re crazy.  In fact, I feel the same way.”

“You do?”

“Yes, but we aren’t like the embers. When this week ends, it will be a beginning for us.”

“How can you say that?  You’re going to be like twenty hours away or somethin’.”

“More like nine, but who’s counting.” As a smile crosses her face, I’m happily caught off guard when she crashes her lips into mine.  Our kiss heats up like the fire beside us and my heart soars like the sparks into the sky.

The devil sat on my shoulder from my first breath, he watched my every move, and with the first strike of lightnin’ I was pulled under.

Walking into Boondocks the voice of an angel called to me and I vowed to live a better life.  She kept me on the righteous path until Satan called one last time.

Walker

Watching her place her perfect lips on the side of Logan’s face made me cringe. I know I have no right to feel this way, but those two have something that I can’t quite understand, and I’m jealous. The question is, what do I do about it?  As she walks toward me with a huge smile on her face, all my craziness evaporates into the evening sky.

“You ready?” she asks.

“As I’ll ever be,” I reply.

After swinging my leg over my bike, I pass Chauna a helmet, and we put them on together. As she swings her leg over, I hold still and wait for the moment she wraps her arms around me. I take a deep breath as she eases into me and rev the engine to life; all eyes are on us.

“Hold on tight,” I say, and she pulls herself even closer. We take the driveway slow, but when we hit the main road, I pull the throttle and we pick up speed as we make our way toward Sammy’s. As we approach the drive-in, I realize that Chauna is completely right; this place is nothing like it was earlier today. The Sammy’s Drive-In light is lit up like Christmas, and it reminds me of Flo’s Café in the movie Cars. There’s so much neon, and instead of cars, there are monster trucks everywhere. Pulling the bike in, we park, and I look to Chauna for direction as country music plays in the background.

“Welcome to Barber. Where the trucks are hot, but the girls are hotter,” she says with pure sexiness. In this moment, I know that this is just the beginning of an epic, new chapter in my life.

TBRreview

This was such a sweet, Southern story!  Boondocks is a bar in a tiny town and that means everyone knows everyone and their business.  Chauna has been daddy’s little girl since she was born and just wants to be with him at Boondocks.

Walker just wants out of his life.  He can’t wait to turn 18 and get away from his parents and live his own life.  And meeting Chauna makes him want that even more.  He doesn’t want to do the things his father makes him do  because he wants to be good for Chauna.

Of course life happens and their budding romance suffers.

This was a great, small town, Southern NA read.  I can’t wait for more!

4 stars!

Excerpt Reveal ~ Boondocks ~ by ~ Casey Peeler

Excerpt

From the first beat of the song, I begin to sing every dang word to her, and she begins to laugh as I put on the bad boy front that everyone already believes. As verse two starts, I move in closer to her, and when he references the bad toy in the parking lot, I point to where my bike’s parked. She takes a step toward me, and I hope and pray that her dad is not looking because it’s about to get hot in here… quick. Chauna begins to sway her hips in rhythm with me and sing right along with me. As the final chorus plays, she looks over her shoulder and smiles as she turns to whisper into my ear.

“Walker, I wanna bad boy,” she says with a slight laugh. When the song ends, we wait for the next, and as I look toward the tables, I see Logan. It’s obvious he’s pissed, which isn’t what I need because I really wanted to be his friend.

As Jackson’s Wheel takes the stage again, we get a drink, and around eleven when the adults begin to show, we decide to head out to our spot. Once we get there, we don’t waste any time getting as close to each other as possible.

My hands find her skin, and she begins to laugh. “What’s so funny?” I ask.

“Nothing, bad boy,” she says.

“Oh, you want a bad boy, huh?” I say roughly.

“Damn right, I do.”
